How to use a gif as an apple watch wallpaper
The Apple Watch is undoubtedly one of the smartwatches available and includes a variety of ways to personalize it, from watch bands and even the watch faces. The Apple Watch already has a plethora of top-notch watch faces available, but you can also use your own images and make it as a wallpaper.
What’s more, you can also use Live Photos as tappable moving wallpapers on the Apple Watch. While you can take Live Photos from the Camera, you can use an existing GIF and convert it to a Live Photo to use on the Apple Watch.
Just follow these steps:
Download the GIPHY app and look for a GIF that you would want to use as a wallpaper.
Save the image but remember to select ‘Convert to Live Photo’.
The GIF should now be saved in Photos as a Live Photo.
Now open the Watch app and select the Face Gallery tab in the bottom.
Scroll down and look for the Photos watch face and select the image you’ve saved.
You can make the Live Photo move on your Apple Watch by hard-pressing on the screen.

A wallpaper is a great way to spruce up your Apple Watch. But what’s better than a still image? How about your favorite GIF that comes alive every time you lift your wrist?
If you’re a regular Apple Watch user, you might be aware of the Photos watch face, which allows you to cycle between up to 24 photos. And if you use a Live Photo, it actually animates every time you use your Apple Watch.
Combine this with the fact that you can convert any GIF into a Live Photo, and you’ve now got an amazing selection of media to use as your Apple Watch wallpaper. And yes, you can do this for your iPhone wallpaper as well.
The process is quite simple. Use an app like GIPHY to search for a GIF, convert it to a Live Photo, and then use the Watch app to add that photo to your watch face. Here’s how it works.
First, download and open the GIPHY app. Next, tap on the “Search” bar to search for a GIF. You can also explore GIFs based on categories, hashtags, and trending searches.
When you find a GIF that you like, tap on it to view it.
Here, tap on the “Menu” button.
Now tap on the “Convert to Live Photo” option.
The app will ask you if you want to save the GIF in a full-screen format or if you want it to fit to the screen (of your iPhone). If the GIF is in widescreen format, choose the “Fit to Screen” option. It would be best if you find a GIF that’s in square format. You can also crop the Live Photo in a step below.
Now the Live Photo will be saved to your Camera Roll. We’ll need to get it ready for the Apple Watch.
Open the Live Photo and tap on the “Edit” button.
First, you might want to switch to the “Crop” option to resize the GIF to be a perfect square.
When you’re in the crop view, tap on the “Aspect Ratio” button from the top toolbar (in iOS 13 and above).
Then choose the “Square” option from below.
Next, tap on the “Live” button from the bottom toolbar.
Tap on the last frame and then select “Make Key Photo.” This ensures that, once the animation is over, the wallpaper becomes the last frame instead of jumping to a frame in the middle of the GIF.
Now, you should trim down the Live Photo to around one second of footage. If you use a GIF without editing the length, it might not work. Only Live Photos less than 42 frames work as animated wallpapers on the Apple Watch.
Grab the two handles and reduce the Live Photo length by about half. After, tap on the “Done” button to save the Live Photo. Now we’re ready to move on to the next step.
Open the Watch app and go to the “Face Gallery” section.
Here, swipe down until you see the “Photos” watch face. Tap on it.
From this screen, go to the “Content” section and tap on “Photos.” This will allow you to choose a specific photo (or photos) for the watch face.
From the photo picker, select the Live Photo we just edited and then tap on the “Done” button.
Now from the watch face page, tap on the “Add” button.
The new Photos watch face will be added at the end of the watch faces list on your Apple Watch. Just lift up your wrist, and you should now see the GIF animation as your Apple Watch comes alive.
If you’re seeing only a static image or a black screen, this means your GIF is still too long. Go back to the editing screen and trim down the GIF. After you do that, it should work fine.

While looking for some new and interesting wallpapers for my Apple Watch, I came across a Reddit post showing Apple Watch wallpaper that had been created from a GIF — and I simply had to create some of my own. Mostly because a) Apple’s default time lapse wallpapers felt a bit boring, and b) Live Photos I shoot with my phone aren’t as interesting as some of the glitch art you can find online.
The process is very simple — you’re basically converting a GIF into a Live Photo. It does take a few steps to get it to work just right. Bear with me, though. I promise it’s worth it.
- Go to the Apple Store and download an app that lets you turn GIFs into Live Photos. You can use a popular app like Giphy which not only has a lot of GIFs available, but now has a built-in option to save its GIFs as Live Photos. You can, of course, also use your favorite GIF app.
- Find a GIF or a Live Photo you want to use as your Apple Watch wallpaper and save it to your Photos app.
- Once you save the photo, go to your Photos library, select your newly saved Live Photo, and hit “Edit” in the top right corner.
- Make the last frame of the Live Photo your key photo.
Select your saved photo and hit Edit.
Make the last frame your key photo.
- Go to the Watch app on your iPhone in order to create a new watchface based on a photo.
- Select the second tab named “Face Gallery,” then scroll down until you reach the Photos section. Under “Content” select “Photos.” That will enable you to pick a specific photo instead of a whole album. Pick your desired Live Photo there.
- Lastly, add the watchface to your watch and test it out.
Use the Watch app to create a new watchface.
Add your photo to the watchface.
Note that if the animation isn’t working properly, it probably means that the animation is too long. In that case you can easily trim it using your favorite editing app.
Also, be aware that some GIFs will work better than the others. For example, as I played around with it, I found that Live Photos that have 42 frames, and GIFs with a lot more movement, like fireworks or lightning, all worked better for me.
And that’s it. Enjoy!

Wouldn’t it be great if you could take that awesome (and hilarious!) GIF, and use it as an animated wallpaper for your iPhone? You could wake your iPhone, press on the screen, and watch the action unfold. Over and over. And over.
Sadly, GIF wallpapers are impossible. Or are they? Well, you can’t set an actual GIF to run as your lock-screen wallpaper, but you can convert any GIF into a Live Photo, and use that to animate your iPhone’s lock screen.
Convert any GIF to a Live Photo
There are two steps to making GIF wallpaper for your iPhone:
- Convert your GIF to Live Photo.
- Tell your iPhone to use that Live Photo as wallpaper.
When you’ve done this, the Live Photo can be animated, or played, by pressing and holding a finger on the lock screen. It won’t play on your regular home screen, so you might consider using a different image there.
We have a whole tutorial on using Live Photos for your lock-screen wallpaper, so that’s the place to go if you aren’t interested in the GIF part.
1. Convert your GIF to Live Photo
For this step, you need the Giphy app. This lets you search for any GIF, convert it to a live photo, and save it to your camera roll. It does a lot more than that, but today we’re going to get in and out fast, using this one feature.
So, step one is to brace yourself, and step two is to open the app. Unless you’re under 25 years old, you will immediately want to close it again, thanks to the flashing GIFs running simultaneously, all over the damn place. Just hold on, and try to focus. Breathe. If you make it through the first few seconds without a seizure, you’re good to continue.
The easiest way to proceed is to use Giphy’s search to find the GIF you want. It is possible to open GIFs from your photo library (via the camera icon in the Giphy app), but you can only view your camera roll. This means that you have to scroll through all your photos to find the GIF you want. Seeing as Giphy has pretty much every GIF ever created, just search there instead.
Then, when you find an animation you like, tap to view it, then tap the three-dot icon to share it. In the resulting list, tap Convert to Live Photo. Choose full-screen, or fit-to-screen, and you’re done. It’s now in your photo library.
How to use a Live Photo as wallpaper
This part is covered in our dedicated how-to, but here are the main points:
- A live photo can’t be assigned as wallpaper from inside the Photos app (you can set regular photos as wallpaer from Photos’ share sheet, so this is an odd anomaly).
- Open Settings > Wallpaper > Choose a New Wallpaper, browse to your newly-saved Live Photo, and then choose the option to display it as a Live Photo (see image above).
- Set it to show on the lock screen only, because it can’t animate on the home screen. It’ll just show up as a still image.
You’re done. Now, whenever you’re on the lock screen, you can press and hold to run the “GIF.” Such fun.
One of the key benefits of having a Windows operating system is that you can use Animated GIFs as wallpaper. On Techviral, we have already shared a step-by-step guide on how to use Animated GIF as desktop wallpaper on Windows 10. However, what if you prefer to use macOS instead of Windows 10?
Well, macOS doesn’t support GIF wallpapers out of the box, but there’s a way to set an animated wallpaper. For that, you need to use a third-party app known as ‘GIFPaper’. It’s an application that lets you set Animated GIF wallpaper on your Mac screen.
Steps Use an Animated GIF as the Wallpaper om Mac
So, if you are a Mac user and looking for ways to set Animated GIF as a wallpaper, you are reading the right article. In this article, we will share a detailed guide on how to use an Animated GIF as the Wallpaper on Mac. Let’s check out.
Step 1. First of all, head to this Github page and select Code > Download ZIP.
Step 2. Once downloaded, unzip the zip file. Now inside the folder, launch the ‘GIFPaperPrefs.prefPane’ file.
Step 3. After launching the app, you will get the prompt asking whether you wish to install the app for yourself or all the users on the machine. Just choose any and click on ‘Install.’
Step 4. Once installed, you will find the app on the Preferences panel instead of the Application folder.
Step 5. Now double click on the GIFPaper to launch the app. If you encounter a warning message, select the Security & Privacy pane and click on ‘Open Anyway.’
That’s it! This is how you can download & install GIFPaper on macOS. After the installation, follow the steps given below to set an animated GIF as a macOS wallpaper.
How to Create Animated GIF Wallpaper with GIFPaperPrefs?
After launching the app from the Preferences Panel, you would see an interface like below.
You need to click on the ‘Browse’ button and then select the GIF that you want to use as your desktop wallpaper. Once selected, you need to adjust the alignment and scaling. If your GIF doesn’t have the appropriate height and width, you can fill the background color as well.
Once done, check your Mac desktop. The GIF wallpaper would be set as wallpaper.
How to Add GIFPaper to the Startup Item List?
The problem with the GIFPaper is that it doesn’t work at the startup. That means that you will lose the GIF wallpaper every time you reboot your Mac. To fix this problem, you need to add GIFPaper to the Startup item list on Mac. Follow the steps given below to add GIFPaper to the Startup item list.
- Click on the Apple Logo in the menu bar. Next, head to the System Preferences > User & Groups.
- On the left pane, select your account.
- Select the ‘Login items’ tab. Next, click on the (+) icon and select the unzipped GIFPaper folder.
- Next, select ‘GIFPaperAgent’ and then click on the ‘Add‘ button.
That’s it! You are done. Now Mac will automatically launch and restore the GIFPaper’s animated wallpaper during the startup.
So, this article is all about how to use an Animated GIF wallpaper on Mac. I hope this article helped you! Please share it with your friends also. If you have any doubts about this, let us know in the comment box below.
Did you know that you can set a GIF as your iPhone or iPad wallpaper that animates with a press? Sure, Apple doesn’t make it possible for you to use them as they are, but you can make use of a workaround to enjoy your favorite animated GIF right on your iPhone lock screen.
The workaround that we’re about to discuss here involves a feature that has been available on iPhones and iPads for years now. We’re talking about Live Photos, and some of you may already know how Apple allows you to set Live Photos as wallpapers that animate on the lock screen. The only change here is that we’ll be using a GIF instead of an actual Live Photo. But first, you’ll have to do a little conversion before you can set the GIF as a wallpaper.
How to Set a GIF as Wallpaper on iPhone & iPad
We’ll be making use of a free third-party app to convert your GIF to a Live Photo first before you proceed to set it as the wallpaper. So, let’s check out the necessary steps:
- Go to the App Store and install GIF Convert by PicCollage on your iPhone or iPad. Open the app to get started.
Next, you need to select the GIF from your photo library.
Here, you’ll be able to trim the GIF if needed. Tap on the download icon at the bottom-right corner to proceed with the conversion.
Now, select “Live Photo” for the Save as type, set the Resolution to “High” for maximum quality, and then tap on “Save” to add the converted image to your library.
Head over to “Settings” from the home screen of your iPhone or iPad. Scroll down below and tap on “Wallpaper” to proceed.
Here, tap on the “Choose a New Wallpaper” option located right at the top.
Now, select the “Live Photos” album and choose the live photo that you just converted using the app.
Once selected, you’ll be able to preview your new live photo by simply long-pressing on it. Tap on “Set” to access more options.
You can set it either as your home screen wallpaper, lock screen wallpaper, or both. Choose your preferred option to complete the procedure.
That was the last step. You’ve successfully learned how to use GIFs as wallpapers on your iOS/iPadOS device, just make sure to convert them to Live Photos first.
One important thing to note here is that your new wallpaper will only animate in the lock screen, it will stay as a still image on the home screen. You’ll also need to long-press on the display for the wallpaper animation to play. Therefore, if you were expecting your GIF to loop automatically whenever you’re on the lock screen, we hate to break it to you that this is as close as you can get for now.
Some of you may have tried to set a GIF as your wallpaper directly from the wallpaper selection menu. Unfortunately, doing this will only set a still version of your GIF as the wallpaper and it doesn’t animate when you press on the screen. Only Live Photos do the animation thing and that’s exactly why it’s important to convert the GIF first. Similarly, you can set videos as wallpapers on your iPhone and iPad too.
Considering you went through all this just to personalize your device according to your liking, you may also be keen on learning how to automatically change your iPhone wallpaper with the Shortcuts app. You can select a bunch of your favorite photos and set your iPhone to switch between them on a timely basis.
This is obviously geared towards iPhone, but if you’re a Mac user you can gain a similar effect by using an animated GIF as a screen saver on the computer, except that on the Mac it will loop constantly.
Did you convert your GIFs to Live Photos for use as animated wallpapers?. What’s your take on this useful workaround? Do you wish iOS would just support animated GIFs directly as wallpaper? Do you know any other ways to set a GIF as the wallpaper? Share your knowledge and thoughts in the comments.
GIFs are Graphic Interchange Format files. These files are most widely-known as animated images used as comical anecdotes on social media. But, there are a lot of other uses too.
Having the same motionless wallpaper on your Mac can get pretty boring pretty fast. But did you know that you can liven up your screen and set an animated GIF as your wallpaper? In this article, we’ll show you exactly how to do it.
Setting Animated GIFs as Wallpaper on Your Mac Computer
Your computer’s operating system (macOS) doesn’t have the software that supports setting animated GIFs as wallpaper or screensaver.
However, that doesn’t mean that you can’t install additional programs that can help you. There are a bunch of programs you can find online for this, but most of them are either full of bugs or don’t work at all.
Luckily, we have found two programs that you can definitely rely on. These programs are also constantly getting updated, so users can enjoy more features almost every month. On top of that, they are completely free.
Let’s go through both of them and see what they’re all about.
Before We Begin
Since the following tutorials will show you how to download, install, and use these programs, make sure that you have already downloaded an animated GIF of your choosing.
You can search for your desired GIF on websites like GIPHY, Tenor, and similar. Once you’ve found the GIF that you like, right-click on it and choose Save As.
It is also a good idea to make your own animated GIFs. There are plenty of online tools that allow you to create animations just by adding your pictures. The Gif Maker is one of the tools you can use.
GIFPaper
GIFPaper is one of the first programs that allowed users to set animated GIFs as their wallpapers on Mac computers. In its initial versions, the GIFPaper software wasn’t exactly considered user-friendly. You needed to install and set up everything manually and it took quite some time.
On top of that, this program used to drain about 15% of the computer’s CPU power to display the animated GIF. You don’t need to be tech-savvy to know that 15% is too much.
However, the developers have fixed most of these issues, so the GIFPaper that we have now actually runs quite well.
We will start by showing you how to download and install this software.
NOTE: Keep in mind that animations always use more RAM and CPU power than other formats. Thus, no matter the program that you select, you will notice that your CPU is working overtime.
If your CPU isn’t that powerful and if you own an older Mac computer, you should avoid setting animations as wallpaper. The animations will most likely be laggy and you might end up damaging your CPU in the long run (although that’s quite hard).
Downloading, Installing, and Using GIFPaper
GIFPaper doesn’t have an official website. Therefore, the download link that we’ll provide you in this article will be from a third-party website. Although downloading anything from a third-party website isn’t recommended for safety reasons, this link has our green light. If that link stops working, you can check its alternative.
Click on the link and download GIFPaper. Here’s what you need to do to install and use this software:
- Double-click on the installation file named GIFPaperPrefs.
- A popup window will appear asking you whether you want to install the GifPaperPrefs preferences pane. Select the option that you want (Install for this user only or Install for all users of this computer) and click on Install. The installation will be done in a few seconds.
- Open the installed GIFPaperPrefs program.
- Select Browse from its initial screen and select the GIF that you want to set.
- Once you’ve selected your GIF, you can adjust its alignment, scaling, and background color.
- Run the second file from the folder where you’ve downloaded GIFPaper. It is called GIFPaperAgent.
- Select Open, and your animated GIF wallpaper should be set.
AnimatedGIF
AnimatedGIF is a program developed for Mac OSX/macOS that allows users to play animated GIFs. Initially, this program worked as a screensaver. With its latest updates, AnimatedGIF can set animated GIF backgrounds on your Mac computer. The software is now quite stable and doesn’t use as much RAM or CPU, but you should still be careful as it varies from computer to computer.
First, you need to download AnimatedGIF. You can download the program from here.
As you can see, the program is posted on GitHub where you can even see its source code. To download AnimatedGIF, click on the release that you want. It is advised that you always choose the latest release (release 1.5.3 in this case) as it has all of the latest updates.
Scroll down to the Assets section and download both AnimatedGif.saver and Uninstall_AnimatedGif.app zip files. You can download the source code as well if you’d like, but it isn’t necessary.
Here’s how you can install and use AnimatedGIF on your Mac computer:
- Unzip the downloaded files.
- Double-click on the AnimatedGIF.saver file. macOS will then ask you if you want to install this program. Click on Install.
- Go to System Preferences.
- Select Desktop and Screensaver.
- From there, select AnimatedGIF Screensaver.
- Click on its Screen Saver Options.
- Select the GIF that you want to use. You will also be able to adjust a decent amount of settings from that window.
Customize Your Mac Computer Wallpaper
GIFPaper and AnimatedGIF both allow you to customize your Mac’s wallpaper by setting animated GIFs rather than motionless background images. You now know what you need to do to install and use these programs. Choose the program that you find easier to use and have fun with it.
It is worth pointing out again that GIFs and other animations use more CPU power and RAM, so your computer could run slower.
Which of these two programs will you go for? Do you already have a perfect GIF in mind for your new wallpaper? Let us know in the comments below.
