There are several reasons you may want to use a VPN on your Android TV box, but it’s not available as a stock option like it is in Android phones or tablets. Fortunately, there are a few ways around this.
If Your Provider Offers It: Use a Standalone VPN App
There are a few standalone VPN options available for Android TV, which should do the job—especially if the VPN you subscribe to already offers one of these choices.
That’s a simple solution: install the app, sign in, and boom—done.
If you’re not one of the lucky few whose VPN offers directly Android TV support, however, things are a little murkier. And for that, you’ll need to use OpenVPN.
For Everyone Else: How to Set up OpenVPN on Android TV
First off, you’ll need a VPN account. I’m using StrongVPN here, which I’ve found to be incredibly reliable and offer all the features that I personally want. If you’re looking for one to use, I recommend it.
You’ll need a few things on your Android TV, too, including the OpenVPN app (which you can get from the Play Store) and Google Chrome (which you’ll need to sideload after downloading from APK Mirror).
With everything installed and ready to go, fire up Chrome and log in to your VPN provider’s website. Since Chrome isn’t designed for Android TV, things can get a little bit weird with the inputs, and I also recommend using a Bluetooth keyboard to make quick work of inputting text.
You’ll need to download your configuration file, which will be in a different place on every VPN’s site. With StrongVPN, it’s in Customer Area > Setup Instructions.
If given the option, download the config file for Linux or Mac systems.
Note: If you just installed Chrome, you’ll need to grant it permission to write files to the system.
With the file downloaded, go and head fire up OpenVPN. This app isn’t really designed to be used with a non-touch interface, so it’s a little wonky to use with a remote or controller.
Using your Android TV’s remote (or game controller, if available), click on the little box with the down arrow in the upper right corner. This is the import button.
Select the configuration file you previously downloaded. After it loads, navigate over to the checkmark in the upper right corner and select it to save the config.
To enable your VPN, highlight the file you just imported and click on it.
It should prompt you to input your VPN’s username and password, so go ahead and do that.
Once everything is entered here, click OK. It should authenticate and connect.
From this point forward, you’ll need to jump back into the OpenVPN app to connect to or disconnect from your VPN. It’s a little out of the way, but it’s better than nothing.
Using a VPN with Your Android Smart TV
A smart TV is a television that is Internet-connected. It can also be referred to as a “connected tv,” and smart TVs are available on various platforms including Android. Since it’s connected to the Internet, a smart TV has access to a variety of services a normal TV does not. This access also comes with risks, however, so it’s essential you secure your connection. A VPN like VyprVPN is a great way to secure your connection and protect your smart TV. To set up a VPN on your Android TV, follow these steps:
- Visit the Google Play Store.
- Download and install VyprVPN for Android onto your Android TV.
- Enter your login credentials and click Connect.
- That’s it! Your android TV will be protected.
- You can alsodownload the APK from the VyprVPN website and sideload the app to your Android TV device.
What is the Best Way to Secure Your Android TV Box?
A VPN encrypts your Internet connection and enhances your online privacy and security on your smart TV, like your Android TV box. When your TV is connected to the Internet, it may pose risks to your privacy like your computer does. These can include hackers or snoops viewing your activity, or your ISP or service provider collecting information about your viewing habits or behavior. Using a VPN on your smart TV secures the connection greatly, enhancing privacy for the television. Using a VPN, like VyprVPN for Android TV, also provides other valuable benefits. It improves your streaming experience by offering enhanced speeds while you stream content, and defeats throttling performed by your ISP.

- VyprVPN Setup Guide for Android TV
Are you one of the millions of Android TV users? If your smart TV runs Android or you have an Android TV box, you can get a VPN to protect it. But how do you set up an Android TV VPN? That’s easy – just follow this guide.
How to set up a VPN on Android TV (box)?
It is easy to set up a VPN on an Android TV or Android TV box. As long as your chosen app is on the Google Play Store, you should have no issues with getting it to run. I’ll use Surfshark as an example.
Here’s how you do it:
- Find your VPN on the Google Play Store and install it.
- Open the VPN app, create an account or log in,
- Click “Connect” and that’s it!
Clicking “Connect” will connect you to the closest, fastest VPN server. If for any reason you want to connect to another country, then you can pick a location manually under the “ locations ” tab.
Disclaimer: Surfshark does not encourage using a VPN in any way that would potentially violate the law or Terms of Service of other service providers.
Yet this may not work for everyone. Your TV or box may be running an older version of Android – older than Android 5 (Lollipop) – or you may not find the app in the store. What can you do then? You can sideload the VPN on your device!
How to sideload a VPN on Android TV (box)
“Sideloading” is a term for installing an app that’s not available on the Google Play Store. Sideloading a VPN is more complicated than just getting it from the Store – but only by a little.
Keep in mind that you should be cautious when sideloading. These apps haven’t been tested by Google. Only use software from trusted providers.
You will need to download special configuration files before you can start working. They come from your VPN service provider. In this example, we’ll be using Surfshark VPN to show you how you can do it yourself.
- Log in to your Surfshark account on the website and download the configuration files . The website will recommend the files for the server closest to you.
- Extract the downloaded .zip files anywhere you want.
- On the Google Play Store, download and install the OpenVPN Connect client.
- Launch the OpenVPN Connect client and select the “OpenVPN profile” option.
- Click “menu” on the top left of the app.
- Navigate to the folder where you extracted the configuration files and click “Import.”
- Choose whatever “Title” you want.
- For credentials, enter the automatically generated credentials shown at the bottom of this page .
- After adding the profile, click on it to connect. If you get any trust prompts, accept them.
- The status should turn green after you establish a connection.
A secure VPN protection will keep your DNS and IP hidden. Check for DNS and IP leaks to find out if your data has been leaked . In any case, your connection should now be established, providing you with all the benefits of a VPN. Speaking of which, what are those benefits?
Do I need an Android TV VPN?
Whether you have an Android TV or an Android TV box, you need a VPN for your device. Here are the three main reasons why:
Stream privately and buffer-free
If you want to stream while staying secure and private, you have a right to do so. Keep your VPN on even when watching Netflix with your friends or watching Friends on Netflix alone. And if you’re worried about losing speed, just look for a provider with good server coverage and infrastructure ( like Surfshark ).
In some cases, a VPN can even improve your streaming speeds.
Bypass throttling
It’s not only hackers that you should be worried about. “ Internet throttling ” is when your Internet Service Provider (ISP) intentionally slows down your connection. They often do it when users stream video or download files. But a VPN can mask your internet activities. That way, the provider will not know when to throttle your connection, and you’ll be able to enjoy the full capacity of your internet.
Protect your devices
The “smart” part of your smart TV comes from the internet. However, that same internet connection opens up your devices to hackers and other threats. A VPN adds a good layer of protection to your TV.
Experience lag-free, safe streaming with a VPN
Android TV is a great choice when it comes to smart television. Yet making it even better is only three short steps away. Improve your experience by getting an Android TV VPN. Watch safely, watch privately!
Android TV is the best way to experience digital media on the big screen. The Android operating system is optimized for audio and video consumption on the big screen in Android TV. Many TVs ship with the Android TV OS running native on their hardware. You can also buy hardware that runs Android TV and hook it up to your existing TV. Since Android TV provides all of this content through an internet connection, you’ll want to consider getting a VPN for your TV to maximize your protection and the ability to get the content you want to watch. VPNs can run on Android TV just like they can run on your phone or computer. There are tons of different options when it comes to choosing a service, so this article will help you decide what service you need. VPNOverview is a website dedicated to thoroughly testing different VPN services in every type of situation. They go above and beyond to find the best VPN services and test all of their features. HereВ you’ll find some good and reliable VPN services for your Android TV.
The Advantage of a VPN on Your Android TV
Any device that is connected to the internet has a unique IP address that acts as your identity online. This unique identifier can tell a service where you’re connecting from and can be used by a service to filter traffic from specific countries. These are some of the ways that a VPN can be an advantage on Android TV.
Security:В Going without a VPN leaves your IP address exposed to many people with malicious intent. Even though you might not think about security when using Android TV, it’s just as important as ever. An exposed IP can leave your network open to DDOS attacks and more. Hiding your IP keeps your connection secure and hides your location as well.
Anonymity: When you use a VPN, none of your internet activities can be traced back to you or your location.
Freedom:В Many countries have restrictions of the type of services you’re allowed to use. If you’re in an unlucky country, you might not have access to Netflix, Hulu, or even YouTube. A VPN can bypass geographical restrictions to give you unfiltered access to the entire internet.

What Makes the Best VPN for Android TV Box
We looked under the hood of these VPNs to reveal their strengths (and weaknesses, if any). As you’ll notice, some of the VPNs are well-rounded, like ExpressVPN. Others dominated in areas such as speed, security or ability to bypass geoblocking. Here is our short list of the best VPN for Android TV.
- ExpressVPN — Lightning-fast speeds and ability to unlock streaming services
- NordVPN — Extensive VPN server network and solid security
- CyberGhost — Affordability and ability to unblock streaming services
- Surfshark — Unlimited simultaneous connections and affordability
- VyprVPN — Security and ease of use
Android TV boxes are vulnerable to the same cyber risks as other devices, like computers, smartphones and tablets. For this reason, the first thing you want to consider when picking a VPN is security and privacy. While not all of our picks earned a spot in the most secure VPN list, they’ve proved themselves reliable on this front.
Getting past geoblocking is another crucial factor. Your smart TV comes with a wide variety of video and entertainment apps preinstalled. Some apps, such as Netflix, hide the best content behind a wall of geoblocking, which limits your options. A VPN allows you to break through these walls to seize the apps’ full potential.
The VPN should be fast enough to support HD or 4K streaming and torrenting. Our top picks are some of the fastest VPNs and they deliver a great streaming, gaming and torrenting experience, devoid of buffering or lagging. Better yet, the services offer unlimited bandwidth, so you don’t have to worry about the amount of data you’re using as you stream videos.
The Top 5 VPNs for Android TV Box
Our top VPNs are easy to install on Android TV, plus they meet all requirements we discussed earlier. As we mentioned, ExpressVPN tops our list, so let’s jump right into it.
1. ExpressVPN
More details about ExpressVPN:
- Pricing: $8.32 per month on the annual plan
- Provider Website:
- Easy to use
- Lighting-fast VPN servers
- Unblocks all streaming platforms
- Pricey

ExpressVPN is the best VPN for Android TV box for many reasons, and its blazing-fast speed is one of them. The app causes no significant change in latency, upload or download speeds when connected. Fast speeds, coupled with unlimited bandwidth, give you the freedom to stream HD content without breaks or lags.
Beyond speed, ExpressVPN offers solid security and privacy. The app has a strict no-log policy and is based in the British Virgin Islands, which has excellent privacy laws. It guarantees watertight security and privacy to keep your data (such as IP address) and digital tracks private while streaming or sailing piratical waters.
Unlock Regional Content With ExpressVPN and Android TV Box
When it comes to streaming, ExpressVPN and Android TV are a match made in heaven. The TV box offers an easy way to access all popular streaming apps — like Netflix, Hulu, Amazon Prime Video, BBC iPlayer and Kodi — but most of them have georestricted content. ExpressVPN effectively bypasses geoblocks imposed by the streaming services, allowing you to access infinite streaming options.
ExpressVPN is a little more expensive than all the other services on the market. However, it’s well worth the money, considering its impressive feature set, performance and excellent customer support. ExpressVPN doesn’t offer a free plan, but it offers a 30-day money-back guarantee.
When you install a VPN on your Android TV you will gain access to more content online in a secure way. You can, for instance, watch movies that are only available outside your country. There a three ways to install a VPN on your Android TV:

We recommend using ExpressVPN for your Android TV, because it offers great speeds for streaming.

Android TV is a smart-TV platform designed by Google, which uses the Android operating system. You can watch movies and tv-shows, or listen to music, through various apps. You could, for instance, stream Spotify and Kodi. When you protect your Android TV with a VPN, your internet provider won’t be able to see what you watch. On top of that, you will get access to Netflix content that is only available in other countries. There are several ways to install a VPN on your Android TV. The easiest way to do this is to use a VPN app, but you could also manually install the VPN on a (virtual) router. This article will describe how to do this.
How Do I Install a VPN on my Android TV?
There are three different ways to install a VPN on your Android TV. The easiest way is by simply downloading an app from the Play Store. Sadly, not all VPN providers offer such an app. If that is the case, you can choose to install a VPN on your router or on a virtual router.
Installing a VPN on your Android TV: App in the Play Store
Many large VPN providers have their own software. This often means that they will also have an Android app available. If your provider has an app available in the Google Play Store you can install it on your Android TV. If you’re not sure about which VPN to go with, than you might want to scroll down to the section where we discuss the available options.
Below you can find a step-by-step guide to install a VPN on your Android TV by using an app in the Play Store:
- Go to your chosen VPN’s website, for instance ExpressVPN’s website, and create an account. Choose your subscription and method of payment and pick a secure password.
- Look for your providers VPN app in the App Store on your Android TV and download the VPN software.
- Open the app and log into your account, using the details from step one.
- The app is now ready to go. Choose the VPN server that you want to use. Consider that this choice also determines what content is available to you. Do you want access to the American Netflix? Then choose a server in the US.
- Turn on the VPN by pressing the ‘on’ button or click ‘connect’.
Your Android TV is now protected by the VPN. You can use the TV as you normally would, while enjoying the safety, anonymity, and access to blocked content!
Installing a VPN on your Android TV: VPN on Your Router
When a VPN is installed on your router, all of the devices that connect to the internet through that connection will be protected. Therefore, your Android TV will be too. If you want to do this, your router has to be suitable for this type of use.
Setting up a VPN on your router could prove to be somewhat technically challenging. You will have to change the firmware on your router to prepare it for use with a VPN. This is called flashing. You can install a VPN on your router by following the steps below:
- Check if your router is suitable for “flashing”. Read all about this in our article with the best VPN routers.
- Choose a VPN that works on a router, for instance ExpressVPN, and create an account.
- Change the firmware on your router and install a VPN on it. You can find an extended guide on how to do this in our article about installing a VPN on your router.
- Connect your Android TV (and any other device) to the Wi-Fi network of your flashed router. Your Android TV is now protected with a VPN.
Installing a VPN on your Android TV: VPN on a Virtual Router on your PC or Mac
If your router isn’t suitable for flashing you can also connect your Android TV to virtual router, which is basically a Wi-Fi hotpot, on your PC or Mac. If you install a VPN on this PC or Mac and connect your TV to it, your Android TV will also be protected. You can achieve this by following these steps:
- Install a VPN on your PC or Mac. This is very easy, since most VPN providers have easy installation wizards and simple guides.
- Create a Wi-Fi hotspot on your PC or Mac so your Android TV can connect to it.
- Connect your Android TV to this VPN-protected network on your PC or Mac.

ExpressVPN for Android TV: Streaming at Rapid Speeds
One of the best and most popular VPNs at the moment is ExpressVPN. This provider stands out when you look at streaming quality as well. ExpressVPN is very easy to use in combination with an Android TV because of its nifty Play Store app. With the ExpressVPN servers you will always be able to reach high speeds in the safest possible way. We have ranked ExpressVPN at the top of our list after researching the fastest VPN provider, which is perfect for streaming. If you use a slow VPN you will have to wait for a video to buffer, but this won’t happen with ExpressVPN. It will make sure that you can enjoy your Android TV without any interruptions.
ExpressVPN is also very secure. It uses the strongest types of encryption and doesn’t log anything. Their applications are available in several different languages. We have concluded that ExpressVPN is the best choice to safely stream any content on Hulu, Netflix, and other online platforms. Unblock geo-restricted content and increase privacy!
Android TV is portal to a variety of entertainment suites. You can use it to surf the internet, stream your favorite shows on different OTT platforms (Netflix, Hulu, Prime Video, etc.), listen to music, and even play games. Essentially, Android TV is a version of Google’s Android operating system that powers Android smartphones, but with a tailor-made user interface to offer better content discovery, voice integration, content aggregation, and a host of other functionalities to improve the experience on a TV set.
One of Android TV’s variations is the Android TV Box, which is basically a box (or set-top box) running Android TV that instantly transforms your regular TV into a smart TV running the Android operating system. So, if you’ve got an old TV at your home, you can use an Android TV Box to get smart functionalities on it.
Talking of functionalities, you get pretty much everything — except for a few features — with an Android TV Box that you get on a TV that runs Android TV natively. And, based on your box manufacturer and the hardware running under the hood, your experience and mileage can vary from box to box.

VPN on Android TV
Since Android TV utilizes an internet connection to offer all its functionalities, it is necessary to use a VPN to secure your connection from the outside world and protect your privacy. Not just that, with a VPN, you can also increase your entertainment options on OTT platforms by getting around geo-restrictions to unblock content available in other regions.
Installing and Setting Up a VPN on Android TV
As we’ve already mentioned, irrespective of whether you have an Android TV or a regular TV hooked up to an Android TV box, you get to enjoy pretty much all the functionalities of Google’s Android TV on either device.
One of these functionalities is the ability to install third-party apps using the Google Play Store. So now, similar to how you install apps on your Android phone, you can do the same using the Play Store on your Android TV. And that is exactly what we’ll be using to install a VPN service on our Android TV.
Step-1. Considering you are planning to use a paid VPN service, the first thing you need is a subscription to that service. If you already have one, proceed to the next step. However, if you don’t, visit your favorite VPN provider’s website, and from there, sign up for an account and get a subscription.
Step-2. On your Android TV, open Play Store and search for the VPN service provider — one you got a subscription for, in the previous step.
Step-3. Click on Install to download the app on your Android TV.
Step-4. Open the (VPN) app you just installed and sign in to your account.
Step-5. Your VPN app will now ask you to configure VPN on your Android TV. Depending on what client you use, the steps involved might be different. So, follow the on-screen instructions to navigate your way through the configuration process.
Using a VPN on Android TV
Once you have installed and set up your preferred VPN client on your Android TV or Android TV box, you are now ready to use it. In general, most VPN clients have a straightforward connection process: you open the app and click on the connect button to connect to a server automatically.
However, by default, most VPNs connect you to your nearest server location. While this works fine for regular use-cases, if you plan on bypassing geo-restrictions to access content in other countries, you need to manually select a server located in that region. You can do this by heading to the list of servers that your VPN provider offers and clicking on the one you want to connect to.
When connected, your traffic is then routed through an encrypted tunnel to protect your information on the internet. That way, you can browse the internet securely and also access geo-restricted content (websites, TV shows, movies, etc.).
Lastly, to disconnect VPN, simply tap on the connect button, and you should now be disconnected.
Best VPNs for Android TV
When it comes to selecting a VPN client, there are plenty of VPN services out there: each promising to offer some advantage over the other and claiming to be more secure. As a consequence of this variety, it becomes quite a task to determine the best VPN client for your needs. Add to this the security and privacy concerns caused due to the obscure privacy policies, and the process becomes even more daunting.
So, to help you with the selection process and narrow down your options, here are some of our picks for the best VPNs for Android TV:
1. ExpressVPN
Highlights: 3000+ servers in 90 countries, fast server speeds, 30-day money-back guarantee, and claimed zero-logs policy.

3. Surfshark VPN

To conclude, if you have an Android TV or an Android TV box hooked to your TV, you must definitely consider getting a VPN service to secure your activities online, and in turn, protect your identity.
Besides, as already mentioned, you can also get more out of a VPN than just protecting your privacy, like bypassing geo-restricted websites and watching TV shows and movies unavailable in your region. And, with our recommendations for the best VPN clients, along with the steps on how to install and set it up, you should be able to navigate your way through the entire process quickly.
для работы с сервисом VPNKI по протоколу OpenVPN
В нашем случае используется телевизор SONY на базе ОС Android TV
Google Play.
The popularity of streaming services has led many users to purchase brand new Smart TVs, which operate on a version of Android. In contrast, those who couldn’t afford it or saw no need for an upgrade simply opted for a Smart TV box. And while both groups reaped the benefits of a TV connected to the Internet, this came with risks to privacy and security. Even worse, Smart TVs, Smart TV boxes, and Internet of Things (IoT) devices are often high on the hacker’s list. Therefore, to protect every device connected to your network, you must learn how to add a VPN in Android TV. So, let’s demonstrate that.
1. Add a VPN to Android TV via an app
The most beginner-friendly way to add a VPN is by installing an application for Android TV, whether on the TV itself or the smart TV box. These are 2 ways to install an Android TV app:
1. From the Play Store
If your VPN provider has a dedicated VPN app on the Play Store, do the following:
- Open Google Play Store on your Android TV or the box.
- Search for your VPN provider’s app name and select the app from the search results.
- Tap on the Install button on the app page.
- Tap on Open.
- If prompted, enter your login credentials to sign in.
- You’ll get a “Connection request” prompt. Tap on OK.
- Select your location, configure settings if needed, and tap the Connect/power button.
2. Using app side-loading
Many VPN services avoid adding their VPN app to the Play Store. In most cases, either the app doesn’t meet the Play Store requirements, or the developers don’t want to pay Google a cut of their profits. In those cases, you must do the following:
- Visit the VPN provider’s website, and go to their Download section.
- Download the .apk file. The option is under “Android” and is commonly named Download APK.
- Transfer the .apk file to the storage of your Android TV or the box.
- Open the File Explorer/File Manager app.
- Navigate to the .apk file, tap to open it, and install the application.
- Follow steps 5, 6, and 7 above.
I can’t open/install the app. What do I do?
Most Android TVs enable protection against unverified apps by default. To disable it, you’ll have to look through options. Here’s how the process looks on our end:
- Android TV: Go to Settings, then find Security & Restrictions. Find an option named Unknown Sources and tap on it. Tap on OK/Allow.
- Android TV box: Tap on Settings, then go to Additional Settings. Select Safety & Privacy, then scroll down to tap on Device Administration. Toggle Allow Installation of Apps from Unknown Sources to on.
2. Configure VPN in Android TV settings
Although rare in Smart TVs, Android TV boxes often have a built-in VPN section that resembles that on Android smartphones. Before you start, you’ll need to generate a VPN configuration manually or copy/paste the one automatically generated for you. In both cases, you’ll have to sign in to your user account on the VPN service website or contact Customer Support. Here’s how the process looks on one of many Android TV boxes:
- Open Settings.
- Tap on More, then go to VPN.
- Tap the + icon, then enter the following information according to the VPN provider’s instructions:
- Name (can be anything)
- Type of authentication
- Server address
- Now enter this information based on the configuration:
- Security protocol preshared key (if one is used)
- Username
- Password
- Select Save, tap on the newly created profile, then Connect.
3. Use the OpenVPN app on Android TV
VPN services that don’t want to bother with creating dedicated apps often opt for OpenVPN, a free VPN system available on a wide variety of platforms. If your service fits the bill, here’s how to add OpenVPN to Android TV:
- Head to your VPN provider’s website and sign in.
- Download their OpenVPN configuration file, then extract the .zip file anywhere you want.
- Keep the file handy and don’t close the tab.
- Use method 1 to download the OpenVPN Connect app for Android TV.
- Open the app, and tap on the OpenVPN profile option.
- In the top left corner, tap on the menu icon.
- Find the configuration file you extracted and tap on Import.
- Enter any name for the profile.
- Find and enter the credentials such as username and password. They’re likely displayed below the download option from step 2.
- Toggle the switch in the top left corner so that it shows Connected.
- Accept any trust/security prompts.
4. Connect your TV to the VPN router
Another method of protecting your Android TV with a VPN is to connect it to a wired or wireless network generated by a router with firmware that supports VPNs. We already demonstrated adding ExpressVPN to the router and even used the example above to showcase creating VPN servers on the router via OpenVPN.
5. Use a hotspot from devices with a VPN
Another way to shield your Android TV with a VPN is to share a connection from another device in the form of a hotspot. First, set up VPN on Windows, configure VPN on Mac, setup VPN on iPhone, or configure ExpressVPN on Android if you haven’t. Connect to VPN on the desired platform, and then follow method 2 in our guide for adding a VPN to Apple TV. With Mac and iOS covered, here’s how to create a hotspot on the remaining operating systems:
Android
On Android, do this create your hotspot:
- Launch Settings.
- Tap on Network & Internet.
- Go to Hotspot & tethering, then Wi-Fi hotspot.
- Select the name and password and configure desired security.
- Toggle the Wi-Fi hotspot option to on.
Windows
Creating a hotspot on your Windows 10 PC looks like this:
- Open Start.
- Click on Settings (cog icon).
- Click on Network & Internet >Mobile hotspot.
- Under “Share my Internet connection from”, select your network.
- Click on Edit, enter a network name and password, and click on Save.
- Toggle Share my Internet connection with other devices to on.

VPN is one of my passions. I love being secure and helping others avoid any potential threats online. I also contribute to several VPN guide websites online.
Before going into details of how to set up a VPN on your Android TV, let’s go over the uses of your provider and how you can make the best out of it.
Why use a VPN on your TV?
Although the answer is more than obvious, there is more to it, as an Android TV is not like the typical home flat-screen smart TV. A VPN provider can be helpful when used on any kind of device that provides you with watching movies, because it easily unblocks any kind of content, by also keeping you protected from prying eyes. However, when it comes to Android TV it can be helpful in more ways than one. Watching and streaming movies, playing games, and all other sorts of things. A while ago, when Google decided to shut down Google TV and replace it with the Android one, people were a bit skeptical. But after seeing that the platform is completely different and much better than the previous one, it became the new thing on the market. The TV can be voice-controlled and it has access to Google Play Store, making it possible for you to download your favorite games and apps.
With this said, you need to choose the right VPN provider. One that has the speeds, can unblock any kind of content, and all this while keeping you protected with the highest security protocols and encryptions. You have to set your standards high in order to have the best possible experience while enjoying your free time. After choosing the VPN provider that suits your needs the most, the next step is to set it up. And don’t worry, it’s very simple.
Step by step guide – how to set up a VPN on your Android TV
Before trying to set up a VPN on your Android TV, make sure that the provider is compatible with this type of device. Although most VPN service providers are compatible with the most popular and widely used devices and software, such as Windows or Mac, Android or iOS, some might not support it.
Once this is out of the way, there are two options for configuring your VPN provider on your Android Smart TV. The first one is by downloading the app available on the Google Play Store. It’s simple, you just download the app, sign in with your username and password, and log in. That’s it. However, not every provider has a standalone app on Play Store. In fact, only a few have. And if you are not one of the lucky ones, then the second option is your only choice.
Setting up a VPN without the Play Store app is slightly more complicated. Before starting, you will need two crucial things – the OpenVPN app and the Google Chrome browser. You can easily find and download OpenVPN from the Play Store, however, Chrome should be downloaded through the APK Mirror and then sideloaded.
After installing everything you need, open up Chrome and type the website from which you purchased your provider. With the username and password login to your account. Keep in mind that Chrome is not designed for an Android TV, so reaching this point might be slightly difficult, especially if you are using a remote or a controller.
After logging into your account, search for the “configuration file” that needs to be downloaded. If you have troubles finding it, ask your provider for it. Choose the right file for your device and click download. Note that Chrome needs to have permission to write files on the system.
Once it’s downloaded, go to the OpenVPN app and find the import button. It’s a square with a little arrow pointing down, usually in the upper right corner. Click on it and select the configuration file you just downloaded. It will require time to fully load, but after it’s done, simply click on the checkmark (upper right corner) and click to save the configuration. If you followed the instructions carefully, you should be able to highlight the file you just imported in order to activate the VPN. It will open the last box.
By now, you should be over with most of the setup. All you have left to do is import your username and password into the box and click OK to authenticate. There should be no problems, and if your private network is finally connected to your Android, you’ll see the following “Connection: Success” in your OpenVPN app. This means your VPN protection is up and running.
If you want to connect or disconnect the VPN, you will have to do it through the OpenVPN app. And even though sometimes it can be a bit annoying, at least now you’ll be protected and the overall experience with your TV will be much better. Also, you can now watch all the movies and TV series that were once blocked in your country. So grab some popcorn, put on your favorite movie, and enjoy!

Gone are the days of bulky TV sets with even bulkier antennas. This is the age when televisions can do more than what they were initially designed for. Android TV is one of the latest forms of home entertainment today, and it can do more than simple programming and broadcasting. With Android TVs, you can play games, install applications, post updates, watch YouTube videos, and browse the internet on the big screen.
Since most televisions are now connected to the Internet, the need for data protection and internet security has only grown stronger. Whenever you use your television to access the Internet, it becomes vulnerable to online threats, such as data theft, online snooping and malware infection.
One way to protect your Android TV from these risks is by routing your connection through a reliable VPN. However, setting up a VPN on Android TV box is not as easy as setting it up on your Android phone or tablet.
This article will guide you on how to secure your Android TV box with a VPN. The first option is to use a dedicated VPN for your Android TV while the second method requires setting up OpenVPN. Let’s look at these two options in detail below.
Setting up a VPN on Android TV Box, Using a Standalone VPN App
There are a couple of VPN options that support Android TV. Check with your VPN service provider first if it works with the Android TV platform. If it does, then you’re in luck because this is probably the simplest solution to your problem.
Just install the app on your Android TV, sign into your account, and enjoy secure browsing on your TV.
Setting up a VPN on Android TV Box, Using OpenVPN
This process is for those whose VPN subscription does not support Android TVs. The process is a bit tricky, that’s why we made this guide for you.
You will need a reliable VPN account like Outbyte VPN for this method. It provides total activity protection with its military-grade AES-256 encryption and can connect up to five devices using a single account.
To set up OpenVPN on your Android TV, follow these steps:
- First, you need to install Google Chrome and the OpenVPN app on your Android TV. You can download the OpenVPN app from Google Play Store, while Google Chrome can be ‘sideloaded’ from APK Mirror.
- Once these two apps have been installed, launch Google Chrome on your Android TV and log into your VPN account. You can use a Bluetooth keyboard for faster typing.
- Download your VPN configuration file. You can check out your VPN’s website if it’s available there. If not, you can request for it from your VPN provider.
- When asked to choose which configuration file to download, select Linux/Mac config file.
- For newly installed Chrome, you’ll need to grant it permission to write files to the system.
- Once the config file has been downloaded, launch the OpenVPN app you installed on your Android TV.
- Using your TV’s remote, click on the Import icon on the top-right corner of the screen. This button looks like a little box with the down arrow.
- Choose the config file you previously downloaded.
- Once the file has been loaded, click the checkmark on the upper-right corner of the screen to save the config.
- Enable your VPN by clicking on the config file you just imported.
- Type in your VPN account’s username and password.
- After entering your username and password, click OK.
By following this process, you will be able to use the OpenVPN app to connect to and disconnect from your VPN. This process may be a little inconvenient, but it’s better than having no protection at all.
How to setup VPN on Mi Box (international version)
Mi Box is a 4K Android TV set-top box. It offers HDR video support and Bluetooth voice remote. For such features, it’s quite a bargain (US $ 69). Yet, it’s got [email protected] support and certified by Netflix. I would say it’s probably the cheapest way to watch 4K Netflix on your new 4K UltraHD TV system.
However if you do not live in the US and want to watch the latest TV episodes like the American do, you probably need a VPN connection to the United States.
If you are looking for a reliable VPN service provider for your Mi box, we recommend you this VyprVPN, because it works on almost all devices.
Where to find the VPN settings on Mi Box
If you own an Android smartphone of any version, you could easily find the VPN settings in the Settings app. But, in the Android TV Mi Box, you can’t find anything about VPN in the settings.
How to make VPN connection to US, Europe and Japan on Mi Box
Luckily, there is still a solution. Open Google Play Store and search for “VyprVPN“. You will find an app to be used on Android TV. Of course, it’s not free. any fast, legal and quality VPN service isn’t free anyway and it shouldn’t be free. Click here to find a more detailed tutorial from vendor’s website.
How to make VPN connection to China on Mi Box
Although VyprVPN did a great job on making VPN connection to US, Europe and Japan. it does not offer any VPN server in China. If you are wondering why people want to make a VPN connection to China, you probably don’t know that there are many great online streaming service providers in China, such as QQ, iQiyi, LeTV.
To setup a VPN connection to China, you will need to have this app “网趣云加速“. It’s also a paid service. After you install the APK on your Mi Box, you can setup a VPN to China and enjoy the videos from cloud services.
Android TV
1. Из магазина приложений Google Play устанавливаем приложение OpenVPN for Android.

Sony Smart TV’s also have access to Sony Entertainment Network that increases the variety of entertainment choices considerably.
A VPN service can keep the data encrypted and your IP hidden when you access the Internet. One of the important features offered by a VPN service is anonymity while surfing the Web. With the constant shift from traditional TV viewing to online streaming, Smart TVs, in general, have become even more popular.
However, streaming does have its limitations. In case you’re an expat living abroad, you’re probably already aware that you cannot watch your favorite TV channels from back home because of geo-restrictions.
This is why VPNs are now very popular and sought-after technologies. A VPN basically allows a user to unblock geo-restricted content from all around the world. Bearing all that in mind, have a look at the best VPNs for Sony Smart TVs or what they’re commonly known as Sony Bravia TVs.
Best VPN for Sony Bravia TV – Index
Sony Smart TVs have a lot to offer. You just have to know what tools to use to unblock their full potential. In their case, it’s a VPN. However, not all VPNs can do the job, which brings us to this best VPN for Sony Smart TV review.
Sony Internet TV vs Sony Android TV
Before I dive into the Best VPN for Sony Smart TV analysis, I should mention that Sony TV has two different operating systems. Sony Internet TV is the older version as it was Sony’s own operating system. It wasn’t all that popular due to slow performance and hard navigation. Newer Sony Bravia TVs come with Android OS pre-installed on them.
In case you purchased your Sony TV recently, there’s a high chance that it’s Android-based. In general, Sony began installing Google’s Android TV operating system on their TV sets back in 2015. Check out the full list of Sony Android TVs here. While older models of Sony TVs aren’t natively compatible with VPNs, the newer Android-based ones are.

- First, on your computer or mobile, visit the ExpressVPN website, and create a VPN account.

Setting up a VPN (Virtual Private Network) with an Android TV box is a good idea for a variety of reasons such as when using Kodi.
A VPN is very handy while online and can make you anonymous by bouncing your IP off a server changing your location.
How To Install a VPN To an Android TV Box (Quick Steps)
- Visit the IPVanish Webpage Here and select a paid VPN plan.
- Go Here and download the App from IPVanish webpage or Google Play Store.
- After it downloads, install the IPVanish App onto your Android TV box.

What Type of VPN Service is Needed for an Android TV Box?
A good VPN will have many locations to choose from around the world, and easy to change when you want to be seem to come from a different city or Country.
Speed is another factor and very important since most stream video with their Android box and having a VPN that has unlimited download and fast connection is a must.
There are many free services that come and go which may be a good option, if you can find one that stays up and is fast.
Often a good free VPN will become overwhelmed causing it to become slow or shut down.
Also be wary about using a free VPN service since all your data will be flowing through their network.
While a VPN does encrypt data and make you anonymous the service that is connected to can see your data if they want to.
I don’t recommend you install any software from a free service since it may contain malware, or other malicious software such as a Botnet. Most all modern Operating Systems from Windows to Android have built-in VPN software that can be manually setup.
It may be more difficult to setup a VPN manually but if a free service is used its worth the time, in my opinion.
Manually configuring a VPN will help to stop any malicious code from an easy install software setup.
It will not protect you from the people running the VPN which may be able to see any data flowing through their network.
There can be good free options but by their very nature are prone to go down or become slow which in turn takes time to find another one.
A much easier option is a paid VPN which will have (hopefully) a fast connection, no logging, and trust worthy.
Using a paid service will cost money, usually $5-$10 dollars a month, but depending on how much time you have to hunt down good free VPN’s as they come and go it may be worth it.
I decided some time ago to go with a paid VPN using IPVanish which has a lot of good features for streaming videos. Features such as unlimited streaming, fast connection, anonymous torrenting, privacy, and 27/7 support.
There are many good VPN services with IPVanish simply the best one I have found.
Below are the step used by IPVanish to use their service. Most all will be the same with a few miner changes in layout and features.
IPVanish is a paid service and will need a username and password.
Sign Up for IPVanish HERE
Note: If your box has problems with the Google Play Store the App can be installed from IPVanish Website from Here.
How To Add a VPN To an Android TV Box (With Pictures)
- Go to the Play Store and search for IPVanish
Click Install.
After it installs it will be located in the Apps section of your box.
Open IPVanish and at the top left click for the options.
Enter you Username and Password and Sign In.
A list of servers will come up select the one you want to use.
There are many servers located around the world so choose the best option for you, it can always be changed. So for example to use a Chicago USA server click it.
It will connect to the server.
A screen will come up showing you are connected.
To test the VPN open a Browser and Google “What is my IP” it should show the city server connected to and IPVanish.

Tried to change the vpn on my Comcast router and it won’t let me save the address in static mode only seems to operate on the dhcp. I have a mxq pro tv box and it must be blocked i’m getting a NO DATA report. Is there anything i can do about it. I did try my Verizon hot spot and it worked perfectly. Thanks.
this is all new to me. i have an EM95 android tv box, a vpn to download does it just load on the box? what is a router? is a router a needed requirement?
So the question actually Is, What do you have to do to setup a router VPN? Hopefully we don’t have to spell everything out to you. Please
Would it not be possible to just configure a hardware based VPN on your router (NordVPN for example) and have the Kodi box use its wifi or ethernet? Then have a second router for other household wifi? Just asking if it’s possible to use a router as the VPN rather than a software based app on the Kodi device itself.

How to Set Up VPN for Android TV?
As a rule, there are normally two options for setting up a VPN for Android TV. Either you have a Smart TV, which can easily set up a VPN connection; or, if this is not possible, the Shellfire Box is a practical solution.
Option 1: VPN for Android TV via Shellfire App
The first presents the free option, as we off our Shellfire app free of cost, however, it, unfortunately, doesn’t work on an Android TV. Alternatively, you can use the app for a VPN connection on the following systems:
Unfortunately, it is impossible to connect this app with Android TV because it is impossible to install new applications.
Option 2: VPN for Android via Shellfire Box
The alternative is to use the Shellfire Box to connect your Android TV with a VPN. We have prepared a video for you, or alternatively, you can check out the Shellfire Box information page.
Should you choose the Shellfire Box, it is very easy to use the device to form an active VPN connection.
- The Shellfire Box is supplied with power via cable.
- A connection is established between the router and the box. Only a network cable is needed for this.
- Once you connect Shellfire’s WLAN to the Android TV, you’re ready to go.
You can now start your VPN connection and explore different options. For example, you can take the Box with you on holiday to generate a desired foreign address from any country, for example, to watch local movies and series on a foreign TV via a streaming provider.
Frequently Asked Questions About Android TV VPN
What are the advantages of an Android TV VPN connection?
In general, Smart TV already offers many perks, no matter which operating system the device runs. For example, with an Android TV, you can easily access various apps to stream movies and series. Most apps are free to install on your device, so you can design your TV settings the way you want.
The apps on Android TV are doubly worthwhile when combined with a VPN connection, as you don’t have to deal with locational limitations. The following apps are especially popular:
- Streaming: e.g. Netflix, NBC, YouTube, Canal+, Disney Channel, CNN GO, Hulu, FXNOW, HBO Now, Spotify, Twitch, TED TV
- Live TV: e.g. NBA, NFL, sling, Twitter, Fox Sports Go, Bloomberg TV, ABC
- Apps & Games: e.g. Crossy Road, NBR Jam, Final Fantasy, Grand Theft Auto, Deer Hunter, Minecraft, Shadowblade
When you set up a VPN connection, you can stream and play without restrictions depending on which country IP you choose. Below is an overview of the main advantages of combining the Shellfire Box with Android TV, for example:
- Use the various apps on the Android TV with an anonymous IP address.
- Switch between the VPN and home network connection at any time.
- Switch between IP addresses from different countries in seconds.
- VPN client simply runs in the background, leaving you free to do other things.
- Remain anonymous and secure without being restricted.
- The Shellfire Box can also be used for other devices, such as a VPN connection on PlayStation or Xbox.
Is there also a free VPN available for Android TV?
You can install several apps on the Android, but unfortunately not the Shellfire app. For this reason, you will have to use the Shellfire Box if you want to use a secure VPN connection via Android TV.
It’s worth the investment as it benefits not only your Android TV but all the other devices you want to connect to the Shellfire Box as well.
VPN for Android TV: Conclusion
When it comes to streaming, it’s not always easy to choose the best offer. Depending on which country you’re in, your IP address may prevent you from watching certain movies or series, or from downloading certain apps. A VPN connection solves this problem, so you can easily obtain an IP address from a country of your choice to access all the offerings of a certain provider. With the Shellfire Box, the VPN connection on an Android TV device is child’s play and ready to go in seconds.
