What happened to Roberta Flack?
Roberta Flack was diagnosed with Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS,) known as Lou Gehrig’s disease, as per several media outlets in November 2022.
The iconic musician’s manager Suzanne Koga said (via Variety) the diagnosis has made it “impossible” for Roberta to sing and limited her speaking ability.
Suzanne said that “it will take a lot more than ALS to silence this icon” and that Roberta plans to stay active in the music scene, the statement added at the time.
In 2016, Roberta suffered a stroke but she managed to make a recovery after that. In January 2022, she recovered from covid which she went contracted with mild symptoms.
Musician released book in January 2023
The Grammy winner may have retired from her music career for the time being, but she makes sure to be in her fans’ lives as much as possible.
In January 2023, Roberta released her first children’s book, titled The Green Piano: How Little Me Found Music.
The book features stories from her upbringing surrounded by music after her dad found a “beat-up upright piano” in a junkyard.
The autobiographical picture book gives an insight into the musician’s unique childhood and tells the story of how she developed her passion for music.
