New Amsterdam fans are worried Anupam Kher died in real life

The New Amsterdam fandom has been increasingly worried over character deaths and actor departures recently, including fans’ recent concern for actor, Anupam Kher.
We recap what happened to Dr. Vijay Kapoor on the show and answer the question: Did Anupam Kher die? – in order to put the record straight.
New Amsterdam is based on the book Twelve Patients: Life and Death at Bellevue Hospital by Eric Manheimer, and follows Dr. Max Goodwin (Ryan Eggold) who is looking to reform one of the United States’ oldest public hospitals.

Anupam Kher’s real-life status
Actor Anupam Kher did not die and is still alive and well, which is good news to settle worried New Amsterdam fans.
In light of the actor’s recent exit from the show, combined with the death of Kher’s character, some fans were worried as to why the character was killed off in the first place and assumed the worst.
Past television shows have dealt with the death of an actor by having the character suddenly pass away in the show as well. Series such as 8 Simple Rules had father, Paul Hennessy, die in the narrative after actor, John Ritter, sadly passed away in real life.
Here’s what happened to Dr. Vijay Kapoor
Dr. Vijay Kapoor died during New Amsterdam season 4 episode 13 due to complications relating to COVID-19.
Fans were primed and ready for a death this season with a worried glance in the direction of Dr. Vijay Kapoor, after he resigned at the end of season 3.
The series previously showed how Vijay had contracted COVID-19 and consequently had to undergo open-heart surgery.
The rehabilitation process after contracting the virus and receiving surgery was the reason why the character decided to resign from his position.

Anupam Kher’s descion to leave New Amsterdam
In April 2021, actor Anupam Kher announced that he would not be returning for season 4 of New Amsterdam due to personal reasons.
Kher posted a statement on his Instagram stating that his wife, Kirron Kher, had been receiving treatment for a type of blood cancer and it is thought that the actor wanted to care for his wife during that time.
In a separate Instagram post, Kher had the following to say about his character’s departure:
“It was an incredibly special time for me to be part of this show and one I will never forget. The New Amsterdamfamily will always hold a special place in my heart. I am grateful to the audience for their love, support, and good wishes, particularly for my wife, Kirron, at this time. I hope you all will continue to join me on my journey and future projects.”
