What happened to Jamie Tartt’s dad in Ted Lasso season 3?
Jamie Tartt’s dad is missing from the match as Richmond take on Man City in Ted Lasso season 3 but why is this and what has happened to him?
*WARNING: Spoilers ahead for Ted Lasso season 3, episode 11*
The relationship between fathers and sons has been at the very heart of Ted Lasso ever since the show premiered on Apple TV+ and one of the most notable dynamics has been that of Jamie Tartt and his dad, James.
Their bond hasn’t been the closest at the best of times and heading into the eleventh episode of Ted Lasso season 3, Jamie grew increasingly nervous about potentially reuniting with his dad as Richmond prepared to face Manchester City – but James Tartt was nowhere to be seen at the Etihad Stadium, prompting questions about what happened to him.
Jamie Tartt nervous about reunion with his dad
Episode 11 of Ted Lasso season 3 focuses on Richmond’s latest match against Premier League giants and their ‘great white whale,’ Manchester City – led by cameo-making manager, Pep Guardiola.
As a result, the prospect of a reunion with his father, James, weighs heavily on the mind of Jamie Tartt as the last time they saw each other was at Wembley in season 2 when Jamie punched his father who had been mocking him and his Richmond teammates.
Jamie’s nerves about seeing his father again cause him to break down in tears when talking to Roy and to seek out his mother for advice when they arrive in Manchester.
As ever, though, it’s Ted’s words of wisdom that seem to inspire Jamie the most as Coach Lasso tells Jamie to forgive his father for his past actions – not to help his father, but to help Jamie heal himself and move on.
What happened to Jamie Tartt’s dad in Ted Lasso season 3?
Jamie Tartt’s dad has gone into rehab to combat his alcoholism in Ted Lasso season 3.
While Jamie may be nervous about reuniting with his father at Manchester City, his dad is nowhere to be seen during the match.
Eventually, after Jamie scores a heroic wonder goal to seal victory for Richmond, we see James Tartt’s friends, Bug and Denbo, sitting in the crowd with both raising hip flasks to Jamie’s dad, saying that he would’ve been proud of what his son has accomplished this season.
Understandably, the absence of Jamie’s dad from the scene is enough to prompt fears that he could have passed away since we last saw him.
Instead, however, it’s revealed that James Tartt is now in rehab to help control the alcohol abuse that contributed to him being such a nasty piece of work in the past.
We see Jamie’s dad watching the Man City – Richmond game on TV at the rehab center and it’s clear that he is indeed proud of his son’s efforts.
First appearance of Jamie’s mother
As well as updating fans on the whereabouts of James Tartt, episode 11 also introduces viewers to Jamie’s mother, Georgie, for the first time.
She is a character who has been mentioned occasionally throughout the series, most notably in season 1’s sixth episode when Jamie revealed that she always wanted him to be happy, while his father would get angry if he didn’t dominate his opponents.
In season 3, Jamie sneaks off from his Richmond teammates and heads off to his childhood home where he reunites with his beloved mother.
Taking on the role of Georgie is Leanne Best, a Liverpool-born actress who has starred in TV series such as Line Of Duty, Ripper Street, Cold Feet, Prime Video’s Carnival Row, Black Mirror and Tin Star.
Season 3 of Ted Lasso continues weekly on Apple TV+ until the finale airs on Wednesday, May 31, 2023.
