pernicious anemia

Dad was on the B12 injections for years too, long before dementia was diagnosed. He was on a routine 3 monthly amount. Blood tests when he was older showed he still was lacking B12, and the dose was doubled.

It might be worth checking when your father in law last had his blood tested in case he needs an adjustment.

Dad's damage was permanent because the pernicious anemia was not diagnosed in time. My mother's sister recognised his symptoms as their father had died of it when mum was very young. That was before the vitamin injections were invented. The doctor took some convincing to do the test, and only did it to shut her up in the end. It was some years before the nerve damage became evident, but the consultant said then that B12 deficiency was the cause.

We will never be sure of course. Dad had many other health problems, and it was impossible for him to have a brain scan. We did not know until too late that there was a link with dementia.

best wishes, Jean
