How To Enable Flash For Any Site In Windows 8 / RT Metro Internet Explorer 10

The Windows 8 conundrum is perhaps far from over, even if subdued, and whether you love it or hate it (or are completely indifferent, for that matter), it remains a fact that Apple has a really healthy competition in the tablet battlefield for the first time. Windows 8 / RT shows promise in all the right places, and brings an element of ecosystem familiarity that has gained the Cupertino giant its massive numbers quarter over quarter. Things seem to be headed in the right direction, for now.

This, however, nowhere implies that Microsoft’s offering comes free of complaints and user problems. Take, for example, the Flash support in the Metro (or perhaps, should we call it the “Modern” UI) version of Windows 8 and Windows RT, which is seriously limited. Why? Because apparently, taking a leaf out of Apple’s book, Microsoft controls and decides which websites should be Flash-enabled for that browser.

While that shouldn’t be much of a problem on perhaps the Desktop version of Windows 8, what if you wanted to browse a website with Flash support on your Surface tablet? You may either choose to go against Microsoft, or you can head over to XDA-Developers, where Marvin_S has come up with an immensely simple yet effective hack for bypassing this restriction.

How it works?

Before we look at what you’ll need to hack your Windows 8/RT’s Metro Internet Explorer, let’s discuss how this works. In the native Modern browser for Windows 8 and RT, Microsoft has opted for a limited Flash support through the use of a whitelist, whereby only the domains contained within the list can display Flash content. Microsoft continues to update the list and sync your browser with their servers, so you always have the latest version.

This workaround takes control of that list and adds websites of your choice to it, so you can enable Flash-based content on any website you like, and not get an environment similar to Apple’s closed operating system.

What you need?

Virtually nothing outside of the regular tools that are already present in your system – the new URLs are added through Notepad.

You will, however, have to change IE’s behavior to un-synchronize the whitelist from Microsoft’s servers. To do that, launch the Desktop version of Internet Explorer 10 in Windows 8 and go to Tools > Compatibility View Settings. There, deselect the option that says “Download updated compatibility list from Microsoft” to ensure local administration of the whitelist. Should you not make this adjustment, all changes that you make to the list yourself will be overwritten at the next sync.

Adding new websites to Flash-enabled list

Step 1: Launch IE10’s Flash compatibility list (administered through a file named “iecompatdata.xml”) located here:

You can either locate this in Explorer, or perform a search in the root drive (C:) of your operating system.

Step 2: Alternatively, you may launch iecompatdata.xml directly in Notepad for editing by entering the following string in the Run dialog (Win + R)

notepad “%HOMEPATH%\AppData\Local\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\IECompatData\iecompatdata.xml”

Step 3: Locate the meta tags and ; any website contained within these will display Flash content. Simply add your desired website’s URL here, save the changes and you’re good to go.

Step 4: Once you’ve modified the list to your liking, the last step is to delete IE’s browsing history. Launch IE10’s Modern version, go to Settings > Internet Options > Delete browsing history. It may also be wise to restart the browser as well, for good measure.

And you’re done! All the websites in your whitelist will display Flash content on Windows 8 & Windows RT’s Metro offerings, and will be locally administered instead of being synced with Microsoft.

If your default web browser in Windows 8 is the modern Internet Explorer 10 (IE10), then you have most probably noticed that it doesn’t play flash videos on some of your favorite websites. This is not that IE10 does not support Flash videos. It is actually a security measure in IE10 that plays Flash videos on white listed websites only. This tutorial will show you how to manually add your favorite websites to this list in order for you to watch flash videos.

To get started follow the steps below.

Step 1: Launch IE10 in desktop mode. If the browser opens up in modern user interface, right-click on your mouse anywhere inside the window, and from the context menu that appears select View on the desktop option.

Step 2: While you are in IE10 desktop mode, click Tools (if you can’t see tools menu press Alt button on your keyboard and it will appear) and then from the drop-down menu select Compatibility view settings.

Step 3: IE10 Compatibility View Settings window will open up. From this window un-select the checkbox in front of Download updated compatibility lists from Microsoft option. This will ensure that the manually added websites in the white list will not be removed when Microsoft updates this white list.

Step 4: Now close IE10 and launch the Run window by pressing Win+R on your keyboard.

Step 5: Inside the newly opened window type following %LOCALAPPDATA%\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\IECompatData\iecompatdata.xml and press Enter on your keyboard.

Step 6: This will open a file that has a full list of white listed website’s for IE10. You can use Notepad to open and edit the file.

Step 7: Now locate the keyword and under this element type domain name for each website you want to add. For example, to add TheTechJournal you have to type thetechjournal.com in the list.

Step 8: Repeat Step 7 for all other websites which you want to add to white list.

Step 9: Click on File in the main menu, and from the drop-down menu choose Save.

Step 10: You can now close the file and IE10 will show Flash videos in all of your favorite websites.

Windows 8 ships with two versions of Internet Explorer 10. First, the regular version that runs on the desktop and packs all the features one would expect from a browser, and then the Start screen version of IE10, which is a plug-in free version that is limited in what you can do with it on the Internet and locally.

Microsoft has integrated Adobe’s Flash Player natively into Internet Explorer 10, but there are again differences in the implementation between the desktop and start screen version of the browser.

You can run Flash content on all websites using the desktop version of Internet Explorer 10 on Windows 8. When you try to do the same with the “Modern UI” version, you will notice that it plays Flash content only on some websites. YouTube for instance works fine, but other services like the excellent Zero Punctuation do not work at all.

While you could switch to the desktop version of Internet Explorer 10 to load websites that do not work on the Start screen version of IE10, or switch to another browser if you are running Windows 8 or Windows 8 Pro (sorry Windows RT users), you can also add support for any website that you want with a simple hack.

Microsoft uses a compatibility file to determine if Flash is turned on or off on a domain in Internet Explorer 10. All that needs to be done is to add domains to the list to add support for Flash. Let me show you how you do that:

1. Disable list updating. Internet Explorer is configured to check for compatibility list updates regularly. Doing so replaces the existing list with Microsoft’s updated list, which in turn deletes all changes that you have made to it. To avoid this, it is recommended to disable the automatic updating of the list.

1. Open the desktop version of Internet Explorer 10.
2. Press the Alt key to bring up the menu bar, and select Tools > Compatibility View Settings from the menu.
3. Locate the preference “Download updated compatibility lists from Microsoft” and uncheck it.
4. Close the menu and the browser when you are done.

2. Add or remove Flash support for domains. The file that you need to edit is located here: C:\Users\[USER_NAME]\AppData\Local\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\IECompatData\iecompatdata.xml

Replace [USER_NAME] with the name of the user who is signed in currently. I recommend opening the file in a plain text editor such as Notepad.

Locate in the document which marks the beginning of the domain list that Flash contents are enabled on.

To add domains to the list simply use the following syntax:

Append each entry to the whitelist, for instance right before the closing

Save the file when you are done.

3. Delete browsing history. It is necessary to delete the browsing history in the Start screen version of Internet Explorer 10 to complete the process.

2. Press Windows-I to open the settings
3. Select Internet Options > Delete browsing history

Closing Words

You can use the process outlined above to add Flash support to domains that are not whitelisted automatically by Microsoft when running the Modern UI version of Internet Explorer 10. You can furthermore remove Flash support for whitelisted domains as well, for instance to block Flash ads on a domain that you visit regularly. (via XDA Developers)

Adobe announced the discontinuation of Flash Player 3 years ago. The final update for Flash Player was released on 8th December 2020 and will only be supported until the end of December. On January 12th, 2021, all installations of Flash Player will be disabled and users will not be able to run any Flash app or game either in the browser or on a standalone Flash Player.

Many online games, applications, and video streaming services were dependent on the Flash Player and was their sole supported software. With the discontinuation, many vendors and platforms are worried that they might run out of business.

We are here to tell you that there is nothing to worry about. Let us show you how you can still play games and stream videos on websites embedded with Adobe Flash Player with an alternative.

What is Adobe Flash Player

Adobe Flash is a software that allows developers to create games, animations, and videos. Flash animation and interactive apps run in any browser that has a Flash Player plugin installed.

BlueMaxima Flashpoint Secure Player

At the beginning of 2018, a project was started to save the legacy of the internet and the loved games and videos that were believed to be extinct when the Adobe Flash Player was gone. Hence, a non-profit software was developed known as BlueMaxima’s Flashpoint with the sole purpose to preserve and support all that was on the internet that was only supporting Flash Player at the time.

Starting as a minor project, Flashpoint is now an international sensation setting out an example for the internet’s value and its legacy. It not only offers a single Flashpoint Secure Player but 2 different versions:

• Flashpoint Ultimate: It is an offline repository that already has everything pre-downloaded and ready to run. The download size is approximately 532GB when the package is extracted. Since it is already downloaded, an internet connection is not mandatory to run it.
• Flashpoint Infinity: The Infinity version function is the same as the Ultimate. However, the content is downloaded as the user is playing the game. The initial size of the package is approximately 2GB, which expands as more content is downloaded. This version offers more space but requires a live internet connection when playing for the first time. Moreover, the games may lag as well due to it being downloaded in real-time.

As opposed to these, the Adobe Flash Player was lighter in terms of size as it never had to download anything off the internet. However, since the times are changing and there is no replica of the Flash Player at the moment, BlueMaxima Flashpoint is the only thing closest to the functions of the Flash Player.

Since Flashpoint is a work in progress, it can take a couple of years to create a copy of everything on the internet that was dependent on Flash Player. In the meantime, users can request the creators of Flashpoint to include certain games, animations, and videos into the project so that they are accessible even after the depreciation of the Flash Player.

BlueMaxima has also created an automatic software update for Flashpoint Ultimate that regularly updates it to a newer version. However, the organization warns that each update will wipe out any metadata, so the users will be required to create a local backup if they wish to save it.

BlueMaxima also provides news posts to prompt its users of any recent additions or changes to the repository. This way, an enthusiastic gamer won’t miss out on any of the fun!

Download and install Flashpoint Secure Player

The main target of the project was the Windows platform. However, BlueMaxima’s Flashpoint now also supports other platforms such as Mac and Linux. Visit these pages for a guide to install them on the respective platforms.

Here are a few easy steps to download and install Flashpoint on a Windows PC:

1. Download your preferred version of Flashpoint from the links provided below, or visit their downloads page:

2. Extract the compressed package into another folder, and then execute the shortcut by the name “Start Flashpoint.”

Ruffle

Ruffle is an emulator and one of the better Flash Player alternatives, especially for the browsers. It is created in Rust programming language by volunteers and is an open-source project. The team welcomes more contributors as they are dedicated to preserving the Internet and its legacy. The plugin runs natively on a PC, just as the regular Flash Player does.

Download and install Ruffle Plugin

Since this plugin is not available on the Google Chrome store, it needs to be injected manually. Follow the methods below to install it on Google Chrome, Microsoft Edge, and Safari:

Supernova

Like Flash Player, Supernova is an extension that is readily available on the Google Chrome Store and can just as easily be installed on your web browser. It allows you to play Shockwave Flash (.swf) games designed to be played with Adobe Flash Player. Moreover, it also gives a standalone player that can be installed on your PC and run from any web browser.

You may install the plugin for Google Chrome by visiting this link and then click Add to Chrome. However, if you wish to run it from other browsers, you may visit the Supernova Player standalone page and download and install it directly.

The installation will then automatically add the extensions to your browser.

Closing words

While the Adobe Flash Player project is closing down due to the security vulnerabilities surfacing in the project, alternatives have emerged that can run Flash content without exposing the system to those vulnerabilities.

I especially like the Ruffle project, which is more of an exact Flash Player alternative, but I would prefer to use multiple utilities to make up for the dying Flash Player. Are you a fan of Flash content? What will you do after Flash Player goes extinct?

Adobe Flash is technically gone, with Adobe having stopped development on it on December 30, 2020. This means that none of the major browsers – Chrome, Edge, Safari, Firefox – support it any more. You can forget about Flash videos, Flash games, vintage Flash sites – the whole lot.

Why did this happen, and what do you do if you really need to access Flash content later? Is there any browser with Flash support still around, or at least a suitable alternative available? Let’s find out.

Why has Flash gone away?

Sunsetting Flash was largely a security-driven move. Flash was once the standard for videos, games, and other Web content, but it was terrifically vulnerable to exploits, thanks to the way it used memory and other issues. Another issue was its difficulty integrating with mobile technology due both to its tendency to suck power and its lack of support on both iOS and Android.

Keeping a piece of mostly-desktop software with more holes than a spaghetti strainer patched and somewhat safe was, as you can imagine, kind of a headache. Once other standards, like HTML5 and WebGL, became more functional and widely supported on both desktop and mobile, Flash’s days were numbered.

Will I still be able to access Flash content?

Since the start of 2021, accessing any remaining Flash content on the Web will still be possible, but it’ll take some work. Up-to-date browsers are no longer able to load Flash, but truly desperate Flash fans could use an older version of a browser, block it from auto-updating, and use it only for Flash content.

Of course, that comes with its own security issues, so do this at your own risk and take precautions like running it in a sandbox and only visiting sites you trust. Alternatively, there may still be a browser or two out there (Firefox/Chromium forks) that offers Flash support in some form, so finding that may also help.

Of course, with Flash effectively off the Web, sites that offer Flash-based content are now redundant. If there’s any Flash content you really want to save, you’ll need to use an old version of a browser that still supports Flash, download the Flash file (SWF) and use a desktop Flash player (like SWF File Player) to open it.

This approach could be time-consuming and technical if you’re trying to save all of your favorite content, though.

The best option you’ll probably find for accessing this stuff is Flashpoint, an ongoing project to archive and distribute the Web’s Flash content.

Thousands of games and animations have now been catalogued and are available for you to download and play as you like, so chances are good that you won’t even need to go manually back up the game you were afraid would disappear. If something isn’t on their list of content, you can always contribute to the community and add it yourself.

A Flash in the Pan

A lot of Flash-based content has either already been updated to use a modern standard like HTML5, WebGL, or Unity. If it hasn’t been updated, it’s ceased to be usable. There are workarounds to access your favorite Flash content (the best of which is Flashpoint), but for the most part, the world has now moved on.

I have disabled Active X filtering, made sure the add-on is enabled, I reset the advanced options, I tried disabling GPU rendering. I have tried every option that I’ve been able to find on any and all support sites and still it says that I do not have Adobe Flash installed.

Where the video window should be it says, “

To view this content, you need the latest version of Adobe Flash Player”

It was my understanding that IE 11 was supposed to have this built in? There are thousands of people with this issue and no one is getting a solution.

Yes, Internet Explorer is designed to provide an add-on free experience, and will play HTML5 and many Adobe Flash videos without needing to install a separate add-on. But, sometimes, we may have top check for the latest updates released at Adobe website just to be in touch with the latest versions.

1) Is this issue specific for a particular website?

2) Which version of Internet Explorer are you using? Is it the Modern or the Desktop version of Internet Explorer?

This error code could happen due to corrupt system files related to Internet Explorer. Before proceeding further, I would suggest you to check for the updates offered from Windows Update.

Let’s turn off and turn on Internet Explorer and check if it resolves the issue:

a. Press “Windows key +W”.

b. Type “Turn Windows features on or off” in the search box.

c. Select “Turn Windows feature on or off” option from the left panel.

d. Uncheck “Internet Explorer 11” option from the list and click “Ok”.

e. Restart the computer.

f. Open “Turn windows features on or off” then check the box next to “Internet Explorer 11” option to install it.

I am having the same problem. Windows 7 and IE11. Auto updates on.

Last week sometime, Flash videos on some sites were not playing. Just a place holder that says I need to download Flash Player. I uninstalled and reinstalled Flash several times. Still couldn’t play. In fact, no Flash video on Yahoo.com would play.

Many people are having the same problem. Several solutions from other forums that I tried:

1) try other browsers. Other browsers worked fine. Could continue to do this.

2) uninstall update KB2898785; I’m unclear if this had any effect

3) turn on compatibility view, with Microsoft suggested sites. This worked! Flash videos did play on Yahoo.com. But the main Yahoo.com scroll bar didn’t work and many of the other pages (like Yahoo Finance home page) did not display correctly. just a like of commands on the left side with no content

4) uninstall IE11 and go back to IE10. This worked! Yahoo.com, flash videos and Yahoo Finance all worked normally.

There is definitely and issue with Windows 7, IE11 and Flash that started in early December with some update. I’d like to get back to IE11, but Flash not working properly is a killer.

The Manifesto

Flash Player is dead. Its time has passed. It’s buggy. It crashes a lot. It requires constant security updates. It doesn’t work on most mobile devices. It’s a fossil, left over from the era of closed standards and unilateral corporate control of web technology. Websites that rely on Flash present a completely inconsistent (and often unusable) experience for fast-growing percentage of the users who don’t use a desktop browser. It introduces some scary security and privacy issues by way of Flash cookies.

Flash makes the web less accessible. At this point, it’s holding back the web.

Our goal: To get the world to uninstall the Flash Player plugin from their desktop browsers.

Why, you ask? Why does it matter, when Adobe has already neutered the platform by publicly killing Flash on mobile devices? Why does it matter when HTML5 has clearly won the fight for the future of our web browsing? Well, as we’ve seen with other outdated web technologies (most notably the much-lamented Internet Explorer 6), as long as software is installed on machines, there will be a contingent of decision makers who mandate its use, and there will be a requirement of continued support, the plugin will live on, and folks will continue to develop for it. Also, for unknown reasons, Adobe is still sticking with Flash as a desktop browsing technology.

The only way to truly force the web to embrace modern open standards is to invalidate old technology.

Now let’s be clear: Disabling Flash Player in your browser will likely mean that some of the sites you use regularly are less usable (We’re looking at you, Google Analytics. For shame!). Should you choose to join the movement, there will be some pain and sacrifice involved in your decision. But the more of us who run browsers that don’t support Flash, the quicker that pain will subside.

Note: This is not a campaign against Adobe, or even their Flash platform. We’re sure there are plenty of good uses for it, such as building great Air applications, for example. In fact, Adobe has stated they believe HTML5 is the future of web browsing. We’re simply trying to help them get there a little faster (Sidenote: Adobe, if you’re reading this, how about manning-up and supporting this site, like Microsoft did with the IE6 Funeral)

Whenever you use the Internet, your browser uses small applications called plug-ins to display certain types of content. Although Flash Player has long been one of the most well-known plug-ins, it has become much less popular in recent years.

There are a few reasons for this decline in popularity. Because Flash Player is a relatively old plug-in, it has become increasingly vulnerable to online threats like viruses and hackers. Most web browsers have even started disabling Flash Player content by default for security reasons.

Also, because Flash Player was designed for desktop computers, it’s not very good at displaying content on mobile devices, including smartphones and tablets. Some mobile browsers, including Safari for iOS, can’t even use Flash Player.

Should I stop using it?

Although you don’t need to completely stop using Flash Player, you should use caution. Most browsers have an Ask to Activate or Ask First setting for Flash, which we recommend using. This keeps Flash disabled most of the time, but it gives you the option to temporarily enable it when you’re on a site that you know and trust.

Keeping Flash Player up to date

Because older versions of Flash are vulnerable to online threats, you’ll want to make sure you’re always using the most recent version. If you’re not running the most recent version, you might see an error message instead of your content.

However, we don’t recommend updating the plug-in directly from a warning message like this. Some misleading advertisements are cleverly disguised as warning messages, but they won’t actually take you to an update page. That’s why it’s best to download the update directly from the Adobe website.

It’s also worth pointing out that some browsers update all of your plug-ins automatically, including Flash Player. If you’re using a browser like Internet Explorer, you’ll probably need to update your plug-ins manually.
