Retta’s Weight Loss Struggles Were Made More Bearable By Her Fashion Choices

Marietta Sangai Sirleaf, better known as Retta, is a stand-up comedian and actress from the United States. She is best known for her role as Donna Meagle on the popular American sitcom Parks and Recreation.

While her funny jokes, colorful outfits and cheerful personality give the impression that she wasn’t worried about anything, the actress revealed that she used to be self-conscious about her weight.

Retta opens up about her weight loss struggles and how she overcame them in her honest and humorous memoir, ‘So Close to Being the Sh*t; Y’all Don’t Even Know,” was released in 2018.

Self-image concerns seem inevitable in Hollywood, where appearances are scrutinized to the extreme. In an interview with The Curvy Fashionista, the comedian admitted that being an oversized actress in Hollywood can be difficult. She realizes that losing weight is difficult for her and admits that others have overcome more incredible adversities than she has.

“The life of an oversized actress can be AMAZING. But, as far as I know, everyone has their problems,” she explains. She continued: “Everybody is going through greater adversity than I am. I am responsible for finding happiness in whatever situation I find myself in.”

Likewise, Retta wrote about her diet and exercise experiences in her memoirs. She recalls a time when she became obsessed with exercise. During that time, she lost 50 pounds and went from a size 28 to a size 18. However, she said she was not satisfied. The weight loss made her realize that she would rather live an everyday life than be skinny.

“You have to be happy in your ordinary life, otherwise you will not be able to survive your journey towards your goal,” she wrote while sharing her experience. So does weight loss; you still have to be satisfied. “Once you do that, good things start to happen.” You seem more confident with the rest of the world.

The 51-year-old actress is currently wearing a size 22 and is happy with that. As stated in another blog, she strikes a balance between choosing healthy foods and eating what she wants. “I’m lactose intolerant, but if you told me I couldn’t eat cheese for the rest of my life, I’d slap you in the face.”

Retta feels empowered by her fashion choices.

Retta wrote in her memoir that fashion helped her feel comfortable with her body size. In the early days, the actress said that she only wore a uniform with slits and buttons because she felt that skirts, dresses or jeans would not look good on her figure. Her perspective changed after she started attending more red carpet events. She realized that she didn’t have to be skinny to look great.

Looking in the mirror is an emotional experience. I love how my body looks in the dress I choose because I like it better than hiding… I finally feel what many women go through when shopping. I want more, MORE than the adrenaline rush that comes with getting something perfect and new.

Retta has since become a fashionista and fan loves her Instagram account, where she regularly posts pictures of herself wearing gorgeous dresses, such as the one below, in which she posed in a floral dress.
