QC Salvation Army heading to Puerto Rico

The Salvation Army in Davenport is sending a relief team to Puerto Rico to provide aid to the victims of Hurricane Maria.

The category 4 hurricane swept through the U.S. territory just over a month ago.

Extensive damage and the terrain of the island have made it very difficult to provide aid to the millions who call the island home.

The Salvation Army as a whole has been working to help out — and have impacted about a third of the 3.4 million people living there.

Local 4 News spoke with members of the Salvation Army today, and some have a very personal connection to the island.

“There was a little misunderstanding who was okay who was not but when I came down and asked for names there was only four or five,” Salvation Army Captain Alex Velasquez said. “And, they might be alright and they may not be, that’s the nervous part, because they can’t communicate.”

The Salvation Army captain and his team will be leaving on Saturday and plan to stay for at least two weeks.

They don’t yet know where they’ll be staying. They said the best way to help is through monetary donations.
