Murray is more well-known for helping Sloane Stephens win a grand slam championship as her coach. At age eight, she relocated to Atlanta to continue her training with Donald Young’s dad. Donald Young Sr. and Townsend’s mother are good friends because they were childhood tennis partners on the South Side of Chicago.
When Townsend was 14, he decided to join the USTA development program and relocated to Boca Raton, Florida. After the USTA declined to pay for Townsend to attend the 2012 US Open, Murray and XS Tennis held a fundraiser to raise about $1,000 to send him to the tournament.
Townsend then began training with Zina Garrison in the D.C. area and with Murray in Chicago. Her coach since 2015 has been Donald Young Sr. Townsend aspires to play tennis like Martina Navratilova, whom she admires.

Professional Career of Taylor Townsend
After losing in the first round at Wimbledon, Taylor Townsend competed in her first Grand Slam tournament at the 2014 US Open. She entered the WTA’s top 100 in 2015.
Her singles ranking dropped, but she fought back and made it back into the top 100 in 2017. In the same year, she climbed all the way up to number 64 in the world. In doubles competition at the 2016 US Open, she advanced to the semifinals.
Townsend finished in the top ten for the first time in her career in 2019. She advanced to the quarterfinals of the 2019 US Open after beating Simona Halep, the world’s No. 4 player and a two-time Grand Slam winner.
Townsend fought off match points to beat Halep. Her performance in the round of 16 is her best at a Grand Slam tournament so far. Bianca Andreescu, the eventual winner, defeated her in the fourth round.
