How to sync browser & delicious bookmarks to your ios device

Having an iOS device is essentially like having a mini computer with you all the time. If you browse the web with it, syncing your browser bookmarks between your computer and device is a must and we’ll show you how.

Using iTunes with Internet Explorer

If you’re new to Apple products and iTunes or if you’ve been using it for a while, you may not be aware that you can sync contacts, bookmarks, calendars, and more with iTunes and your iOS device. Open iTunes and plug in your iPhone, iPad, or iPod Touch and click on it under Devices.

Then at the top click on Info, then scroll down to Other and select Sync bookmarks with Internet Explorer…or Safari if you’re on a Mac. You might also want to check bookmarks under Replace information on this iPod to clear out what you have on the device with what’s on your PC.

Make sure you’re closed out of IE or Safari, then click Apply and wait for the sync process to complete.

When it’s done go to your device and open Safari then Bookmarks, and you should see them all there from IE.

If you want to get all of your bookmarks from Chrome & Firefox as well, you might want to export them and import them into IE.

Sync Delicious Bookmarks

If you have a lot of bookmarks on Delicious that you want to bring with you, there is a handy free app you can use called iDelicious Free.

After it’s installed launch iDelicious and go to Settings and sign into your account…

You can use your Delicious login or your Yahoo login as well.

From the main menu you can see your private bookmarks, search by what’s popular, or check out bookmarks shared by other users.

Here is an example of Popular bookmarks that you can browse through on your device.

If you use the Delicious service to save and share bookmarks, you’ll probably want to take a look at the iDelicious Bookmarks Free App.

There is also a pro version for $0.99 which has more features, but if you just need an easy way to access Delicious bookmarks, the free app is perfectly capable.

Xmarks Mobile

Another easy way to sync your bookmarks is to use Xmarks Mobile which is $0.99. Although, you may want to heed caution with Xmarks, as their future seems a bit uncertain. The way it looks now, if Xmarks stays alive, there will be a fee for the service.

For Xmarks Mobile to work you’ll of course need it installed on the browsers on you computer.

Then browse to your favorite sites on the go! It doesn’t change the bookmarks you have in the Safari browser on your device.

If you’ve been looking for an easy way to sync your bookmarks from you computer to your iOS device, any of the methods above do a good job.

It’s very difficult to imagine a world without bookmarks. Besides the built-in bookmark option in you web browser, there is a whole variety of services, such as Delicious, Pocket and Keeeb, that let you bookmark images, videos and other awesome things you find online. And just when you begin to think you’re out of options, a new alternative enters the block. Raindrop.io is one such amazing online tool for Chrome, Firefox, Safari, Opera, and iOS that wants to make bookmarking easy and fun. With a simple click, you can save different items for later reading, and have them synced across web and mobile. You can save pages, articles, videos or photos in a snap, organize collection contents and share them with friends via email or social media networks.

At its core, Raindrop.io is an intuitive online web app that enables you to store your bookmarks in the cloud, allowing you to access them from any computer or device with an internet connection. If you’re an iOS user then fortunately there’s a native app for that too.

Getting started with it is straightforward; visit Raindrop’s website and navigate to the registration page. You can sign up for a free account using Facebook, Google or Twitter credentials or choose a new username and password.

After registering an account, you can download an extension for your web browser of choice, or the iOS app for your iDevice, and begin creating bookmarks right away. The Chrome extension I gave a shot during testing worked pretty flawlessly. And it’s fairly user-friendly too. Here’s how to use it.

When you stumble upon an interesting piece of content that’s worth saving, simply click Raindrop’s button in the address bar. You can add tags to your bookmark, as well as create different collections to group similar items.

Raindrop even lets you choose the type of content you’re going to bookmark, for example, a web page link, a blog article, photo, or other content. Having done that, you can click Add to sync it to your cloud account.

All your synced bookmarks can be accessed via the web based dashboard which looks clean and user-friendly. By default, all of the pages you saved as bookmarks are private but you can make them public to let others access them too. If the bookmark is an article, Raindrop will chop off any intrusive elements like scripts, ads and social buttons etc. to enhance readability.

Another interesting bit is the Subscriptions page where users can subscribe to collections created by others. This is quite handy if you want to keep a tab on bookmarks related to the same subject or topic, for instance, web development, inspiration, web design etc. Though, as of this writing, the available subscriptions are fairly limited.

Overall, Raindrop is one of the simplest ways to bookmark online content and make it accessible via PC and mobile.

Can it be set up to automatically sync my google Chrome bookmarks to raindrop, so that I can then log in at work (without downloading any extensions) and have access to all my Chrome bookmarks? Does it work like Xmarks and actually sync ALL my bookmarks automatically, or is it more like an individual link by link manual system?

Delicious is a social bookmarking service that lets you tag, save, manage and share Web pages “in the cloud.” Along with letting you easily keep your bookmarks synced across multiple computers, Delicious provides a number of social tools to help you discover new Websites and share them with others. Pinboard, on the other hand, is a minimalist bookmarking site that offers many of Delicious’s features along with the ability to keep your bookmarks private—hence the “antisocial” part.

The $2 Delibar for iPhone app lets you sync one or more of your Delicious or Pinboard accounts with your iPhone. Once your bookmarks are synced you can search them, add new bookmarks, or modify your existing ones, all directly from your device.

Other highlights of Delibar for iPhone include the ability to perform global searches across all your bookmarks, the ability to navigate bookmarks by tags, save searches for later quick access, and browse your friends’ bookmarks. There’s also integration with Web services like Instapaper and Mobilizer and a bookmarklet you can use with the iPhone’s own Safari browser.

If you have a large collection of bookmarks on your Desktop or Laptop computer and want to add them to your iPad, you could go through the long task of typing them in one-at-a-time or you could opt for a simpler, less painful method using iTunes to transfer the bookmarks for you. The two-way sync will work with Safari on Mac computers and with both Internet Explorer and Safari for Windows on Windows PC’s. You can use a workaround to get Chrome or Firefox bookmarks onto the iPad, but it will not give you a 2-way sync between browsers.

1. Connect your iPad to your computer and open iTunes.

2. Select your device from the left column.

3. In the right column, select the Info tab.

4. Scroll down to the Other section.

5. For Mac users: Check the Sync Safari bookmarks checkbox.

For Windows users: Check the Sync bookmarks from checkbox and select either Internet Explorer or Safari from the dropdown menu.

6. Click the Apply or Sync button.

The two-way sync between your device and your computer is now created and will include them in the sync process when the device is connected to iTunes.

If you are using a browser other than those mentioned above, you can still get your bookmarks to your device by using iTunes, unfortunately this means that you will have to export your bookmarks from Chrome, Firefox, Opera, etc. and import them into either Internet Explorer or Safari. You would then use the above steps to move the bookmarks to your device. While it does seem to be a sloppy solution, it sure beats having to enter the bookmarks by hand.

If you use Firefox on multiple devices, a free Firefox Account lets you sync your history, open tabs, bookmarks and passwords on all your devices. All you need is an email address and password.

Tap the menu button at the bottom of the screen (the menu will be at the top right if you’re using an iPad):

• To sign in using QR code pairing:
  • Visit on your desktop to show the QR code (you might need to sign in to your Firefox Account first).
  • When the QR code displays, tap Ready to Scan on your phone.
  • Scan the QR code on your desktop. Firefox will automatically sign in and sync your information.
  • Tap Use Email instead .
  • Enter your login credentials or sign up for an account (it’s free) if you don’t have one.

  For Firefox and Internet Explorer, at least, we'll whole-heartedly recommend the newly IE-friendly and Safari-friendly Foxmarks . It doesn't have the password support of its Firefox iterations, but it does do an admirably swift job of keeping your bookmarks and toolbar favorites synced up in the background.

  As for Chrome and Opera, well, that's a trickier task. If you're using all four browsers equally, you might want to consider using the long-standing, well-tested Delicious as your primary bookmarking tool, since its accessible from anywhere, keeps everything in sync with or without your action, and has handy bookmark bar tools for reading and saving bookmarks from any browser. When you import your bookmarks from any browser, they'll be set to private by default, saving you a whole bunch of work. The minor pain is that new bookmarks can't be set to private by default (correct me if I'm wrong, readers!), but it's truly the only way to keep your bookmarks in sync without a lot of import/export/save shuffling.
