Where to buy Pepper X

The Carolina Reaper has lost its spot as the world’s hottest pepper after the Guinness World Record crowned Pepper X with the title in 2023. Now many are wondering if the Pepper X, which stands at almost 2.7 million Scolville units, has its seeds available for sale.

Pepper X has broken the record of Carolina Reaper and gained the top spot as of October 16, 2023. The latter was first crowned as the world’s hottest pepper in 2017 when it beat out the Trinidad Scorpion “Butch T”. But the top spot in the Guinness World Record Hottest Pepper section belongs to Pepper X now. Here’s how it all went down.

Guinness World Record goes to Pepper X in 2023

Pepper X boasts an average of 2,693,000 Scoville Heat Units (SHU), as noted by Winthrop University in South Carolina, US. Its predecessor, the Carolina Reaper averages at 1.64 million Scoville.

Pepper X’s creator Ed Currie was given the Guinness World Record plaque on Sean Evans’ First We Feast. In his victory speech, Currie said: “This is the culmination of a lot of work by a lot of people. People said it couldn’t be done, they called us liars, and we proved to them that Pepper X is actually the hottest pepper in the world, officially from Guinness.”

Pepper X has quickly become famous on the internet since its Guinness World Record win. Many are also wondering where and how they can get their hands on the new sensation.

Are Pepper X’s seeds available for sale?

If you are among those looking for Pepper X seeds to have your own batch of hot pepper, you’d be disappointed to know that seeds for the Guinness hot pepper are not being sold officially.

A press release noted that pods and seeds of Pepper X won’t be sold separately as it is a proprietary pepper. Hence the only way you can get a taste of the pepper is through the Pepper X hot sauces.

You can find a range of Pepper X’s hot sauces on the Heatonist website. They come in various flavors like Buffalo Hot Sauce, Extra Mean Green, Chipotle Express, and more.

How was Pepper X made?

Pepper X creator Ed Currie started the process of creating it 10 years ago as a hobby. He would often cultivate hot peppers in his home as well as the homes of friends and family.

He soon made it a full-time job and raised 800 hot pepper plants. The Pepper X creator told First We Feast: “When we bred this pepper out, the first thing we looked for is something to raise that heat level to what we thought was going to be the maximum, and the second thing is flavor.”
