Richard Mendez Obituary: In loving memory of police officer killed in Thursday night shooting at the Philadelphia International Airport.
The identity of the Philadelphia police officer who was shot and killed while reporting for duty at the Philadelphia International Airport late on Thursday night has been released.
When he and another officer rushed to the sound of glass breaking and made an attempt to stop a car break-in inside the parking garage, police say 50-year-old Philadelphia police officer Richard Mendez was fatally shot. According to the police, the intervention turned into a struggle with the suspect, who then started shooting at the policemen.
Mendez was struck multiple times. Officer Raul Ortiz sustained an arm injury. Both were sent to local hospitals where Ortiz was reported in stable condition and Mendez was declared dead.
A suspect was shot during the incident, according to interim police commissioner John Stanford, who also verified it during a news conference on Friday in the early afternoon. However, the suspect fled the area in a black Dodge Durango before more police arrived. The wounded suspect was dropped off at Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia by the same Dodge Durango, according to police, who believe it arrived shortly after the shooting.
Shortly after being dropped off, the suspect, who has since been identified as 18-year-old Jesus Herman Madera-Duran, was pronounced dead.
Officer Mendez was a son, brother, husband, nephew, cousin, uncle and father. He was married with a daughter, and had been with Philadelphia Police for 22 years.
