Ilaiyaraaja was born in a Dalit family in the Theni district, Tamil Nadu, India. He learned music from Dhanraj Master and master changed his name to Raaja. When he got his movie, Tamil film producer Panchu Arunachalam added “Ilaiya” as a prefix in his name Raaja, and he named him “Ilaiyaraaja”.
