Tou Thao Mugshot details. According to court documents issued on Monday, a Minnesota judge convicted former Minneapolis Police officer Tou Thao guilty of aiding and abetting second-degree murder for his part in the death of George Floyd in May 2020.

Judge Peter Cahill stated in a 177-page decision that Thao “actively encouraged his three colleagues’ dangerous, prone restraint of Floyd” despite Thao’s knowledge that the posture could result in lethal suffocation.

However, Thao deliberately chose to contribute to Floyd’s demise intentionally.

He restrained the worried onlookers and even stopped a Minneapolis firefighter not on duty from providing Floyd with the life-saving care he desperately needed.

The verdict brings to a close a string of state and federal trials for the four former officers involved in Floyd’s death.

This shooting was caught on camera and ignited protests worldwide against Police brutality against Black people.

More Details On This Case

In June 2021, Chauvin was given a 22.5-year prison term after being found guilty of second-degree deliberate murder, third-degree murder, and second-degree manslaughter in state court.

He admitted guilt in federal court to depriving Floyd of his rights and another unrelated civil rights violation and was given a 21-year jail term. He is completing both phrases at the same time.

In a federal court, Lane, Kueng, and Thao were found responsible for Floyd’s civil rights violations and for failing to stop Chauvin during the restraint.

Thao was found guilty of the federal charges in February 2022 and is currently serving a 3.5-year term.

In the state proceedings, Kueng and Lane were given jail terms of 3.5 years and 3 years after entering guilty pleas to second-degree manslaughter aiding and abetting.

Thao consented to a trial by stipulated evidence in the state case in October 2022, giving up his right to a jury trial and enabling Cahill to decide his fate after considering the evidence offered by both sides.

Tuesday calls to the Floyd family’s and Thao’s legal counsel did not immediately receive a response. The judgment date is August 7.
