Lacks Native Support/ Touch Screen

For me the only controllers I own are some Xbox controllers. The problem is the lack of support for touch screen. I used to play a lot of touch screen games when I was younger. Now that I’m older; I’m fine playing them casually in another room. However, when trying to play games I found myself having no easy native controls. With me having to mingle with each game. This app works perfectly. If you have good internet and a good computer. The result is very visually appeasing with close to no lag. To me steam should have built some more features. Like remote using of the PC. Like being able to use mouse and keyboard mode on the computer with steam minimized. You are able to do this as I clicked out of the game and had remote access of the PC. Additionally PC remote controls like turn on from sleep or turn off. I’m aware that other programs have these capabilities; Integration of these services with steam link would be a very impressive way to get people using the app. Overall very satisfied. Would recommend to a friend.

Good thing this isn’t perfect

So in the last year I have found myself hopelessly addicted to a little pc game called Kenshi, it quickly surpassed all other titles in total play hours. I came across the steam link app and thought “why not let this game run my life completely, even when I can’t be around my laptop? I surely have nothing better to do.” So I set out to get this working. For those who don’t know Kenshi is a game you can essentially play on pause so perfectly suited to this very high latency format. It was about two days of being impressed by how nicely their editor lets you set up a control scheme, triple checking that I had saved it in every way I could think, and finding my setup gone on returning to the app before… Some glorious serendipity of overlapping bugs allowed me to recall my settings! I was off! Also thrilled to find that it is workable even streaming across town over cell. In fact performance seems inconsistent no mater what network setup I’ve tried, even with a cable in the computer sitting next to the router. However, it has always worked well enough to get my fix in various levels of blurriness. Unfortunately the app also crashes when taken out of focus and sometimes randomly. But still, pretty wild the ways we can waste our time these days, this must be meta. .? Keep trying valve, you are somewhat appreciated. Ken heads check my layout, I think it’s the only one

amazing but just needs 2 things

Steam link is just absolutely great and i love it so much!! im able to play The Forest and Friday The 13th and its just so amazing but theres just one problem. i am unable to shift/Run when i play with my buttons on screen so it would be great if there was a button or maybe having to double tap and hold the joystick and is it possible for us to be able to play with our laptop offline and maybe being really really really far apart from our laptop because something like that would be really helpful when trying to play from another location on your phone instead of having to play while your at home 🏡 and okay now this will be the last thing i promise haha but um is there any possible way that the buttons on the controller can be customized in their size because if i have a small phone i wanna make sure i can see a lot of the screen and sometimes some buttons just cover most of the screen so if you guys could cover these things it would be amazing. Do you long for a big-screen gaming experience, but without the hassle of running video cables between your gaming PC and a far-away TV? Good news! The Steam Link app allows you to do just that.

While Steam Link initially required dedicated hardware, Valve has since made the feature available on various other platforms—including the Apple TV.

So, here’s how you can stream PC games to your Apple TV using the Steam Link app.

How Does Steam Link Work?

In a nutshell, Steam Link encodes a live video stream of your game on the host PC and transmits it to the app. This allows your gaming computer to do the heavy lifting, while the TV or mobile device you use only needs to output a video and audio feed.

The best part is that Steam Link is completely free to use, whether the games you want to play are available on Steam or not.

To begin streaming your games to an Apple TV, all you need to do is connect a compatible computer and configure the Steam Link app.

Connecting a Controller in Apple’s tvOS

Unlike Android, Apple’s tvOS and iOS platforms only support a handful of controllers. This includes popular console controllers and exclusively made for iOS (MFi) gamepads, but not options like Nintendo’s Switch Pro controller.

Nevertheless, as long as your Apple TV is running tvOS 13 or higher, you can pair a DualShock 4 or Xbox One controller directly for use within Steam Link. For the DualSense and Xbox Series X controllers to work, you’ll need tvOS 14.5.

If you’re stuck on an older version of tvOS, your choices are somewhat limited: only the Steam Controller and Apple-approved MFi controllers will work.

Instructions for connecting your input method of choice to the Apple TV wirelessly can vary depending on the controller in question. However, all of them connect via a Bluetooth connection.

• On your Apple TV, navigate to Settings, then Remotes & Devices, and finally Bluetooth. Next, enter pairing mode on your controller.
• DualShock 4: Simultaneously press the PS logo and Share button for a few seconds until the light bar flashes.
• Xbox controllers: Turn the controller on by tapping the Xbox logo. Then, press and hold the Connect button for a few seconds.
• Steam Controller: Since Steam Controllers did not ship with Bluetooth functionality enabled from the factory, you’ll first need to update your controller’s firmware by following this support article. While a bit long-winded, this is only a one-time process. Once completed, enter pairing mode by pressing the Steam logo and Y button for a few seconds.

For other controllers, consult the manual or manufacturer’s instructions.

Once your controller is in its pairing mode, select it on your Apple TV to complete the pairing process. And that’s it! Your controller should now automatically connect to the Apple TV every time it is turned on.

If your controller is unsupported and the Apple TV is in the same room as your host PC, a potential workaround is to connect the controller directly to the computer. This approach has the benefit of reduced latency since the Apple TV is not tasked with forwarding controller input to the host PC.

Getting Steam Link up and Running

Now that you’ve successfully connected your controller, proceed to the Apple TV’s App Store to install the Steam Link app. Before opening the app, ensure that both the host PC and Apple TV are on the same network.

The app may prompt you to connect a controller. Since we’ve already completed this step, you can skip it.

Next, the app will automatically try to look for computers on your network.

After a few seconds, your PC should show up. If not, ensure that Steam is open and hit Rescan. If the auto-detection continues to fail, you can also connect manually by clicking on Other Computer.

Otherwise, select your host PC from the list to continue. The screen will then display a four-digit PIN that you need to enter on your computer. This is to prevent unauthorized people from connecting to your machine.

A pop-up should appear simultaneously on your PC. Enter the PIN to complete the pairing process.

Next, the app will run a series of tests to determine the quality and speed of your network. Depending on these two factors, Steam Link will automatically set a resolution and frame rate for the game stream. However, you can manually change this later, depending on your preference.

With the initial setup out of the way, all that’s left to do is play some games. Click on the Start Playing button to start the stream.

Depending on the operating system installed on your computer, you may be prompted to install additional audio driver software before you can start streaming. Simply follow the instructions on your computer.

Steam Link opens Big Picture Mode by default. While you cannot access the store to purchase games on Apple’s platforms, you can play any game from your library. To end the stream, click on the power button located in the top right corner of the interface, then select Stop Streaming.

If your stream is choppy or looks blocky, head back to the app’s main menu and navigate to the Settings menu. Under the Streaming tab, you can switch between various quality and frame rate options. If you’re using an Ethernet connection, you should have sufficient bandwidth headroom to max out both of these settings.

Improving Your Experience With Steam Link

As with any game streaming service, the most prominent bottleneck is likely your home network. Since the Steam Link app receives a compressed video signal of your game, it requires a considerable amount of network bandwidth.

To get the best performance out of your Steam Link experience then, you might want to connect your computer and router directly via an Ethernet cable. You can even go one step further and connect the Apple TV via a wired connection.

If your router is far from both the computer and Apple TV, you can use Wi-Fi as long as it is a 5 GHz connection. Most modern routers should support this feature, so consult the manufacturer’s website.

Another solid option would be to use a Powerline adapter, which uses your home’s power lines to carry data. This solution works perfectly over longer distances too. This means that Powerline can extend your home network’s coverage to locations without an existing Ethernet or Wi-Fi connection. If you’re unable to run network cabling throughout your home or are renting, you may find this approach the cleanest.

If you’d like to dig deeper into your stream’s actual performance metrics, enable the Performance Overlay under Settings > Streaming. This will allow you to check for abnormalities such as low network speeds and high latency.

Many Linux operating systems rely on GNOME, but it’s worth giving KDE a try because it might just become your favorite Linux desktop.

Step One: Connect a Controller in Apple’s tvOS

Before you install the Steam Link app, the first thing you need to do is connect a controller to your Apple TV. The tvOS and iOS platforms only support a few controllers, though, such as console controllers made for iOS. Apple TV does not support controllers like the Nintendo Switch Pro one. But as long as your Apple TV is running tvOS 13 or higher, you can pair an Xbox controller or a DualShock 4 controller directly. If you want to use Xbox Series X and DualSense controllers, you will need tvOS 14.5. If you have an older version of tvOS, only Apple-approved MFi controllers and the Steam controller will work. The exact instructions for connecting your controller of choice depend on the specific controller you use, but every controller is connected via Bluetooth. So, get started by navigating to the Apple TV “Settings,” choosing “Remotes & Devices,” and then “Bluetooth.” Then enter the pairing mode on your controller.

Step Two: Get Steam Link Up and Running

Once you have connected your controller, visit the Apple TV App Store and install Steam Link. Before you open the app, make sure your Apple TV and host PC are on the same network. The app will automatically look for computers on the network, and after a few seconds, your host PC should show up. If it does not, ensure Steam Link is open and hit “Rescan.” All being well, select your host PC from the list. You will then need to enter a four-digit PIN to prevent unauthorized people from connecting. After you have entered the PIN, the Steam Link app will perform various tests to determine the speed and quality of the network. Step Three: Start Streaming Games

You have now completed all the stages of the initial setup, although depending on the operating system you have installed on your PC, you could be prompted to install additional audio driver software before you can begin streaming games. If that is the case, it is as simple as following the instructions that appear on your computer screen. Once everything is prepared, the game on your PC can show up on your Apple TV. All you have to do is click on “Start” to begin the stream. Simple!

The app was originally intended to be released last year, but Apple banned the app from the App Store because it did not follow the rules. Now the app is returning to the iPhone, iPad and Apple TV almost exactly a year later.

With Steam Link you stream games over your network from your PC to your iDevice, so you can play games with a linked controller or the touchscreen that would normally never run on an iPhone or iPad. Because the game runs via a stream from your PC, you can play graphics-heavy games that would otherwise only be playable on a PC.

There are a number of conditions to use the Steam Link app:

1. Your iPhone or iPad must be running on iOS 10 or higher;
2. There must be a computer on your network that is running Steam on Windows, macOS or Linux;
3. The iOS device must be on the same network as the computer with Steam.

If you meet the above list, you can connect your iPhone or iPad to Steam on your PC using the step-by-step plan below. Before you start, turn on your computer and start up Steam.

The steps below can also be used if you use the app on an Apple TV. Keep in mind that you need a controller, as the touchscreen option is not available here

This is how you set up Steam Link on your iPhone and iPad

1. Open the Steam Link app on your iPhone or iPad;
2. Choose whether you want to pair a Bluetooth controller or use the touchscreen control;
3. Search for the computer with Steam on your network;
4. A PIN will appear on your iPhone screen. Enter this numeric code on your PC in the window that appears;
5. Wait for the network test to complete;
6. Press ‘Stream’;
7. Install any necessary plugins on your computer.

Test: That’s how well streaming games to iOS works

Once you’ve completed the steps above, you can choose a game from your Steam library and start playing. We have already tested Steam Link with various games and are positively surprised with the result. Games start quickly and the connection is stable. This allows you to play games like Borderlands 2 and Dark Souls 3 smoothly on your iPad or iPhone.

The only thing that (as expected) makes it almost impossible to play PC games properly is the controls on the touchscreen. Therefore, we recommend that everyone use a Steam or bluetooth controller if you plan to play a game this way on a regular basis. Depending on your internet connection, this is now possible with Steam Link.

Almost two years after being released for iOS and tvOS, the official Steam Link client is finally available for Mac users through the Mac App Store. With Steam Link, Steam players can use a computer as a host to stream and play games on any device.

Back in 2018, Steam Link was rejected on the App Store due to Apple’s guidelines that prohibited streaming games on iOS. However, as the app does not offer a standalone library and relies on a computer, the company allowed it on the App Store a year later after working together with Valve on an update in compliance with the store’s guidelines.

As noted by users on Reddit, Valve has now quietly released a macOS version of Steam Link. That means Mac users can now install the app to stream Steam games from another computer, just as was already possible with the iPhone, iPad, and Apple TV.

Steam Link is designed to take advantage of the horsepower you already have in your home, streaming from your current gaming computer by mirroring its experience to your device. Video and audio data is sent from your computer to the Steam Link, while your controller input is sent back in real time. Virtually every game that your computer runs can be played on your device using Steam Link.

According to Valve, the app works best over an Ethernet or 5GHz network connection and requires a Mac running macOS High Sierra 10.13 or later. Both computers must be connected to the same local network in order to run Steam Link.

Valve’s Steam Link app is now available on iOS devices and the Apple TV, almost a year after Apple initially rejected it for “business conflicts.” Steam Link allows you to beam your existing library of PC games to other devices on the same network; the app is Valve’s replacement for a now-discontinued streaming box that carried the same name.

The news comes days after the Supreme Court ruled that Apple must face an antitrust lawsuit related to alleged monopolistic practices around the App Store. It’s notable, however, that the new iOS Steam Link app doesn’t allow users to purchase games from the Steam store, unlike on Android.

How to beam Steam games to any room of your house

Banning an app that streamed games that had already been purchased on another platform seemed hard to justify even within the scope of Apple’s App Store rules, especially after those rules were updated specifically to accommodate similar remote mirroring apps last summer. Valve removed the store functionality in Steam Link betas back in June, however, so it’s unclear why it took so long for Apple to approve the app.

How to play your PC games with Steam Link on Android, iPad and iPhone

Steam Link is the platform that allows us stream the games we have on the computer to mobile devices with Android and recently also with iOS. Video game streaming is one of the trends this year and the big brands are joining it, from Microsoft with Project xCloud, Sony with PS4 Remote Play, Apple Arcade or Google Stadia. Also Valve, which since last year is compatible with tablets, smartphones and even televisions.

Here we explain how Steam Link works and how to configure it on Android and iOS to play the Steam games that we have already purchased on the PC on your mobile or tablet. IPhone users have not had access to Steam Link until a few days ago, when the AppStore has finally decided to accept the arrival of the application. Valve and Apple have finally reached an agreement and about a year later, Steam Link is now downloadable on iOS and tvOS.

To be able to use Steam Link on iOS, the method is very similar to that of Android. The steps are equivalent and we will also need a PC turned on and connected to the same network.

The requirements are slightly different. It will take a iPhone updated to iOS 11 or later and have a free memory of 29.8 MB.

Valve recommends having a good connection and use 5GHz connections for better performance in the app.

In the case of the iOS application and unlike Android, Big Picture mode is a specialized version without access to the Steam store. As it is a remote access, users could buy new games in the Steam store without giving commission to Apple and hence the possibility of buying new games does not appear.

How to play on iPad with Steam Link

In the same way as on the iPhone, to play Steam games on the iPad we will need to have access to iOS 11 or higher and install the Steam Link application from the AppStore.

It is recommended to have a bluetooth remote control to be able to have physical buttons. Nevertheless, Steam Link supports touch controls on the iOS interface.

Steam users have been able to stream games from within the Steam Mac app for sometime. The Steam Link app allows you to play your Steam games across all your computers. Just pair an MFI or Steam controller to your Mac, connect to a computer running Steam on the same local network, and start playing your existing Steam games.

To run Steam Link, users must have a Mac running macOS 10.13 or higher and another Windows, Mac, or Linux computer running Steam. Additionally, both computers must be on the same local network. Steam Link for macOS is available on the Mac App Store.

И вот мы в библиотеке Steam, в телевизионном режиме Big Picture. Вот вам и виртуальный джойстик, знакомые кнопки Xbox-овского геймпада и сопроводительные элементы интерфейса. На iPhone всё жутко нагромождено! На iPad картинка наверняка будет лучше. Тем не менее, рекомендация по поводу полноценного геймпада всё ещё в силе.

Теперь ваше iOS-устройство — это замена контроллера, под которого заточен Big Picture, ориентироваться в собственной библиотеке, благодаря ему, очень удобно.

The next thing will be to connect our device, either a iPhone, iPad or Apple TV with our Steam. The purpose of the Steam Link was to stream a game directly from your Steam account to the connected screen. This allowed users to sit on their couch and play Steam games on their televisions, using their computer as a server to run the game.

But problems arose from the ill-fated Steam Controller, a device that just didn’t quite fit the needs of the user base. Even when other controllers could be used in lieu of the original, the Steam Link just did not perform as well as expected.

Unless users had significant bandwidth and a reliable WiFi connection, the majority of games experienced too much input lag to be playable.

Steam Link lives now lives on as an app on compatible televisions, mobile devices, and in the Raspberry Pi. As of last week, Steam Link is also now compatible with iOS and Apple TV.

How Steam Link Works

Apple initially refused to allow the Steam Link app on its devices, but their decision has since changed, most likely because users can’t purchase games through Steam Link any longer.

However, the Steam Link app is free and requires nothing more than a decent Internet connection to play your favorite games on your mobile device, even if you’re away from home.

• For the initial setup, you’ll need to be on your home network. Open Steam on your PC or Mac and look for the square icon with an up and down arrow in the top right corner.

• Once you’ve pressed this icon, open the Steam Link app on your iPhone, iPad, or Apple TV.
• You will be asked to pair a Bluetooth or controller or use Touch Controls. Choose the option you want.
• After this, you will be asked which computer you want to stream from. Select the system you wish to use, and you will be given a code on your mobile device.
• Enter this code on your selected computer.
• The mobile device will then proceed through a series of network tests to determine reliability at different speeds. Once the test has completed, Steam will inform you what bandwidth you can expect.

• After you’ve finished the test, you can start playing remotely. However, if any errors arise, you might be prompted to update your drivers. The process is simple and takes very little time.

Once you’ve set up Steam Link, you can stream your games no matter where you are. Stuck on a long bus commute? Sync your Bluetooth controller to your iPhone and start a round of Civilization VI.

Just make sure your computer at home is turned on and connected to the Internet and of course that Steam is turned on.

Valve has done a good job at smoothing out many of the issues that originally came with the Steam Link service. However, some types of games – most notably FPS and fighters – are still not recommended over a streaming service.

Input lag makes these games unplayable, and a streaming service will always have more noticeable lag than playing directly at the source. However, turn-based RPGs, real-time strategy games, and many other great titles are perfect for something like Steam Link.

Your Choice Of Controller

The Steam Link is no longer burdened by the Steam Controller, although the device is still compatible. There are a host of controllers you can use:

• DualShock 4.
• Xbox One.
• Xbox 360 Wireless Controller for Windows.
• Logitech Wireless Gamepad F710.
• Keyboard and Mouse.

There are still other controllers that can be used with a few tweaks and a bit of technical know-how, but these five choices are the main controllers on the market today. You can even use a standard Bluetooth controller made specifically for the iPhone if you wanted to, which is a great option for “on-the-go” gamers.

Give the Steam Link app a try and see how you like it. It grants the kind of portability that only console games have had until now.

Valve will release two new apps allowing users to stream games and movies on their phones and tablets.

In a press release today, Valve announced Steam Link and Steam Video apps would be released in the coming weeks.

The Steam Link app, slated to launch the week of May 21, allows users to stream their Steam library of games on Android and iOS-based devices.

This can be enabled by connecting a 5Ghz network or wired Ethernet to the Mac or PC host system, and then the content can be streamed to mobile, tablet, TV or Apple TV. Android access will initially be offered in beta.

The Steam Link App will feature support for the Steam Controller, MFI controllers, and more across both platforms.

Linux and SteamOS are also supported, per Ars Technica, along with keyboard, mouse controls and other compatible controllers.

Later this summer, the Steam Video app is targeted for release, allowing users to stream movies and shows available on Steam directly to their Android and iOS devices over Wi-Fi or LTE.

It will offer the ability to view content in both offline and streaming modes.

How to use the Steam Link App

The Steam Link App is available ( ) on multiple platforms. It is compatible with iPhone, iPad, Android, Apple TV, Samsung Smart TVs that run Tizen (models from 2016 only), TVs and set-top boxes that run Android TV and even with the Raspberry Pi (but only Pi 3 models, Pi 3+ and Pi 4).

The installation and configuration method is similar in all.

To use Steam Link, you need a Bluetooth controller, from the Steam Controller to those on the PS3, PS4, Xbox One or third parties, or a Bluetooth or wired keyboard and mouse, as long as your Samsung or Raspberry Pi TV has available USB ports. Touchscreen controls are available on iPhone, iPad and Android devices.

On Samsung TVs and the Raspberry Pi, you can also use the Xbox 360’s wireless controller, even if it doesn’t have Bluetooth; in this case, use of the Xbox 360 Wireless Game Receiver for Windows is mandatory. Simply connect the accessory via USB and turn on the controller, it will be recognized.

Finally, it is necessary that both the computer with Steam installed and the device on which the Steam Link app will run are on the same network.

The method for installing the software is as follows:

1. iPhone, Apple TV, Android and Android TV

4. The software will ask you to enter a code on the computer. Do this and confirm;
5. The connection will be completed, Steam Link will perform a network test and report the quality;
6. After that, Steam Link will open in the Big Picture interface.

3. Raspberry Pi

There are two ways to install Steam Link on Raspberry Pi 3, Pi 3+ or Pi 4. One is via Terminal, for those who use the micro-PC with Raspbian, and the other through Retropie. In both cases, it is mandatory that the operating system is running the Stretch version or later of Debian.

If you prefer to install via the Raspbian Terminal, do the following:

1. Open the Terminal, type the command
   sudo apt-get update and hit “Enter”;
2. Type the command
   sudo apt install steamlink and hit “Enter”;
3. Open Steam Link and click on “Get Started”;
4. Choose between pairing a Steam controller or another Bluetooth controller;
5. Steam Link will search for computers on the network that run Steam. Click on the desired one;
6. The software will ask you to enter a code on the computer. Do this and confirm;
7. The connection will be completed, Steam Link will perform a network test and report the quality;
8. Click on “Start playing”.

Steam Link installation on Retropie can be performed directly by the controller, without using a keyboard. Do the following:

1. With Retropie open, access the “Retropie” menu and then “Retropie Setup”;
2. In the settings, select “Update Retropie-Setup script”;
3. After the update, select “Manage packages”, “Manage experimental packages”;
4. In the list, locate and select the item “steamlink”;
5. Select “Install from binary”;
6. After the installation is complete, restart the Raspberry Pi;
7. After the reboot, Steam Link will be available in the “Ports” menu;
8. Perform the same steps as the method to configure from the Terminal,
   from item 3 onwards.

Now that iOS support is available, we took a look at the Steam Link app’s performance using an Apple TV 4K and iPhone XS Max.

Valve is helping to reduce the clutter on gamers’ desks by removing the need for the Steam Link box as the way to stream games on screens not directly connected to a PC.

Announced last week , the Valve Steam Link app is now available on Apple iOS devices, granting Steam users the ability to stream their game libraries directly to their Apple TV, iPhone, and iPad. In order to connect, users need to utilize a 5Ghz network or be connected via a wired ethernet connection. Additionally, the Steam Link is compatible with MFI controllers, as well as Valve’s Steam Controller.

Although mobile Steam Link support launched last year, there were certain “business conflicts” that prevented Apple devices from being supported, according to Valve. Those hurdles cut out a considerable portion of Steam users, who had to either continue using their Steam Link box (which was discontinued in November 2018) to stream to a non-mobile screen, or to simply not have the ability to stream at all.

Now that iOS support is available, we took a look at the Steam Link app’s performance using an Apple TV 4K and iPhone XS Max.

Setup

Setup for the Steam Link app is a breeze, regardless of which device you decide to stream to. Download and launch the app, and the on-screen directions will walk you through the setup, beginning with a note to make sure that your Steam instance is in Big Picture Mode and that your Bluetooth controller is paired with the computer that’s actually running Steam. Once paired, you’ll select your computer from the menu, followed by a prompt to enter a four-digit code on your PC in order to create the connection. After entering the code, a diagnostics test will run to determine your connection speed, which takes about 30 seconds. Once connected, Steam’s Big Picture Mode view will appear on your iOS device’s screen, allowing you to move freely through your library to pick the game you want to play.

Apple TV 4K

While there were no issues with initially connecting the Apple TV 4K to the PC, there were a few spotty moments of lag. This was likely due to the fact that my Apple TV is located in a different room than my gaming PC. Regardless, the non-laggy moments of playing games (which were Ultimate Chicken Horse and Grand Theft Auto V ) were just as responsive as if I were playing directly on my gaming PC.

iPhone XS Max

The iPhone XS Max had a similar experience as the Apple TV, but was played in the same room as the gaming PC (roughly 15-feet away from one another). No lag was experienced at all, with the exact same real-time responsiveness. The nice thing about playing on the iPhone is that the touchscreen can be used to navigate through Steam’s Big Picture Mode, instead of having to use the Steam Controller (which I am none too fond of).

Verdict

The Steam Link app provides a simple and straightforward experience for anyone hoping to play their Steam games from somewhere other than their computer desk. The setup was surprisingly easy; considerably easier than the setup process for the physical Steam Link box ever was. Just be mindful of the fact that you’ll probably have a much better experience if your device is in close proximity to your Apple TV (at least in the same room).

Although Valve has said that it will continue support for its physical device, feel free to use your old Steam Link box as a coaster or doorstop.

The game maker launched the app in May 2018, offering gamers the ability to sling their game library to an Android phone, tablet or TV or an iPhone, iPad or Apple TV , as long as they had a Steam host system connected to the same network as their device. Apple initially approved the app but changed its mind a few weeks later due to “business conflicts with app guidelines,” Valve said at the time.

Apple marketing chief Phil Schiller reportedly said in emails that the Valve app violated a number of the company’s guidelines and that the two companies were working to bring the app to the iOS platform.

A year later, the Steam Link app is officially available for download to iPhone, iPad and Apple TV.

The app requires devices to run iOS 11.0 or later and that they be connected to a host computer running Steam via a 5GHz network or wired Ethernet. The app features support for the Steam Controller and MFI controllers.

When Apple put the kibosh on Valve’s Steam Link app for iOS last week, many put it down to Apple’s unwillingness to embrace a little competition on its own platform.

However, judging by reported comments from Apple’s marketing boss Phil Schiller this weekend, there might be a way back for the platform.

In an alleged email sent to one Reddit user and received by multiple others, Schiller said it’s just a case of working out some kinks.

Schiller said he’d “love” for Steam Link to take its place on the App Store if Valve can fall into compliance with a “number of guidelines.”

The note read: “We care deeply about bringing great games to all of our users on the App Store We would love for Valve’s games and services to be on iOS and Apple TV.

“Unfortunately, the review team found that Valve’s Steam iOS app, as currently submitted, violates a number of guidelines around user-generated content, in-app purchases, content codes, etc. We’ve discussed these issues with Valve and will continue to work with them to help bring the Steam experience to iOS and Apple TV in a way that complies with the store’s guidelines,” the Apple executive added.

The Steam Link app, which is available on beta for Android and Android TV devices. It enables Steam users to stream their games to a Google-based device, so long as its connected to a PC running the Steam app.

The devices will need to be connected via 5GHz network or wired Ethernet to a host system (Mac or PC). However, so long as you tick that box, you’re good to go. Naturally, it’s compatible with the Steam controllers launched to play nice with the Steam Machines.

If you can remember back to this time last year, The Steam Link app had just been launched by Valve and roughly replicated the Steam Link hardware functionality on any connected PC, Mac or Android device – 5GHz Wi-Fi or wired Ethernet network required. Unfortunately for Valve and Apple iOS users, Apple dug in its heels and refused to distribute the Steam Link app via its App Store walled garden. Thus a large segment of the potential audience for streaming Steam PC games to devices was lopped off.

Fast forward to today and the Steam Link app is now available on the Apple App Store. It seems that Valve has solved the Apple App Store blockage by removing the ability to buy PC games direct from the app, you will still have to do that via the computer client, or via a web browser where you are logged in to your Steam account. If you search the App Store for Steam Link on your iOS device it might not be picked up, depending on your region, so it might be best to click the link provided on your iOS device, to grab the app today.

As a reminder, using the Steam Link app differs from ‘cloud gaming’ as it relies on your own Steam account being loaded with the games you wish to play, and the source PC being turned on and ready to game. The streaming app performs at its best when users are hooked-up to the same or via a very fast network connection.

In related news, Valve has updated the Steam Client Beta with a host of changes for PCs, Macs and Linux machines. Of particular note to Steam Link app users, Steam In-Home Streaming is experimentally available outside the home, according to the release notes. Furthermore, to match its new found scope, Steam In-Home Streaming has been renamed as ‘Steam Remote Play’.

Steam Link for iOS and Android was released last week, allowing users to stream games from a local desktop PC to their phone. We reviewed the Android version, and it’s an impressive app despite still being in beta. Apple has now removed Steam Link from the iOS and Apple TV stores, leaving Android as the only platform with the application.

In a public statement, Valve said Apple initially approved the app on May 7, but later rejected it due to ‘business conflicts with app guidelines’:

On Monday, May 7th, Apple approved the Steam Link app for release. On Weds, May 9th, Valve released news of the app. The following morning, Apple revoked its approval citing business conflicts with app guidelines that had allegedly not been realized by the original review team.

Valve appealed, explaining the Steam Link app simply functions as a LAN-based remote desktop similar to numerous remote desktop applications already available on the App Store. Ultimately, that appeal was denied leaving the Steam Link app for iOS blocked from release. The team here spent many hours on this project and the approval process, so we’re clearly disappointed. But we hope Apple will reconsider in the future.

Valve is hoping that the growing media attention around the removal will help change Apple’s mind. Some have speculated that Apple sees Steam Link as threatening to the App Store’s profits, as people could just play their existing Steam library instead of buying iOS games, but I’m not too sure about that. Not only do you need a decent network for Steam Link to work well, it also won’t function outside your home – where many people take their phones. Additionally, most major PC titles are not available on mobile platforms.

What is Steam Link?

The app enables users to pair an MFI or Steam controller to an iPhone, iPad, iPod touch or Apple TV, connect to a host computer running Steam via a 5Ghz network or ethernet cable, and start playing Steam games on their chosen Apple device.

According to Valve, the free app was originally approved for iOS release in May 2018, but shortly after the Steam maker publicly announced it, “Apple revoked its approval citing business conflicts with app guidelines that had allegedly not been realized by the original review team”.

Valve said at the time it hoped Apple would reconsider its decision, and it seemingly continued working on the app in a bid to make it more appealing to the platform holder, even reportedly removing the ability to directly purchase Steam products through the app itself. Instead, purchases must be made from the host computer paired to the Apple device.

Valve discontinued its physical Steam Link device last year. However, it remains in the hardware business with the upcoming release of Valve Index.

Pre-orders for the VR headset went live on May 1, with Valve saying it planned to start shipping “in limited numbers” by July 1 in the US and EU.

Como usar o Steam Link App

O Steam Link App está disponível () em várias plataformas. É compatível com iPhone, iPad, Android, Apple TV, Smart TVs da Samsung que rodam Tizen (apenas modelos a partir de 2016), TVs e set-top boxes que rodam Android TV e até com o Raspberry Pi (mas apenas modelos Pi 3, Pi 3+ e Pi 4).

Há duas formas de instalar o Steam Link no Raspberry Pi 3, Pi 3+ ou Pi 4. Uma delas é via Terminal, para quem usa o micro-PC com o Raspbian, e a outra através do Retropie. Em ambos os casos, é obrigatório que o sistema operacional esteja rodando a versão Stretch ou posterior do Debian.
