How to view Exif data on Android

Checking the Exif data of a photo on an Android phone or tablet is pretty easy. You don’t need access to any special apps. The gallery app of your phone or Google Photos can show the most important bits from the Exif data of your photos.

1. To view the metadata, open the Gallery app on your phone and browse the photo whose data you want to view.
2. Navigate to the menu and select Details. Depending on your phone’s manufacturer, the Details option may have a different name or it may be present in a different place. But you’ll be able to locate it easily.
3. The Details section will mention the Exif data of that photo. It may not include everything but it’ll show the most important bits.

If you’re using the Google Photos app, just navigate to the photo and tap on the three dots icon. The page that opens after tapping on the three dots will mention the Exif data at the bottom.

↓ 02 – ExifTool GUI | Windows

This is perhaps one of the most powerful Exif editors. Runs on both Microsoft Windows and macOS, ExifTool is a powerful editor that reads, writes and edits meta information in a wide variety of files.

ExifTool supports many different metadata formats including EXIF, GPS, IPTC, XMP, JFIF, GeoTIFF, ICC Profile, Photoshop IRB, FlashPix, AFCP and ID3, as well as the maker notes of many digital cameras by Canon, Casio, FLIR, FujiFilm, GE, HP, JVC/Victor, Kodak, Leaf, Minolta/Konica-Minolta, Nikon, Olympus/Epson, Panasonic/Leica, Pentax/Asahi, Phase One, Reconyx, Ricoh, Samsung, Sanyo, Sigma/Foveon and Sony.

↓ 03 – Exif Pilot | Windows

Exif Pilot is a Free EXIF Editor that allows you to manipulate METAdata within image files. The free version doesn’t come with batch processing, you’ll be required to pay a small fee for the addon plugin.

• View EXIF, EXIF GPS, IPTC, and XMP data.
• Edit, create EXIF, EXIF GPS, IPTC, and XMP.
• Remove EXIF, IPTC tags, and clean up all metadata
• Add, edit, and remove keywords.
• Import/export EXIF and IPTC from/to XML files.
• Import/export EXIF and IPTC from/to MS Excel files.
• Import/export EXIF and IPTC from/to Text files in CSV format.

↓ 04 – EXIFManager | Windows

EXIFManager is a free software that allows users to quickly enter image description / user comment / author on a set of pictures, inside the EXIF data and also to rename pictures files using EXIF data and a powerful format editor.

↓ 05 – Metadata++ | Windows

Metadata++ is a powerful yet easy to use freeware tool to view, edit, modify, extract, copy metadata of various file formats. Metadata++ is designed to be as fast as possible: quick navigation among directories, fast directories reading, fast and smooth painting of panels and thumbnails. Metadata++ is portable, it is configured to store all configuration and settings in the same folder that it is run from.

Almost all digital cameras record and store various camera settings, scene information, date/time the photo was taken etc as Exchangeable Image File Format (EXIF) data. This metadata is stored within the image file and won’t get lost or overwritten when copying or transferring your photos to other computers. EXIF Date Changer Lite enables you to quickly and easily adjust the date/time taken on your photos and scanned images.

Introduction: Fix EXIF to Make Rotated Photos Look Correct

If you have ever found a photo from your camera oriented the wrong way, you have probably fallen afoul of software that doesn’t handle EXIF data correctly. I had some issues with photo orientation for a while, but it became a real pain when I started uploading photos to my blog.

It appears that Instructables doesn’t operate the same way as Blogger.com, so maybe you haven’t had problems with this. Just in case, here’s the info you need to fix the problem if you come across it.

Step 1: Background

Here’s a good explanation of orientation, with much more detail than I included:

The short of it is that Microsoft Picture and Fax Viewer doesn’t correctly show the orientation of the picture — but it lets you rotate the picture so it looks right. What results is that your picture looks right in windows explorer.

However, it’s actually now wrong. Software and websites that respect the EXIF settings will “correct” the orientation, leaving you with results that you didn’t expect.

Step 2: How to Fix the EXIF

I wouldn’t recommend rotating the photos in the Microsoft picture viewer, but just in case you have already done so (or have a picture that received similar treatment), don’t worry. The picture can be saved, and quite easily. There are several EXIF editors out there, but not all of them are compatible with all systems (or even have write capability without paying). I found “EXIFeditor” and was able to get it to work.

Update: the old software disappeared, here’s a new option:

These instructions do not quite match up to the new software package, but it’s mostly the same:
-Open EXIFeditor and open the jpeg in question
-On the dropdown, scroll down to “Orientation”. Note that it may not be there unless the photo has set a value for orientation. If it has been set, it is likely something other than 1
-Change the value to 1
-Click “commit changes”

Now check your photo will look the same in picture viewer and irFanView , as well as blogger (or other web services). I perform this fix on photos that look upright in picture viewer but not other software, so now it looks correct everywhere.
