If you’re having seconds thoughts about jailbreaking your iOS device, here’s how to easily unjailbreak it and go back to normalcy.
To unjailbreak, many how-to guides say that you need to put your iOS device in recovery or DFU mode, but that’s actually not the case at all. In fact, it’s a lot easier than that–you just need to erase your device, then restore it from a backup. The backup won’t include the jailbreak or jailbroken apps, so you’ll be back to stock iOS.
To start, you’ll first want to plug your device into your computer and fire up iTunes. Then click on the device icon in the upper-left corner to open up the device summary screen.
Make sure iTunes has all the movies and music you want on your device, since we’ll be erasing it shortly. Once you’ve done so, it’s time to back up your device’s apps and settings.
To back up your device, click on “Back Up Now”.
After that process is finished, open up the Settings app on your device, and navigate to iCloud > Find My iPhone. From there, disable Find My iPhone. You’ll only do this temporarily, as Apple requires this feature to be disabled when restoring your device.
Next, go back to iTunes and click on “Restore iPhone”.
You may receive a pop-up window asking if you want to back up your stuff, but since you already did this, just click on “Don’t Back Up”.
Click “Restore” when the next pop-up window appears.
The process will begin and will take around five minutes or so.
Eventually, you’ll see the below screen in iTunes when the process is complete. You can either select “Set up as new iPhone if you want to start from scratch, or select “Restore from this backup” to get back all of your apps, settings, contacts, etc.
Restoring a backup to an iOS device takes a few minutes, and when iTunes says that it’s done restoring the backup and your iPhone or iPad completely reboots, you can unlock it. From there, you’ll see the iOS Setup Assistant start screen. Swipe to the right to continue and go through the steps to set up your iPhone again. You’ll set up things like Location Services, Touch ID, Apple Pay, and iCloud.
Once you complete the setup process and reach the home screen, you’ll notice that you might have some apps that are darkened out with “Waiting…” underneath these app icons. This means that these apps are downloading to your device and are being installed, so sit back and relax while this happens, as it can take a while.
Once that’s done, though, your iPhone or iPad will be completely ready to use again and you’ll be free of the jailbreak.
It is now possible to unjailbreak your iPhone, iPod Touch or iPad, without having to restore or update its firmware. All thanks to the newly released Cydia Impactor tool from Saurik.
If for some reason, you want to unjailbreak your iOS device, but would like to retain the ability to re-jailbreak, simply use Cydia Impactor.
The tool is currently in beta and works only on iOS 8.3 and iOS 8.4. If you’re jailbroken on an older firmware, then you must simply update to iOS 8.4 and jailbreak using TaiG.
Using Cydia Impactor to unjailbreak your iOS device is very easy. However, the unjailbreak process will erase all data on your iPhone, iPod Touch or iPad, so make sure you’ve backed up your device.
Also, it is important that your device is connected to WiFi and has more than 50 percent of charge.
Here’s how to unjailbreak your iPhone, iPod Touch or iPad using Cydia Impactor:
- Download and install Cydia Impactor from Cydia.
- Launch Cydia Impactor and tap on the delete all data and unjailbreak device button.
- Wait for the process to finish, it’s going to take a while.
- Once completed, your iOS device will reboot and you have to go through the activation/setup process again.
- Good news is, you’re still on the firmware that you were on before unjailbreaking.
That’s pretty much it. No more restoring or updating firmware and losing the ability to jailbreak.
What do you think of this unjailbreak tool?

If you need to undo your jailbreak, follow these simple steps to restore your iDevice to its original (jailed) state.
Jailbreaking isn’t for everyone. Cydia is quick to overwhelm even the tech-savvy user, and upgrading iOS software on a jailbroken device can be a headache-inducing process.
Whether you’ve discovered that jailbreaking isn’t for you, or you need to take your iDevice to the Genius Bar for repair, you’ll need to unjailbreak your device.
There are plenty of forums, blog posts, and YouTube videos that attempt to guide you through this process. Many are outdated, and, in some cases, incorrect.
So, to find the proper way to unjailbreak an iDevice, I went to the source. Nikias Bassen, a developer for the Chronic-Dev team, the folks behind the Absinthe jailbreak and greenpois0n.com, offered this simple solution:
- Back up your iDevice. Sync it with iTunes or iCloud to make sure you have a back up of your phone’s current state. Whether you’re using iTunes or iCloud, make sure you tweak the sync settings so that everything you need is backed up. With iCloud, you can force a backup by going to Settings > iCloud > Storage and Backup > Back Up Now.
- Restore. When the backup is complete and your device is connected to iTunes, select it from the sidebar. Then, in the Summary tab, click “Restore.” Now iTunes will restore your iPhone, iPad, or iPod to factory settings and completely wipe the device.
- Recover your backup. Now your device will display guide you through activation. Once you pass the Wi-Fi setup screen, you’ll be asked how you’d like to set up your device. If you did an iCloud backup, select that option. Otherwise, go to iTunes and restore it from the backup you created in the first step.
In a few minutes, your device will restart, and your apps, settings, and other data (like contacts) will be restored. Cydia is gone, and when you take your iDevice to the Genius Bar, there will be no obvious traces that you once broke your gadget out of jail.
