Not getting netflix in 4k here’s how to fix it
More and more movies and shows are coming out in 4K or UHD (Ultra High Definition) formats for people who have 4K smart televisions. Netflix has 4K movies, but people often want to know how to tell which ones are 4K and which ones aren’t. If you are watching Netflix on your smart TV, you may be one of those people who want to know. Continue reading to find out how to tell if a Netflix Show is 4K.
Make Sure You Have a Premium Subscription
The first step is to make sure that you have a Premium Netflix subscription because you will not be able to stream any shows or movies in 4K if you don’t. Be sure that you have the right subscription so that 4K shows will be available for you. Netflix streams 4K shows at 2160p, which is Ultra High Definition. This is a much better picture than ordinary HD, which is often broadcast in an upscaled 720p at 1080i.
Make Sure You Have a 4K TV
You won’t be able to stream a 4K show without a 4K television. Usually, a 4K TV is 2160p, and it has a resolution of 3840 x 2160 pixels. You can also get an 8K TV with an even sharper image, but you only need a 4K television. In addition, you will need to make sure that your TV is HDCP 2.2-compliant. It should have 4K copy protection. If you are using an external device, it needs to support HDMI 2.0.
If you have an older television, even if it is 4K, you need to make sure that it supports the Netflix required standards listed above. In addition, you will see that Netflix chooses recommended television models each year, so if yours is in the list, it will likely show you shows in 4K.
Make Sure You Have an Appropriate Broadband Package
Finally, you will need to make sure that you have a good Internet connection. You need to have at least 25 Mbps for your connection for a good experience streaming in 4K. Otherwise, your connection isn’t fast enough.
The average broadband connection speed is 61 Mbps, so it is likely that you will be fine, but you need to check because you have to upgrade your broadband if you don’t. If your connection is too slow, you won’t be able to stream shows in 4K.
If you meet all of these conditions and the show you are watching comes in 4K, Netflix will automatically select this option. However, you can check to make sure that it is 4K. You can tell if the content is 4K by looking under the title. It will say Ultra HD 4K or Dolby Vision. It will not say HD.
It is important that your 4K device is plugged into an HDCP 2.2 compliant HDMI port rather than the other ports added to the sides of televisions. You can also use your TVs OSD to find out what the incoming resolution is. Simply push the I button to find out.
Netflix has over 800 UHD shows and programs, and you can watch them in UHD. Make sure that the show is available in 4K by checking under the title. Then, you need to make sure that you have the right equipment.
You will need to have a premium subscription with Netflix, as well as a 4K television. If your television doesn’t broadcast in 4K, then you won’t be able to watch a 4K show. It should also be HDCP 2.2- compliant and support HDMI 2.0. You should also check your broadband connection because it needs to be at least 25 Mbps to broadcast in 4K.
If you follow the steps above, you will know whether your show is 4K or not. You need to meet all of these conditions to stream shows in 4K.

If you’re constantly watching it on standard definition, there are a few changes you can make.
FOR THOSE OF you regularly watching Netflix through your laptop, you will have known that the type of speeds you have can affect image quality, but where you’re watching a show and your settings can play a part in image quality.
One of the easiest changes you can make with your settings is data usage. It recommends that if you want to stream in HD, you should have an internet connection that is 5Mb/s or faster.
It’s still possible to watch HD with slower speeds but you’ll have to wait for it to load up properly. In the meantime, it will play the show or movie in lower quality so you’re not waiting around (but you’re probably better off giving it a minute or two to load up before you watch it).
If you want to stream 4K or Ultra HD quality shows, you will need a 25MB/s or faster connection.
Even so, you can adjust the streaming quality so you’re getting the best quality possible. By going into Your Account > Playback Settings, you can change the data usage per screen setting from auto (which takes into account your speeds and data usage) to low, medium or high. It can take up to eight hours for these settings to take effect.
The same thing can be done on the mobile app when you go into App Settings, except that deals with mobile data.
If you’re streaming with anything other than high (or Auto if you have a fast connection), you’re not going to get HD quality from Netflix.
What you’re watching it on
Another thing to take into consideration is where you’re watching Netflix. That may sound trival but it’s worth keeping in mind. Chances are you might not know that each device has a max resolution they can stream in.
480p – Playstation Vita, iPhone, Android, Windows Phone, 3DS, Roku 1 (without HDMI), Wii.
720p – Chrome, Firefox, Opera.
1080p – Internet Explorer, Microsoft Edge, Safari, Roku, Chromecast, Ps3, PS4, Xbox 360, Xbox One, Wii U.
Your contributions will help us continue to deliver the stories that are important to you
For Netflix, the resolution on Internet Explorer is better than what you will get on Firefox (pictured) or Chrome. Source: Edward Smith/EMPICS Entertainment
If you think about it, these resolutions make sense. For the majority of 480p modes, you’re watching them on a small screen so you wouldn’t notice higher resolution. If you’re watching on an older device like a Wii, you’re better off changing.
On a browser, the same thing applies. If you’re watching a show like House of Cards on your laptop, then the difference between 720p and 1080p isn’t going to be particularly noticeable.
But if you decide to hook up your laptop to a larger screen like a HDTV, then you will notice the difference. The bigger the screen, the bigger role screen resolution plays.
If you’re watching on a TV and you’re not getting the right quality, then it could be down to a few things. The data modes listed above affect all devices (not just your laptop) while your internet speeds play a significant impact, but another potential reason could be the type of plan you’re on.
The usual plan is two screens + HD, but there are two other plans. A standard definition one where you only have one screen available, and a HD and Ultra HD plan which lets you watch on four screens at the same time. It’s no harm in checking to see if you’re on the right plan or not.
If none of that works, then it might be worth looking at your internet service provider (ISP) to see if something is the issue. Considering that it’s an issue that’s cropped up before, it mightn’t be a bad idea to check.
Netflix’s first 4K offerings, including original series “House of Cards” and a couple of nature documentaries, are now available to stream to compatible 2014 4K TVs.
The first real dose of non-proprietary 4K content is now available.
Netflix confirmed Sunday that it has begun streaming 4K versions of its original series “House of Cards,” as well as “some nature documentaries.” The streaming giant’s 4K plans were first revealed last year .
Netflix’s 4K streams are only viewable on 2014 4K TVs that include a built-in H.265/HEVC decoder. That includes most of the major-brand 4K sets announced at CES , the earliest of which are starting to ship now.
Until now, the only way for owners of 4K TVs to view 4K content at home was via Sony’s video player, which only works with Sony’s 4K TVs, or YouTube, which offers a small selection of generally low-quality 4K clips. Samsung will also offer a similar proprietary video player that’s only compatible with its 4K TVs.
People who invested in a 2013 4K TV — against our advice — cannot view the streams (although at least one 2013 set we know of, the Samsung UNF9000 with the addition of the SEK-2500V kit , is upgradeable to handle HEVC). The same goes for upcoming 4K streams from Amazon, Comcast , Fox , and others, which will roll out later this year.
CNET has not yet obtained a 2014 4K TV to review, so we can’t test the quality of the stream firsthand. The UK reviews site HDTVTest did, however, and posted a report on its picture quality using the Netflix app and a 2014 Samsung UNH8500.
As we and others expected, Netflix’s streaming 4K video, delivered at 15.6 Mbps, still showed signs of compression, and the test concluded “we still think that reference-level 1080p Blu-ray transfers like ‘Oblivion’ look cleaner especially during busier sequences.” On the other hand, HDTVTest says it looked appreciably better than Netflix’s previous best, its so-called SuperHD.
We look forward to testing it ourselves when we get the chance.
No Sound Using Netflix. I am trying to watch a movie on Netflix and the audio does not work. There is no sound. Is this an issue with Netflix or an issue with my equipment? I am using Roku and sometimes my Xbox or Playstation to watch Netflix. Do you know what I have to do to get Netflix to get sound? I have the same issue sometimes with all 3 of the devices I mentioned when trying to stream. The video always plays but not the audio/sound.
Netflix Has No Sound – How To Fix
If your streaming device is connected directly to the TV you may not be getting sound from Netflix because you are trying to stream in surround sound 5.1 Dolby Digital.
ALL NETFLIX STREAMING DEVICES CONNECTED DIRECTLY TO TV:
Some movies or TV shows streamed from Netflix do not stream the proper audio output for the audio selection you are using, therfore you cannot hear the sound. You will need to go into the audio settings of the device you are using and change the surround sound to anything but 5.1 Dolby Digital. Try using a non 5.1 audio selection. This should fix the issue and Netflix will have sound.
RESET ALL COMPONENTS TO GET SOUND FROM NETFLIX:
If this still does not work, disconnect your modem and router for 30 seconds, reset the device you are using to stream Netflix, and reset or restart your TV. This “refreshing” of all components will sometimes fix the issue and you will get sound from Netflix.
SURROUND SOUND DOES NOT WORK WITH NETFLIX:
If you have surround sound connected to your TV and you hear no sound when streaming Netflix, go into the settings of your surround sound component and change the setting to anything but 5.1. By changing the audio setting to something besides 5.1, you will get sound from Netflix.
APPLE TV HAS NO SOUND WITH NETFLIX:
If you have Apple TV 4 Go to Settings, Audio and Video, Surround Sound, Best Quality Available to turn on the surround sound. If Best Quality Available does not fix the problem, select the Stereo audio setting. This should fix the issue with Neflix not getting sound and you will now be able to hear sound from your Apple device.
PLAYSTATION DOES NOT HAVE SOUND WITH NETFLIX:
Go to the PlayStation home screen, go to Settings, Sound Settings, Audio Output Settings, Highlight the cable you are using to connect the PlayStation to your TV, press X. If you select Audio Input Connector/SCART/AV MULTI then press X to save the settings and try Netflix once again. If you have selected HDMI cable, go to Manual, be sure just Linear PCM 2. CH 44.1 kHz & Linear PCM 2, Ch 48 kHz are selected. Be sure Dolby Digital and Dolby Digital Plus are not checked. Your Playstation should now play Netflix and the sound will be heard.
This is important information directly from Netflix:
If the movie or TV show you are watching has 5.1 Dolby available, make sure this option is selected within the Audio & Subtitles menu during playback.
Please note that not every episode or season of a 5.1 supported TV show may have 5.1 available.
However, it is supported in the Netflix app for Windows 8 and Windows 10.
To check if your device supports 5.1 audio, go to any Netflix original to see if there is a 5.1 audio option.
If not, your device may not support this feature, or it may need to be turned on.
