Maria Brink, frontman of heavy metal band In This Moment, overcame the pain of being sexually abused by her father as a child and faced a drug-addicted mother to create a better life for herself and her son. Brink, a single mother of one, sees the birth of her son as a turning point in her life that helps her get out of the dark path she’s on.

At the age of 15, Maria Brink became a single mother.

The singer did not finish high school because she became pregnant at the age of 15 when she was in 9th grade. She moved out and worked at a local laundromat to cover the living expenses of her son, Davion Brink. Although life as a single mother is very stressful, Brink has never regretted being a single mother at such a young age because her child already had the strength she needed. In an interview with Times Union, she described how he rescued her.

It was the best thing that could happen to me since I was on a dark road, and my baby gave me the courage and motivation I needed. The 43-year-old metal vocalist is unmarried and has never been married. She has raised Davion as a single mother for the past 28 years and has never revealed his father’s name.

Brink wrote “Daddy’s Falling Angel” for her band’s debut album, Beautiful Tragedy, published in 2007, and she has spoken about her harrowing plight of being abused as a child by her father. It also describes how he later abandoned her and her mother. The metal singer’s mother was always there for her, even though she had a drug problem at times. During that difficult time, her grandparents encouraged and supported her, and she was able to help her mother overcome her heroin addiction.

In addition to having grandparents who encouraged her to come see her performances and a supportive, free-spirited mother who stood by her side through all difficulties and challenges, she also has an artist son with whom she connects through the expressive and performing arts. Brink’s son, Davion, may not be a singer, but he inherited his mother’s artistic qualities to become a fashion designer with a clothing line called Etrice. According to his profile on Instagram, he presents himself as a fashion artist, creative director, entrepreneur and brujo.

His first art event, titled ‘SYNTHESIS’, took place at Electric City Couture in October 2020, with his mother as the event’s co-producer. The event’s visual artist was Alyssa Objio, who also happens to be Davion’s girlfriend. The fashion artist has identified herself as a mixed black person. Although his father’s identity is not known to the public, he probably knew about it. In the post, he also shares how he knows what it’s like to be torn down and that he’s decided on purpose to help build others, especially the Black community. He also called on others to join in building each other up. While it was a challenge on social media, he stood his ground.
