How waterproof is your apple watch

Just like the iPhone, Apple Watches are water-resistant, but not waterproof. Let’s look at what it’s safe to do while wearing your watch, and which watery activities you should avoid.

Apple Watch Water Resistance

The Apple Watch Series One has a water resistance rating of IPX7. This means it’s splash-proof and should survive a fall into water of up to three feet deep. Leaving it submerged, however, isn’t recommended. If you still have a Series One, taking it swimming with you isn’t the best idea, but the sweat from your workout or a bit of rain won’t harm it.

The Apple Watch Series Two and newer are explicitly designed to be worn in water to track swimming workouts. Instead of the IP standard, they use ISO 22810:2010, which is the watch industry’s standard for water-resistant and waterproof watches. Under this standard, they’re rated up to about 150 feet (or 50 meters), or five atmospheres of pressure.

It’s worth noting that while your Apple Watch is resistant to water, the band might not be. The following official Apple bands aren’t water-resistant:

  • Classic Buckle
  • Leather Loop
  • Modern Buckle
  • Milanese
  • Link Bracelet

The following bands are water-resistant:

  • Sport Band
  • Sport Loop
  • Nike Sport Band
  • Nike Sport Loop

Shallow Water Is Okay

So, what does all of this mean for you and your Apple Watch?

If you have a Series One, shallow water is okay to fall into, but you shouldn’t wear your watch for an open-water swim. It would probably be okay, but it’s not designed to withstand that.

If you have a Series Two or newer, swimming in shallow water in a pool, or even the ocean, is totally fine. Whenever you start a swimming workout, your Apple Watch will automatically lock the screen so it won’t respond to random phantom taps from the water.

To unlock it when you’re back on dry land, just turn the digital crown. It will expel any water inside through the speakers.

Deep and Dynamic Problems

While the Apple Watch Series Two and newer are rated to around 150 feet, that doesn’t mean you can safely use them at that depth. Rather, the seals have been tested at the pressure equivalent to 150 feet (five atmospheres) in static water. However, it’s easy to exceed that pressure even in shallow water if you fall over while waterskiing or wipe out while surfing.

So, even though a recent Apple Watch is theoretically capable of surviving at scuba depths, it almost certainly won’t in practice. Likewise, if you’re planning to do anything fast, hard, or dramatic in the water, it’s best to leave your watch on dry land.

Even cannonballing from a height into the deep end of a pool could be enough to damage your Apple Watch.

Wash After Use

The seals on an Apple Watch aren’t designed to resist corrosion or chemicals. After a swim, whether in a pool or the sea, you should wash your watch with clean water.

Also, while you can wear a Series Two or newer in the shower, some of the chemicals in shampoos, soaps, and body washes can damage the seals. Wash your Apple Watch right away if you get any of these substances on it.

Hot Water and Steam Can Also Cause Problems

Similarly, Apple Watches are really only rated for temperate water. The hot water in a Jacuzzi or the steam in a sauna can also damage the seals. It’s best not to wear your Apple Watch on a spa day.

Water-Resistance Deteriorates Over Time

Your Apple Watch’s water-resistance isn’t permanent. The seals and gaskets that keep water out break down over time, and they can’t be repaired or replaced. An older Apple Watch might not survive in the same situations a brand-new one can handle.

Exposing your Apple Watch to things like hot water, solvents, or high pressure, can wear down the seals, even if it doesn’t break them at the time.

Water-Resistant, But Not Waterproof

All Apple Watches are reasonably water-resistant. As long as you aren’t regularly waterskiing or scuba diving with it on, you don’t have to remove your Watch every time it might get a bit wet.

Just be sensible—and don’t dive straight into the deep end.

As someone who’s experienced the panic of having to quickly dry off an iPhone or MacBook after an accidental liquid spill (a potentially expensive mistake), I was a bit apprehensive when first exposing my Apple Watch Series 3 to water.

In particular, this was because I hadn’t done any research before getting into a kayak and paddling away, vaguely knowing my Watch was “water-resistant” (it did have workout options for swimming, after all) but not much else.

So you don’t have to worry like I did, here’s everything you need to know about your Apple Watch and water, including what “water-resistant” means, how to clean it, and how to use the useful Water Lock app.

Check out the products mentioned in this article:

Apple Watch Series 5 (From $399 at Best Buy)

Apple Watch Series 3 (From $199.99 at Best Buy)

Apple Watch Series 2 (Renewed) (From $173.86)

Apple Watches are varying degrees of water-resistant

All models of Apple Watch are indeed water-resistant, but not waterproof ( as Apple is careful to distinguish ).

In technical terms, the original Apple Watch and Series 1 have a water resistance rating of IPX7 under IEC (International Electrotechnical Commission) standard 60529, and Series 2, 3, 4, and 5 (the latest model) have a water resistance rating of up to 50 meters of depth under ISO standard 22810:2010 .

In short, wearing your Apple Watch while exercising (and thus exposing it to sweat) is okay, wearing it on a rainy day is okay, and even swimming with it is okay.

But wearing it while scuba diving or water skiing (submerging the watch below a shallow depth or exposing it to high velocity water) is not.

If you’re still wearing a 1st generation Apple Watch or Series 1, however, you need to be a bit more careful. Apple doesn’t recommend submerging your Apple Watch or Series 1 watches underwater , though both models are splash- and water-resistant.

You probably shouldn’t shower with your Apple Watch

While showering with your Apple Watch (Series 2, 3, 4, and 5) is okay in theory, you’ll still probably want to take off your Apple Watch because exposure to soaps, shampoos, conditioners, lotions, and perfumes can affect the efficacy of water seals and acoustic membranes (leading to muffled speaker sounds).

Water resistance is a feature that can irreversibly fade over time

Apple notes that ” water resistance isn’t a permanent condition and may diminish over time ,” adding that the Apple Watch can’t be rechecked or re-sealed for water resistance. The company lists a number of activities that can affect water resistance properties and should therefore be avoided.

The list includes dropping your Apple Watch “or subjecting it to other impacts” (ouch), wearing it in a sauna or steam room, and exposure to soap (or soapy water), perfume, solvents, detergent, acids (or acidic foods), insect repellent, lotions, sunscreen, oil, and hair dye.

It’s important to note that not all bands are water-resistant, like those made with stainless steel and leather. If you’re planning on swimming or getting your Apple Watch wet, it’d be wise to switch out the band to something more water-friendly.

How to clean your Apple Watch

Cleaning your Apple Watch is not only important for maintaining the quality of the product, it also helps to avoid skin irritation . Here’s how it’s done, according to Apple:

1. Turn off your Apple Watch. Remove it from its charger, if connected.

3. Wipe the Watch clean using a non-abrasive, lint free cloth that’s lightly dampened with fresh water.

4. Alternatively, hold the Watch under a lightly running tap of warm fresh water for 10 to 15 seconds.

5. Don’t use soap or other cleaning products to clean your Apple Watch.

6. Dry the front, back, and sides of your Apple Watch with a non-abrasive, lint-free cloth.

For more detailed information on how to clean every part of your Apple Watch, check out our article, “How to properly clean your Apple Watch, including its band and Digital Crown.”

How to activate Water Lock

The Water Lock feature, available on the Apple Watch 2, 3, 4, and 5, locks an Apple Watch’s screen to avoid accidental taps during swimming and other water-based activities. It also cleans out your Watch’s speakers once your done, which is great if you’re going to submerge your Watch at all.

There are two ways to activate this feature:

1. Start a swimming workout. Both Pool Swim and Open Water Swim workouts will automatically activate the Water Lock feature. Simply open the Workout app and tap Pool Swim or Open Water swim to begin.

2. Manually activate Water Lock by swiping up on the Watch face and tapping the water droplet icon. Upon activating the Water Lock feature, a blue water droplet will appear in the center of the Watch face.

And once you’re done, here’s how to deactivate it:

1. After a swimming workout, press the Digital Crown and side button at the same time. This will pause the workout. Turn the Digital Crown to unlock the screen. Then, swipe right and tap the X to end the workout.

2. If you manually activated Water Lock, simply turn the Digital Crown until the blue teardrop fills the circular icon. Once unlocked, Apple Watch will make a series of sounds that are intended to clear water from the Watch’s speakers. You might even feel the water being ejected from your speakers — this is entirely normal.

Is it safe to go for a swim while wearing your Apple Watch? What about while washing dishes? We look at what you can and can’t do when it comes to getting your watch wet.

How waterproof is your apple watch

Track your swims in the Activity app on your Apple Watch.

If you’re in the habit of taking your Apple Watch off before going for a dip, there’s good news: You might not have to. Odds are, if you recently got your Apple Watch, it’s waterproof. Heck, all of the newer models can withstand saltwater, and there’s even a fancy water ejection feature built into each watch that should ease your mind.

But there are some limits you should know about. For instance, water skiing is a no-go.

Everything Apple

Deciphering water resistance and waterproof ratings can be headache-inducing, but we’ve taken on that burden and break down all of the do’s and don’ts for getting your Apple Watch wet. Below you’ll find what you can and can’t do with your Apple Watch around water.

If you have a newer Apple Watch, it’s perfectly fine to go for a swim with it on.

These Apple Watch models are less water resistant

The first-generation Apple Watch — sometimes referred to as Series 0 — and the second-generation Apple Watch, the Series 1, aren’t really made to handle more than the occasional splash. Apple does not recommend submerging either model at all, as the speaker and microphone can get damaged.

If you do go for a dip with these earlier Apple Watch models, you’ll need to take the watch off and place it on its side with the speaker facing down. This will allow any water inside the cavity to drain out. Do not use a can of compressed air, or any other tool, to remove the water, as you can cause damage.

Models designed for swimming

As the Apple Watch and Apple’s approach to it as a health device has matured, so to have its capabilities. Newer Apple Watch models are not only waterproof, but they’re specifically designed for swimming. Here’s a complete list of the current Apple Watch models that you can use in the pool without a second thought:

These models have an ISO rating of 22810:2010, which means they’re designed to withstand water at up to 50 meters (164 feet) of depth.

Even with that rating, Apple doesn’t recommend wearing the watch when scuba diving or water skiing. You want to avoid a situation where water can be forced into ports of the watch at high speed or high depths.

Wearing the watch in fresh or ocean water is fine, just remember to rinse off your watch with fresh water (from a faucet) after swimming in the ocean to remove any salt. Be sure to rotate the digital crown as you do.

Wearing it in the shower isn’t the best idea, according to Apple.

Be mindful of your Apple Watch band

Not all Apple Watch bands are meant to get wet. According to Apple, the classic buckle, leather loop, modern buckle, Milanese, and link bracelet bands aren’t water resistant. Instead, you can spend a few dollars on a cheap band from Amazon , or get one of Apple’s sport or sport loop bands.

Remember to turn on the water lock before going for a dip

Your Apple Watch may have a built-in water lock to help keep your screen from activating while wet.

When swimming, get into the habit of activating Water Lock on the Apple Watch. The feature prevents water from activating the touchscreen of your watch.

Starting a Swim exercise activity automatically enables Water Lock. Otherwise, you can activate Water Lock in Control Center (swipe up on the watch face) and tap on the water drop icon.

To disable Water Lock you’ll need to turn the Digital Crown on your watch until you begin to hear a series of beeps. The noise emitted from the speaker is used to eject any water inside the cavity.

Don’t forget to turn on water lock, and then give your watch a rinse once you’re done swimming.

Better safe than sorry

Even though the Series 2 and newer are designed to withstand fresh water, it’s a good idea not to wear yours in the shower. Not only can a shower put out high-velocity water, but Apple says the chemicals in shampoos and soaps can deteriorate the watch’s water resistance.

Other chemicals to avoid include perfume, bug repellent, lotion, sunscreen, hair dye and oil. If you do get some on your watch, rinse it off with fresh water. Again, rotate the digital crown while you rinse your watch off, just to make sure any chemicals between the crown and the housing are removed.

Avoid wearing your watch in a sauna or steam room, as the heat can also impact the longevity of its water resistance.

There’s a lot of new features coming to the Apple Watch line with the release of WatchOS 7 later this year. For example, there’s a new handwashing feature that times how long you’ve been scrubbing and ensures you do it right. Apple is expected to announce the Series 6 later this year as well, and we have all the current rumors and speculation .

Pretty much every Apple Watch model has had some form of water resistance. But does that really mean you can shower with your Apple Watch? The answer isn’t as straightforward as you might expect.

Apple Watch Water Resistance

Not all Apple Watches are the same. If you have an older model wearable, it has a different water-resistance rating.

  1. For example, the Apple Watch Series 0 (released in 2015) and the Apple Watch Series 1 (released in 2016) have an IPX7 rating. That means they’re splash- and water-resistant. But you should not submerge them in water.
  2. The Apple Watch Series 2 and later are actually swim-proof. While Apple doesn’t specify what its IP rating is, the company says that it’s rated to withstand water up to 50 meters deep.

That means you can take newer Apple Watches swimming with you. But that still doesn’t mean you should shower with them.

So, You Can’t Shower with an Apple Watch?

While most Apple Watches are water-resistant and some of them are swim-proof, Apple recommends against exposing any Apple Watch to “soaps, shampoos, conditioners, lotions, and perfumes.”

Why? Because those soaps and cleaners can “negatively affect water seals and acoustic membranes.”

In other words, most of the things you usually use in your shower may damage your Apple Watch, despite the fact that water won’t.

It’s also worth noting that IP ratings aren’t static. Your Apple Watch’s water-resistance may actually diminish over time, especially if you’ve dropped it, use it in soapy water, or exposed it to other cleaners and chemicals.

Apple also notes that steam may impact the water seals, meaning a steamy shower environment may not be good for it.

Of course, there’s also the question of your Apple Watch’s band. While your silicone sport band may be fine in water, you probably shouldn’t expose your leather band to liquids.

Bottom Line

Way back in 2015, Tim Cook reportedly told a German Apple Store employee that he wore his Apple Watch Series 0 all of the time — including in the shower. Importantly, the Apple Watch Series 0 wasn’t even rated for water submersion.

That’s a testament to the fact that Apple devices routinely outperform their water-resistance ratings. But it’s probably not a best practice for most of us. Just consider the fact that Tim Cook likely doesn’t care if his Apple Watch gets ruined in the shower.

While it’s perfectly safe to take your Apple Watch in the ocean or the pool, we recommend taking Apple’s advice and avoid exposing it to any soaps or chemicals.

That means you should just take it off before getting in the shower. If you don’t, you may be inadvertently reducing its water-resistance — which could allow liquid damage to happen someday down the road.

If you do get anything other than fresh water on your Apple Watch (including saltwater), we recommend washing it off with fresh water and using a nonabrasive cloth to dry it.

Is the Apple Watch Series 5 waterproof?

The Apple Watch Series 5 is not water proof, but is water resistant to 50 Metres.

You just picked up an Apple Watch, but you don’t if you should wear it when you’re around water. “Is it waterproof, or only water-resistant?” you wonder. In this article, I’m going to answer two big questions:

  1. Are Apple Watches waterproof?
  2. Is there a difference in water-resistance between the Apple Watch Series 1, 2, and 3?

Are Apple Watches Waterproof?

Apple Watches are not waterproof, but they are water-resistant. Furthermore, the Apple Watch Series 1 has a different water-resistance rating than the Series 2 and Series 3.

Water-Resistance Of The Apple Watch Series 1

The Apple Watch Series 1 has a water-resistance rating of IPX7, meaning that it’s designed to be water-resistant while submerged up to one meter in water. The 7 in IPX7 indicates that the Apple Watch Series One received the second highest IP score for water-resistance. The highest IP score a product can receive for water-resistance is IPX8.

Water-Resistance Of The Apple Watch Series 2 & 3

The Apple Watch Series 2 and Series 3 both have a water-resistance rating of 50 meters under ISO Standard 22810:2010. Apple only recommends wearing your Apple Watch Series 2 or 3 while doing activities in shallow water, like swimming laps in a pool. You should avoid wearing your Apple Watch when water skiing, surfing, and scuba diving.

Do I Need To Turn On Water Lock?

Water Lock is a feature that was introduced for the Apple Watch Series 2 and is still integrated into the Apple Watch Series 3. It’s important to know that Water Lock doesn’t actually make your Apple Watch more water-resistant — it only locks your Apple Watch to prevent accidental taps while you’re using it around water.

Note: If you start an Open Water Swim or Pool Swim workout in the Workout app, Water Lock is automatically turned on.

To turn on Water Lock manually, swipe up from the bottom of the watch face and tap on the water drop icon. You’ll know Water Lock is on when you see the blue water drop icon at the top of the watch face.

To get out of Water Lock, quickly turn the Digital Crown until the word Unlocked appears on the watch face. When you unlock your Apple Watch from Water Lock, it plays a beeping sound which expels any water still stuck in its speaker.

Are Apple Watch Bands Waterproof?

Some Apple Watch bands are waterproof, some are water-resistant, and some provide no protection from water at all. More often than not, a band will be water-resistant, but not waterproof.

None of the Apple Watch bands you can buy directly from Apple are waterproof, but many are water-resistant. However, Apple explicitly states that the Milanese, Link Bracelet, Leather Loop, Modern Buckle, and Classic Buckle bands are not water-resistant.

Third-Party Apple Watch Bands

Be wary of third-party sellers who claim that their Apple Watch bands are waterproof. A lot of the time, their bands are water-resistant, not waterproof.

If you’re thinking about buying a waterproof band, look for the band’s IP score or other water-resistance rating. If the band has an IP score of IP68 or IPX8, that means it has the highest level of water-resistance, making it almost completely waterproof.

Does AppleCare Cover Water Damage To My Apple Watch?

AppleCare does not directly refer to covering water damage, but it does cover your Apple Watch for two incidents of accidental damage, both of which are subject to a service fee.

It’s important for you to know that water damage is not covered in AppleCare plans for iPhones, so don’t be surprised if you get quoted a large service fee from Apple.

We can’t guarantee your repair will be covered, but it doesn’t hurt to bring your Apple Watch into your local Apple Store and have them take a look at it. Before you go, we recommend booking an appointment to make sure someone will be available to help you.

Time To Swim Some Laps

Now that you know more about your Apple Watch, you can confidently take it to the beach or swimming pool. And when someone asks you, “Are Apple Watches waterproof?” you’ll know exactly what to tell them! If you have any other Apple Watch questions, leave them below in the comments section.

How waterproof is your apple watch

If you have an Apple Watch Series 2, Series 3, or the new Series 4, you’ll be able to use Water Lock, which locks the screen of your Apple Watch so you can swim without activating it. Water Lock is also used to push water out of the speaker holes on the side of your Apple Watch to prevent the water from causing any problems in the long term.

Here’s how to use Water Lock on the Apple Watch in watchOS 5.

How turn on Water Lock on Apple Watch in watchOS 5

If you start a water-based workout from the Workout app, Water Lock will automatically turn on locking your screen to prevent accidental input; however, in watchOS 5 you can turn on Water Lock at any time using Control Center.

Swipe up on the watch face to activate Control Center.

Tap Water Lock. It’s button with the water droplet.

How waterproof is your apple watch

Now your Apple Watch screen is locked and you can jump in the pool and start your laps.

How turn off Water Lock on Apple Watch in watchOS 5

When you finish your water-based workout, or anytime you want to turn off water lock you’ll need to use these steps.

    Turn the Digital Crown.

Keep turning the Digital Crown until the Apple Watch says it’s unlocked.

How waterproof is your apple watch

If you have any water in your speaker holes, this will force it out. If you want to be extra-safe and make sure you have all the water out of your Apple Watch, turn on water lock again and repeat the unlock process.

What can I do if I get my Apple Watch Series 1 or Series 0 wet?

If you have an older Apple Watch you won’t have access to the Water Lock feature because the older models are not designed to be submerged. If you think you may have water in your Apple Watch Series 1 or Series 0 here’s what Apple suggests.

“Check to see if water is in the microphone or speaker by placing the device, speaker side down, on a non-abrasive, lint-free cloth to see if any water drips out. Water in the port may degrade speaker or microphone performance until it completely evaporates.”

If you really did get water in your Apple Watch Series 1 or older, this process can take a couple of hours. Just turn your Apple Watch off and let it sit on its side for a long time, it’s always better to be safe than sorry.

The Apple Watch Series 5 carries over the design from the now-discontinued Apple Watch Series 4. It includes a larger display, thinner bezels, and more rounded corners than previous versions. New this year is an always-on display and built-in compass. With an S5 64-bit dual-core processor, the Apple Watch Series 5 doubles the performance of the Apple Watch Series 3, which is still on the market.

This Apple Watch version also features an electrocardiogram (ECG) system that’s capable of detecting whether you’re experiencing cardiac abnormalities such as atrial fibrillation. There’s also a built-in fall detection tool that automatically contacts emergency services if you fall. The Apple Watch Series 5 also includes a louder speaker, which is ideal when receiving calls, ceramic and sapphire crystal back, and increased storage capacity. The last of these is great for loading up your wearable device with podcasts and audiobooks.

With the online Apple Watch Studio, you can create your wearable device online and select the size, case, and band to match your style. Just make sure to get a waterproof band!

The Apple Watch Series 5 is available in 44mm and 40mm with GPS only and GPS + Cellular. Prices differ depending on the size of the display, material of the case, and type of watch band. And yes, these can get pricey very quickly, depending on the options. Additionally, an Apple Watch Series 6 could soon replace this model in showrooms.
