Check your friend’s progress

With new fitness and activity features in watchOS 8, your Apple Watch can help you stay fit and track workouts.
The Apple Watch has always been a handy tool for tracking workouts and physical activity, but you can do even more courtesy of watchOS 8. With the latest version, you can track additional activities and get voice feedback when you hit certain exercise milestones. Plus, the Fitness app on your iPhone can display workout progress and offer suggestions for improving your health.
View Available Workouts
The Apple Watch has long supported several default workouts such as walking, running, cycling, and rowing. See all the activities available by opening the Workout app on your watch and swiping down the list.
There is a large array of workouts to discover, including archery, bowling, downhill skiing, equestrian sports, golf, hockey, jump rope, paddling, wrestling, and more. Each new version of the watch’s operating system adds others to the mix. High interval training was added with watchOS 6, while dance, functional strength training, core training, and cooldown were included with watchOS 7 in 2020. For watchOS 8, Apple adds tai chi and pilates.
If you don’t spot your favorite workout, swipe to the bottom of the list and select Add Workout.
Start a Workout
When you’re ready to track a workout or activity, swipe through the different activities until you find the one you want. If you wish to set your workout to specific calories, distance, or time, tap the ellipsis icon on the workout and make your pick. Otherwise, tap the workout to begin.
Pause the workout at any time by swiping the screen to the right and tapping Pause. When you’re done, swipe to the right and tap End. A summary screen displays your total time, calories, and other data. Swipe to the bottom of the Summary screen and tap Done to record the workout.
Workout Reminders
You can set reminders on your Apple Watch to tell you to start and stop a workout if the watch detects that you’re performing some type of physical activity. If reminders are enabled and you’ve started a workout, your watch should automatically detect the activity you’re performing and ask if you want to start recording.
The request to record appears as a notification on your watch and offers a few choices: Record Workout, Change Workout, Mute for Today, and Dismiss. You may choose to record your workout if the watch identifies the correct activity. The device should also ask to stop recording after it determines that you’ve finished the workout.
The reminders option is automatically enabled in watchOS 5 or later, but it can be turned off. Open the Settings app on your Watch, swipe to the bottom of the screen, and tap Workout. Swipe down the Workout screen to see the options for Start Workout Reminder and End Workout Reminder; disable one or both of these reminders by tapping the switch.
Additional Workout Settings
At the Workout screen under Settings, you can enable or disable other options. Power Saving Mode turns off cellular connectivity and the built-in heart rate sensor during walking and running workouts to extend battery life.
Tap Auto-Pause and turn on the switch to automatically pause running or outdoor cycling workouts when you stop moving and resume them when you start moving again. Activate Press to Pause to pause or resume your workout by pressing the Side button and the Digital Crown simultaneously. Turn on Detect Gym Equipment to synchronize your workouts with compatible gym equipment.
Get Voice Feedback
Siri can give you voice feedback when you reach certain milestones during a workout. For example, Siri may say that you’ve closed an exercise ring. You don’t even need a headset as the feedback will play over the watch’s built-in speaker.
To set this up directly on your watch, go to Settings > Workout and turn on the switch for Voice Feedback. The next time you reach a specific milestone, such as completing a specific exercise ring, Siri will chime in.
View Activity on Apple Watch
After you’ve compiled some workouts, check your history through the Activity app on your watch. The app shows your activity for the current day in the form of rings around the circle as well as individual charts. The red Move chart displays the calories you’ve burned since the start of the day. The green Exercise chart indicates the amount of time you’ve spent exercising so far. And the blue Stand chart points to the number of hours you’ve spent standing that day. The goal is to close each ring.
Swipe down the screen to see the specific details for the day’s physical activity so far. Then swipe down to the bottom of the screen. Tap Weekly Summary to view a graph for the week and the total number of calories, steps, distance, and other goals you’ve achieved. Tap Change Move Goal to increase or decrease the number of calories you want to burn each day.
View Activity in the Fitness App
The Fitness app on your iPhone offers more data and options than the Activity app on the watch. Open the Fitness app on your phone. The History tab displays activity data and details for the current day. Tap the left arrow next to the month at the top of the screen to display a calendar. Choose a specific date to view the information for that day.
The Workouts section in the Fitness app shows your workout activity for the month. Tap the year at the top to see your overall workouts for each month; tap a specific month to drill down. Tap the All Workouts link at the top to filter the list to show only specific workouts.
I’m less sedentary now that I’ve got a competitor. But the Fitness+ app offers something deeper as well.
By day five of a seven-day Apple Fitness+ competition, things start to get serious. If my childhood best friend texts me tauntingly that she’s beating me by more than a thousand points as the week is winding down, I might hop on my folding workout bike for twenty minutes after dinner even when I really don’t feel like it, to make sure I close my Move ring that day. When I get a notification that she’s completed a walk in the evening, I often hit reply on my watch and tell her to slow down, complaining that I haven’t even gotten up from my desk yet. Just knowing that someone is on the other end of my watch, able to see how much I’ve moved that day, is motivation enough to get me out of my apartment. But unexpectedly, the best part of the Fitness+ app that comes with the Apple Watch isn’t these little notifications that nudge me to be less sedentary.
Before I got my Apple Watch a few months ago, I wasn’t texting my best friend every day. We still don’t, really, since there isn’t much of anything new to talk about. All I do is sit in my apartment. I work, maybe go for a walk. Make dinner. Rinse and repeat. But lately, since I got my watch, we’ve been competing in the Fitness app on a regular basis. And though I haven’t seen her in months—haven’t gotten to hug her, or have a few drinks with her on a Saturday night—what I do get is a daily notification on my watch telling me that she’s just completed a 20-minute strength training workout. As it turns out, that’s not nothing.
I began sharing my Fitness stats with all the people in my life who have Apple Watches, because the eyes of others felt like a good way to motivate myself after a long winter spent sitting. Apple Fitness+ comes free for three months with any new Apple Watch. It’s a copycat Peloton app, basically, with guided running, spinning, rowing, dance classes, and the list goes on, all of which you do while wearing your Apple Watch so it can measure heart rate and calories burned. When you add friends on it, the watch buzzes to let you know whenever they finish a workout, too, and you can check to see how they’re doing with their goals that day. You can also reply to them encouragingly and express how impressed (or unimpressed!) you are. Then, there is the competition feature: You challenge your friends to go head-to-head, collecting points based on your own achievements toward your goals.

Something New
Apple Watch users can have friendly exercise competitions with friends who also use the device to help with motivation and make working out more fun.

It can be difficult to find the right motivation to get off the couch and break a sweat at times, but when bragging rights are on the line between someone and a close friend, the whole exercise experience can be a lot more fun and engaging.
The Apple Watch is a very social gadget by design. Users can send text messages and phone calls on it, have walkie-talkie conversations, and more. This social aspect even carries over to the Apple Fitness app, where users are encouraged to share their fitness activity with other Apple Watch users. When sharing fitness data with a contact, people can see each other’s move/exercise/stand progress for the day, how many steps they’ve taken, and how much distance they’ve traveled. Seeing all of that passive information is great, but when a competition is started, things get really fun.
To start a workout competition on the Apple Watch, doing so takes just a few taps. Per Apple’s instructions, open the Activity app on the Apple Watch, swipe over to the Sharing screen, tap on a contact that’s sharing their activity info, and then tap the ‘Compete’ button on the bottom of their page. There’s then a pop-up message confirming that the user wants to begin the competition. To finalize the invite, tap ‘Invite [contact name],’ and that’s all there is to it. For users that would rather do this from their iPhone, the process is pretty similar. Open the Fitness app on the iPhone, tap the ‘Sharing’ icon at the bottom of the screen, tap on a contact, and then tap ‘Compete with [contact name].’
How Apple Watch Workout Competitions Work
For users that have never engaged in an Apple Watch competition before, the rules are pretty simple. The competition lasts for seven days, with the goal being to get more points than the other person does in that time. A point is earned for every percentage added to all three activity rings (move, exercise, and stand), giving users ample opportunities to rack up points over the week-long battle.
Apple Watch users can earn up to 600 activity points per day for a maximum possible score of 4,200 points for the week. For example, if someone completed 125% of their move goal, 50% of their exercise goal, and 25% of their stand goal, that would result in 200 points earned for the day. Ongoing competitions can be viewed on the Sharing page at any time, and when a competition is complete, the winner earns a special badge to flaunt to their friends.
Fitness is more fun with friends, and while getting those notifications and sparkling animations when you’ve closed a Move, Exercise, or Stand ring is already satisfying, sharing those achievements with friends and watching them meet their daily goals feels even better.
For competitive types who thrive on a little healthy competition, you can also invite friends to weeklong challenges in which you earn points based on ring progress.

1. Open the Activity app on your Apple Watch.
2. Swipe left to access the “Sharing” tab.
3. Scroll down and tap “Send message to all.” To send a message to a specific friend, tap their name, scroll to the bottom, and tap “Send Message.”

2. Go to the “Sharing” tab. Tap on a friend’s name.
3. From here, you can mute notifications from this friend, hide your activity from them, and remove them.
4. You can also start a competition, in which you earn points by closing your Activity rings (a point for every percentage you close your rings) for a period of 7 days.
In watchOS 5, there’s a new Apple Watch activity feature that’s designed to motivate people to work out and get active through competitions with friends.
You can challenge any friend to a seven-day competition on Apple Watch, with each person earning points for filling their rings each day.
How to Start a Competition
You can begin a competition on the Apple Watch itself or within the Activity app on the iPhone, with the latter method being the easiest way to get going.
Before a competition can start, you need to be sharing your activity information with the person you’re challenging, which you can do by following these steps:
- Open up the Activity app.
- Tap the Sharing tab.
- Press the “+” button to invite one or more contacts with an Apple Watch.
- Choose the “Send” button to send them an invite to share activity data with you.
- Wait for your friend to accept the invitation.
Once you’re sharing data with someone, you can begin a competition. Again, this is easiest in the Activity app on the iPhone.
- Open the Activity app.
- Tap the Sharing tab.
- Choose a friend you’re sharing data with.
- Tap on “Compete with [friend’s name].”
- Wait for your friend to accept the challenge.
You can invite friends you’re already sharing with to competitions using the Apple Watch if preferred.
Just open the Activity app on Apple Watch, tap on a friend’s name, and then tap “Compete” twice through the subsequent menus to launch a competition.
Competition Rules
Your friend will have 48 hours to respond to your invite, with a competition officially starting after 48 hours if the invite was accepted. Competitions will last for seven days, so if your competition started on a Saturday morning, for example, it will end on the following Friday evening.
Competitions start in the morning so no one is caught off guard and so each person has seven full days to complete all of their movement goals. You can have more than one competition going at once, but you can only compete with one person per competition, so you can’t have three or more people competing together.
Each person earns points for closing the Stand ring, the Move ring, and the Exercise ring. Points are awarded for exceeding each goal and hitting additional move and exercise goals.
As with all activity sharing, you will receive notifications whenever your friend completes a workout. If you want to mute these notifications, open up the Activity app, choose the Sharing tab, select a competition, and the scroll down to the bottom of the screen to find the “Mute Notifications” option.
How Points Are Calculated
Each person participating in the competition receives one point for every percent added to the Stand, Move, and Exercise rings, with up to 600 points available to be earned per day.
So, for example, if you exceed your move goal by 300 percent, you’ll receive 300 points for the day. Similar calculations are used for the stand and exercise options.
A total of 4,200 points can be earned for the week, with the award going to whoever earns the most points.
Checking on Your Competition Status
You can view how many points you have compared to the person you’re competing with either through the Activity app on iPhone or the Activity app on Apple Watch.
It’s best to view this data on the iPhone because you can see more information about how the competition is going, with full data for each day of the competition available.
- Open the Activity app.
- Select the Sharing tab.
- Tap the relevant competition listing under the “Competitions” header.
In this section of the Activity app, you can see the total of number of points each person has earned and then a breakdown of the points earned each day of the competition.
You can also see your friend’s total movement, exercise, and stand rankings for the current day, plus steps and total distance traveled.
Sending Kudos
When your competitor completes a workout during the challenge, you’ll get a notification, and you can send a message using the Apple Watch. You can also initiate conversations within the Activity App on the Apple Watch or the Activity app on iPhone by selecting the person’s name and tapping on “Send Message.”
Winning a Competition
When you win a competition with a friend, you earn a badge for completing a competition and a separate badge for being victorious.
From there, you can start a new challenge with the same friend, and under the sharing interface, you’ll see your respective number of wins and losses.
All of your badges can be viewed in the Activity app either on the Apple Watch or on the iPhone.
If you like to workout with friends or find a little healthy competition between you and someone else important to achieving your fitness goals, the Activity app can help you out. When you enable Sharing on your iPhone and Apple Watch, other people can view your progress and compare and challenge themselves to work out as hard or harder than you, and even send you taunting messages along the way.
What Activity data gets shared when I connect with friends?
When you add a pal to your Sharing screen, you’ll see all their Activity data from that day forward — and they’ll get all of yours, too. But what exactly is Activity data? It breaks down into a few categories:
- Your day’s Activity rings (Move, Exercise, and Stand) and your personal goals for each
- Calories burned
- Minutes exercised
- Hours stood
- Steps taken
- Distance traveled
Your Apple Watch and the Activity app will never share more personal and confidential data with your friends, like your heartbeat, or any other Health data potentially collected by the watch.
You also won’t get a comprehensive date view of your friends’ data the way you can scrutinize your own. You’ll have a week’s worth of activity data in the Sharing screen and can tap on your friend’s profile for each of those individual days, but you won’t be able to see a graph of their movement over time, or any major trend line information.
How to turn on Activity Sharing
To turn on Activity Sharing with your pals, you’ll need to use your iPhone and the Activity app — if you attempt to try to do it directly from the Apple Watch, a prompt appears that says, “To start sharing your Activity, use the Activity app on your iPhone”.
- Launch the Activity app from your iPhone’s home screen.
- Tap the Sharing button.
Tap the red plus sign (+) in the upper right corner.
Tap Send.
Once you’ve done so, you’ll be able to view your progress alongside that of your friends inside the Sharing pane of the Activity app.
How to share your Activity rings without using Activity Sharing
Want to brag to someone who doesn’t have an Apple Watch? You can share your Activity rings as a stand-alone image from the Sharing screen. Here’s how.
- From the Sharing screen, tap on the Me entry.
- Tap on the Share button in the upper right corner.
Tap Save Image, Copy, Message, Mail, or any other Share Sheet option.
How to view your friends’ Shared Activity data
After you’ve added a few friends to your Sharing screen, you’ll see their Activity rings show up alongside their name, and (by default) their Move goal percentage and calories burned.
If you’re less about calories and more interested in exercise time or miles walked, you can tap the text in the upper left corner to change metrics: You can sort by alphabetical name, Move goal, Exercise goal, Steps goal, or Number of Workouts.
You can also message your friends with a quippy joke or workout-related gif by tapping the Messages button in the upper right corner. There’s no way to create Activity groups as of yet, though you can message people individually.
How to view, mute, and remove a specific friend’s Activity data on your iPhone
Tap on the person from the Sharing list to view their Activity profile. This displays their move rings, calories burned, exercise data, stand rings, steps, and distance for the day. There are a few things you can do from this screen:
- To mute Activity notifications from this person, tap Mute Notifications.
To remove this person from your Sharing list, tap Remove Friend.
How to hide your activity data from your friends
Feeling ashamed about your Activity data lately? Going on vacation and don’t want your pals to know how many steps you’re not walking? You can hide your activity data on a per-friend basis with a few quick steps.
- Visit your friend’s Activity profile.
- Scroll down and tap on Hide my Activity. All your Activity data will be hidden until further notice.
- To turn Sharing back on, just tap Stop Hiding my Activity.
How Apple’s Activity Sharing security works
Being able to share your activity is great, but you might be wondering, “What’s Apple doing with my data, and what exactly does it collect?” Apple is actually fairly transparent about this. Just open the Activity app, then tap Sharing, scroll down to the bottom of the page and tap See how your data is managed… to see it for yourself.
Apple outlines specifically what data is shared and who can see it.
- Friends may be able to see active calories/kilojoules, exercise minutes, stand or roll hours, steps, time zone, workout type, and duration. Any awards you are given may also be shared with friends.
- Anyone that you invite or accept an invitation from will be able to see your iCloud email address.
- Apple will also be sent your Workout and Activity data if you choose to use Activity Sharing. This allows Apple to securely end the data to whomever you choose to share it with. Apple says that the data is only retained for a short time, and is only used to enable Activity Sharing.
Apple notes that you can remove friends at any point if you want to stop sharing your workouts and activity with them. Additionally, using the Remove Friend option in Sharing will keep a removed person from seeing your activity data.
Questions?
Any other questions about how sharing Activity data from your Apple Watch works in iOS and watchOS? Let us know in the comments!
Updated July 2019. Added information for watchOS 6. Serenity Caldwell contributed to an earlier version of this guide.
The Apple Watch is a great tool for tracking your physical activity. In addition to following the steps, you can take things up a notch by challenging a friend to a week-long competition. But before you can participate, you must share your activity with others.
How to add friends to activity sharing from your iPhone
When you invite a friend to share activities, you will be able to see their progress on their daily rings, track their workouts, send encouragement messages and vice versa.
To add friends to activity sharing from your iPhone, open the “Activity” app on your iPhone and go to the “Sharing” tab. If prompted, press the “Start” button.
From the Share screen, press the “+” button in the upper right corner.
Here, find a contact with an Apple Watch to add it to activity sharing.
Once you have found a contact (you can add multiple contacts at once), press the “Send” button.
Your friend will receive a notification asking if they want to share their activity with you. Once they activate the feature, their activity data will show on your sharing screen.
How to add friends to activity sharing from your Apple Watch
You can also complete this process from your Apple Watch. Press the digital crown on the side of your Apple Watch to open the Apps screen.
Here, select the “Activity” application. Now swipe down on the screen and tap on the “Invite a friend” option.
You will see a list of all your contacts. Scroll down and tap the contact you want to invite.
You will now see their name listed in the “Guests” section. Once they accept your invitation, you will receive a notification letting you know that they are now sharing their activity data with you.
How to compete with friends on iPhone
Once the activity sharing feature is activated, you can invite a friend for a week-long competition.
Open the “Activity” application on your iPhone once. From the “Sharing” screen, tap your friend’s name.
Here, swipe down and tap the “Compete with (friend)” button.
In the pop-up window, press the “Invite (friend)” button.
You can also press the “View Rules” button to view the contest rules. You get one point for every percent you add to your rings each day. The competition lasts for seven days and you can earn up to 600 points per day.
At the end of the week, whoever has the highest score wins.
When your friend accepts the challenge, you’ll see a notification about it on your iPhone or Apple Watch. The competition will start the next day.
You’ll receive updates on your Apple Watch when your friend finishes their workouts, and you’ll see the scores at the start of each day.
To view detailed data at any time, open the “Sharing” section in the Activity app and go to your friend’s screen.
At the end of the week, you will receive a notification indicating who won the contest.
You can also access your friend’s page in the “Sharing” section to see the results and follow all the results of the past contest.

Apple Watch Activity App Competitions – Now is the perfect time!
Do you have a competitive side? Would you like to get into better shape?
If you are serious about improving your fitness level then you will do better if you have an accountability partner.
The Apple Watch encourages you to close your Activity Rings each day, but there’s nothing better than having a family member or friend as your accountability partner.
In the Activity App, you can have a 7-day competition with anyone who has an Apple Watch, once you share your activity information with them.
What is an Activity App Competition?
A Competition in the Activity app is a 1-week competition between you and a friend or family member who also has an Apple Watch. The competitions are based on the Activity Rings – Move, Exercise and Stand.
Each person can get a maximum of 600 points per day, and the person who has the most points at the end of seven days is the winner of the competition.
You get a point for each percent of each ring that you close. If you close a ring, you will get 100 points, however, if you exceed the total for any ring, you can get more than 100 points. If you stand for 15 hours, you will get 125 points, and if you do 60 minutes of exercise, you will get 200 points.
Your move goal can be changed by you. If your move goal is 500, you’ll get 100 points for 500 calories, but if you’re competing against someone whose move goal is 400, they will get 125 points for 500 calories.
This can be good or bad. It can be like a golf handicap when two people who are at different levels of fitness are competing with each other. On the other hand, someone can set their move ring very low, let’s say 250 – so they will get 200 points for 500 calories, while you will only get 100 points for 500 calories if your move goal is set to 500.
Before you start a competition, you may want to check with your friend what their move goal is. Some people may want to compete only with others whose move goal is similar to their own.
Once the invitation to compete has been accepted, the competition will start the next day, and continue for seven days. Each day, both competitors will see how many points they got, and how many points their opponent got.
At the end of the competition, the one who earned the most points will be the winner. Both competitors will get an award showing that they completed a competition. The winner will get an additional award showing a victory in a competition. The competition awards show the number of times you received each one.
You can have competitions with more than one person at a time. Each competition is you against one other person.
Inviting a Friend to a Competition on the Apple Watch
You can only have a competition with someone who you are already sharing your activity with. To share your activity with a friend, run the Activity app on the Apple Watch, and swipe to the left to see the Sharing screen. Scroll down and tap Invite a Friend.
If you haven’t set up sharing yet, you will see the following message on the Sharing screen: To start sharing your Activity, use the Activity app on your iPhone.
Once you have set up sharing in the Activity app on the iPhone you can invite a friend to share activity and to join a competition.
To start a competition on your Apple Watch:
- On the sharing screen, tap the name of the friend who you want to invite to compete with.
- Scroll down to the bottom of the screen and tap the Compete button to invite your friend to a competition.
- Then tap the Invite [Name] button to complete the invitation for the 7-day competition.
- Once your friend accepts your invitation, the competition will start the next day.
During each of the seven days of the competition, you each get one point for every percent you add to your rings. You can get a maximum of 600 points each day. Whoever has the most points at the end of the seven days is the winner of the competition.
If you want to check the status of your competition, on the sharing screen, tap on the friend you are competing against, and you’ll see a chart with your daily status. When the competition is complete, both competitors will get an award for completing the competition. The winner will get an additional award for winning the competition.
Inviting a Friend to a Competition on the iPhone
Run the Activity app on the iPhone, and tap Sharing in the bottom right corner. If you haven’t yet set up sharing, tap the Get Started button. Once you have set up sharing, you need to invite friends to Share Activity before you can compete with them.
To invite people to share activity with you, tap the + button in the upper right corner, and find friends who have an Apple Watch to share their activity data with you.
On the Sharing screen tap the Profile Icon at the top of the screen and you’ll see a list of the people who you are sharing activity data with.
To start a competition on your iPhone:
- Tap on the name of the person you want to compete with.
- Tap Compete with.
- Tap Invite to invite that person to a 7-day competition.
Once your invitation has been accepted, the competition will start the following day.
When the competition is complete, both competitors will get an award for completing the competition. The winner will get an additional award for winning the competition.
Use Competitions to Help Get Yourself Into Better Shape
There’s no better way to motivate yourself and your friends than by having a “friendly” competition. Whether it’s your spouse, a friend or a relative, you can use competitions to help motivate both of you to get into better shape.
How Can I Learn More About the Activity App?
If you’re new to the Activity app, check out: Getting Started with the Activity App.
For an in-depth guide to the Activity App, check out: Inside the Activity App.
One of the best features of the iPhone integration with Apple Watch is the use of the native physical exercise application, Apple Fitness, which tracks the user’s daily physical activities, in addition to monitoring the achievement of their movement goals.
But there’s more: Apple Fitness also offers fun interactive features like sharing your activities with friends or family who have an Apple Watch. The movement goal tracking is listed in real-time and gives you a percentage of each so you can compare progress against your daily goal.
And what about competing with friends? Who burns the most calories per day? This is also possible: from the activity sharing function, you can compete against your friends, challenging them to see who can burn the most calories in a 7-day challenge.
See how to share your workouts with friends and compete with them in Apple Fitness using Apple Watch:
Share your workouts with friends on Apple Fitness
Step 1: Log into your iPhone’s Apple Fitness app and click the “Share” tab in the lower right corner of the screen.
Step 2: at the top right of the screen, click on the add icon.
Step 3: once again at the top right of the screen, click on the “+” icon.
Step 4: enter the names of people, such as friends and family, who own an Apple Watch and who you want to start sharing your Apple Fitness activities with. If iPhone automatically detects that contacts other than the ones you’ve already typed to add have an Apple Watch, these names will appear in light green in the suggestions below the field.
Step 5: you must wait until people accept the invitations you send to share your Apple Fitness activities with you.
Step 6: when accepting the sent invitations, the names of your friends will be listed in the “Share” tab, where you can follow the Movement Goals of each one of them in real time, besides comparing the percentage of the total reached, in a synchronized way, in any time of day.
Step 7: during the day, you can receive automatic notifications from your friends on the Apple Watch when they finish a workout or receive an Apple Fitness award.
Step 8: you’ll be able to interact and respond to these notifications quickly and simply, using the ready-made text suggestions that the Apple Watch makes available.
When responding to these notifications directly from your Apple Watch, they are sent by the Messaging app (iMessage), which attaches the Apple Fitness notification to your message so that the person can understand the context of what you sent.
Compete with friends at Apple Fitness
Step 1: to compete with friends, click on their name in the “Share” screen. The screen will open to your friend’s Apple Fitness profile. Scroll down the entire screen and find the “Compete” option.
Step 2: a window will open for you to confirm your challenge invitation.
Step 3: by sending the competition invitation, your friend will have 48 hours to accept and start the challenge. To check the rules, click on “Competition Rules”.
Step 4: a window will now open with the rules of your challenge.
Step 5: when you finish the competition with a friend, enter his profile to check the count of challenges against him.

Both HPB and Apple may also share your data and coded data with third parties that provide services for the LumiHealth programme.

By participating in activity challenges, wellness c hallenges , Just for You actions, and Answer This surveys, participants can earn up to $380 over two years in the form of HPB eVouchers.
What happens if I choose to withdraw from LumiHealth?
If you’d like to withdraw from LumiHealth, we’ll stop collecting all data within 24 hours. Any data already collected will remain as part of the programme. Do note that once you withdraw from LumiHealth programme, you can’t sign up for it again. Be sure to redeem your coins and use your HPB eVouchers before you withdraw, if applicable. You won’t be able to do this after you withdraw.

Whether you’ve just gotten an Apple Watch or have had one for a while and just haven’t tracked your steps closely before, it’s easy to do. Follow along for how to see steps on Apple Watch including distance, flights climbed, along with daily, monthly, and yearly trends. We’ll also look at how to make custom watch complications to track steps right on Apple Watch faces.
Once you’ve got your Apple Watch paired with your iPhone and it’s up and running, it will automatically track steps whenever you’re wearing it.
While you can’t set goals for step count specifically, you can adjust your Move goal. But even without goals for step progress, it’s easy to quickly view.
In the default Activity app on Apple Watch, you can see steps, distance, and flights climbed. And the Fitness app on iPhone shows your daily, monthly, and yearly distance trends in addition to all the data you can see on Apple Watch.
How to track steps on Apple Watch
- Open the Activity app on Apple Watch
- Swipe down or scroll down with the Digital Crown
- Your daily steps, distance, and flights climbed will appear at the bottom
- You can also swipe down further and tap Weekly Summaryfor more data
- To see steps and related Activity data for another day, you’ll need to use the Fitness app on iPhone (walkthrough below)
And if you prefer to see your step count right on your Apple Watch face, check out our walkthrough on that process:
How to track Apple Watch steps on iPhone
- Open the Fitness app (called Activity appin iOS 14.1 and earlier)
- Choose the Summary tab (Trends tab in iOS 14.1 and earlier)
- Swipe down to see your Trends with Distance walked/run and more
- Tap Show More next to Trends to see more data
Here’s how it looks in iOS 14.2 and later:
Here’s how the process looks in iOS 14.1 and earlier:
As shown above, Trends show you if your Move, Exercise, and Distance activity is on the upswing or downswing. Tap one of them to see daily, monthly, and yearly data.
Keep in mind your data between Apple Watch and iPhone won’t always been exactly in sync. But after a few minutes of fresh activity, your iPhone should match up with your watch.
The one caveat will be if you take your Apple Watch off and have your iPhone on you and do a decent amount of walking or running. In that case, the Health app on iPhone will show more steps than in the Activity app that’s pulling from Apple Watch data.

There are plenty of reasons for putting on weight. Maybe you sit at a desk each day and barely move from 9 to 5. Perhaps you’re taking a medication that causes hormone imbalances and weight gain. Maybe you’re not very good at controlling how much you eat, or what you’re eating. It’s okay to put on weight, and as long as your doctor says you’re healthy, then that’s all that really matters. But if you do want to lose a few extra pounds, there are new ways to allow you to regain control.
No matter what the reason is for your weight gain, it’s important to know first and foremost that the only proven way to manage your weight involves exercising more and consuming fewer calories. And you’ll need help to do it.
Keep in mind though, losing weight isn’t easy. It took time to put the weight on, and it will take even more time to burn it off.
But luckily in 2020 and beyond, there are a plethora of tools to make losing weight, dare I say, easier? If you’re ready to lose weight and stay on track, you’ll need a few things. Continue reading to get started.
What You’ll Need to Get Started
- An Apple Watch.
- An iPhone.
- A calorie counting app.
- And a smart scale.
I lost 25lbs in just a few months using these four tools because they work as a system — more on that below.
How You Can Lose Weight with an Apple Watch and an iPhone
These devices are critical parts of your weight loss journey. With an Apple Watch and an iPhone, you’ll be able to record your workouts, see how many calories you’ve burned each day, check Activity Trends (comparing your current activity vs. past activity), and much more.
You’ll receive alerts on your Apple Watch when you need to stand or move and you’ll also be notified when you’ve hit your Activity Goals for the day.
>> Pay attention to these alerts and execute your best effort to hit your Activity Goals each day. Your Apple Watch will help to keep you motivated and on track.
Speaking of motivation, Apple Watch Activity Competitions allow you to compete with friends who wear an Apple Watch.
- Each day you’ll work to earn a maximum of 600 Activity points in an Activity Competition.
- Whoever collects the most points at the end of the week wins a Competition Award.
Sure, the prize isn’t cash or a vacation, but you’ll soon realize that trying to earn bragging rights will get you off the couch and on the treadmill more and more often.
How to Start an Apple Watch Activity Competition
- Open the Activity app on your Apple Watch or iPhone.
- Find the Sharing tab by swiping on your Apple Watch, or by pressing the Sharing icon at the bottom of your iPhone’s Activity app.
- Tap on the friend you’d like to compete with and press Compete.
If you don’t have any friends to compete with, press the + button at the top of the Activity app on your iPhone. Your iPhone should auto-populate your friends who own Apple Watches, from there you can choose which friends you’d like to add.
>> Which Apple Watch is best? The Apple Watch Series 5 is perfect for workouts because its Always-on Display allows you to glance at your workout progress without ever raising your wrist – and that comes in handy more often than you’d think. Also, its new and improved heart rate sensor throws fewer errors than my Apple Watch Series 3 did.
Use a Calorie Counting App
MyFitnessPal is another vital element of weight loss success. Of course, there are other options out there for counting calories; but, MyFitnessPal is the most popular and features a massive database of crowdsourced and verified meals with respective nutritional information.
MyFitnessPal integrates perfectly with your Apple Watch, allowing your Activities to sync seamlessly to the app. Why does that matter, you ask?
Well, MyFitnessPal takes into account the Active Calories that you’ve burned during your workouts and reallots them to your daily calorie goal (meaning that you can eat a little more).
This way, you can see that you aren’t consuming more calories than you’re burning throughout the day. Keeping this balance is a guaranteed recipe for shedding unwanted pounds.
>> You should lose about a pound of fat for every 3,500 excess calories that you burn.
To automatically import your Workout data to MyFitnessPal, you’ll want to allow MyFitnessPal to read workout data from your iPhone’s Health app.
- Tap Settings.
- Tap Health.
- Tap Data Access & Devices.
- Tap MyFitnessPal.
- Tap Turn All Categories On.
Finally, Use a Smart Scale
Smart scales are one of my favorite inventions in recent memory. Do you want your scale to track your progress for you and input all of that data into easy-to-read graphs? Of course, you do!
Smart scales make tracking your weight, BMI, body fat percentage, and more incredibly easy. All of this data is uploaded to your iPhone over Wi-Fi automatically.
I use the QardioBase 2 smart scale, and it’s fantastic. The app allows you to see at a glance how much weight you’ve lost (or gained) over the last seven days, your BMI, and whether it’s in a healthy range or not, muscle mass, body fat, and more.
The Qardio app also allows you to set smart goals to help you lose a healthy amount of weight over a set amount of time.
A smart scale will help you stay motivated and on track every day.
There are plenty of cheaper smart scales available on the market, but I can vouch for the QardioBase’s quality and effectiveness. It is more expensive than other options, but it was worth every single penny.
As mentioned previously, losing weight isn’t easy. It’s going to take a lot of work and determination. But with some help, increasing your motivation, controlling your eating, and tracking your progress can result in measurable and undeniable success.
Maintaining a healthy weight can boost your mood, health and happiness. Remember, it’s okay to put on weight – but if you’re not happy with your current weight, seeing results in the mirror, inside of your Activity app, and on your smart scale will help you to finally lose the extra weight and keep it off for good.

For example, one brand of bread may be graded with a C- due to refined flour, while another type of bread may be graded at an A- for including whole wheat flour. Social fitness apps are one of the best ways to stay accountable. Here are the best social fitness apps to work out with friends.
Over and over again, research has shown that one of the best ways to stick to your workout routine is by involving other people. Having friends, family members, or complete strangers encourage you as you work out can help you meet your goals, and even exceed them.
Social fitness apps are one of the best ways to do this, but you need to find the one that works best for you. So, in this article, we’ve listed the best social fitness apps to work out with friends. You’re bound to find one that helps you achieve your fitness goals.
1. Fitbit
Image Gallery (3 Images)
Fitbit is one of the most widely-used social fitness apps. Most users pair it with their favorite Fitbit tracker, as these trackers automatically log stats, such as steps taken, different activity levels, and stairs climbed.
However, you don’t technically have to own a Fitbit tracker to use the app, as most smartphones have a pedometer feature that Fitbit can use to track your steps. The only downside is that you’ll have to manually enter any other exercises you do.
Fitbit is also a great way to improve your fitness while competing against others. Once you connect with your friends and family on the app, you can compete to have the most steps during the week. Plus, Fitbit has plenty of fitness challenges to do with friends and family that will motivate you to get fit.
On Fitbit’s Community page, you can join fitness groups that pertain to specific activities, like running, hiking, and swimming. People from all over the world can post images of their latest workouts, which should inspire you even more.

2. Nike Run Club

Nike Run Club is packed with features that can improve your workout sessions. Not only does it track stats from your runs and encourage you to complete challenges, but it also has a coaching feature that leads you through a targeted program for specific race distances and running levels.
The social aspect of the Nike Run Club app is integral to its design. It allows you to share the completion of your runs to the social media network of your choice. An in-app camera also lets you share photos without leaving the app. You can even get “cheers” from your Nike Run Club friends, which triggers a cheering sound that you’ll hear through your headphones.
If you want to connect with other runners in person, you can use the app to find and partake in nearby running events. The more you exercise, the more in-app achievements you’ll get to show off.
Nike Run Club is compatible with the Apple Watch, as well as Android wearables. That said, it’s definitely one of the best fitness apps for Apple Watch, and most Android fitness devices.

3. PumpUp

Apps such as PumpUp are designed specifically for those who love talking about their workouts on social media. Although it’s marketed towards women, plenty of men use the app too. The app tracks your exercise, and lets you post photos with descriptions to share with your followers.
PumpUp’s interface resembles Instagram in both its appearance and functionality. You have access to the feed of people you follow, along with feeds for the latest and most popular posts. Most posts show a user’s progress, while others have to do with healthy eating. Either way, PumpUp can inspire you to get fit alongside the thousands of other users on the app.
PumpUp isn’t just all about sharing your ventures in fitness. It, additionally, helps you stay active while you connect, as it comes with a variety of guided workouts that you can try. Each workout has a specific theme. With full-body, high-intensity, strength-training, abs, and treadmill workouts at your disposal, you’ll likely find a routine that works for you.
The premium version of the app gives you access to a larger selection of workouts, but it’s rather expensive. Despite this, PumpUp is still a great choice if you love using social media to connect, and are interested in sharing your fitness activities with like-minded groups.

First off, we’re not here to encourage you to cheat with your Activity goals. A major intent of the activity goals and rings is to help you to live a healthy lifestyle. You should always do your best to close your rings yourself each day. Even though there are times when this feat can seem impossible.
But what happens if you forget to strap on your Apple Watch before your activity or what if the battery is dead and you don’t have time to wait for it to charge before your workout? The activity you’re going to perform might be the seal to the deal for closing one or more of those rings and now you’re going to miss it.
As another example, maybe you simply want to close out your goals for the day to beat your friend in that friendly competition you’ve been sharing Activity data with (yes, this one really is cheating).
Whatever the reason, if you want to close your move, exercise, and stand rings on Apple Watch manually, it can be done and here’s how.
Being familiar with the goals
Knowing what each ring requires is key to manually closing them.
- Move: The Move ring fills in as you burn calories each day. This is based on the goal for the number of calories that you set up.
- Exercise: The Exercise ring expects you to exercise for at least 30 minutes per day and is the same for everyone.
- Stand: The Stand ring wants you to stand for at least one minute during 12 different hours in the day and is also the same for everybody.
Setting up a workout
Open the Health app on your iPhone and get ready to create a fake workout.
1) Tap the Health Data tab.
2) Select Activity.
3) Choose Workouts.
4) Tap the plus sign on the top right to add a Workout.
Note: You may have other ways to access the Workouts area of the app. Just navigate to the spot where you can create a workout.
1) On the Workout setup screen, start by selecting the Activity Type at the top. You can choose from a variety of workout options from American football to kickboxing to yoga. The important part is that you choose an activity that includes kilocalories (active calories), distance, or both per the ring(s) you want to close.
2) After you pick an Activity type, add the number of kilocalories and/or the distance by typing it in.
3) Select the Starts and Ends times by tapping those sections. This is especially important for filling your Exercise ring.
4) Tap Add.
Give your Apple Watch and Activity app a few minutes to update with the information.
Examples
If the reason you’re manually closing your goal for the day is because you didn’t wear your Apple Watch, then you could enter the numbers and amounts for what you know your activity would work on. For instance, if you run for 30 minutes per day and usually burn 200 calories and that’s all you need to fill your ring, then just enter that data.
On the other hand, if you don’t know the details or are just trying to close your rings in a hurry, you can go overboard to make sure they close.
Here is a workout for American Football, burning 2,000 calories, with a distance of 100 miles, for almost 12 hours. Boom, rings full!
Deleting the cheating
If you change your mind about the fake workout you set up, you can get rid of it along with its data. Head back to that workout in the Health app.
1) Tap the Health Data tab.
2) Select Activity.
3) Choose Workouts.
4) Select Show All Data.
5) Tap Edit.
6) Tap the minus sign next to the workout and then Delete when it appears.
7) In the pop-up at the bottom, select Delete Workout & Data.
8) Tap Done and then exit the screen or close the app.
As with adding the workout manually, it may take a minute or so for your Activity app and Apple Watch to update.
Also, keep in mind that depending on the Activity Type you choose, you may have to adjust other areas. For instance, with the American football example above, you may have to delete the data from the Exercise Minutes section as well.
So, just check the sections and your rings once you delete the workout for any remaining data. It’s definitely more work to delete the cheat than to create it. So, keep that in mind.
Wrapping it up
Now that you know how to manually close your move, exercise, and stand Activity rings, are you going to? Has there ever been a time when you wanted to close one or more of your rings without doing any activity?
