Stardew Valley, the smash hit indie farming simulation role-playing game, is the kind of game players get quite attached to after sinking a lot of time into their farms, their relationships with the characters, and building their skills. Let’s look at how to safely backup your game so your farm is always safe.

Before we dive into the specifics of manually backing up your game, let’s highlight a key point about how Stardew Valley saves your game. Stardew Valley does not use an incremental save system like, say, Skyrim. It has a one-and-done save slot like an old school Nintendo game. Every single time you go to bed in the game, your old game save slot is overwritten with the new game save. If that single save is deleted, corrupted, or otherwise rendered unplayable, you’re just out of luck.

With that in mind, there are three kinds of game save backups a Stardew Valley player should worry about, depending on their needs and play style:

• a backup of their current game so they don’t lose their progress in the event of a computer problem
• incremental backups of their game if they would like to “snapshot” their progress to potentially return to a past point
• a backup before modifying game files or introducing game mods to ensure a bad mod job doesn’t torch their farm.

Even if you don’t want a chance to roll back the clock or play with mods, having a backup of your game is important so you don’t lose all your progress. Stardew Valley is the kind of game you invest significant time into—it takes roughly 26 hours of real-world time to advance through the first in-year game.

Note: If you purchased the game through Steam (and have not manually disabled Steam Cloud file saving) then every time you exit the game while your computer is online, a new copy of the save game is uploaded to the Steam servers. Players who purchased the game from outside of Steam and are playing it without activating it on Steam—or Steam players who simply wish to have multiple backups—need to manually backup their game saves.

To manually backup your Stardew Valley game save, you first need to locate the game save directory on your computer. Regardless of your operating system, all Stardew Valley game saves take the same sturcture: a folder with some XML files inside (and, in fact, you can transfer your game saves between different operating systems with no issue). That game save folder is located at the following places in different operating systems:

• Windows: C: \Users\[USERNAME]\AppData\Roaming\StardewValley\Saves
• macOS: /Users/[USERNAME]/.config/StardewValley/Saves
• Linux:

Windows users can jump right to the folder by pasting %AppData%\StardewValley\Saves\ into the Run box and hitting enter. Inside the folder you will find one sub folder for each of your Stardew Valley characters (if you only have one character there will only be one folder). Each character’s folder is named something like Charactername_XXXXXXXXX . While the Xs are a seemingly random number, they actually represent the time, in seconds, after the game’s release date on June 22 2012 that the character was created).

Just back that entire folder up however you wish—copy it to a flash drive for safe keeping, schedule regular incremental backups with your favorite backup app, etc.—and you’ll always have not only a backup copy to fall back on but, if you backup regularly, “revisions” of your game you can return to.

In addition to backing things up for safe keeping, you can also take advantage of an undocumented trick. If you make a copy of a character’s save folder using a slightly different name—but leaving it in the same directory—then in game, you’ll see multiple saves (just with differing amount of time played). In the screenshot below, we have our main game save as well as a copy of our main game save made at a point in the past.

When we load the actual game and open the save selection screen, you’ll see there are two copies of the game with two different progress points listed (as evidenced by both the hours played on each game save as well as which day of which in-game year we’re on).

While most people simply play their game straight through, this trick allows you to create a fall back point, or even play dual timelines where the timeline diverges for your character at a critical point in the game.

Regardless of your motivation for backing up your game save, as long as you do so, your masterful work-in-progress farm will always be safe—come modding disaster or hard drive failure.

On mobile, Stardew Valley’s save method is based upon the system used for computers, but with some additions to make it more suited to mobile devices.

The game creates a folder on the device for each saved game. In that folder, there are three different kinds of save files which can appear – Standard Saves, Emergency Saves and Backup saves.

Standard Saves

Standard Saves are the same format found on the PC version of the game. The PC version only allows saving when going to sleep, so standard saves retain this system. A standard save always starts at 6am in the morning when loaded. These saves are compatible with PC, and can be transferred back and forth.

When a standard save happens, the mobile version (like PC) keeps your previous standard save, using the suffix ‘_old’. Occasionally, save files might encounter problems. If this happens, players can swap between the most recent standard save and the previous backup by pressing the ‘Swap to previous save’ button on the Options page.

Emergency Saves

Unlike a PC, a mobile device can sometimes interrupt the game – for example, if a phone call happens mid-game. Also, players may change to another app, and want to resume where they left off in the game later on. When the app is no longer shown on the screen, it is classed as being a ‘background’ app. If the phone or tablet is running low on resources, it might automatically unload any background apps, losing any unsaved progress.

If the game moves into the background, and then resumed, if the app hasn’t been unloaded by the phone/tablet, it will continue where it left off. If the game has been unloaded, however, the game will be reloaded, and will then need to load a save in order to carry on where it left off. To allow this, the game does an ‘emergency save’ when it goes into the background (for example, when you press the home button on an iPhone). Because of the complexity of Stardew Valley, this save takes a few seconds. If you ‘kill’ the app before this save is completed (by swiping it away from the list of background apps), the game will not complete its emergency save.

Note: If the game time is less than 6:20am, no emergency saves are created because the standard 6am save is assumed to be sufficient.

When the game loads up, it checks to see if there’s a file called EMERGENCY_SAVE present. If there is, it looks in that file to find the location of the most recent emergency save. If it finds one, the player is asked “Would you like to restore from where you previously left off?” when the main menu loads, allowing the player to load the emergency save.

The game does not delete emergency saves once they’ve been loaded. Instead, the emergency saves will be deleted only when the game saves either a standard or backup save. Only one emergency save exists per device (i.e., the emergency save is not associated with a specific game ID / character).

Backup Saves

At any time (other than during certain festivals, cutscenes and other events), players can manually save the game with the ‘Save Backup’ button on the options page. This saves progress as a backup file, using the same format as an emergency save, except associated with a specific game ID. The game time in a backup save is always the start of the next ten-minute interval.

When selecting a game to load, if a backup file exists the player is asked “Would you like to restore from where you previously left off?”. Selecting “Yes” causes the backup file to be loaded; selecting “No” loads the standard 6am save.

Only one backup save can exist per game ID; a new backup save overwrites any previous backup for that game ID. Backup saves are automatically deleted when a new standard save is created for the game ID (i.e., overnight, after any level up dialogs and shipping reports). They are not deleted, however, when an emergency save is created.

In order to maintain compatibility with the computer version, the game needs to keep the standard save to be the 6am morning save. But, the computer version isn’t compatible with the concept of loading/saving anywhere/any time, so that’s why these multiple systems are supported.

Some game details are not stored in Backup Saves or Emergency Saves, leading to slight differences in game play after reloading from one of these saves. Known differences include:

I recently bought Stardew Valley for my android device and i was wondering if there is a way to continue my progress from my pc game on my phone and then continue playing the same save file back on my pc.

If you’re saying this in a broad term that includes consoles, I can tell you that’s not gonna be feasible.

Console companies do not allow you to access your save games from outside the game (Switch / Xbox), or are encrypted (PS4). This makes it where the save files can only exists within the console and their cloud system (Switch / Xbox), or is completely unreadable when transferred to another platform (PS4). The reason they do this for a number of reasons, but the top one being security.

Yeah, cross-platform saves are very tough to implement. I’m pretty sure that would require Stardew to start using user accounts and have server backend which simply may not be feasible with the current dev team’s size.

It would be nice to see Stardew take advantage of existing platform features for saves like iCloud so it syncs progress between any iOS devices you have, stuff like that. I know Stardew already does this on Steam.

Nah. Fortnite is able to play same account on Switch/PS/Xbox/PC/MAC, and there are others too. So it is possible.

I think issues would be:

1. Players using Mods or people modifying saves would have to to choose local save only.
2. Players who want to Sync have to give up Modding, and in some fashion “Acknowledge” their save can only be played on systems using the same version of the game.

In regards to gameplay and content, you cannot co-op on Mobile, otherwise, you’re pretty much playing the same game. Also to note down, the controls on mobile is much different than if you were to play with a keyboard and mouse, or console (controller), or handheld (switch).

The only huge difference between PC and other ports is the ability to install and use mods, and controls between keyboard/mouse, controller, or touchscreen.

I tried the game when it launched on iOS before, but I immediately went for a refund because the touchscreen was really weird, compared to console or pc, not to mention, it flat out taken over a big chunk of my screen space, as well as draining my phone battery, so I decided to stick with my PC/PS4 version of the game. This may be different if you’re playing on a tablet, or with a controller for your device, so if you’re not used to touchscreen controllers, it may take some time to get used to.

Here are some further reading to help you determine whether or not you want to buy for mobile. Personally, I would rather wait until they have a sale, as I have seen it going for half price or lower than their regular price.

• The latest version for Android is equivalent to PC version 1.4.5, without multiplayer or Chinese support.
• The latest version for iOS is equivalent to PC version 1.4.5, without multiplayer or Chinese support.

If your character no longer appears on the “load” menu, or your game crashes when you try to load your character, please follow these steps:

1. Make sure you are on the same windows account you were using last time you played your character. If not, switch users and try loading your file again.

2. Restart your computer. Try loading your file again.

3. Sometimes, people report that their save file problems fix themselves after a day or so (it sounds odd, but there are logical explanations for this). You can try taking a break from Stardew for one day and coming back to it. Or, continue with the guide and try the other fixes:

4. Exit Steam ( File > Exit ) and relaunch as administrator (right-click the steam icon, select “Run As Administrator”). Try loading your file again. If it still doesn’t work, we need to dig a little deeper.

Finding Your Files

Open File Explorer and navigate to the %appdata%/StardewValley/Saves folder. Verify that a folder exists with your character’s name (the folder will be called followed by an underscore and a bunch of random-looking numbers). If the folder doesn’t exist, check the Recycling Bin or your antivirus software’s quarantine list.

Verify that the folder contains the following files:

File #1. A file with exactly the same name as the folder.
File #2. A file called “SaveGameInfo”
File #3. (optional) A file with the same name as the folder, with an “_old” appended to the end.
File #4. (optional) A file named “SaveGameInfo” with an “_old” appended to the end.

File #1 is your actual save file. It contains all the data that the game needs to load your character. File #2 (SaveGameInfo) is only used by the “Load Game” menu. Files 3 and 4 are backups made by the game in version 1.07 and later. The backup save file is always one day behind the actual save file (in-game progress).

I recommend making a backup of your character’s folder, because the next steps require you to make edits to the files. You can create a folder called “backup” in the StardewValley folder and place your backup in there.

If your character’s save folder contains the two files with “_old” at the end, and you’re okay with losing one day of progress, you can try removing “_old” from the filenames and reloading your game. If that still doesn’t work, or you’d rather not lose one day of progress, proceed.

Making a Diagnosis:

Open your character’s save file (File #1 above) in notepad (it might a few seconds to load).

If the file is blank, your save is lost.

If the file is not blank, then at least part of your save file is in-tact and therefore recoverable. Scroll to the very bottom of the file. If the last text in the file is “”, then your save file is fully in-tact. Therefore the problem must be a corrupt SaveGameInfo file (please skip ahead to the section labeled “Corrupt SaveGameInfo”).

If the last text you find is not “”, then your save file is partially missing. This will require a “transplant” to fix:

What you will need:

A verified “working” save file, opened in notepad
Your corrupt save file, opened in notepad

I highly recommend you make backups of both files before proceeding.

1. In your corrupt file, move the text cursor to the very bottom of the file.

2. Press ctrl+f to bring up the search window. Select “Up” where it says “Direction”. Search for “GameLocation xsi”. You should find something like (“JojaMart” could be something different, like “Town” or “Farm”). Copy that entire fragment (From ).

3. In the working save file, ctrl+f search for the fragment you just copied. Copy everything from the start of that fragment to the very end of the file.

4. In the corrupt file, select everything from the fragment to the very end of the file (make sure you select any “whitespace” at the end of the file as well) and paste over it. Make sure the “start point” for where you copy/paste matches up exactly between the two files!

5. save the corrupt file, and try to load it. If it doesn’t work, try these steps again from the beginning.

SaveGameInfo is not an essential file for your character. It is only used in the Load Game menu, to display information about your character. Therefore, if it is missing or corrupt, your character will not show up in the load game menu. However, the actual save file might be perfectly fine!

To fix this, you can replace the missing/corrupted SaveGameInfo with one from another character. There will be duplicate entries in the Load Game menu, but one of them will be tied to the character you are trying to fix. Once you save again, everything will return to normal on the Load Game menu.

(optional) For convenience, you could open the copied SaveGameInfo file in notepad and change the contents of the field, that way you’ll be able to differentiate between the two files in the load game menu.

Extra Troubleshooting tips:

1. Your character’s save file and your character’s save folder must have exactly the same name!

2. In version 1.07 and later, Stardew Valley keeps the last two save files around for each character (rather than just the current day). So if you are unable to load your character, you can try loading the previous day instead: In File Explorer, navigate to %appdata%/StardewValley/Saves and find your character’s folder. Take the files that say “_old” on the end and remove the “_old” from the filename. You’ll have to remove or rename the regular files to something else before doing this, or else the filenames will clash.

3. Antivirus software can sometimes interfere with Stardew Valley’s ability to save or load files. Add Stardew Valley to your antivirus “whitelist” or try disabling your antivirus before playing (at your own risk!).

As a moderator, I read pretty much everything; nothing is greater than seeing the bold titles go away! But I haven’t played Stardew in a while. I’ve had my fair share of hours– I’ve been playing since the game came out in 2016, and it’s the game on Steam I have the most hours in, since I no-life the game every time a new update comes out.

There are some things I need to do still, especially end-game ones, and there are some Steam achievements I can go for since it would feel SO GOOD to have that as a perfect game on my profile. Buuut.. I just get distracted by other things and I don’t make the time to play the game. ):

Reading in here though, sometimes you guys have conversations that make me go MAN I wish I knew what y’all are talking about LOL. I really enjoy strategy conversations here and it makes me want to try different things, so that’s how I start getting the itch to play. I want to be able to participate!

I don’t understand, “taking a break from the game”.

My daughter gave me the game for Mother’s Day 2020. It was the perfect way to spend during the pandemic. I don’t think a day has gone by that I haven’t played. I play on Steam on my Macbook. I can listen to an audio book or listen to a podcast while I play and that makes me feel less guilty about playing games.

She also got me a Switch for Christmas and it has Animal Crossing on it, but I don’t understand it at all. SO, I don’t play anything else.

What else do you play that keeps you away from Stardew Valley?

Um, yeah. So I’m writing a thing in one of the other sections here and by necessity I need to start a new game for it. Otherwise I usually start a new save when a major update comes out or I want to try out a min/max strategy because, well:

That right there. There’s an active thread now with some excessive strategerizing which contains words I’ve heard before but in configurations and gyrations completely alien to my experience on this planet.

I like words and they are my friends, but they seem to be getting mixed up in unfamiliar company and I’d like to know how they got there.

Honestly, even though mobile has no 1.5 update. I gotta say, mobile is the reason I play so often. It is just so darned convenient. I have my iPad/tablet pretty much anytime I’m sitting. Doesn’t matter if I’m watching TV, or just sitting anywhere surfing the web, Stardew’s is at my fingertips, its app icon looking at me as I scroll through the screens lol.

And, I can do that without having to dig out and plug in the laptop, sit at a desk, or be tethered by bulk and cords. The Bluetooth controller sits there on the coffee table too, taunting me. I’m a PC and Linux gal mostly (though I do have a Mac) and even though I have a super slim tablet PC, it just isn’t as convenient as an iPad with a super long charge the others can’t possibly match. I can take my iPad with me all day and not worry about plugging in, so Stardew at the doctors office, the dentist etc. If I have to sit down at my desk in front of the computer to play, I play less, I don’t know what to say about that, it just is what it is. alt=”🤷‍♀️” />Less comfortable than the couch or my favorite chair. Console is tethered to the wall and no save file access, no thanks. Even having to plug in my tablet PC to play is annoying lol. So, the irony is, the tablet PC is twice the cost of the iPad and it doesn’t get much use unless I have to do power-sucking program stuff (e.g., Photoshop, video editing etc.) or need a very large screen. Even then I cast my iPad to my TV and switch to Bluetooth controller. At least the tablet PC will last longer with lighter use (my mom still has an 8-10 year old ipad of mine, running fine for web surfing, the other devices just don’t last as long). And, Stardew icon staring up at me, innocently. “play me. you know you want to.” alt=”😆” />

Stardew is just so darned relaxing, though waiting for 1.5 (now started over again) is becoming tougher. I have it installed on my PC and can easily transfer my game, but again, convenience is king for me apparently.
