You can share a wired LAN connection with any of your WiFi-enabled devices including your Android phone. This method is very simple, takes very little time and doesn’t require any sort of high-level technical skills.

The latest version of Windows 10 has made it quite easier to create a hotspot and share the internet connection with other devices’ WiFi. The steps are pretty easy and you can get it rolling within a few minutes.

  • Go to Windows Settings >> Network & Internet >> Mobile hotspot.

If you are not using the latest version of Windows then you need the Connectify Hotspot software on the host device, the pro version of the Connectify Hotspot to be more specific. Using the software and following the steps given below, you can create your own customizable hotspot network with which you can share your internet connection with friends and family over WiFi, that too without the need for a WiFi router.

  1. Download the latest version of the Connectify Hotspot Pro on your computer.
  2. Make sure that your PC/ Laptop has native WiFi support or else use a WiFi dongle. A Data card will work too in case you want to share its internet instead of wired LAN.
  3. Run the Connectify Hotspot app and select your LAN network adapter as the ‘Internet to Share’. You can also select other sorts of Wi-Fi, 4G networks, and VPN virtual adapters if in case you want to share your internet connection with them.
  4. Next, give your hotspot network a Name (SSID) followed by a strong enough password.
  5. Furthermore, you can make use of the Adblocker to save your data bandwidth and to prevent annoying pop-ups here and there.
  6. Now simply press the “Start Hotspot” button to create your own personal network using your PC’s LAN or Data card connection.

You can now connect your Wi-Fi enabled devices such as PCs, laptops, tablets, smartphones, and game consoles to your PC’s internet connection. You can also use this software to boost your WiFi range or as a WiFi bridge to save money at certain places while traveling.

3. via Android Reverse Tethering Package

Now if you are not able to use the methods mentioned above then this one is the most complex one. It will require a rooted Android phone and a little bit of Android knowledge.

  1. Download Universal Naked Drivers and Android Reverse Tethering Package.
  2. Enable USB Debugging on your device.(Go to Settings -> Developers Option -> Tick USB Debugging Option)(In case you do not find Developer options on your device, then go to Settings -> About -> Tap on build number for about 7 times, following which a toast notification will indicate that you are now a developer and can tweak with the developer options.)
  3. Next, as mentioned, open the SuperSU application from App Drawer.
  4. Go to SuperSU Settings, tap on Access and then Uncheck show Notifications.
  5. Further, you need to extract the Android Reverse Tethering Package on your PC as linked above. Also, make sure that you already have the Universal Naked Drivers installed on your PC.
  6. Copy all the three APK’s in it to your Phone’s SD card. or Internal Storage.
  7. Install all three applications.
  8. Now, open the Xposed Installer application and click on the Install/Update button. You will be asked to reboot your phone.
  9. After Rebooting. Go to Xposed Installer, navigate through Modules and Check Hack Connectivity Service. (Complete this step if your phone has > Android 4.x.x otherwise, don’t). Then reboot your phone.
  10. After rebooting. Open USB Tunnel from App Drawer. Click on start service.
  11. In your Computer, Navigate to the location where you have extracted the Reverse Tethering Package.
  12. Connect your phone to your PC. (Make sure that USB Debugging is on and you have granted the permissions by clicking on Allow on the pop-up)
  13. Click on Android Tool.exe.
  14. Select your device and click on Connect. You have completed the setup process by now!
  15. Open up the Android browser and you are good to go.

The Connectify 3 has to be installed in your laptop and you will have to write the desired connection name in the SSID. Setup the password you want for the connection and it select the network that you want to share. Also, select the encryption method after the entire process. Switch on the Wi-Fi on your smartphone and connect to the network you have setup.

Android Reverse Tethering

To reverse tether using Android Reverse Tethering, you will have to turn on USB Debugging on your device by going to Settings -> Applications -> Development -> USB Debugging -> Turn On. Then, connect your Android smartphone to your PC. The next step is to open the downloaded Android Reverse Tethering tool, extract it and open the same. Now, open the AndroidTool.exe in the Android Reverse Tethering folder and select your device. You will have to choose a DNS to be used and check the DNS. Install the Hack Connectivity called fake Wi-Fi. Install the same and restart your mobile. Restart your device and activate the service by clicking on the Connect button to start with Android reverse tethering.

Instructions

  1. Download the reverse tethering tools (ReverseTethering 2.30.zip, 3.34 MB) and save the file to your computer. The ZIP file contains AndroidTool.exe (Android USB Tunnel tool for your Windows machine), ADB, and the Android APK (Android USB Tunnel tool for your Android phone).
  2. Extract the ZIP file to a folder on your computer.
  3. Enable USB debugging on your phone by going to Settings > Applications > Development > USB Debugging.
  4. Go to the folder where you extracted the ZIP file’s contents.
  5. Run AndroidTool.exe.
  6. Connect your phone to your PC using a USB cable.
  7. In the Android USB Tunnel window, click on the Refresh Devices button.
  8. From the list on the right of the detected devices, select a Domain Name Server (DNS) to use.
  9. Click the Show Android Interface button. This will install the app and other needed binaries to your phone.
  10. If the Superuser app on your phone asks whether to allow “USB Tunnel,” choose to allow the app. If the process crashes after receiving Superuser rights, close the Android USB Tunnel Windows application and repeat the procedure from the start.
  11. Click on the Connect button on the Android USB Tunnel window on your computer.
  12. Again, if the Superuser app on your phone asks, choose to allow “USB Tunnel.”

So, the app we are using here is called Gnirehtet, which I know sounds absurd but is just “Tethering” spelled reversely. It works on Google’s cross-platform ADB (Android Debug Bridge) software. Now without much ado, let’s get down to the process itself.

Steps to share PC Internet with Android Phone

  • As a prerequisite, download the ADB tool and gnirehtet compressed files from Android Developers and GitHub websites respectively.
  • Next up, unzip both compressed files onto your PC in separate files (one for ADB and the other will be of gnirehtet).

Enable USB Debugging within Developer Settings

This Tut has been Done Using a Windows 10 Pro x64 machine.

The client registers itself as a VPN, in order to intercept the whole device network traffic, as byte[] of raw IPv4 packets, which it transmits to the relay server over a TCP connection (established over adb). The relay server parses the packets headers, open connections from the computer to the requested destinations, and relays the content in both directions following the UDP and TCP protocols. It creates and sends response packets back to the Android client, which writes them to the VPN interface. In a sense, the relay server behaves like a NAT, in that it opens connections on behalf of private peers. However, it differs from standard NATs in the way it communicates with the clients (the private peers), by using a very specific (though simple) protocol over a TCP connection.

uh that’s neat, but why?

There are other ways.

Well, for users who dont have the money to pay for mobile data, and don’t have wifi access in the area.

This might come handly for some.. maybe not for you 🙂

Here, we will do reverse tethering without any software.

USB Internet is a built-in option which is available in specific model devices (I have Micromax mobile and it has this option).

If your device has this option, then you can use this option to reverse tether. This method works on both rooted and non-rooted devices.

Connect Android to the laptop via USB cable.
Go to Settings in your Android phone.
Under Wireless & networks, you can find the option of “USB Internet”. Tap it (you can only able to enable this option if you’ve connected devices via USB).
Choose your operating system.
Click Next. Click on “Done” button.

You can see that the devices are connected and you can see a new adapter (Local Area Connection 2) on your computer. To see new adapter, go to “Run command”(Shortcut: Windows key + R), type ncpa.cpl and press enter.

However, we can’t get an internet connection? Why? Because we’ve not enabled the internet connection sharing yet. Let’s check it out the steps to do that.

Click on “Properties” of internet connection that you want to share (Open Run, type ncpa.cpl, right click on the internet connection and choose Properties).
Navigate to Sharing tab.
Click on the first option and choose the new adapter (Local Area Connection 2) from the drop-down list. Click on “OK” button.

That’s it. Now, you can see that the PC internet is shared with your Android via USB internet option. c

Reverse-Tether Over Wi-Fi

Wi-Fi tethering might be the best idea, just as creating a Wi-Fi hotspot on your phone is a good way to share its mobile data connection. If you’re unable to get your iPhone or iPad online because there’s no Wi-Fi signal near you and you have to connect your laptop or PC to an old-fashioned wired Ethernet connection, this can work well.

So, can you reverse-tether an iPhone or iPad to a Mac or Windows PC over USB, gaining access to the computer’s internet connection from your phone or tablet? It sounds logical, but you can’t normally do this.

Like all sorts of things you can’t normally do on an iPhone or iPad, you can likely do this if you jailbreak the device and go out of your way to hack around.

But we don’t recommend trying this. Instead of reverse-tethering over a USB cable, just create a Wi-Fi hotspot or a Bluetooth PAN to share your Mac or Windows PC’s Internet connection with your iPhone or iPad. It’ll work without any jailbreaking or hacks required. Sure, a wired connection might technically be faster, but the wireless one should be good enough.

These same methods can be used to share an Internet connection from other operating systems, too. For example, Linux PCs also offer the ability to create Wi-Fi hotspots, and you can connect your iPhone or iPad to that hotspot over Wi-Fi.

Bluetooth tethering allows you to share the internet connection with other phones or tablets. However, connecting via Bluetooth can be a slightly more complicated process and is slower than simply connecting via Wi-Fi. However, Bluetooth tethering consumes significantly less battery power compared to Wi-Fi hotspot. Bluetooth Tethering is not recommended for regular. But in the rare case, you can go to Settings > WiFi & Internet > Tethering and enable it on most android smartphones.

WiFi HotSpot Tethering

Alternatively, most people will automatically think of using the smartphone as a personal Wi-Fi network, with the phone acting as an Internet connection hub. Other devices connect through it in the same way as they would a normal wifi network, simply by selecting a device from the available Wi-Fi networks list and entering a password. This enables users to simultaneously connect multiple devices and provides higher Wi-Fi speeds than the Bluetooth method.

Using Wi-Fi Tethering or HotSpot is very simple and quick on android. Go to Settings, tap the more option under Wireless & Networks, and tap Tethering & portable hotspot. Toggle the on switch and add a unique password to make your connection secure.

USB Tethering

USB tethering needs the smartphone is connected to a PC (either laptop or desktop) using a USB cable, which then provides an Internet connection to the PC. This wired method can be a useful alternative as it can provide faster speeds and means the phone can receive power from the PC. The drawback is only one device can be tethered via USB at the same time.

You can enable USB tethering on android from Wireless & Networks > Tethering & portable hotspot under the Settings menu on most android phones. Just make sure the USB connection between your device is up and running properly.

USB reverse tethering = Cellphone gets network connection from PC via USB.

I know how to do USB reverse tethering except for one problem: Many Android apps will check network connection using the code below before doing any useful work:

The problem is that, when using USB reverse tethering, the above code will report no network connection. However, there IS a network connection (which is the USB reverse tethering itself), and ping, wget and all programs not doing this stupid check work well.

So the question is: How can I hack the system to let this network connection check return success (so that I can fool these apps)?

BTW. I use Cyanogenmod 7. And any solution specific to this MOD is also welcome.

If you are doing this much hacking I am assuming that you will probably have your device rooted. If so program a shell interface to send commands to the device shell with JNI and receive STDOUT. Use this interface to run a netcfg command that can be parsed into an array – this will give you all the details the API hides. It also allows you to override Androids device settings using the ipconfig command.

As far as using this to send and receive from your device – in my experience – you will have to probably compile a device specif module that can be loaded into the kernel at run time. Or just download the kernel from the manufacturer and compile the module into the kernel and then flash the phone with the new custom kernel.

To do this , you have to download ReverseTethering_3.19.zip file (Google it to find the link.) Extract to your desired location.

Prerequisite: –

  1. only rooted phones work.
  2. USB debugging should be enabled.

Now connect your rooted android mobile to PC through USB cable.Wait for PC to recognize your mobile. Now open the extracted zip file and open AndroidTool.exe with admin rights.

Now it tries to connect and installs USB tunneling apk on your device.It also asks for super user rights . Grant it.

Now you get the internet on your mobile and usb tunneling app is installed.But you can access only HTTP connections(i.e;) works only in chrome. Play store apps may not work.

So you have to fool apps and make it believe that either is mobile is connected to WiFi or mobile data . Only then apps work.

Now install hack(optional).It installs Xposed framework and installs hack connectivity apk. Just follow the instructions , it is easy. Hack connectivity makes the apps believe that mobile is connected to WiFi or mobile data depending on which type of hack u did after installing Hack connectivity. Finally after hacking ,it asks for reboot. After reboot , you can enjoy internet using USB reverse tethering on all apps.

Is there a way for the phone to access the Internet through the USB connection to the computer? If so, how do I set it up?

I recently discovered SimpleRT which works very well with Linux (and apparently OSX as well). Simply enable USB Debugging on your device (no root required), install the APK linked from that page on your device and connect it to your PC via USB, and then run the binary on your PC.

It will set up the connection as a VPN tunnel ( tun0 by default) and your device should prompt you to (a) allow SimpleRT to create/oversee the VPN connection as well as (b) whether to run it when the device is configured as a particular USB accessory (which is what the binary does).

The project does not include a pre-built binary, so I’ve uploaded one I built for Ubuntu.

For Windows: Install USB drivers from Android SDK

For Linux: Nothing to do

STEP 2:

On Nexus One: Connect USB cable and activate USB Tethering. You should see on linux or windows a new network interface.

There are some more possibilities — but all of them I know of require a rooted device.

First, there’s an App named Reverse Tether available for free on the Play Store (it’s a limited trial, which restricts the time you can be connected — but at least you can test this way whether your device is fully supported; the full version is about USD 5). According to an article at AndroidAuthority, setup should be as easy as 1-2-3: Plug in the USB cable, start the app, let it auto-configure (manual configuration is available as well) — and there you go. You can also let it ask you to connect when it finds an USB-connection.

I know, this is not USB — but for completeness (and giving alternatives) I thought I might add these as well:

Several manual methods are available as well (and described e.g. at XDA) — but they are mostly technically complex, and expecting you to patch system files; not for the every-day-user, but rather for the tech-freak.

Terminal and go

However, another nice method should just involve 3 lines in the terminal, and is described in a post here, to connect to an ad-hoc Wifi network. Basically, it should go like this:

Another quite easy method is also described here, and involves editing the wpa_supplicant.conf file once (manually adding your ad-hoc Wifi network).

Do I need to say, really? Use a Wifi router. There are even some small “Travel routers” around for less than USD 50. And then connect your phone like you use to connect it to other Wifi networks.

No rooting needed!

No app installation needed!* Which is not even possible if you do not have some other internet connection.

There is a project called gnirehtet.

  1. Install adb on to the host PC (Windows/Linux/Mac)
  2. Download the gnirehtet zip-file to the host
  3. Unzip it
  4. Run the command

I am a bit confused how to use it, please inform if you get it working perfectly.

I’ve found a good tool for reverse tethering on xda-developers forum. It’s called Android Reverse Tethering. It works with Windows and requires a rooted phone.
It works fine on my HTC Desire HD running MIUI v4.

Android reverse tethering steps:

Note: Works only in a rooted Android phone.

    Connect Android device via USB.

Enable USB tethering. To do so, go to Settings → More. → Tethering & mobile hotspot → Usb tethering.

At host machine, the usb tethering connection may be detected by the network manager.
Its name will be something like “Wired connection 2” (or 3).
You must edit it’s “IPV4/Method” to “Shared to other computers”.

What You Need to Get Started

Windows 11 actually prompts you to connect your smartphone during its initial setup process. Assuming you didn’t do so at the time, we’ll take you through the procedure and call out a few things you should know before you start.

One important requirement is that you need to install an app on your phone called Your Phone Companion and you need to sign into the app with the same Microsoft account that you’re signed into on your PC.

Another requirement is the phone has to be in Wi-Fi range of the PC because while the apps are running on the phone, display and control occur on the PC.

Additionally, to get any Android-to-Windows 11 functionality at all, you need to be running Android 7 or later. Any Windows 11 PC works. To test the setup, we used a Surface Laptop 3 and a Samsung Galaxy S21 Ultra. The phone model is more important than the PC model in terms of what functions you get.

When you connect an Android device to a Windows 11 PC, you have two options: Your Phone Companion, which most Android phones support, and Link to Windows, which currently only works with select Samsung models and Surface Duo phones (Opens in a new window) . Comparing the two options, Link to Windows offers far more functionality, like mirroring Android apps on the PC (note this is different from the much-touted ability of Windows 11 to run Android apps, in which the apps actually run on the PC hardware).

Step-by-Step: How to Connect Your Android and Your PC

Open Settings. Go to the Bluetooth & devices section and scroll down to Your Phone. Click it, and right away you see an advantage for Android phones. An option slider offers “Show me suggestions for using my Android phone with Windows.”

I hear a notification beep, when I check it is my favorite Network Provider Safaricom alerting me to the fact that my data bundle has been depleted. You see I like having my phone’s data connection so that I do not miss anything. Some of you would say that, that is pretty expensive, well true it is very expensive hence the reason for this post.

On my laptop I have a dedicated unlimited high speed internet connection which I am thinking I can share with my phone. Why not? It would save me so much if I just connect my mobile to my laptop wifi. In your case, we are going to do what we call Reverse Tethering that is How to Connect your Mobile to your Laptop WIFI.

So lets get started.

Sharing internet connection between your mobile device and your laptop is something that we have all done at some point. Traditional tethering involves using a cell phone as a modem to get a laptop or tablet online. In this case we want to connect your Android phone or iPhone, tablet, or other mobile device to your laptop WIFI. We will achieve this by a concept known as Reverse Tethering.

Why Reverse Tether

Some of you might ask why we would want to that, why not just use our phones 3G or 4G interface. Well, fro m my experience above you get a pretty good reason why.

The following situations might apply:

  • You office IT department has probably blocked Wi-Fi connections to mobile phones because of an Company Policy but you can access internet from your laptop Wi-Fi or Ethernet Connection.
  • Internet access is basically faster over Wi-Fi than on 3G/4G especially if you have a dedicated connection like the one I boast.
  • You love travelling and you are at a destination where the hotel has only one wired Ethernet Internet connection and no Wi-Fi, bummer.

How to Connect your Mobile to your Laptop WIFI

Say you are connected to your internet at the office using wire and what we are basically doing is turning your laptop into a Wi-Fi hotspot. Doing this for other laptops is easy, I will do a short post about it, be sure to check back regularly.

On Windows: Using Internet Connection Sharing (ICS): ICS is built into machines running Microsofts range of Operating Systems from Windows 98 and above. Using Internet Connection Sharing is fun and you can see an example where I share my modem connection from my PC.

On Windows 7: Use Connectify (Preferred): When connecting your Mobile device to your Laptop Wi-Fi you won’t be able to use the same Wi-Fi that connects you to the Internet to share it unless you use a third-party application like Connectify.

Connectify from the description on their site – Share 3G / 4G, boost Wi-Fi, and more with our software router, Connectify Hotspot, or combine all your Internet connections with Connectify Switchboard. Connectify is available for all devices that run Windows 7 and above. It offers advantages such as it is the most secure method for sharing you connection, since it offers WPA2 encryption instead of WEP which even teenagers nowadays know how to crack.

Instructions to Connect your Mobile to your Laptop WIFI:

  1. Download and install Connectify (from CNet).
  2. Click on the Connectify logo in the Notification Tray at the bottom right of your desktop (the icon looks like a radio wave).
  3. Select the Internet connection you want to share.
  4. Now you’ll create a wi-fi hotspot: choose a name for your wireless network.
  5. Choose a wireless password. The network is encrypted with WPA2-AES encryption.
  6. Select “Access Point” mode to turn your laptop into a wi-fi access point; if it’s not available you’ll have to choose “Ad Hoc”, which is less secure and has other limitations (learn about ad hoc wireless networks)
  7. Click the Start Hotspot Sharing button to turn on the wi-fi network
  8. On the client devices, you should be able to see the new wi-fi network you just created and use standard wi-fi connection instructions to connect to that wireless network.

On Windows/Android: How to connect your Android Phone to your Laptop WIFI – requires apps installed on your Android Phone. There are several apps that are available in the Google Play Store. All you have to do is search for the term Reverse Tethering and you should see a bunch of Apps returned.

Alternative: Wireless Travel Routers

This is for the non-techie–if at all the above instructions do not work for you, or you don’t want to install any third-party software on your laptop, or maybe the IT department has given you a standard user account and you do not have installation privileges then you can purchase an inexpensive travel router. The best that I have tried and tested is the NETGEAR Trek N300 Range Extender and Travel Router (PR2000) shown below, which is so small it can fit in your pocket. Hi guys! I made a USB tethering and reverse tethering app that doesn’t require root. It also doesn’t require you to enable USB debugging (except on Windows, I’ll try to fix that in a future release). It uses USB accessory mode which can make it faster than apps that use ADB.

Tethering
This allows you to share your device’s wifi or mobile internet connection with your PC. You can use this if your carrier or data plan doesn’t allow you to enable the built-in tethering feature of your device. Or if you have unlimited data plan, but your carrier caps your hotspot/tethering usage to a certain amount, say 7GB.

Reverse Tethering
This feature allows you to share your PC’s internet connection with your device. I use this to reduce lag when playing online games because my room has an unstable wifi signal and my PC is already connected to the internet via an ethernet cable. You can also use this if you’re in a place where your PC has access to wired internet and there’s no wifi available.
Note: Some apps only check for wifi or cellular connectivity, thus will not work when reverse tethering.

Network
When tethering or reverse tethering, your PC along with all connected devices will be in the same network. This means a device can communicate with your PC and other connected devices. This is useful if you want to transfer files from one device to another or if you want to access a server (e.g. HTTP server) on your PC from your device.
Note: ICMP is currently not supported so the ping command will not work when tethering or reverse tethering.

Whether you’re working from your backyard, a park, or a bus, there are times when you need a Wi-Fi connection on your laptop and you’re out of range of a network or public hotspot. Never fear: As long as you have your phone handy, you can deliver a personal and private network to your tablet or laptop in seconds.

To get started, you’ll need to go to the network settings on your phone. It’s called different things depending on which Android phone you’re using—Network & Internet on Android 10, Connections on One UI on Galaxy phones, etc.—but it’ll be where you select your Wi-Fi network. Inside, look for a tab that says hotspot or tethering.

The Personal Hotspot settings let you broadcast your mobile connection as a Wi-Fi signal to any device.

There will be three options: Mobile Hotspot, Bluetooth tethering, and USB tethering. Here’s how each of them works:

Mobile/Wi-Fi hotspot: This is the method you’ll probably be using the most. As soon as you flip the toggle to on, your phone will begin sending out its own WLAN network that other devices can find in their network list. By default, a random password will be assigned, but both that and the name can be changed. To connect, simply choose the correct name on your other device, type in the password, and you’ll be connected to the Internet.

Bluetooth tethering: When you set up a mobile hotspot, anyone is able to jump on to your phone’s network if they know your password. By tethering you can keep it private. First, you’ll need to pair your phone with the device you want to share your connection with, so head over to your Bluetooth settings, tap Pair new device, and select the device you want to pair.

Then head back to your phone’s network settings and flip on the Bluetooth tethering toggle. Next, you’ll need to go to your laptop and select Bluetooth PAN as your network connection and connect to your Android phone. That will initiate the tethering, and you can use your phone’s mobile data on your laptop. Just note: This method is significantly slower than a hotspot, but will use less battery life.

USB tethering: This option will appear grayed-out unless you have a USB-C cable connecting your phone to your laptop. Once plugged in and flipped on, it should be automatic, with your computer instantly recognizing the new network and connecting to it.

Obviously, whatever work you do will use your allotment of mobile data, so if you have a limited plan, be mindful of what you’re doing. Websites and email will be fine, but streaming video might be an issue, especially as 5G plans become more commonplace. So keep an eye on your data use.

The answer may not work on your phone. The following worked on my phone

My phone was Google Nexus 6P running factory standard Android 8.x Oreo

This process is called USB reverse tethering. Not all phones support it. Some Android phones have to be rooted for this to work. There are some guides in the links below.

You may need an app on your phone. I didn’t need it.

My phone is not rooted. This is what I did:

First, find the MAC address of the USB port you will use

Connect your phone to your PC using an USB cable.

  1. Turn USB tethering on in your phone. This will use your phone’s mobile data to connect the PC to the Internet. This is not what we want, but this will give us the device address we will use later.
  2. Open the Network Manager edit window from the Network icon on the top right corner.
  3. Highlight the USB connection. It may be called Ethernet Connection 1 or Ethernet Connection 2 .
  4. Click on the Edit button and go to the Ethernet tab.

Press cancel button to get out of the Network Edit menu. Do not close the Network Connections window yet.

  • In your phone turn off USB tethering.
  • Second, setup a new network connection

    Click Add in network connections:

    Give the new connection a new name if you want.

    Go to the Ethernet tab and paste the device information you copied.

    Third, Test with your phone

    1. In your phone, turn off mobile data, and WiFi while connected by USB to the PC.
    2. Surf the web and use other Internet connected apps.

    It looks like the USB port gets a random Ethernet MAC address every time it is plugged in. If this is the case, you will have to first find the MAC address and then edit the saved settings every time you want to do this.

    Now that you have the app installed on both of your devices, open the application on both devices to get started. Once PdaNet has loaded up, click the “Run As Server (Phone)” button on your data enabled smartphone. In addition, click the “Run As Client (Tablet)” button on your tablet. PdaNet does a nice job of keeping the instructions nice and simple. So now, the last thing you have to do is click the “Set Network Proxy”button on your tablet. Once your tablet discovers your phone via Bluetooth, simply tap on your phone to finish the connection. Please “Make sure you clear proxy settings when you are done with using PdaNet so that network connections will be back to normal. Do not uninstall PdaNet without doing this!”

    PdaNet claims that the regular PdaNet app is capable of sharing data speeds up to 100 MB/s. However, the tablet application is a different connection entirely. So don’t worry if you do not see 4G speeds on your tablet.

    Sharing the internet data connection available on your mobile smartphone with your Windows PC through a USB cable is called USB tethering. In other words, if you’re wondering “what is USB tethering?”, the answer is quite simple: it’s a way of using your Android smartphone as a modem or router to get mobile internet via USB on any PC. Say you have access to a Wi-Fi network in your home but your desktop PC doesn’t have a wireless card in it. You might want to use your Android’s USB tethering feature to establish a connection between them. Or, what if you find yourself in a situation where you don’t have any internet access except for your generous mobile data plan on your Android phone. You might want to give some of that to your Windows computers and devices, right? Here’s how to share internet from an Android phone to any PC via USB:

    NOTE: To create this guide, we used a Huawei P20 smartphone running Android 10. Although some screenshots might differ a bit on a smartphone running another flavor or version of Android, most settings should look and work the same.

    Step 1. Enable internet on your Android smartphone

    The first thing you should do is make sure that your Android smartphone has internet connectivity. The easiest way to do that is from the Quick settings panel. To get to it, swipe with your finger from the top of the screen – if you don’t see it, swipe twice. Then, on the actions panel, look for the Wi-Fi or Mobile data buttons and tap on the internet connection that you want to enable and use as the internet source for USB tethering.

    The Settings app also offers you an alternative method to enable the internet connection on your Android. Slide your finger from the top of the screen and tap on the Settings button. It’s the one that looks like a small gear. For more ways to open Settings, read: 5 ways to get to the Android Settings menu.

    Then, if you want to use a wireless network to connect to the internet on your Android, go to Wi-Fi, turn it on, select and connect to a Wi-Fi network.

    If you don’t have Wi-Fi access or if you prefer to use your mobile data plan as the internet source for USB tethering, on the Settings screen, go to Mobile network. Look for an entry called Mobile data and make sure that its switch is turned on.

    Step 2. Connect your Android smartphone to your Windows PC using a USB cable

    Use a USB cable to connect your Android smartphone to your Windows PC. If you still have it, it’s preferable that you use the original USB cable that you received with your Android smartphone. If you use a desktop PC, it’s also recommended to use one of the back USB ports to plug the USB cable. They are usually faster and more reliable than those on the front.

    Step 3. Turn on the USB tethering feature on your Android smartphone (share internet from Android to PC)

    Once you’ve connected your Android smartphone to your Windows PC, get back to your smartphone and open its Settings again. Then, go to the Mobile network and tap to open the Tethering & portable hotspot settings panel. There, turn the USB tethering switch on.

    Step 4. Wait for a moment or two until your Windows PC installs the required drivers

    On your Windows PC, you might see the operating system install a series of drivers that are necessary for the USB tethering to work. That’s because your Android smartphone works as a USB modem and your Windows PC needs the appropriate drivers for it. This process should be done in a moment, and it’s something that takes place only the first time you use your Android smartphone to connect to the internet on your PC through a USB cable.

    That was it! Now you should have internet connectivity on your Windows PC, through the USB cable that is connected to your Android smartphone or tablet. Open your favorite web browser and start browsing the web.

    Ending with a warning or two

    Although connecting to the internet through your Android smartphone’s USB connection is easy, keep in mind the following points:

    • If you’re using your mobile data plan, that can incur high costs if you overstep your plan’s boundaries, depending on your contract with the mobile operator.
    • While using your smartphone’s internet connection through USB, the smartphone might charge slower than usual.     I was trying to find a way to connect my iconia via usb with my laptop and use my internet access for instances that wifi isn’t available.

    I searched a lot but there wasn’t any usefull clear guide. So after some failing attempts, finally i managed to succeed (using win 7). Here are the steps:

    *root is required*

    1. install (i used stable version 1.2 but i don’t think 1.4 will make any problems) but do not enable it yet.

    2. Install USB drivers from Android SDK instructions found here: , later you will also need RNDIS drivers because when you connect the tablet with your pc and enable wired tether it will install the drivers. I found working drivers from HTC sync located at C:\Program Files (x86)\HTC\HTC Driver\Driver Files\Win7_x64\htcrndis.inf

    you have to install them manually from the device manager (pick the: HTC Remote NDIS based device)

    3. now that we have completed the installation with Wired Tether (still leave it running), we are ready to proceed to the next step. Open network connections. You will notice that now there is one more. (in my case no1 is local area and no2 local area 5 (the one wired tether created). select the connection you want to share go to properties and enter “sharing tab”. tick “Allow other network users to connect through this computer’s Internet connection” and pick the connection made by wired tether. Hit apply and you will have bridged the two connections.

    4. open any emulator on your tablet and type:

    at ifconfig command you enter an available ip of your router for example if your pc is connected to 192.168.1.7 you can pick 192.168.1.9 that is free.
    at the second line enter the default gateway of your internet connection found under the detailed view of its options.

    Yes, it is possible. I have Ubuntu 11.04, NetworkManager 0.8.4, Android Nexus One phone running Cyanogenmod 7.

    As described by Roman, right-click on the NetworkManager icon and choose “Create new wireless network”. I chose to leave the connection wide open (no WPA, no WEP). My phone was able to see the network right away and I connected without trouble. The bridging was automatically done so I could browse the internet without configuring anything extra.

    The reason why you having trouble with the above method is because stock Android 2.3 doesn’t support ad-hoc networks. To be precise, Android’s wpa_supplicant does not show ad-hoc networks. There are a number of ways to fix this. Google around and go hunting in the xda-developers forums. You will probably need to do some hacking on your phone that is beyond the scope of this answer.

    My personal recommendation: if your phone supports Cyanogenmod, you can install it to get ad-hoc support and other hackish delights. You will need to root your phone, which may or may not be to your taste.

    Another alternative is to try “Infrastructure mode”. After setting up the ad-hoc wireless network as per above, click on the NetworkManager icon, choose “Edit connections”. Hit the wireless tab and Edit the ad-hoc network you just created. Under Mode, choose “Infrastructure”. I am unsure if this will work for you since I don’t have a stock Android phone to test with. My thought is if ad-hoc mode is the problem, then the another mode might be the solution.
