Hozier’s Eat Your Young lyrics meaning explained

Hozier’s Eat Your Young lyrics hold a much deeper meaning than just personal temptation and salvation. The song’s title itself raises curiosity as Eat Your Young could mean the future generation’s early death or how the current generation is ‘eating’ the young.

The song starts with talking about personal lust and the need to devour all earthly things as Hozier sings, “I’m starvin’, darlin’/ Let me put my lips to something/ Let me wrap my teeth around the world.”

But the song takes on a new meaning in the chorus when Hozier says, “Get some/ Pull up the ladder when the flood comes/ Throw enough rope until the legs have swung/ Seven new ways that you can eat your young
Come and get some.” Hozier is known to sprinkle Biblical references all over his songs and here ladder could mean Jacob’s ladder aka the ladder leading to heaven.

Jacob’s ladder has seven steps of virtue which also means that there are seven ways a person can fail which in Hozier’s song becomes “Seven new ways that you can eat your young.”

The song’s meaning further gets clearer when Hozier clearly declares, “Skinning the children for a war drum/ Putting food on the table selling bombs and guns/ It’s quicker and easier to eat your young.”

Fans react to Eat Your Young, ‘stays on repeat’

Hozier fans are once again impressed by the sheer creativity of the singer who manages to put masterpieces in every release.

Speaking of the new EP, a fan said: “Eat Your Young is on repeat – bless you @Hozier for an absolute BANGER!!!!!”

Another echoed, “This song is poetry- Eat Your Young!”
