One-Punch Man Just Dropped a Huge Clue About God’s Motives
Warning: contains spoilers for One-Punch Man chapter #167!
The hit manga One-Punch Man just dropped a major clue on the nature of its most mysterious character, the villain known as God. A panel in chapter #167 once again teases God’s connection to Earth’s Moon, explaining many references that appeared before now in the manga.
God appeared for the first time in chapter #109 of the digital manga, as the entity that granted Homeless Emperor his powers, transforming him from a homeless man into a powerful monster who defeated many top-tier heroes. God then appeared to several other characters, including Psykos, Tatsumaki, Garou, and even Saitama, every time offering great power to realize their most fervent wishes. The S-Class Rank 1 hero Blast, however, warned his allies of the danger posed by God, as the mysterious being is apparently trapped by a “dimensional seal” and trying to break free by corrupting people with his powers. Garou was the latest to accept God’s offer, and he became so strong that he is now able to fight on par with Saitama.
On multiple occasions, the manga has implied that there is a connection between God and the Moon. The satellite appears many times during the battle between the Hero Association and the Monster Association, as if it is an eye watching the battlefield. Also, when God takes away Homeless Emperor’s powers and life, to stop him from revealing his existence, he appears standing on the Moon. In chapter #167 of One-Punch Man, this mystery is perhaps solved. In a panel showing the dark side of the Moon, at the center of a huge crater, something is barely visible: it looks like the spine of a colossal body, buried deep within the Moon. This could be God, trapped inside Earth’s satellite, which would explain many of the things that Blast has said since his appearance. The position of the spine would also fit God’s pose when he appeared to Saitama, Flashy Flash, and Oculette.

Many times Blast talked about a “dimensional seal,” especially when the battle between Saitama and Garou apparently damaged it. It is obvious, then, that God is trapped or contained in some way, even if he is still able to exert his influence by tempting people into becoming his “vessels.” However, the small detail in chapter #167 hints that God’s prison is, in fact, the Moon. This changes how fans may understand God’s motives as – while it’s clear the villain wants to be freed – it seems possible this could be achieved by immediate, physical means. His lending of power may not be about sowing conflict on a metaphysical level, but in instigating the Moon’s destruction.
It’s also interesting to note that the crater in the panel is not the same one created by Saitama when Boros blasted him to the Moon, as this one is actually on the dark side, facing away from Earth. It could be, however, that Saitama’s impact had some repercussions and weakened God’s seal, which would explain his increased activity. For the moment, God’s origin remains a mystery, but One-Punch Man has all but confirmed that the ultra-powerful threat resides within the Moon.
