It’s easy for set-top boxes to get loaded with dozens of streaming media apps. If you’re not using an app or game anymore, it’s a good idea to uninstall it to free up some storage space and potentially improve device performance. Here’s how to uninstall apps on Android TV.
First, use the D-pad on your Android TV’s remote to select the “Apps” icon on the left side of the top home screen row.

However, in this guide, we will show you how to install apps and games on your Google TV.
How to Install Apps and Games on Google TV
If you use a Google Chromecast with Google TV, then you are able to access Android apps made for TVs. The issue, however, is you can’t open the Google Play Store directly and install apps as Android TV users can. To search for apps on your Chromecast, you need to use the store’s search functionality in the Apps tab on the Home screen. Follow the steps below to begin installing apps on your Google TV device.
- First off, click the Apps tab on the Home screen of your Google TV.
- Now you should see categories you can explore under the Apps tab. When you click a category, you will see a list of apps or games depending on the category.

You can also find a couple of other rows in the tab with “Featured” app and game recommendations. These recommendations are shared in groups.

If you see any app you want to install, simply click it and click the “Install” button on the information page. The service also allows you to check screenshots of the app below the “Install” button.

So that’s it for how to install an app. However, what if you have a specific app you would like to download? Well, the solution to this is simply searching for the app or game. To do this, follow the steps below.
- First off, go to the “App Categories” row.

Once the information page of the app opens, click the “Install” button to install the app on your Google TV.

After the app has been installed on your TV, click the “Open” button to launch it without having to back to the Home screen. All the apps you have installed will be displayed at the end of the Apps row on the Home screen. If the apps you installed are more than 12, you will have to click “See All” to be able to view all the apps.
To get the most out of your Google TV streaming device, you’ll want to find and download some apps and games. Unfortunately, doing this on devices like the Chromecast with Google TV isn’t as easy as opening the Play Store, but we’ll walk you through it.
Devices like the Chromecast with Google TV have access to Android apps made for televisions. However, you can’t actually open the Google Play Store directly, like you can with Android TV. Instead, the store’s search functionality is built into the “Apps” tab on the Home screen.

This opens an on-screen keyboard, so you can enter the name of the item. Select the Search icon when you’re done. If your remote has a Google Assistant button, you can use that to perform a voice search.
If there are Google TV apps that match your search terms, you’ll see a list of results. Select the app or game you’re looking for.
Select “Install” on the information page. Again, you can view screenshots of that item under the “Install” button.
Once the app is installed, select “Open” to launch it directly from the Play Store listing. You’ll find any apps or games you’ve just installed at the end of the Apps row on the Home screen. If you have more than 12, you’ll have to select “See All” to view the entire list.
It’s a bit strange that Google doesn’t allow you to simply open the Play Store on its own set-top boxes, dongles, and televisions, but the “Apps” tab is just as good for browsing. And, of course, you can always find anything you’re looking for with the Search feature.
