Lions will need QB Goff’s ‘superpowers’ in NFC Championship
SANTA CLARA, Calif. (WOOD) — The Detroit Lions will take on the San Francisco 49ers in the NFC Championship game on Sunday. This is a Super Bowl run that is 58 years in the making.
The Lions, led by quarterback and Bay Area native Jared Goff, are one victory away from their first appearance in the Super Bowl.
Goff has won Lions fans and his teammates over with his steady, heady play. During the playoffs, he’s completed nearly 75% of his passes.
Goff might not be as mobile as Patrick Mahomes or Lamar Jackson, but when he protects the ball, the Lions win.
In their five losses this season, Goff turned it over 10 times. It happens, but so far in the playoffs, there have been zero turnovers.
Lions head coach Dan Campbell marvels at Goff’s cool, calm demeanor.
“Goff’s superpowers are his ability to read a defense, stay calm, stay resilient. His ability to make an accurate throw, off-platform throws, to move in the pocket, to get us in the right play,” Campbell said. “I guess resiliency is the same thing, is if things don’t go well, you get in the second half, he’s able to adjust and bounce back. That is his superpowers.”
The Lions will need Goff’s superpowers to be at maximum level. The 49ers are a 7.5-point favorite at home.
The Lions and the 49ers will play Sunday at 6:30 p.m.
