In August 2020 Jonnie was filming for A Place in the Sun in Italy and he got the first warning sign that something was wrong when his vision. He faced blurry while driving and he tested and soon revealed he had lung cancer which had spread to his brain.

Jonnie Irwin was given only six months to live. His stage four lung cancer had spread to his brain, and he suffered from occasional blurred vision.

“Within a week of flying back from filming, I was being given six months to live,” he recalls. “I had to go home and tell my wife, who was looking after our babies, that she was on her own pretty much. That was devastating. All I could do was apologise to her. I felt so responsible.”

Irwin wanted to make his illness public which would inspire his fans and make him feel more vigorous and Channel 4’s attitude made him frustrated, which broke his heart.

Channel 4 mentioned the inability to secure insurance coverage for Irwin’s international shoots as the reason for dropping him.

Jonnie revealed this in an interview with HELLO! magazine, Jonnie Irwin speaks for the first time about how he has been diagnosed with lung cancer which has spread to his brain and he keeps his illness private and speaks only “the monkey off my back”.
