Konami to Shut Down Metal Gear Solid V PS3 and Xbox 360 Servers
Today, Konami announced that the online servers for the six-year-old Metal Gear Solid V on legacy consoles will be taken down in early 2022. The single-player portion of the game will still be able to be played indefinitely. However, starting today August 31, 2021, the microtransactions system is the first to be shut down and PS3 and Xbox 360 MGSV players can no longer purchase any DLCs.
Later on November 30, Konami will take down all Metal Gear Online DLCs. Next year on March 1st MGSV will be pulled from the consoles’ digital storefront, then finally followed with the shutting down of the multiplayer server on May 31. No refunds will be made for any in-game items you’ve bought. Changes to the schedule may also be made without prior notice.

Metal Gear Solid V debuted on September 1, 2015, for PS3, PS4, Xbox 360, Xbox One, and PC. Aside from the classic PVP multiplayer mode Metal Gear Online, the game also incorporated a number of side activities in the single-player mode through its online servers. Among them is the ability to raid other players’ Forward Operating Base and steal their resources as well as the hidden Nuclear Disarmament ending cutscene.
As its name suggests, the event will only be unlocked when every single player on a platform managed to disarm their supply of nukes. Although it was triggered early for PC players in 2018 because of technical error, the cutscene was unlocked legitimately without any hacks or tricks by PS3 players in 2020. You can watch it above. It’s a shame that Metal Gear Solid servers have to be shut down, but that’s how it goes for most online-capable games out there.
