How to search every streaming site at once with roku search

It’s one of the great annoyances of the streaming media age: figuring out which shows and movies are on which services. Searching Netflix, Hulu, Amazon Prime, and other sites individually takes up way too much time, especially when you just want to relax and watch something.

If you’ve got a Roku, however, you can search all these and other sites at once. Every late 2017 Roku save the Express comes with a Voice Search remote, including the Streaming Stick, the Streaming Stick+, and the Ultra. Before 2017 the Roku 3, Roku 4, and Roku Ultra all offered voice search on the remote.

Users of other Roku devices can use an Android or iOS device for voice searching thanks to a handy app. Both methods let you search for any show or movie, then quickly discover which streaming services offer what you’re looking for. And as of Roku OS 8, you can also use this feature to search for specific genres and actors, or even launch channels directly.

Voice Search With Your Roku Remote

If you own a compatible remote, there is a magnifying glass button below the down arrow. Hold this button down, then put the remote to your mouth like a microphone, and say what it is you want to watch. Your Roku will start a search, like this:

If you don’t have a microphone on your remote, there’s a “Search” option in your Roku’s main menu, but it requires typing using a clumsy on-screen keyboard. It’s honestly a lot easier to use your phone, so skip to the section below to learn how to do that.

Scroll through the results to find the show or movie you want to watch. If you’re looking for a show, you can browse individual seasons and see which services offer them.

I’ve searched for Doctor Who. Amazon Prime users can stream the show for free, but if you don’t subscribe to Amazon Prime or Amazon Video, it’s also available for sale on Vudu. Tapping the Amazon Prime result will launch the video immediately, assuming you’re an Amazon Prime subscriber with the app installed on your Roku. You can also follow shows on Roku to get updates about new episodes, if that’s something that you want.

Apparently Doctor Who is not on Netflix anymore, which is disappointing. How do I know that? Because if the show were on Netflix, Roku would tell us. Here’s what this menu looks like for a more widely-available show, Parks and Recreation:

In this case, we have no end of streaming options. Scrolling through the list, I see that this show is available to stream on Netflix, Seeso, Hulu, and Amazon Prime, and episodes are for sale individually on a few other services. Spoiled for choice!

You get the idea: press a button, say what you want to watch, then find it. It’s simple, and lets you comparison shop if a given show or movie is not offered for free or subscription streaming.

As of Roku OS 8, which should be on most Roku devices as of autumn 2017, you can also search for specific actors and genres. Simply say an actor’s name and you’ll see works featuring them.

How to search every streaming site at once with roku search

According to Roku, you can even invoke natural language, but this is limited. Combinations like “comedies featuring Jim Carrey” and “movies with Tom Hanks” worked, narrowing the search a little bit. Other searches, like “Christmas movies” or “horror movies with Robin Williams,” yielded no results. Your mileage may vary.

You can also launch channels directly using Voice Search. Say “Netflix” and Netflix will open; say “NHL” and the NHL.tv channel will open. It’s kinda neat, so give it a shot.

Search for Movies or Shows on Your Phone

If your Roku device doesn’t offer voice search on the remote, don’t worry: you can still search using your phone. First you’ll need to install the Roku mobile app, if you haven’t already. Launch the app and you’ll see a search icon at the top-right of the main screen.

How to search every streaming site at once with roku search

Click that icon and you can start searching. You can type with your phone, or click the microphone icon at top-right to search with your voice.

Once you’re done you’ll see results, laid out just the same as you did on your Roku before.

Browse which services offer a given movie or TV show, then launch them directly on your Roku, all from your phone. You’ll find this much faster than Googling which services offer which shows, an exercise that rarely pays off in any case.

And all the features outlined above are also supported: you can search for an actor or genre using this tool, and even launch Roku Channels directly. Enjoy!

One of the frustrating problems with modern streaming is that there are so many channels — it’s hard to keep track of where you need to go to watch a particular TV show or movie.

Fortunately, your Roku media player has a powerful search tool built in that goes a long way towards solving that problem. Roku searches across all streaming channels to help you quickly find the show you’re looking for, and lets you watch it with just a couple of clicks.

Here’s how to search on Roku to find the content you’re looking for.

How to use Roku search with the remote

Most of the time, you’ll probably search with the on-screen keyboard using the Roku remote.

1. Using the remote, select “Search.”

2. Type the name of the movie, show, actor, director, genre, or channel you want to find. Roku will display all the results it can find, so you’ll see a mix of people’s names, channels, shows, and more in the list of results.

3. Select the item you want. If you see a show, select it to start watching right away. If you searched by an actor’s name, just select that actor and you’ll see a page that lists all of his or her films. You can then select the one you want to watch.

When you select a specific result, Roku will also indicate the cost of the show. Some content is “pay per view,” in which case you need to buy or rent the show.

If you have an over the air antenna connected to your Roku, the search results may also include current and future TV programming. If you select a show that’s airing in the future, the Roku will switch to the correct channel, but you’ll need to remember when it starts broadcasting.

How to use Roku search on the mobile app

If you prefer, you can use the Roku app on your iPhone or Android device to search for shows. It works essentially the same way.

1. Start the Roku app on your phone.

2. Tap the search icon at the top right of the screen.

3. Search for the show, actor, director, genre, or other criteria.

4. When you see the result you like, select it.

You can also use voice search on your phone. At the bottom of the screen, tap “Control” and then tap the microphone at the top right of the remote control page. You can use search terms like these:

  • Show me movies with Patrick Stewart
  • Find “2001: A Space Odyssey”
  • Show me documentaries
  • Hulu

Brilliant. Robust. Perfect Film App!

For all of you passionate movie-watchers out there like me, it’s sometimes hard to find those unknown gems that spark excitement and real joy. The Reelgood App is a MUST HAVE for everyone, from novices to the aspiring film-buffs/wannabe Siskel & Eberts!
Search, save, and sort your favorite movies and TV shows in the matter of a few clicks. Find out what streaming service they’re on within another few clicks. Learn about other related movies and shows with just a few more clicks!
Honestly, during the pandemic, this has been one of my most used Apps to browse and note all of those great, highly rated movies, that I never knew about and would later realize that I wouldn’t have found it without the Reelgood App. Best App to casually waste time on, but later come to understand that you’re actually heavily investing into your free-time and screen time. If you like film, get the Reelgood App now.
Hands down the best iPhone App that I’ve found and used in 2020. #NQ

It’s good, but…

I really enjoy this app. I helps me see wha films are on witch current services and the fantastic amount of films presented on this app.
One of the features I love, (and is probably my favorite) is the watchlist. I love putting movies on my “seen” and “haven’t seen” list. I mostly put movies on my “seen” list. I like seeing my movies all in one list, witch is why we are here. There are two separate lists, “On your services” and “Not on your services.” If you put a movie on your watchlist, then it goes to one of those lists on there. Witch is a really good feature, but there is no option where you can see the films in just one list. To me, that’s a big thing. I want to see all of my movies In one list, and the fact that they are split in two does not really make me happy. Unlike the website, you can have the option to see all of your movies in one list as well as seeing witch movies are on your services or not.
Maybe there is a option to change that and I just haven’t found it yet, but as of now I could not find anything, and it’s bothering me.
Thank you.

Life changing

If you have a Roku, ReelGood will change your life.

No more wasting time hunting for something to watch or where to watch something. I spent 1 hour adding TV shows and movies to my watch list and now I’ve got enough to watch for at least a year and I’ll save god knows how many hours over that time not wasting my time looking for something to watch every time I turn on the TV.

With ReelGood I know if something is available on any of my services for free. I don’t have to hunt around in each of my services to see if it’s available. And, ReelGood will notify me if anything in my watch list becomes available for free on any of my services.

By far, though, the best best best part of ReelGood is that I can tap on something to watch in the app and it will just start playing on my Roku. I don’t have to go the channel on my Roku and search for the thing I want to watch. Instead, ReelGood launches the channel and starts playing it on my Roku for me.

My only nitpick is that I wish I could set defaults to get something playing on my bedroom Roku with one tap. We have 4 Rokus in the house so it asks me each time which Roku I want to play something on. 99.9% of the time I’m watching on the bedroom Roku. And, I’ll never want to play something on my daughter’s Roku in her bedroom. Also, if I tap to watch something on HBO it asks which version of HBO we have every time (HBO Go, HBO Now, Etc.). I don’t really care. We have HBO Now so just play it there.

How to search every streaming site at once with roku search

Have a Roku streaming device? Cool. Now have a movie or TV show you want to watch, but don’t know whether it’s on Netflix, or Amazon, or Hulu? Well, I’ve got good news for you, as Roku has just launched a universal search feature, which will help you discover content available across some of the more popular video services available on its streaming set-top boxes.

The availability of a new, universal search option will help to solve a major problem that exists not just on Roku, but on most devices capable of streaming video from multiple channels or apps. That is, when faced with hundreds of thousands of pieces of content across multiple services, it’s nearly impossible to know where to find a single piece of content. And in the case of Roku in particular, going into one channel to search for a piece of content — only to not find it — can be a frustrating experience, thanks to the overall side-scrolling UI and lack of a keyboard on its remote.

Other streaming devices have solved for the search issue in a few different ways. In the case of the iPad, there are now universal search and discovery apps, like Fanhattan or Dijit’s NextGuide, which collapse multiple streaming services into one easy-to-navigate interface. And with the availability of new video services, Microsoft recently rolled out a universal search function for its Xbox Live service.

In Roku’s case, the new Roku Search channel will peer into some of the most popular apps available on the device, including Netflix, Amazon Instant Video, Hulu Plus, Crackle, VUDU, and HBO GO. In addition to searching for a movie or TV show title, users can also search for available titles that include specific actors or directors. Once you’ve found a title you’re looking for, you can see which services a piece of content is available on and choose between them.

How to search every streaming site at once with roku search

I played around with the new Roku Search feature and found it a welcome change to the old way of finding anything on the Roku device — i.e. endlessly poking around. But, to be honest, it’s still pretty clunky due to the general Roku UI and the way you have to scroll through and click letters to search on the screen.

Roku says that there are more than 130,000 titles searchable through the new channel, as well as nearly 100,000 actors and directors. Roku Search will work with all Roku 2, Roku LT, and new Roku HD players, as well as the Roku Streaming Stick. And users of the Roku iOS and Android mobile apps will be able to access the keyboard through those apps, eliminating some of the up-down-left-right issues scrolling through letters on the device.

Roku Search became available as part of a free update that the company will push to users over the next week. Or, if you’re impatient, just go to Settings, choose “Software Update,” and the streaming box should update to the latest version and install Roku Search via channel code.

Unification is the predominant theme for cord-cutting in 2020. Rather than bouncing between a half-dozen or more streaming apps, we’ll see more attempts at funneling all our subscriptions into one big TV guide.

The latest effort comes from Reelgood, which just released a nifty new remote control feature for Roku devices. When you find something to watch in Reelgood’s streaming guide apps for iPhone or Android, you can press a button and launch the video directly on your Roku player or smart TV.

I’ve been using a pre-release version of Reelgood’s new iPhone app this week (the Android version is already available), and while I ran into some issues with a handful of services, it worked flawlessly with content from Netflix, Hulu, Amazon Prime Video, Disney+, Tubi, and Crackle. Roku itself doesn’t provide anything like this, so using Reelgood’s remote app might be even better than navigating with an actual remote.

Remote control trickery

Mentioned in this article

Roku Streaming Stick+

How to search every streaming site at once with roku search

If you’re not familiar with Reelgood, the app provides universal search, recommendations, and a watchlist for your streaming services. Select the services that you use, and you can browse for movies and shows across all of them at the same time. Reelgood will also tailor its recommendations over time based on what you’ve added to your watchlist.

In the past, Reelgood was siloed off from streaming devices such as Roku players or Amazon Fire TV Sticks. You could use Reelgood’s mobile app or website to track shows or get recommendations, but ultimately you’d still have to pick up a separate remote and wade through a bunch of menus to reach the actual content. (One exception: You could use Reelgood to launch other videos apps on your phone, then launch video on your TV via Chromecast.)

With the remote control feature, Reelgood is no longer an island. You just select a movie or show in the Reelgood app, then select any Roku on your Wi-Fi network for playback. Roku will then launch the appropriate app and load the movie or show you’ve selected. Reelgood’s mobile app even provides a virtual remote control, so you can pause, fast forward, or rewind without reaching for the physical Roku remote.

How to search every streaming site at once with roku search Jared Newman / IDG

Reelgood’s app will automatically find any Roku devices on the same network, so you can send content to them.

Eli Chamberlin, Reelgood’s head of product and design, said via email that the company is using some trickery to make this happen. When you select a movie or show in the mobile app, Reelgood transmits a set of identifiers for that content to the Roku, similar in nature to links on the web. Roku doesn’t officially provide this data to app makers, so Reelgood has done a lot of data mining to figure out which identifiers will prompt a particular video to launch.

“We have indexed so much content from various services, along with many different types of content identifiers, that we can construct many different permutations of these links to see what works,” Chamberlin said. “We’re currently wading our way through each and every service, combining different data we collect to get ones that launch the content successfully.”

Work in progress

The hacky nature of Reelgood’s approach might explain why it doesn’t yet work with every streaming service.

Whether you’ve nabbed a new model or have had the same Roku for years, there’s more to know about these media streaming devices than meets the eye.

How to search every streaming site at once with roku search

Whether you’re a cord cutter or not, you probably want a streaming device for your TV. Roku is a popular choice, particularly as it ramps up its own original content.

There’s a lot of variety and portability when it comes to Roku devices, from the budget Roku Express to the brand-new Roku Streaming Stick 4K. Whether you’ve nabbed a new model or have had the same one for years, there’s more to know beyond the basics of a Marvel marathon. We’ve put together lots of ways for you to get more out of your streaming device.

1. Watch Free Movies and Shows on The Roku Channel

Video-streaming services are great but they cost money. With The Roku Channel, you can sign in and access those premium channels (like HBO Max and Netflix), but the channel also offers free access to thousands of movies and TV episodes, if you can handle a few commercials. Roku acquired Quibi’s content in January, and is adding dozens of its own shows.

For a cable-like experience without the cost, go to the Roku Channel and scroll down to the Live TV Channel Guide for hundreds of channels. You can also watch in the Roku app whether you have a Roku device or not. Just download it, sign in or create an account, and start streaming.

2. Search 3,000 Apps at Once

Instead of searching every Roku channel individually to find what you want, you can search across them with Roku Search. Enter your search term via the Roku remote, Roku mobile app, or via voice search, and you’ll get results from over 3,000 channels, whether you have them or not. Search by title, actor, or director and you’ll get a comprehensive list. Similarly, use Roku Search to compare costs of streaming content. Type in a movie, show, or star and you’ll get a list of available titles and their costs across channels and services.

3. Get in the Zone

Roku Zones, meanwhile, are collections of movies and shows gathered across channels and organized by genre or topic. Go to search, type in a genre like “comedy,” and then scroll over to the zone that pops up.

4. Discover ‘Secret’ Roku Channels

Not all available Roku channels are listed in the Roku Channel Store. To find private ones that don’t show up under the channel guide and to add them manually, check out the Roku Guide. Clink the link you want, then Add Channel, and you’ll be taken to a Roku account page. Log in, add the code for the channel, and you’re set.

5. Turn Your Phone Into a Roku Remote

As great as the Roku is, navigating from the remote could use some help. Download the Roku Official Remote Control app (iOS, Android) and get the benefit of a keyboard, easy searching, and streaming from your phone or tablet.

6. Talk to Your Roku Remote

That said, there are some ways you can talk to your Roku directly. You can do this if you have a Roku Voice Remote Pro, Enhanced Voice Remote, Voice Remote, Gaming Remote, the Roku Touch tabletop remote that comes with Roku’s wireless speakers, or the Roku mobile app. On the remotes, press either the microphone or magnifying glass and hold them while you speak your request. On the app, select the magnifying glass to get to the search page and then tap the microphone, let it go, speak your request, and tap the middle of the screen.

7. Ask Alexa or the Google Assistant

If you have an Amazon Echo and a Roku, ask Alexa to control your Roku. First, you’ll have to link both accounts by opening the Alexa mobile app, selecting Skills & Games, and searching for Roku. When you find it, tap Enable, sign in to your Roku account, and select the Roku device you want to link (or Select All if you have more than one). Then close your Roku account so Alexa will search for the device on the Device Discovery screen.

Once it finds it, tap Manage, Link Devices, and select the Roku you want to connect to Alexa. Then add the Roku to a group by selecting the Devices icon. Either add it to an existing group or create a new one by tapping the plus button. In the Alexa app, tap on the Roku device and make sure it is enabled. Then you’re set to ask things like, “Alexa, open Netflix on living room Roku.”

Roku has also opened its platform to Google, so you can use Google Assistant to make voice requests. First check that your Roku player is running Roku OS 9.0 or higher or that your Roku TV has Roku OS 8.2 or higher. Set up your Google Assistant on your Google device or app. Open the Google Assistant mobile app, tap Explore > Settings > Home Control > Add Device > Find > Roku. Sign in to your Roku account and then choose which device you want to control with Google Assistant.

8. Get Your Roku to Talk to Siri

For iPhone and iPad owners, Roku devices support AirPlay and HomeKit, so you can send videos, photos, and music from your device to the TV and supported speakers. Set it up in the Roku menu by navigating to Settings > Apple AirPlay & HomeKit > Launch Apple AirPlay & HomeKit setup. A QR code will pop up. Scan it with your iPhone or iPad’s camera and follow the instructions on your Apple device to finish setup. HomeKit, meanwhile, lets you control your Roku using Siri and the Apple Home app (“Hey Siri, play jazz on the living room TV”).

9. Roku Screen Mirroring

With AirPlay enabled, you can mirror your iPhone or iPad screen via the Control Center to Roku, though most Roku devices support screen mirroring from Android and Windows devices too. To hook it up, press the Home button on your Roku remote, then go to Settings > System > Screen Mirroring. You’ll have the option to choose between Prompt or Always Allow.

10. Practice Casting

If you prefer Google’s Chromecast, you can cast music, videos, and photos from mobile devices to most Roku-connected devices easily if both are connected to the same Wi-Fi network. Open the content you want to share on the device and look for the cast icon. Click it and you should see all available Roku devices pop up in a menu.

11. Automatic Volume Leveling

How many times have you been lulled into near-somnolence by a show only to be jolted awake by a commercial? On most Roku models, you can turn on Leveling so a commercial or a channel change doesn’t result in a spike in volume. Or choose to have soft sounds increased and loud sounds decreased with Night mode.

You can turn on the feature either from Settings if you have a Streambar or Smart Soundbar or while streaming with other Roku devices. For Streambars and Soundbars, press the home button on the remote and go to Settings > Audio > Volume Modes. For other devices, press the star button on the remote and navigate to Sound Settings > Volume Mode.

How to search every streaming site at once with roku search

What is the great annoyance of the streaming media era? Goes without saying; identifying which movies and TV shows are on which services. Looking for Amazon Prime, Netflix, Hulu, and other Roku USA channels or streaming websites personally take up too much time, particularly whilst you simply want to relax and watch something.

In case you own a Roku streaming device, you can search a lot of these and different websites right away. Every new Roku comes with a voice search remote, which includes the Streaming Stick, the Streaming Stick+, and the Ultra. Prior to these devices, the Roku 3, Roku 4, and Roku Ultra all provided voice search on the remote.

Customers of other Roku gadgets can make use of an Android or iOS device for voice searching, all thanks to a handy app. Both strategies assist you to search for any movie or show, then easily find out which streaming services offer what you’re searching out. And as of Roku OS 8, you may also use this feature to look for unique genres and actors, or even launch channels at once.

Before anything else, make sure that you have completed activation for Roku device so that you can quickly find what you are looking for.

Table of Contents

Voice Search Using Your Roku Remote

On the off chance that you have a compatible device, there’s a magnifying glass button beneath the down arrow. Hold this button down, put the remote near to your mouth like a microphone, and say what it is you need to watch.

In case your remote doesn’t include a microphone on your remote, there’s a “search” option on your Roku.com link menu, but it requires typing using a clumsy on-display keyboard. It’s surely a lot less complicated to use your telephone, so jump to the section underneath to discover ways to do that.

Scroll through the results to find the movie or show you wish to watch. On the off chance that you’re seeking a specific show, you could browse individual seasons and spot which services offer them. While using the remote, check the volume level once as you may get no volume on Roku error.

On Roku OS 8, you are also able to search for particular actors and genres. Just say an actor’s name and you’ll see results featuring them.

As per Roku, you can even invoke native language, but that is constrained. Mixtures like “films with Tom Hanks” and “comedies presenting Jim Carrey” worked, narrowing the search a little bit. However, other searches such as “horror movies with Robin Williams” or “Christmas films” yielded no results.

What’s more, it even gives you facility to launch channels directly using voice search after activating your device using Roku link. Say “Netflix” and Netflix will open; say “NHL” and the NHL.tv channel will open. Sounds easy? Why not you give it a shot?

Search for Movies or Shows on Your Phone

In case your Roku gadget doesn’t provide voice search on the remote, fret not: you can still make the usage of your cellphone. First, you’ll have to download and install the Roku mobile app if you haven’t already. Open the app and also you’ll see a search icon on the main display. With the help of this app, you can watch TBS on Roku or any other channel of your choice.

All you have to do is just click on that icon and start searching. Type with your cell phone or click the microphone icon to search using your melodious voice.

As soon as you’re done, you’ll see results. Simply select the one you are looking for.

Browse which services offer a given television show or movie, then launch them at once on your Roku, all from your cellphone.

And all the capabilities mentioned above also are supported: you can search for an actor or genre with the use of this device, or even launch Roku channels like TNT on Roku directly. Happy Streaming!

As streaming services proliferate, it’s becoming more of a challenge to track down your favorite TV shows and blockbuster movies when streaming services can change up their offerings every month

Content is king — if you can find it.

As streaming services proliferate, it’s becoming more of a challenge to track down your favorite TV shows and blockbuster movies when streaming services can change up their offerings every month. That’s complicating life for those who know what they want to watch, but just don’t know where to locate it.

Some hits are practically itinerants. “Batman Begins” and “The Dark Knight,” for instance, bounced around four different services between March 2020 and March 2021 — Netflix, Hulu, HBO Max and Peacock. Some of these services hosted the movies twice in that time according to Reelgood, a service that tracks videos across streaming services. (You can currently find the movies on Hulu and HBO Max.)

Want to watch a Harry Potter movie? Films in the series started on HBO Max in May 2020 before heading to Peacock in August. They then jumped back to HBO Max in June 2021 — but only for a single month. At the moment, the first three films are available for free on Peacock, but you’ll need a premium subscription for the last five.

Not long after its March launch, Paramount+ reclaimed some of its movies, like “Mission Impossible: Ghost Protocol” and the Paul Rudd comedy “I Love You Man,” from other services.

This merry-go-round arguably started in 2019 when NBC said it would no longer license “The Office” to Netflix, although Netflix kept the rights through 2020 — a move intended to bolster NBC’s Peacock streaming service. “The Office” was the most viewed show on Netflix in 2018, streamed for over 52 billion minutes, according to Nielsen. HBO Max made a similar move when it yanked back “Friends” from Netflix.

The Hollywood producers of these shows and films likely appreciate the extra cash they’ve earned from licensing shows to Netflix, Amazon Prime Video and similar services. But those partners have steadily morphed into competitors as studios like NBCUniversal, Disney and WarnerMedia created their own streaming options to get in on the gold rush. In the meantime, Netflix, Amazon and Hulu have focused more on creating their own original content.

“Exclusive content has always been an important factor in the battle for streaming dominance,” said Reelgood CEO David Sanderson. Production companies that want a bigger piece of the pie, he said, have realized that their best chance of success involves their own properties.

Consumers, meanwhile, are left to frantically scan for the shows they want. Chris Kaufman, a 35-year-old in Logan, Utah, once put movies like the “Ocean’s 11″ trilogy in his Netflix queue to watch later. But when he got around to them, they were gone. (They left Netflix in December 2020 and are now on HBO Max).

“I don’t have a whole lot of time in the day to watch, and now I have to go and search it out,” he said.

Search engines can help. Alan Keane, a 35-year-old Brooklyn resident, says he uses Google when not searching through individual services. Other choices include apps such as Reelgood and JustWatch, which let you search a customizable list of services for particular titles. Digital media players like Roku and Apple TV also let you search across all the streaming apps you subscribe to.

But constantly having to search out those shows and movies can be frustrating. Since there are no penalties for consumers who drop a streaming service, it can also lead to customer “churn,” an industry term for the pace at which people sign up for and drop services, said Jeff Wlodarczak, an analyst at Pivotal Research.

“If your streaming service runs out of interesting content, I would simply drop the service and come back at a later date,” he said.

Kaufman said he and his family, including his wife and toddler, are considering dropping Netflix since they’re using HBO Max more now.

“We have been in discussion as a household, we might be dropping a service on a monthly basis, and reacquiring it a couple months later when it is fresh and new for us,” he said.

Kevin Westcott, who heads consulting firm Deloitte’s U.S. technology, media and telecom business, said his firm’s research finds that this content merry-go-round is the leading frustration subscribers report with streaming services. It’s also the No. 2 reason people say they may cancel a service, coming in just after price increases.

But he doesn’t see things changing any time soon. In fact, Westcott figures that a version of “windowing” — the process of releasing a movie first in a theater, then on cable channels and streaming services — will stick around because it’s a major source of revenue for the studios. “We’re always going to be in a situation where content will move,” he said.

Netflix, Amazon, NBCUniversal, Disney and WarnerMedia did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

It’s much easier than jumping back and forth between Netflix, Crave, Disney+ and other platforms to find that one movie you want to watch

How to search every streaming site at once with roku search

My single biggest issue with streaming services is that I can’t keep track of which movies and shows are available on which platform. If you’ve ever spent half an hour jumping from Netflix to Crave to Disney+ looking for a movie you want to watch, you know my pain.

Worse, if you use a smart TV, you probably feel it even more. I love that I can open a streaming app on my Roku TV and start watching something with a few clicks, but trying to look up a movie is painfully slow, especially if I don’t know what service it’s on.

However, I recently stumbled across a website called ‘JustWatch’ that has, for the most part, solved my complaints. I thought I’d share it so anyone else frustrated with trying to find content on streaming networks can finally get some sweet relief.

JustWatch is a simple service that lets you look up a movie or TV show and see a neat list of what platforms currently have it available. Plus, it works in Canada and supports both the Canadian versions of popular streaming apps and many Canada-specific platforms like Crave and CBC Gem.

How to search every streaming site at once with roku search

As an example, let’s say you wanted to re-watch Game of Thrones. If you look up the series on JustWatch, you can see a list of where it’s available to stream in Canada. JustWatch lists it under ‘Crave Plus’ since you need Crave and the ‘Movies + HBO’ add-on. Game of Thrones is also on Videotron’s Illico streaming platform. Moreover, JustWatch lists options for buying Game of Thrones (Apple TV and Google Play have all eight seasons, while Microsoft’s store only has one season). Finally, while there was no option for this on Game of Thrones, JustWatch will also list where people can rent content.

Watch lists, what’s new and other useful tools

However, listing where people can find and stream content is only one feature of JustWatch. The platform also offers a watch list tool and the ability to track how many episodes of a show you’ve watched. Users can rate content as well, which can help it surface recommendations.

Speaking of recommendations, users can also tell JustWatch which streaming services they have. Doing so lets the app filter content so it doesn’t recommend something that’s not available to you.

How to search every streaming site at once with roku search

Finally, JustWatch has sections for browsing ‘popular’ content, as well as a ‘New’ section that lists new arrivals on your streaming platforms. The platform is ad-supported, but customers can upgrade to the ‘Pro’ version to remove ads and get a few other quality-of-life features. JustWatch Pro costs $2.99 per month.

Overall, I’d say that JustWatch isn’t a perfect app, or arguably even necessary. But being able to quickly look up a movie and see what streaming platforms it’s available on has made picking something to watch much, much easier. Hopefully, it’s something that helps you too.

JustWatch is available via the web, through free Android and iOS apps, and through other platforms (such as directly on some smart TVs).

Update 11/09/2021 at 9:30am ET: Added a link to JustWatch’s apps page for easier access to the service on multiple platforms.

Roku’s live TV app displayed on the home screen in Roku OS 10.5. Roku

Roku is making finding stuff to watch more of a breeze by expanding voice command support and making it easier to watch free live TV.

With the Roku OS 10.5 update, Roku device owners will be able to access the live TV guide — which now boasts more than 200 channels to stream for free — faster by pinning it to their home screens alongside their other apps and channels. After updating, users just need to search for “Live TV on The Roku Channel” and will be able to install it as they would any other app or streaming service.

Additionally, for those who navigate the Roku experience using voice commands, Roku says its voice command support extends to “nearly any channel” in search. That includes Spotify and Netflix as well, two previously notable exceptions that are now supported. Plus, a new music and podcast row in search should make navigation a little easier as well. With the update, Roku is partnering with Spotify for the launch of the new search integration.

And lastly, Roku users may have noticed its mobile app recently got a bit of a facelift. In mid-August, the company began rolling out new save list and home tab features. Users will find the latter to the left of the Roku Channel tab on the bottom panel. The save list, meanwhile, can be found from both the home and remote tabs on mobile, and Roku users can bookmark anything they might be interested in watching in the future by clicking on the title and selecting “add to save list.”

Roku OS 10.5 will begin arriving on Roku devices in the coming weeks.

Update September 20th, 3:50PM ET: This article has been updated to clarify that the 10.5 update that allows Roku users to pin the Live TV tile to their home screens is specific to Roku streaming players. Roku TV owners have had this capability since Live TV’s launch in 2020.

How to search every streaming site at once with roku search

Roku

How to search every streaming site at once with roku search

How to search every streaming site at once with roku search

How to search every streaming site at once with roku search

How to search every streaming site at once with roku search

How to search every streaming site at once with roku search

How to search every streaming site at once with roku search

How to search every streaming site at once with roku search

If you’ve just bought a new TV, or are rescanning to get NewsChannel 5, please follow the instructions below. Have a different brand of TV? Head to our antenna home and select the model of TV you own.

There are dozens of models of Roku TVs. The instructions below cover the most popular models, but may not work for all.

These instructions are for a TCL-branded Roku TV, but also work for other brands of Roku TVs as well, as they all share very similar interfaces.

Each TV manufacturer uses a different term to describe a rescan. Most Roku TV’s call their rescan function “Scan for Channels” or “Set up input”

TRY THESE FIRST. If you’ve been into your TV’s settings before, these instructions should help you rescan your TV.

1. Select “Home” on your remote
2. Choose “Settings” from the menu on the left
3. In the Settings menu, select “TV Inputs.”
4. Select “Antenna TV” (This may say “Broadcast TV” on some models)
5. Select “Set up input.” (This may say “Scan for Channels” on some models)

ALL ROKU TV MODELS — This includes most TCL TV’s within the past few years

Most modern TCL TV’s are also known as “Roku TV’s” and have a very similar remote and interface. As a result, the instructions below should work for all Roku TV models, although there could be slight variations.

1. Select “Home” on your remote to bring up the menu. (This is also most likely the screen that appears when you start up your TV)

2. In the menu on the left, select “Settings”

3. Select “TV Inputs” in the settings menu

4. Select “Antenna TV” (This may say “Broadcast TV” on some models)

5. Select “Set up input.” (This may say “Scan for Channels” on some models)

That’s it! Enjoy your antenna!

You can also find more instructions for your specific TV model on TCL’s support page.

Roku has introduced Roku Search, a new way to navigate the Roku Channel store’s burgeoning content

While we’ve been big fans of Roku’s streaming devices, including the Roku 3 and Roku Streaming Stick, one complaint we’ve levelled against the streaming company was the lack of a search feature. A feather in Roku’s cap is certainly its extensive support for apps (or as Roku call them ‘Channels’) including a host of on-demand services including BBC iPlayer, ITV Player, Demand Five and All4 and premium services such as Sky’s Now TV.

However, the inability to perform a basic search meant you had to manually navigate through densely populated channel categories to find the content you wanted. Further adding to the frustration was the inability to add new channels via the web interface in the UK, which would have alleviated the issue.

Updated Roku software

Roku has at least made strides to tackle the problem with its new update that will be hitting all of Roku’s devices starting from today. The new software update will introduce ‘Roku Search’, which brings with it the ability to search for individual channels, so if you know there’s an obscure channel you want to add, such as the multitude of foreign channels available, it will be much easier to now find.

How to search every streaming site at once with roku search

Additionally, Roku Search will also be a new content discovery platform allowing you to search for content to watch based on actors and directors or to search specifically for movies or television shows. Content such as films or television shows are listed based on the channel they’re available through and it makes it easy to see if you need to add a new channel for access or if a separate subscription is needed, such as for services including Netflix. At launch the only channels to integrate into Roku Search will be Netflix, Snagfilms and Popcornflix but this is set to include more over time.

How to search every streaming site at once with roku search

The new update also brings with it ‘Roku Feed’, which will allow users to subscribe to movies that are coming soon. This pulls together updates into a constantly updating timeline-style feed so that you know when content becomes available on any of Roku’s channels, as well as letting you know about changes in pricing if it’s available for rent.

We were given an advance look at the new search functionality and Roku Feed and it immediately overcame our main issues with Roku’s software. We could see how it would improve the user experience making it easier to find the content you wanted to watch and removing some of the frustration of navigating through a lot of content. The new search functionality will be rolled into the Roku app updates for iOS and Android, which will also make inputting search terms easier.

New Roku 2

Available in early May, Roku has also announced an updated version of the Roku 2. The Roku 2 matches the internal specifications and performance of the Roku 3 but comes with a less fully-featured remote control that is devoid of the motion sensing capabilities of the Roku 3’s. It will, however, include new shortcut buttons to popular channels such as Netflix and YouTube. The new Roku 2 will be available for £69.99 when it launches. We’ll be sure to give it a review when it’s available as well as give more hands-on time with the new software update.

With more than 2,000 channels, finding content on Roku can be difficult. To help, Roku has a search feature that is accessible from the Roku home screen. With Roku’s search engine you can search on the name of a movie or TV show, or that of an actor or director. You can also search for a specific Roku channel.

The primary drawback to Roku’s built-in search is that it returns results for only 15 channels, all but three of which require you to pay a subscription fee, video rental fees, or subscribe to a participating cable or satellite TV service. The channels searched are:

  • Acorn TV (Subscription)
  • Amazon Instant Video (Subscription or rental)
  • Blockbuster On Demand (Rental)
  • CinemaNow (Rental)
  • Crackle (Free)
  • FXNOW (Cable/satellite service required)
  • FOX NOW(Cable/satellite service required)
  • HBO GO(Cable/satellite service required)
  • Hulu Plus (Subscription)
  • M-GO (Rental)
  • Netflix (Subscription)
  • Popcornflix (Free, or rent ad-free)
  • Snagfilms (Free)
  • Time Warner Cable (Cable/satellite service required)
  • Vudu (Subscription)

Just select “Search” from the main menu, then enter the movie, TV show, actor, director, or Roku channel. If you’re searching for a movie or TV show that’s available on one of the above channels, you’ll be presented with a list of suggestions based on your search. Select a title, and you’ll see a list of the channels (limited to those above) that offer that video, along with the price (if any) on each service. Select the channel you want to watch on, and you’ll be taken directly to that channel.

If you searched for an actor or director, the search results will return a complete filmography for the person you select from the suggestion list. Select a title from that list of films and TV shows, and you’ll find film information (director, leading actors, year of release, run time, and a story synopsis) along with a list of channels (again, limited to those above) that offer that title.

Another useful function of Roku’s search is that it will also return channel names from the complete list of those in the Roku Channel Store. Click on the result, and you will be taken to that channel, or given the opportunity to install it if you haven’t done so already. Channels are searched on exact name only, so this won’t help you if you’re looking for channels on a specific topic. However, if you know the name of a channel and don’t want to browse through the entire channel store or your My Channels list, this feature will help you get to that channel.

But what to do if you want to find videos on a specific topic, or find a specific movie title on a channel other than the 15 above? Currently, there is no cross-channel search function that will find content across all Roku channels. You can start by searching RokuGuide.com using the search box near the top of the right hand column on all RokuGuide.com pages. Our channel reviews include only a few video titles, so you’ll have better luck searching on a subject. For example, if you’re looking for children’s sing-along videos, a search on “sing-along” returns six channels, including private channels, with this subject matter.

If you still can’t find what you’re looking for, send us a message using the Contact Us page. Due to the volume of mail received, we cannot answer every request or try to find obscure titles, but we will try our best to offer suggestions.

Disney Plus is one of the hottest services out there which comes with a huge catalogue of exclusive movies and content to its subscribers. The platform also comes with some exciting bundle deals, making it a preferred choice among most users. Interestingly, it can also be added to your Roku TV using the online Roku Channel Store and found on the Roku home screen under streaming channels. The service is supported on a range of Roku TV models; however, there have been several instances where users encountered issues running it on their devices.

Disney Plus not working on Roku

A number of Roku users have complained that they have been facing issues while trying to get Disney Plus to run on their devices. The issue has been raised by many users over the past; however, it can be caused due to specific reasons.

Now, before we focus on the solutions, you should note that Disney+ is available on Roku only in a few countries like the United States and Canada. So, the first thing you need to do is to make sure that Roku offers Disney Plus in your country. If it is available in your country and you are still having trouble, you can try out the steps detailed below.

How to fix the issue?

If you are having issues trying to run Disney Plus on Roku, the first thing you need to do is perform a system restart. Once you have done that, you need to update it to the latest version. To perform a restart, follow this path – Settings > System > System restart. To perform a system update, follow these steps – Settings > System update.

If that doesn’t seem to resolve the issue, you need to unplug the Roku device from the power outlet, then plug it back in after about a minute. In most cases, this should resolve the issue. However, if you are still facing the issue, you can follow these simple steps.

Step 1: Go to your Roku home screen and select ‘Disney+’

Step 2: Press the star button on the remote and click on ‘Remove channel’ to delete the service.

Step 3: Now, go back to the home screen and use the search bar to search for Disney+ and add it back to the device.

Step 4: Click on the ‘Add Channel’ button to add it back. This should fix the issue for most users.

A number of users have also been facing a Disney Plus error 401 on their devices, However, one should note that this error code denotes device incompatibility and it can be faced across various devices and platforms. In this case, all you need to do is check the Disney Plus software and device compatibility list on Disney Plus’ official website.

This is the way search should work. You don’t want to guess if The Big Lebowski is on Netflix or Amazon; you just want to watch it.

How to search every streaming site at once with roku search

This morning, all newish Roku boxes–that’s the Roku 2, Roku LT, and some older Roku HDs–got an update to support one-stop search. Right on the homescreen, there’s a new search option that’ll trawl through Netflix, Amazon Instant Video, Hulu Plus, Crackle, HBO Go, and Vudu. It’s one of those things that sounds small but that’s actually pretty big–one-stop search is a major tool in unifying what used to be disparate standalone apps, which means it’s a major tool towards making streaming media easier and less awkward to use.

Netflix and Hulu and Amazon and all the rest are great services by themselves, but keeping them in their own walled app makes “streaming media” as a concept much harder to use. There’s no one app that’ll do everything, which is why many choose to subscribe to several at once–Hulu for next-day TV shows, Netflix for movies, Amazon for a grab-bag of stuff and also to buy shows not found on the others. But there are lots of shows and movies that could be on any combination of those services, and it’s pretty awkward to open each app and search.

The Xbox 360, an under-appreciated media streamer in its own right, has had unified search for awhile. And it’s actually better than Roku’s; Roku requires you to use the Roku remote, which is kind of awful, to very slowly and painfully navigate to each letter on the on-screen keyboard. The Xbox lets you use the Kinect and just yell out loud in the direction of the TV that you want to watch eight episodes of The West Wing, right now. But Roku’s works well otherwise: it searches quickly and shows you all the available options, including both paid and free, and whether they’re in HD or only standard-def. If you search for a TV show, it’ll let you narrow your search to just the specific season you want.

Remote notwithstanding, it works very well. And anything that makes the sometimes-difficult world of media streaming easier to use is something that takes us one step closer to our connected-TV future.

How to search every streaming site at once with roku search

How to search every streaming site at once with roku search

Having trouble getting Netflix up and running on your Roku streaming device? Sometimes it seems to have a mind of its own. However, there might be a specific reason why your Netflix app may stop working, and there are plenty of easy fixes. While we can’t diagnose your specific problem, here’s everything we recommend when Netflix is not working on your Roku device.

We’ll start with the most common fixes and work our way to the more drastic measures. You could be facing a hardware issue, and our Roku deals offer a few great chances to upgrade instead. In the meantime you can sign up for Netflix at the link below:

Check your network settings

How to search every streaming site at once with roku search

One of the most common reasons Netflix does not work on your Roku device is if you’re not connected to the internet. It may sound simple, but there’s always a chance you disconnected accidentally. If you believe that to be the case, follow these steps:

  1. From the home screen, scroll to the Settings menu.
  2. Open the Network section to check your Roku’s connection status.
  3. If it says that you’re connected, use the Check Connection button to test the strength.

If your Roku appears to be humming along just fine, you might find that the problem lies in your router instead. Luckily this is once again an easy fix, and you should be able to reboot your connection in a few minutes. You might also find that your Roku device works better with an Ethernet connection. If you’re still having connection issues, look at the Roku support page for more information.

Restart your Roku

Sometimes the simplest answer really is the right one. In this case, turn your Roku off and turn it back on again. No, seriously. Turn your streaming device off, unplug it and leave it to sit for a minute or so. This should allow your Roku to soft reset — quit out of all of your apps and clear the RAM. Now, plug it back in and fire your Roku right back up. You shouldn’t have problems with Netflix not working now.

Check for updates

How to search every streaming site at once with roku search

Another reason you may not be able to get Netflix to work on your Roku streaming device is if either one needs an update. Some apps tend to act up, especially if you haven’t updated them in a while. Your Roku should check for updates pretty regularly whenever you turn it on, but you can always manually check for them as well. Here are the steps to follow:

  1. Navigate to the Settings menu from your home screen.
  2. Locate and enter the System option and choose the Software Update selection.
  3. Last, click on the Check Now button. This will check for updates to the Netflix app as well as the Roku system.

Netflix not working on Roku? Check your Netflix account

How to search every streaming site at once with roku search

If Netflix is not working on your Roku, the problem may have nothing to do with the device itself. In fact, there’s always a chance that the fault lies within your account. Whether you recently changed your payment methods or your account only supports a few simultaneous streams, there’s a lot that can go wrong.

As you know, Netflix charges more money for the ability to stream on multiple devices at once. While we love our family and friends, sometimes you have to show some tough love and kick them off your account. Well, that or tell them to start chipping in for a more powerful plan.

Delete and redownload the Netflix app

How to search every streaming site at once with roku search

One last way to get Netflix back up and running on your Roku device is to delete and reinstall the app. Think of it as turning it off and turning it back on again, but for software. Just note, the process is slightly different depending on what Roku device you have. Here are a few of the most common ways to remove Netflix:

Remove from your channel lineup

  1. Press the Home button on your Roku remote.
  2. Navigate to the right until you find the Netflix channel.
  3. Press the Star button on your remote to open the options menu.
  4. Select the Remove channel option and confirm when prompted.

Remove from within the Roku Channel Store

  1. Press the Home button on your remote.
  2. Select the Streaming Channels button to open the store.
  3. Locate Netflix from the store menu and press the OK button.
  4. Select the Remove channel option and confirm when prompted.

There you go, a few ways to reset Netflix, update your Roku, and check your account status. If none of these methods has helped you, it might be time for a new streaming device. On the bright side, there are plenty to choose from.

Find Movies and TV Shows Using Roku Search

You can easily find anything to watch as you are available with several options such as the latest TV shows movies and cult classes. Roku Search allows you to search for more than 1,50,000 TV episodes and movies from top paid and free channels available on Roku.

All you have to search for the title of the TV show or a movie. You can also search by the name of the director or actor as well. You can also voice search or search through the Roku mobile application.

Searching on Roku enables you to make a search on top channels for finding TV shows or movies, which are both free and paid. A number of results from top channels will appear in front of you together with their prices.

Tip: You should look for the genre or TV show that you are interested in watching and not the latest releases or ones that are popular among people. The Roku search results will show up a large variety of contents in genres like niche, international, sports, news, and comedy.

Use on-screen keyboards or your Smartphone’s keyboard for typing words and phrases in the Roku search bar or you can speak a word or phrase in a conversing tone using a voice search.

Points to Remember:

You can use Roku search and type something or speak up something and find movies and tv shows using Roku search in the English language in the United States of America, Canada, and the United Kingdom.

Channels that are covered in the search results may differ from region to region. Look for the Roku search partners. Although you may have to make a payment for having an access to a channel or in order to view certain content.

Use On-screen Keyboard to Find Movies and TV Shows Using Roku Search:

Press the button of a home on the Roku remote. Go up and down using the navigation buttons and then go to search. Start entering the first few letters of the channel, director, actor, TV show, or movie and the Roku search results will show up in front of you.

Once you are able to locate the TV channel or entertainment choice. Choose the entry to see the information including the options to see. In case you select a viewing option on a channel that you have not installed on your Roku device, then you will be asked to add another channel.

Use Your Mobile Device to Find Movies and TV Shows Using Roku Search:

You can search on your tablet or smartphone and get access to the channels by opening up the free Roku mobile application. Open the Roku mobile applications and adhere to the instructions given below.

In order to take a look at a full list of search results, which includes the channels. Tap on What’s on by going to the bottom of the screen. If you only want to search channels and you only want channels to appear in the search results, then tap on channels and then go to channel store.

Get access to the search page. Go to the page of What’s on and then tap on the search icon that is placed on the top of the screen.

After that, the keyboard will open up in front of you. First, you need to type the initial letters of the movie, channel, director, actor, or TV show. When the entertainment choice you were looking for appears in front of you.

If you wish to read news headlines from various news channels, then all you need to do is to enter today’s date that is 17 January. Although you need to make sure that there are spaces between the day and month to view the news results. Once again,

If you select a viewing option on the channel, which is not installed on the Roku channel, then you will be asked to add that channel.

So, these are some of the steps that you need to follow to find movies and tv shows using the Roku search.

You can now search for TV shows and movies on Netflix, Amazon Instant, Vudu, Hulu Plus, Crackle, and HBO Go using Roku’s simple interface.

Roku has long made great, easy-to-use Internet TV streaming boxes. Now it has set itself apart from the pack by adding cross-Internet streaming service searching. I think Roku has its killer app.

If you’re old enough, you recall that VisiCalc was the PC’s first killer app: a program that made the purchase a necessity rather than a “nice to have.” VisiCalc turned microcomputers from toys for hobbyists to tools for enthusiasts. Similarly, Lotus 1-2-3 forced many businesses to buy IBM PCs, because the spreadsheet only ran on that platform.

I think Roku may have found its killer app in its new, integrated search feature. Roku lets you search across Amazon Instant, Crackle, HBO GO , Hulu Plus, Netflix, and Vudu from within the Roku 2, Roku LT, the new Roku HD players, and the Roku Streaming Stick’s display.

I know, I know; it’s such a simple idea. That’s exactly why it’s so killer. We all want to watch our Internet TV programs, but it’s a pain to find which shows are on which services. Sure, programs such as Dijit’s NextGuide and Websites like Clicker can help you find what’s showing on which Internet TV network, but those programs aren’t integrated with your Internet TV media streamer. With Roku, search is now built in.

Say, for example, if I want to find where I can watch Star Trek: The Original Series (TOS). NextGuide or Clicker help me find it on a tablet or my PC, but then I have to “tune-in” into the show on my media streaming device. Or, I could search for Star Trek:TOS on websites or use the various online video network, doing one search after another. This, as we all know, can really be annoying.

Related:

On a Roku, it’s simple. Perform one search, and, faster than at Warp speed, you see that Star Trek:TOS is available on Amazon, Netflix, and Vudu. A click later and I’m looking at the series’ first season episodes; one more click, and I’m watching my show. Now this is how Internet video searching should work!

It’s not perfect. For example, I almost never watch anything from Vudu, but I can’t tell Roku’s search service not to bother to with it. You also have to deal with a hunt-and-click interface with your remote. I usually hate this interface style, but it worked surprisingly well with my Roku remote. It helps that Roku displays search results immediately as you click on each letter. For my Star Trek hunt, once I was past entering “Sta,” I was almost to my goal.

But those are minor quibbles. Just as the TiVo made it easy to search and save TV shows from cable, satellites, and over-the-air, Roku has made it easy to find the shows you want on the Internet with a minimum of fuss and muss.

Steven J. Vaughan-Nichols has been writing about technology and the business of technology since CP/M-80 was the cutting-edge PC operating system, 300bps was a fast Internet connection, WordStar was the state-of-the-art word processor, and we liked it!
