How to sideload android apps onto your amazon fire tv and fire tv stick

When you bought your Kindle Fire, maybe you knew that you were entering a world without the Google Play Store, and did it anyway. Or, perhaps you were surprised to find out that you weren’t able to find apps like Chrome and YouTube in the Amazon App Store. And you’d love your Fire just a little more if you could add a few of your favorite apps!

Luckily, this isn’t hard to do. You can install individual apps directly onto your Fire, called “Sideloading.” Note that some apps may not work on the Fire if installed this way, especially paid apps or apps that require in-app purchasing, and most Google apps won’t work either (Chrome is a big exception – it works, as long as you don’t want to sign in and sync Chrome with other devices). For these I would recommend reading our tutorial on how to get the Google Play Store on your Fire.
Either way, know that there is some risk in altering your Fire this way. Be especially careful of where you get your APK files from.

Sideloading onto your Fire involves three steps: getting the APK file, getting that file to your Fire, and installing it. But the first thing you want to do is get your Fire ready to install apps from someplace other than the Amazon Apps Store. Do this no matter which method you’re planning on using.

1. Swipe down from the top of the screen and press Settings. Scroll down to the Personal section and press Security. Under Advanced, turn on Apps from Unknown Sources. You’ll see a warning about being responsible for all damage to your Fire that unknown source apps can do. This would be a good time to mention that while this is an easy process, you do it at your own risk. Press OK.

2. Restart your Fire by holding down the Power button until you’re asked, “Do you want to shut down your Fire?” Press “OK” Once your Fire has turned off completely, press the power button and turn it back on.

Sideloading From Another Android Device

There are several ways to get an APK file. APK is a file extension used by Android. The easiest way to get your hands on an APK file is if you already have an Android phone. I like this method the best because you know you’re getting the file from a reliable place.

1. Download Apk Extractor to your Android phone from the Google Play Store.

2. Open Apk Extractor. You will be able to see every APK file on your phone.

3. Choose the app you want to install on your Fire. In this example, I’m using Chrome. Press the three dots next to the app and then press share.

4. Decide how you want to share the file to your Fire device. My preferred method is to just email it to myself and then open the email on the Fire, but a lot of these files are too big. Another good method is to share it to Dropbox or OneDrive and then retrieve the file on the Fire.

6. When it’s done downloading, scroll down to the bottom of the screen and press Install.

The app will now be on your Home screen and ready to use!

You now have a working version of Chrome. Although, you can’t sign in to sync with Chrome on other devices. If you want to do that, see my tutorial about adding the Google Play Store to your Fire.

Sideloading From The Silk Browser

Another easy way is to find the APK file on a site like APK Mirror and download the file directly to your Fire.

1. On your Fire, open the Silk browser and go to APKMirror.com.

3. On the next page, if there’s only one version of the app you’ll see, press Download APK to start your download. If there’s more than one version of the file, press See Available APKS and pick the version that’s right for your device (APK Mirror has a faq page to help you figure it out, but when in doubt, go for the version that says “nodpi” and that matches your Fire’s OS). Press that version and on the next page press Download APK to start your download.

4. A pop-up will warn you that the file could harm your device. Press OK.

5. Swipe down from the top of the screen and find your download in progress. When the file is finished downloading press the completed download notification, scroll to the bottom of the page if necessary, then press Install.

6. The app will now be on your Home screen and ready to use!

7. You now have a working version of Chrome. However, as I mentioned before, you won’t be able to sign in to sync with Chrome on other devices. If you want to do that, see my tutorial about adding the Google Play Store to your Fire.

How to sideload android apps onto your amazon fire tv and fire tv stick

If you are looking to install an Android app on Fire TV Stick, which is not available in the Amazon app store, check out the guide to know how you can.

Installing a third-party app on firestick is also called sideloading. So to sideload the app, you need to enable Developer Options from the settings area of Fire TV stick.

Assume that you have already set up your fire TV stick and you are already using it you can turn it on and go to the ‘My Fire TV’ section from the settings area.

Scroll down, and select the Developer Options, on the next screen, you will find the option to install apps from unknown sources. You have to turn it on.

Once you are done, you will be able to install APK files of Android apps.

To install APK files on your Amazon Fire TV stick, you need to have the APK file on the Fire TV stick itself, which you can download using a browser.

Now there are two ways to download APK files so that you can install them on your fire TV stick.

Method 1: By using the Silk Browser on Fire TV stick.

You can install the Silk browser from the Amazon app store, within the Fire Tv Stick.

Navigate to the app store, and scroll to find the Silk Browser. Alternatively, you can use the search option to search and install the Silk Browser.

How to get the APK links?

When you are using the first method you can directly search for the link on the web, mostly you would get the direct download link, and will be able to download the apk on your fire TV stick.

I would recommend you install the fire TV remote on your mobile phone, and it is available for both Android as well as iOS.

The Fire TV remote on your mobile makes it easier to copy-paste the link since you will be able to use the keyboard of your mobile phone instead of using the virtual keyboard which you have to navigate through using the remote.

How to sideload android apps onto your amazon fire tv and fire tv stick

Open and search for the APK on your mobile, then tap on the download, mostly all the download sites will automatically start the download on the file.

You can cancel the download and copy the link from the page which gives the option to click on a link in case the download doesn’t start automatically.

Please Note: If this option is not available, you can download the APK and upload it on either Dropbox or Google Drive, and copy-paste the share link.

How to sideload android apps onto your amazon fire tv and fire tv stick

Launch ES explorer on the Fire TV stick, navigate to the Download Manager, Tap on New, paste the URL using Fire TV Mobile App, and download the apk on your fire TV stick.

This is is universally applicable to any apk file you want to install on your Fire TV stick. Keep in mind, id.me app is not optimized for TV screens you will still get, smartphone-like user interface, which might not seem ideal on a big TV screen.

For example: You can download showbox APK file on your fire TV stick and install it to watch movies that are not available in any other streaming platform.

Now that Sling TV has officially launched, Dish is trying to block the streaming video service on unsupported Android devices.

Specifically, Dish is preventing the latest version of its Android phone and tablet app from running on television dongles and set-top boxes. That means you can’t sideload the app onto generic Android television boxes or onto Amazon’s Fire TV.

Cord Cutters News first reported the blockage, and we’ve confirmed that Sling TV spits back an error message when running on a Fire TV Stick: “This version of Sling TV is not supported on this device. Please try re-installing from the app store.”

The good news is that users can still sideload an older version of the Sling TV app onto unsupported Android devices. Cutting Cords has a link to a working APK, which ran on our Fire TV Stick without issue. (For instructions on sideloading to Fire TV devices, AFTVNews has a helpful guide.)

Dish is working on a proper Sling TV app for Fire TV, along with an app for official Android TV devices such as Google’s Nexus Player, but the company hasn’t said when those apps will arrive. We’ve reached out to Dish for clarification on the blocking and the timing of the official apps.

Why this matters: While the sideloaded smartphone app works fairly well on a Fire TV, it’s hardly ideal to run an older version forever. Sling TV’s initial release isn’t perfect, and users without official device support will have to live without bug fixes and feature improvements. It’d be nice if Dish could let sideloading slide, but as it stands subscribers will have to think twice about buying an Android device without guaranteed support.

How to sideload android apps onto your amazon fire tv and fire tv stick

Your Android TV such as Mi Box or Nvidia Shield TV comes with the Google Play Store. And it’s pretty good. However, it only features apps that are optimized for the TV interface. But there are times when you have to sideload apps on your Android TV. For example, the other day, I wanted to install my a VPN app on my Shield TV box, so that I can watch American Netflix, but I couldn’t find it on the Android TV store.

Turns out there are multiple ways to sideload apps on your Android TV, depending on whether you have Pendrive, Smartphone, WiFi or none of them. Each method has its pros and cons. Let’s check them out. Shall we?

Most of the sideloaded apps won’t be visible in your native launcher, so make sure you use Sideload launcher or any Android TV launcher that supports sideloaded apps.

Sideload Apps on Android TV

Method 1. Using a flash drive

The handiest way to sideload apps on your streaming device can be via Flash drives. Most popular Android TV box such as Mi box and Nvidia Shield TV comes with a USB port. So, if you have a spare flash drive nearby, you can copy APKs from your computer, or if you are on Android, first you need to download any backup app like Apk Extractor from Google play store to extract apk of the installed app. Once you send the file to the USB stick, remove the flash drive from the smartphone/computer and plug it in the Android TV box. Once in, use any Android TV file manager such as File Commander to navigate to the USB drive and install it.

Since Amazon firestick is also based on Android OS, this trick work there, however, you have to buy a three-way OTG splitter to access the flash drive, which is a hassle.

  • Easy to use
  • Needs no WiFi
  • I f there is no flash drive nearby, this won’t work.

Method 2. Using Google drive

The previous method was bit inconvenient as it requires both USB OTG adapter (since most phones have Type C port) as well as a flash drive. In case you don’t have access to those, you can also use cloud-based services like Google Drive to transfer APKs from your Phone or Computer to your Android-based streaming device like Firestick or Android TV

Start by downloading the apk from APKMirror on your phone or PC. The reason we recommend APKMirror is because it’s from the reputable ‘Android Police’ and free of any malware. Though it’s filled with a lot of Google Ads, and finding the right download is still a bit confusing.

Once you download the apk, upload it to your Google Drive account and head to your streaming device. Open File Commander or any other file explorer with cloud support and login with the same Google account which has the Apks. D ownload and install them.

  • No hardware needed
  • Although this may sound easy, it’s just too much work

Method 3. Transfer via WiFi

Since Android TV or even the Fire Stick are already always connected to the Internet, it makes sense to use wifi to transfer Apks and install them. So, to get this work, first, you need to install WiFi file transfer app on your Android TV. The app has 50MB file limit on the free version which shouldn’t be the problem since most apks are smaller than that, however, you can remove by upgrading to the paid app that costs $0.99.

Use the previous two methods to install WiFi File transfer on your device. Once done, open the app, it will show you an IP address. You can type this IP address on your computer or Android phone’s browser and then just drag and drop the apk files here. Now you can transfer files from your phone and install them. Of course, you can also transfer large files like movies using this app as well.

If you are on fire tv stick, you can use the Easy fire tools app to transfer apps installed on the phone or APKs directly to your fire tv stick. It works on the same principle as the previous one, however, you don’t have to install the companion app on your TV as you did with WiFi File transfer.

  • Easy to use
  • No hardware needed
  • Efficient for long term
  • Needs WiFi
  • Cog up the memory of both your phone and your streaming

Method 4. Use Android TV Browser

You might already know, you can access the web on Android TV using web browsers like Puffin TV. So, why not use it to download apps on your Android TV? Simply, open Puffin TV and head to ApkMirror, perform a quick search for the apps you want to download and you will be able to download the apk after battling intrusive ads on the website.

  • Easy to use
  • Save a lot of time
  • Intrusive Ads

Method 5. Use Aptoide TV

Even after the presence of Play Store on the Android tv and Amazon Store on the Fire TV stick, the app available for these devices is quite and since most apps are not fully optimized. Yet, these unoptimized apps work fine (like WiFi file transfer we use in method #3) on Android TV. Enter Aptoide TV, an alternative Play Store for Android tv as well as the Firestick.

To access unoptimized Android apps on your Android TV, you can use Aptoide TV store, Yes this store is capable enough to be called as a competitor to play store on the tv ecosystem. Use any of the methods discussed to install Aptoide TV apk and open it. Once in, now you can download and install apps which are natively not available on the play store but good enough to be on android tv. The only downside to this store is that it has all sorts of apps without any guideline.

  • Auto-update
  • Efficient for long term
  • Some apps are pirated

If we miss out any better way to sideload apps on Android TV, share it with us in the comments below.

Apps are the lifeblood of any operating system. Without apps, we can only do so much on platforms like Android. Fortunately, Google Play offers millions of apps, but due to platform restrictions, not every good app can be found on the store. Sometimes, app availability is also restricted on a geographical basis. So the only way to get such apps is by sideloading them.

Thanks to the openness of Android, you can sideload and install Android apps from third-party stores as well as other sources. In this guide, we’ll explain how you can sideload Android apps.

Navigate this guide:

Getting the APK files or app bundles

How to sideload android apps onto your amazon fire tv and fire tv stick

Before you can sideload an app on Android, you need to obtain its installation file. Android app installers have the .APK file extension that’s short for Android Package. APK files contain everything that’s needed to install and run the app. Apart from APKs, you’ll find app bundles, which are also used to install Android apps.

There are two kinds of app bundles – official and unofficial. The official Android app bundle format is AAB and it was introduced back in 2018 by Google. The company is making it mandatory for app developers to publish all new Android apps in AAB in the Google Play store starting August 2021. One can also covert a standard AAB package to an APK set archive, which uses the .apks file extension.

The unofficial app bundles come from sites like APKMirror and APKPure, which have created their own app bundles called APKM and XAPK, respectively. The app bundles pack a base APK file and multiple resource bundles meant for different architectures, layouts, and languages.

These APKs and app bundles are shared by the developers and community members on XDA forums, uploaded on third-party resources like APK Mirror, APKPure, or on stores like F-Droid and Amazon. Once you’ve obtained the APK file or an app bundle for the app you need to install, we can move forward to the actual sideloading bit.

Caution: Do not install APK files from random sources. Only install APK files from trusted sources. Otherwise, you could end up infecting your device with malware.

Transferring the APK or App Bundle to your phone

If you haven’t downloaded the APK file or the app bundle directly onto your Android phone, you’ll need to transfer it from your computer to the phone. You can transfer it using Bluetooth, a USB cable, or a cloud storage service. Using a cloud storage service like Google Drive is normally the easiest way to get an APK onto your phone. Just upload it onto Google Drive from your computer, and download it using the Drive app on your phone. If you’re looking for more methods for file transfer, check out our guide on How to Transfer Files between Android and Windows PC.

Installing/Sideloading the APK file

How to sideload android apps onto your amazon fire tv and fire tv stick How to sideload android apps onto your amazon fire tv and fire tv stick How to sideload android apps onto your amazon fire tv and fire tv stick How to sideload android apps onto your amazon fire tv and fire tv stick

Once the APK has been transferred to your phone, you’re ready to install it.

  • Locate the file on your phone. The downloaded APKs can be found in the Downloads app. Or you can use a file manager to navigate to the Downloads folder.
  • Tap on the file name to start the installation. If this is the first time you’re installing an APK from that file manager, the Downloads app, or the web browser, Android will throw a warning and ask your permission to continue. Give the permission and, depending on the app from where you’re installing the APK, you may have to tap back to get to the installer. In some apps, you’ll automatically be sent back to the installer.
  • Tap on Install, and the application will be installed successfully unless there are compatibility issues.

If your Android device is running on Nougat or an older version, you’ll first have to enable Installation from Unknown Sources by going to Settings > Security, after which you’ll be able to install the APK. Sideloading support is available on all Android versions, and you don’t need root access or any other special privileges.

Sideloading App Bundles on Android

While sideloading an APK is pretty easy, as you can see in the previous section, it can be slightly tricky to install app bundles, whether it is the official Android App Bundle or unofficial bundles. Thankfully, there are apps that make it easier to install app bundles. Alternatively, you can use ADB to install the unofficial app bundles and Google’s bundletool to install the official app bundles.

If you want to know how you can stream thousands of movies, shows, and live TV directly on your Amazon firestick or Fire TV you’ve come to the right place. In this guide we will walk you through, step by step, the process of how you set up an app STB emulator which is used to stream IPTV services.

How to sideload android apps onto your amazon fire tv and fire tv stick

The Amazon Firestick and Fire TV have become a staple entertainment product in many households for being one of the least expensive streamers you can buy. One of the downsides to owning the firestick is Amazon really pushes users to integrate to it’s own products further cementing users into their ecosystem.

What this guide will show you how to do is breakout and sideload third party apps that are not readily accessible to fire stick/ FireTv users like the STB emulator application.

What exactly is the STB emulator?

The STB emulator is an application offered through google playstore for android users that emulates MAG devices (a set-top box) which are used for streaming IPTV services. This will allow you to access to any IPTV service that is MAC activated, in order to start streaming you’ll need to have purchased a MAC activated IPTV service which can range anywhere from 5-15 USD per month.

How To install STB Emu on firestick

In order to download and install STB emulator you’ll first need to allow downloads from unknown sources within the settings.

1. Under settings of your firestick > system > select “developer options”.

How To Configure STB Emu App on Firestick

Awesome, we’ve now successfully installed the STB emulator app onto your Amazon firestick or fire TV. The next part would be to configure the app. In order to start streaming you’ll need an active MAC address. This MAC address can be found in the settings as we’ll show you, you’ll then give this number to an IPTV provider to activate the service.

1. When you open the STB emu app for the first time you’ll see the screen below and from here you can select the “configure” option.

How to sideload android apps onto your amazon fire tv and fire tv stick

2. If you see a bluescreen that’s completely normal. You can use mouse cursor of your firestick remote and select upper right hand to reveal on-screen remote. Click on the 3 dots to get the drop down menu and enter the settings.

How to sideload android apps onto your amazon fire tv and fire tv stick

3. Hover over the “New Profile” option and once highlighted press enter . If you’re using multiple servers you can create more than one profile and switch between them.

How to sideload android apps onto your amazon fire tv and fire tv stick

4. In the settings of the STB emulator app select “Profiles”.

5. Profile you can Keep any but best if you name it for IPTV services you are buying so easier to identify if you have multi portal settings.

Next, go into “Portal Settings”.

6. Here you’ll see ‘Portal URL’ as the first option. You will have to edit this field depending on which IPTV service you currently have. This should be given to you by us as your IPTV provider.

7. Exit back one page, back to the profile settings from step 5, here select “STB configuration” option.

8. Inside STB configuration you’ll see MAC Address beginning with 00:1A:79. This is the address you’ll need give your provider. It’s important you have the correct MAC address activated entered here as this is what enables STB emulator access to the server.

In the case a MAC address was generated for you edit the default MAC to match one created.

9. We’re done configuring the app, now just keep pressing back or exit until you see the blue screen. From here use the mouse cursor and select anywhere on the screen, this will reveal on-screen remote. Select the 3 dots on upper right hand side of the screen.

10. This will bring up the drop down menu. Here select profile twice, this will make the screen flash and will restart the portal. If everything has been entered correctly and your service has been activated you’ll see a yellow loading bar.

11. Another way to reload the portal is to select on the upper left hand side of the screen and you’ll see option titled “reload portal”.

Conclusion

That’s all there’s to it, you should now know how to sideload applications like the STB emulator on your Amazon Firestick / Fire TV. Here’s a quick check-list you’re still having issues with the service is not working, just make sure you go through the following checklist:

  • Make sure to have the activated MAC address entered. You can always double check with your provider to confirm if the proper MAC address is being used.
  • Make sure correct URL has been entered in exactly. A single typo will result in an error message.
  • Make sure your device is connected to a network. This would be the most infuriating thing to discover what’s been holding you back so just double check network settings to make sure you have access to the internet.

Hope this sheds some light and make the process of setting up a little easier.

APK Time is an Android app that easily allows you to install special Android APKs that aren’t found in the Google Play or Amazon App Store.

A compiled Android App Kit is called an APK. Developers can choose to put their apps in the Google Play Store for easy searching and downloading, but some choose to keep their work off of the Play Store. APKs that aren’t in the Store must be sideloaded onto your Android TV box. You can individually search, download, and sideload each APK, but the APK Time app consolidates them into its own pseudo-app store.

Upon installing APK Time, you will be presented with a few different categories:

APK Time Categories

  • Top APKs
  • Android TV
  • Entertainment
  • Essentials
  • Fire Devices Only (Amazon)
  • Kodi Mods
  • Live
  • Music
  • Players & Browsers
  • Sport
  • x64
  • x86

APKs within APK Time are designed to make your Android TV box more powerful. Some of the added functionality you can get includes:

  • Mouse Toggle For Android TV – Using an app that requires a mouse but you only have the remote? This app lets you use your remote as a mouse, complete with scrolling, clicking, and dragging.
  • Opera Web Browser – By default, Android TV does not come with a web browser and the only one in the Google Play Store requires a keyboard connected to your box in order to use it. The Opera browser includes full web functionality.
  • Set Orientation – Some Android apps are developed for the phone and its portrait orientation, which means it can look funny on your landscape TV. This APK lets you force your orientation whichever way you want it.
  • Kodi – Can’t access the official website or want to try one of the beta nightly versions of Kodi? APK Time has everything you need.
  • Many more options, including Spotify, Showbox, Terrarium TV, Mobdro, and more.

NOTE: We have no affiliation with APK Time and have no control over what is presented in the app. Feel free to contact @xsmashx88x on Twitter with any questions, comments, or concerns.

Ok, so I sideloaded my Fire TV Stick with TVMC and Kodi (although in my limited understanding, TVMC is just Kodi with all the presets loaded) so I probably only need TVMC for my purposes.

However, after sideloading, I go to manage applications and TVMC is there and it loads up fine but there are no presets or pre loaded information like when i installed it on windows or my android phone. I don’t see Genesis, 1channel, anything. I am at a loss as I feel the instructions are pretty straightforward but I don’t see a step I am missing. I have rebooted everything (I assume removing power from Fire TV stick is the same thing as rebooting).

I would like to understand what is wrong before trying to manually setup Kodi via other instructions/walkthroughs. TVMC is sufficient for my purposes. Thanks for any assistance.

How to sign into Google Play Music on Amazon Fire Stick

I downloaded the AGK Fire app to my Android Phone (Lollipop) and pushed the Google Play Music app to my Amazon Fire Stick. On the Fire Stick, I see Google Play Music under Applications -> Manage Installed Applications. My issue is when I try to "Launch application", the app opens and it says, "Select an account To use Google Play Music on this device, sign in, or add a new account to get started" but there’s no method to sign in. I only see an "Add Account" button and a "Skip" button. Even if I click "Add Account", nothing happens. How do I sign in.

I don’t have a Amazon stick I’m just looking into getting one but I do have a bit of knowledge with android and it sounds like you need other google apps to set up an account. When you add a google account to android it does it all through one app and I’m not sure which one that is but it could be ‘google play services’ however it could lead to force closes if you install it. Not sure if it’s worth the risk personally. I’d look at ways to access your music through third party apps if it’s possible but for sure you wont be able to sign in to google play app without the app that lets you add an account and i’m not sure that would be compatible with amazon os but that’s guessing.

Can anyone tell me if it’s still possible to side load apps? I’m probably going to get an Amazon stick but not sure if I should block the updates or not as I way to install kodi and es file explorer. I only need to install es file explorer and then I can install any .apk’s from my network through es file explorer right? Much easier than using adb everytime
