Rudy's Tacos raising money for prostate cancer

Rudy’s Tacos is hosting a fundraiser for the month of September, to provide free prostate cancer screenings and to help educate people about this disease.

According to the American Cancer Society prostate cancer is the second most common cancer among men.

One in six men will get prostate cancer during his lifetime and 1 in 36 will die of the disease.

Kevin Quijas is now the owner of Rudy’s Tacos after his father Rudy lost his battle to the disease almost 23 years ago.

Quijas said Rudy’s has been in business for nearly 43 years with 12 stores in total.

The fundraiser allows people to dine at any Rudy’s Tacos location in the Quad Cities and donate, receiving a coupon for free chips and salsa during their next visit for the remainder of the month.

Quijas said the disease is the most common, yet most preventable disease if detected early.

“My dad passed away with prostate cancer way too early in life he was diagnosed at 53 years old,” Quijas said. “He probably had it for two years before that before he even knew he had it,” said Quijas. “His dying words were for us to educate the public and just try to get as many people screened as early as possible,” said Quijas.

Rudy’s is also sponsoring the one mile walk at the Quad City marathon Saturday to raise money as well.

The money donated to the cause will go toward counseling to help the men and their families suffering from the disease, as well as provide free prostate cancer screenings.
