Therefore, the story revolving around her on-screen chemistry with Sean (Steven) had to change.

The incomplete arc of Steven’s relationship with Shayla was brought by her exit right after Season 1. Fans were highly disappointed as it turned out very much ignored and incomplete too. 

Shayla’s absence in The Summer I Turned Pretty also calls for how Steven’s new possible relationship started. With whom? None other than Taylor. Not to forget to mention that while Shayla and Steven were together, the latter maintained a flirtatious bond with Taylor.
