Microsoft Defender SmartScreen works with Intune, Group Policy, and mobile device management (MDM) settings to help you manage your organization’s computer settings. Based on how you set up Microsoft Defender SmartScreen, you can show employees a warning page and let them continue to the site, or you can block the site entirely.

Group Policy settings

SmartScreen uses registry-based Administrative Template policy settings.

Windows 10, Version 1607 and earlier: Administrative Templates\Windows Components\File Explorer\Configure Windows SmartScreen

If you enable this setting, it turns on Microsoft Defender SmartScreen and your employees are unable to turn it off. Additionally, when enabling this feature, you must also pick whether Microsoft Defender SmartScreen should Warn your employees or Warn and prevent bypassing the message (effectively blocking the employee from the site).

If you disable this setting, it turns off Microsoft Defender SmartScreen and your employees are unable to turn it on.

This setting does not protect against malicious content from USB devices, network shares, or other non-internet sources.

MDM settings

If you manage your policies using Microsoft Intune, you’ll want to use these MDM policy settings. All settings support desktop computers running Windows 10 Pro or Windows 10 Enterprise, enrolled with Microsoft Intune.

For Microsoft Defender SmartScreen Edge MDM policies, see Policy CSP – Browser.

Recommended Group Policy and MDM settings for your organization

By default, Microsoft Defender SmartScreen lets employees bypass warnings. Unfortunately, this feature can let employees continue to an unsafe site or to continue to download an unsafe file, even after being warned. Because of this possibility, we strongly recommend that you set up Microsoft Defender SmartScreen to block high-risk interactions instead of providing just a warning.

To better help you protect your organization, we recommend turning on and using these specific Microsoft Defender SmartScreen Group Policy and MDM settings.

At, times, when you try to download a file from the Internet, your Internet Explorer or Ege Legacy browser, may stop it from being downloaded. This is the SmartScreen Filter in action, trying to protect you. SmartScreen offers protection from phishing attacks, socially engineered malware, and drive-by-download attacks too.

If you do not wish to use this feature or if you find that your SmartScreen feature is disabled, then this post will show you how to enable or disable SmartScreen Filter. It is a great feature to keep your computer protected and secure, and it is best always to keep it turned on.

Bypass SmartScreen filter

Internet Explorer

But at times, when you go on to download a file from the Internet using Internet Explorer, the SmartScreen filter will stop you from downloading or opening it. Now if you are very sure that file and the source from where you are downloading it is safe, you may want to bypass the SmartScreen filter quickly, without having to go through the detailed process to turn off or disable the SmartScreen.

Normally when you click on a link to download a file, you are asked –

Do you want to save file from website – Open | Save | Cancel.

You would normally click on Save to save the download to your Downloads folder.

But at times when you click Save to download it, you may see a message –

File is unsafe to download and was blocked by SmartScreen Filter.

Now as I mentioned, if you are very sure that the file and the source from where you are downloading it is safe, you can quickly bypass the SmartScreen filter as follows:

Click on the View downloads button to open the View Downloads window. Here clicking on Options will only let you change the download directory, so it is of not any use to us now.

What you should do is right-click the blocked download. This will open up a context menu that will offer you several options.

Select the one that says Download unsafe file. The download will start. If you wish, you can also report that this file is safe.

Using Group Policy Editor

If your organization would like to stop or prevent bypassing of SmartScreen filter warnings in Microsoft Edge Legacy or Internet Explorer browser on Windows 10, you can do so using the Group Policy Editor.

Run gpedit.msc to open the Group Policy Editor and navigate to the following setting:

Computer Configuration > Administrative Templates > Windows Components> Internet Explorer

Here, in the right side, you will see a Prevent Bypassing SmartScreen Filter Warnings setting. Double-click on it and select Enabled.

This policy setting determines whether the user can bypass warnings from SmartScreen Filter. SmartScreen Filter prevents the user from browsing to or downloading from sites that are known to host malicious content. SmartScreen Filter also prevents the execution of files that are known to be malicious. If you enable this policy setting, SmartScreen Filter warnings block the user. If you disable or do not configure this policy setting, the user can bypass SmartScreen Filter warnings.

Just for your information, here you will also see a Prevent Bypassing SmartScreen Filter Warnings about files that are not commonly downloaded from the Internet setting.

Remember to click Apply after you have made the changes.

Microsoft Edge Legacy

The procedure is the same for Edge browser.

Using Group Policy Editor.

Run gpedit.msc to open the Gropu Policy Editor and navigate to the following setting:

Computer Configuration > Administrative Templates > Windows Components> Microsoft Edge

Here on the right side, you will see a Don’t allow SmartScren Warning overrides setting. Double-click on it and select Enabled.

This setting lets you decide whether employees can override the SmartScreen Filter warnings about potentially malicious websites. Turning this setting on stops employees from ignoring the SmartScreen Filter warnings and blocks them from going to the site. Turning this setting off, or not configuring it, lets employees ignore the SmartScreen Filter warnings about potentially malicious websites and to continue to the site.

Just for your information, here you will also see a Don’t allow SmartScren Warning overrides for unverified files setting.

I hope this small tip makes life easier.

is there anyone that knows if it is possible to change the Internet Explorer SmartScreen filter on multiple clients without doing it manually for every client?

Since I have to enable it on more than 100 clients it would be nice with a feature that made this possible without logging into every client? Thru GPO would be the best I assume.

Turn Off Managing SmartScreen Filter

This policy setting allows the user to enable the SmartScreen Filter, which will warn if the Web site being visited is known for fraudulent attempts to gather personal information through “phishing,” or is known to host malware.

If you enable this policy setting, the user will not be prompted to enable the SmartScreen Filter. You must specify which mode the SmartScreen Filter uses: on, or off.

If the feature is on, all website addresses not contained on the filter’s allow list will be sent automatically to Microsoft without prompting the user.

If the feature is off or you do not configure this policy setting, the user will be prompted to decide the mode of operation for the SmartScreen Filter during the first run experience.

Microsoft’s Internet Explorer 7 and 8 include anti-phishing features to block displaying a phishing website that will trick PC users into revealing personal or financial information. Online phishing scams are often distributed via

that pretend to be from a trusted source but actually direct people to viewing a phishing website. When a phishing website is loaded, your private and financial information is at risk if you enter them.

Anti-Phishing protection in Internet Explorer was first introduced in IE7 and has been replaced in IE8 by a new feature called the SmartScreen Filter. Both versions continue to provide protection against phishing.

How the Phishing Filter in Internet Explorer Works?

While you browse the web, the phishing filter in Internet Explorer runs in the background. With your consent, the anti-phishing feature sends the web address of the site to Microsoft and compares it against lists of known phishing sites. If you are using IE8, the SmartScreen Filter in IE8 compares the site against lists of known malware sites as well.

If the phishing filter discovers the website that you want to view is on the list of known phishing sites, Internet Explorer will display a blocked webpage or the Information Bar in IE7 will appear to notify you that the automatic and unsafe download has been blocked:

How to report a malicious website to the smartscreen filter in internet explorer 9

Data for the phishing filter in IE is submitted to Microsoft in encrypted format over HTTPS protocol. Your IP address or other personally identifiable information is not used to identify, contact or provide advertising to you. If you suspect a website is a phishing website, you can use IE to report a specific website:

If the website contains a download, you have the option to report the malicious download as well. Microsoft SmartScreen web service will analyze and include it on their list of known phishing and malicious websites, after analysis. The same method can be use if Microsoft has flagged a safe site as unsafe. You can report it to them as well for correction.

How to Enable Phishing Filter in Internet Explorer?

If you are using Internet Explorer 8, select the Safety button in IE menu bar. Hover your mouse to “SmartScreen Filter” and then choose “Turn on SmartScreen Filter.” Note that the SmartScreen Filter is enabled by default but if it was disabled by another user, you can always re-enable it:

Final Words

The Phishing Filter or SmartScreen Filter in Internet Explorer is updated often by Microsoft. Use it to help protect your personal and financial information from fraudsters, even if your antimalware or firewall protection offers similar service. You’ll never know which one will catch a phishing website and it’s always better to be safe than be sorry.

Remind your child that they should never share personal information on sites/services with people they do not know, and this includes usernames and passwords. If a site requests their personal information and they are not sure if it is okay to enter it, encourage them to check with an adult first.

SmartScreen will also monitor files downloaded in Internet Explorer and show warnings for any downloads that might put your device at risk. Encourage younger children to ask permission before they download files to a device.

With Cryptolocker number of variants rising each day we had to implement SmartScreen filter using Group Policy in our environment.

Here’s how you can easily configure SmartScreen filter using GPO.

Open Group Policy editor (gpedit.msc)

Navigate to:
Computer configuration | Policies | Administrative Templates | Windows Components | File Explorer

From the right pane select Configure Windows SmartScreen select Enabled and from the dropdown list choose Require approval from an administrator before running downloaded unknown software.

Once policy has been created, you should link the policy to computers container since this is a computer configuration policy.

Since this is a Computer configuration policy it should be applied to a computer containter.

On the other hand if you would like to apply this policy to a user containter you will have to enable Group Policy Loopback processing mode policy setting to be able to apply this policy on a user container.

In this case policy will be applied to all computers/users in that container.

In Group POlicy management navigate to:
Computer Configuration | Policies | Administrative Templates | System/Group Policy

From the right pane choose:
Configure user Group Policy loopback processing mode and select Merge from the dropdown list.

From our experiences with the beta, release candidate and official release (RTM) versions of Windows 7, I must say we’ve come a long way from the days of using National Security Agency (NSA) templates to harden and secure enterprise computers. Starting with Windows Vista, Microsoft started delivering products that were significantly more secure than previous versions out of the box.

In this fast moving internet age, the biggest threats these days come from malicious trojan executables and user laziness. The trojans you can get tricked into allowing into your computer system; the laziness is what happens when users naively lower their default Operating System defenses like disabling the User Account Control (UAC) in Vista and/or Windows 7, turning off automatic patching and deactivating the built-in firewall. The UAC and firewall, by the way, performs the same functions as applications we spend money on with products like Zone Alarm, Norton, McAfee etc. where you get notified if an application is trying to do something fishy.

There are things we can do to increase the security of our systems beyond the default settings, especially if you are going to be deploying Windows 7 in a business environment, whether small, medium of enterprise. The ultimate goal is to provide your users with an Operating System that would not hinder their productivity – they should be able to run their applications with minimal intervention and browse their favorite sites without unnecessary call to the help desk about pages not loading.

  • Use BitLocker: The BitLocker drive encryption utility allows the encryption of any volume on a computer’s hard drive, including the boot and systems partitions and removable media like USB jump drives. BitLocker encryption is built into the menu system so you can right-click and encrypt any volume. As with most encryption applications, you have several options in the method of protection from PIN, passwords and smart cards to the Trusted Platform Module (TPM). The cool thing about BitLocker encryption in Windows 7 is that you can configure it to encrypt removable media by default. Be aware however, that while the encrypted data can be decrpyted on any Windows 7 computer, the media can only be accessed in a read-only mode on Windows XP and Vista computers.
  • Patch Patrol: If you have any third party software installed on your client desktops and laptops, you have got to patch them whenever a patch is available. Windows Update does a good enough job about downloading and installing critical patches for Microsoft software, but you are on your own with non-Microsoft applications. For browsers, Firefox and Opera will automatically check to see if there are updates and patch themselves if needed. As Microsoft gets its act together in terms of securing its Operating Systems, unpatched third-party applications are going to be the entry point of malicious programs in end-user exploitations.
  • Use the SmartScreen Filter: Internet Explorer 8 comes with a so-called smart screen filter which checks the web site you are visiting against a Microsoft database of malicious sites and behavior such as cross-site scripting.
  • Use Anti-Spam and anti-malware software: Yes it’s Windows 7, but it is still Windows. And with Windows, there is no shortage of malicious applications and programs out there waiting to get you – from fake patches and codes to fake “scanning”, music and videos that try to con the user into downloading and executing dangerous software. There are good and free applications out there like the free Comodo Internet Security.
  • Spring Cleaning: As you use your computer and install and remove applications, download files etc., you accumulate stuff that will eventually bog down your system. It is therefore a good practice to occasionally take stock of what you have on your computer. You can run “msconfig” from the “Run” command to see applications that have latched themselves on to automatically start with Windows and disable what you do not need.
  • Backup, Backup: The greatest security to your data is to back up your stuff. In a corporate environment, this can mean the life of the business. Storage is very affordable these days – a 1TB hard drive sells for less than $100.

The internet is swamped with many dangers from spam to malicious software. Aside from the barrage of unsolicited emails, viruses and worms, internet users must also be on the lookout for financially damaging scams, mainly a sophisticated scheme known as phishing.

Most Phishing Scams Arrive Via Email

In general, phishing attacks occur via email. An attacker will contact a probable victim posing as a representative from a legitimate company. Some of them are well prepared, duplicating logos and even domain names to disguise their intentions. The attacker will attempt to lure you to a rogue website, where you’re instructed to enter your credit card information or bank account number. They may claim to need this information for a number of reasons, but will actually use it for criminal purposes.

The current prevalence of phishing has resulted in the antiphishing revolution, which consists of a number of educational processes and tools to help combat these scams. A phishing filter is one such technology that helps to protect you against this increasingly growing crime and prevent the risk of identity theft.

How a Phishing Filter Works

Phishing is a costly crime, but preventing it doesn’t have to be expensive. You can begin protecting yourself from this scam by using the new and improved features of your web browser. Microsoft Internet 7.0 comes included with a built-in feature that scans the web pages and URLs you visit. Similar to a virus scanner or spam filter, it seeks out certain patterns associated with known phishing sites and other internet scams, warning you if these locations have been flagged for performing suspicious operations.

The Internet Explorer phishing filter also includes an online service that helps you block out phishing websites that have become confirmed as phishing sites, keeping your data protected around the clock with new updates on an hourly schedule. Since phishing sites only exist for 24 to 48 hours, this type of service is very critical to the protection of your personal information.

One way to limit the negative impact of phishing is to report this scam whenever you suspect it. Internet Explorer 7.0 allows you to report suspicious websites and scams directly within the browser. With this filter, you can submit the data to Microsoft who will then analyze it. If the website is confirmed as running a scam, this service adds the information to a database in order to keep the community of Internet Explorer users protected.

The technology Microsoft uses takes a different approach than black lists. The fact that phishing sites only stick around for a couple of days makes black listing a very inefficient method. Instead of simply comparing a particular URL to a list of known phishing sites, this technology has the ability determine which sites are legitimate as well. For a suspicious site with an irregular URL that may be impersonating a legitimate bank, the filter will trigger a warning to the user, suggesting that they close the web page.

Aside from the new Internet Explorer, other browsers have also implemented phishing filters into their software, including Opera and FireFox. Security vendors, such as McAfee and Symantec, have included antiphishing technology into their software as well.

Extra Online Protection: Free, Easy, Effective

By Steve Bass | Saturday, October 9, 2010 at 12:09 pm

How to report a malicious website to the smartscreen filter in internet explorer 9This just in: Somebody out there is trying to trick you into clicking a link in an e-mail. Do it and you’ll be delivered to a Web site ready, willing, and absolutely able to damage your PC, steal your passwords, and use your address books.

Just this week, PandaLabs warned of a massive iTunes phishing campaign. E-mails are sent with a well-designed, authentic-looking receipt for $895. Alarmed — and unsuspecting — victims click to see how it happened and they eventually get tagged with the Zeus Trojan.

But I’m Protected

Okay, yes, you already have a security tool. But I have three smart, free, no-fuss browser tools that’ll give you an extra edge against cyber criminals.

I sense you might be resisting. Go along with me for a minute.

You’re asking, legitimately, why I’m suggesting you need more help when I went on so long recently about Norton Internet Security 2011. Two reasons: One, I’m not taking any chances with my PC, and I don’t think you should either. And two, if Norton somehow skips a beat — or you forget to update yoursecurity program for a week — I want someone else to watch both our backs.

Up in the Clouds

My friend Alex, from Sunbelt Software (Vipre Antivirus Premium) just released ClearCloud, a valuable, free tool that monitors your online activity in three ways: In your browser and e-mail program, or if a program’s trying to send details about you to their servers.

ClearCloud works by making a small, benign change to your PC’s Internet settings. When you head for a Web site — by clicking a link in e-mail, typing a URL in your browser’s address bar, or clicking a link on a Web page — ClearCloud looks over the link. If the site’s dangerous, it blocks access.

ClearCloud: Under the Hood

Technically, ClearCloud changes the DNS server settings so traffic is routed through its servers first. I like how I can turn the ClearCloud service on and off, and it uninstalls without doing any damage. ClearCloud is still in beta, a testing phase. Read the ClearCloud FAQ. If you’re interested in this technology, you can also look at Norton DNS, which is in beta as well.

As with any tool that changes your system’s DNS settings, ClearCloud still blocks sites for a couple of hours after it’s disabled or unloaded. You can manually flush the DNS cache by typing “ipconfig /flushdns” at a command prompt (this feature will be included in the final product).

ClearCloud is similar to SpywareBlaster, also a freebie, a tool I used to recommend. But SpywareBlaster uses a static list that’s on your computer and needs to be updated. ClearCloud has a substantially larger database of hazardous URLs–and the list is Web-based and dynamic, so nasty URLs are constantly being added.

ClearCloud versus OpenDNS

ClearCloud and OpenDNS have lots in common. (Read my take on OpenDNS.) The difference is that OpenDNS focuses more on letting you filter sites you don’t want to see, say porn, politics, parked domains, dating, and so on. In the last few weeks, OpenDNS has upped the ante to block more phishing sites than it has in the recent past.

Me, I’m switching to ClearCloud for a few months to try it out. It’s not likely to happen, but I wish OpenDNS would partner with ClearCloud and integrate its list of dangerous sites.

The Layered Approach

There are other freebies to protect you.

The Web of Trust (WOT) has a version for Microsoft Internet Explorer, Mozilla Firefox, Google Chrome, and Apple Safari. Download and install it; it works automatically.

WOT watches out for you.

To my surprise, Firefox’s built-in phishing and malware protection appears fairly often when I land on a dangerous site. I wasn’t even aware the feature existed. (Make sure to turn it by going to the Tools menu and opening Options, then clicking the Security tab and checking the appropriate boxes.)

Firefox’s built-in phishing
and malware Protection

For those of you still using Internet Explorer, turn on the SmartScreen Filter by clicking the Safety button, pointing to SmartScreen Filter, and then clicking Turn On SmartScreen Filter.

Internet Explorer’s SmartScreen Filter

In almost 80 percent of the dangerous sites I’ve visited, Norton Internet Security 2011’s Web protection popped up before the others, warning — and stopping — me from getting to the site. Those Norton missed were spotted by either ClearCloud, WOT, IE’s SmartScreen, or Firefox’s protection.

Norton’s Web site protection.

Using layers of nonconflicting protection — a security suite, such as Norton, Kaspersky, AVG, Panda, and so on — as well as ClearCloud (or OpenDNS), WOT, and Firefox’s built-in tool, I feel super-protected. I urge you do to the same.

Calculate the BACON NUMBER of any celebrity. Just google their name + Bacon number . Challenge: Try and find someone with a Bacon number above “2”.

Search for “Atari Breakout” in Google Images.

“Help me help you. ” Yeah, I realize this is a quote from the Jerry Maguire movie, but it is so valid when it comes to technology help. Here are a few pointers that will allow the technology department to better help YOU! (and get more tickets closed in a reasonable time frame.)

1. Please do a webdesk ticket. This allows us to group locational tickets together as well as prioritize the work for the day. If you catch me in the hall, I probably won’t remember your computer issue by the time I get back in front of a computer. (Yeah, I know, I can’t remember what I had for breakfast most days, so help me out here.)

2. In the ticket, please be as specific as possible. For example: “My computer isn’t working” is NOT a good description. Be detailed. “My computer locks up everytime I click on Internet Explorer”, is a much better description. Also, give me as much information as possible both about the problem AND the hardware that you are having issues with. I would like enough information, so that if I go to your room and you are not in there, I can still duplicate the problem. Also, let me know what hardware: “My Teacher computer (a Dell laptop D620 with Windows XP, it has a red Pulaski County Property ID Sticker # of 1205).

3. I reiterate: give me the red Pulaski County Property ID Sticker # of whatever computer is giving you an issue. I can often remote in from another location and fix an issue. If I can’t remote in, the ticket won’t be closed until I can get to your campus on another day. Also, having the ID sticker #, allows me to check warranty information before I arrive.

4. Watch your nouns. Quite often I get tickets indicating that “my smartboard is not working.” Yet, the issue is with the projector, and not the smartboard. Again, be specific.

5. Look through this blog before posting a ticket. We have several tips and suggestions here that will often allow you to fix the issue yourself. That is the quickest way to get back up and running. We are adding more tips, suggestions, and troubleshooting ideas every week.

6. Phone calls, text messages, yellow sticky notes, emails and catching me in the hall: These are NOT the way to get your problem resolved. PLEASE put in a webdesk ticket. I will get to the issue just as promptly as I can. Utilizing WebDesk ALSO helps us determine recurring issues with specific hardware or locations.

7. Include your login and password in the ticket. No one sees webdesk but the Technology department, so this information is secure. Sometimes, I will “fix” an issue only to find out later that the computer works fine when I login but does not work fine when you login. I have a different set of “rights” on our network, and that often allows things to work for me that would not necessarily work for you. After I fix an issue, I like to login to the computer AS YOU and verify that it works for your login as well as mine.

8. WATCH your email: Often when I get a ticket, I will issue a response with either a solution or a question for more information. This will go to your email. You can respond directly to the email and our system will automatically update your webdesk ticket with the new information. But if you don’t respond, your ticket just sits there until I get back around to it.

9. Please keep the issues related to school hardware as much as possible. We have well over 2,000 computers and peripherals that we support. It is really hard to keep these all running when I get alot of “How do I connect my new home wireless printer to my ipad Air” type questions throughout the day.

10. Check the obvious. Before putting in a ticket that says, “My monitor is not working”. Please check the power cable and make sure it is plugged into the wall AND it is securely plugged into the back of the monitor. And on your computer – REBOOT! Rebooting a computer will often correct an issue. Simple but it WORKS!

Lock SafeSearch. A filter is good, but as any 12-year-old will (probably not) tell you, getting around a simple setting is far too easy. To provide a greater level of protection, you can lock your SafeSearch setting, so that it requires your login to change. From your Settings page, click on SafeSearch Lock, as shown:

  • You’ll need to log in with your account and password, and SafeSearch will remain active until you turn it off. Furthermore, you can tell at a glance if it’s active: large colored balls will appear in the top right of the screen as long as SafeSearch Lock is enabled.

Navigate to Bing.com SafeSearch. At the top, you’ll see the SafeSearch filter. By default, it’s in the Moderate position. Click on the topmost radio button to enable strict filtering.

Unlike Google, setting strict filtering on Bing will block everything. For example, searching for the word “sex,” Bing gives no results at all. This indicates that Bing is not filtering content of the results, but prohibiting the search completely. Depending on your own personal feelings, this may either be a good thing or a bad thing. Either way, there is a very clear difference between Bing searches and Google searches.
  • Note: Bing does not offer a way to lock strict filtering.

Smart Internet Protection 2011 – a fake security tool that shows inaccurate scan results to make you pay for its license

How to report a malicious website to the smartscreen filter in internet explorer 9

Smart Internet Protection 2011 is a rogue anti-spyware program that should never be trusted for your Windows protection. This rogue program deliberately displays fake alerts and uses scare tactics to make you think your computer is infected with malware. In other words, it is a scam you should never trust.

That’s why Smart Internet Protection 2011 is classified as a rogue anti-spyware program. The rogue program is promoted through the use of fake scanners and other malware, stating that your computer has a security risk or that your private information can be stolen. If you found this malicious app on your machine seemingly out of nowhere, you should use this guide to delete all malicious files.

    NameSmart Internet Protection 2011
    TypeRogue anti-spyware, malware, scareware
DistributionFake notifications about virus infections on malicious websites
SimilarPC Antivirus Pro, Spyware Protect 2009, Vista Guardian
DangersPersonal information disclosure to cybercriminals, financial losses, identity theft, other malware infections
RemovalPerform a full system scan with SpyHunter 5 Combo Cleaner anti-malware software
System fixTo revert malware damage to system files and avoid Windows reinstallation, we recommend using Reimage Intego

Just as many other fake anti-spyware programs, this one uses fake online scanning animations in order to make people believe that they have a virus on their computers. Users get scared and download the promoted application. As soon as they do that, Smart Internet Protection 2011 begins its malicious deeds on a Windows PC.

As evident, the programs tries to imitate a security app that allegedly protects you from all threats online. Unfortunately, not only does not have a working virus database or malware recognition mechanists, but it acts as malware itself.

After the fake scan these rogue scanners display a screen stating that your computer is infected with numerous viruses and that you should download and install the promoted app in order to remove the infections from your computer. If you have this rogue program on your computer please use the removal instructions below to remove it manually for free or with an automatic removal tool upon detection.

Smart Internet Protection 2011 is configured to start automatically when you login to Windows. When running, will scan your computer and display numerous infections that cannot be removed unless you first purchase the program. These infections are all fake and are only being shown to scare you into into purchasing the bogus software.

Besides this, the malware would perform the following on your computer:

    • display fake security alerts on your computer containing fake information to further convince you that your computer has some serious security and privacy issues;
    • hijack Google Chrome, Internet Explorer, or another used browser to protect itself from being removed using legitimate anti-spyware programs;
    • prevent you from using the Task Manager, Registry Editor or other vital Windows functions;
    • change the proxy settings of your web browser to redirect you to malicious websites;
    • block legitimate security programs, misleadingly claiming that they are viruses.

As you can see, this program is nothing more but a scam. It uses misleading methods to trick users into purchasing useless software. Do not purchase it; otherwise, you will lose your money and give your credit card details to scammers. In order to remove Smart Internet Protection 2011, scan your machine with security software (we recommend SpyHunter 5 Combo Cleaner ) and then use Reimage Intego to fix the damage done to Windows system files.

Learn to recognize deception online to prevent malware infections

While the leading malware distribution technique remains malicious spam emails, fake update prompts and fake online notifications still pose a great risk to users. First of all, you might end up on a malicious website at any time, especially if you are keen on browsing high-risk sites – good examples are torrent sites that distribute pirated programs and cracks.

Potentially unwanted programs such as adware might also engage in browser redirects, so you should check your system for those. In any case, once you land on a website that claims that something is missing (Flash Player) or that your computer is infected with malware, never download anything that is offered, as these claims are fake.

Always visit official websites in order to download the latest updates for all your software. Likewise, use reputable security software to detect and remove malware, as well as protect from its entry with the real-time protection feature.

Smart Internet Protection 2011 removal process explained

    • Now you will see Local Area Network (LAN) settings window. Uncheck the checkbox labeled Use a proxy server for your LAN under the Proxy Server section and press OK.
    • Download an automatic removal tool from this page and run a full system scan.

Do not forget that you need to revert changes made to your web browsers as well – clean web data and cookies. To do this step quickly and also fix all the Windows system damage that could have been sustained due to the infection, use Reimage Intego .

Microsoft’s SmartScreen Filter, the system that has been offering protection to users from internet based attacks since last 8 years has now evolved into a more powerful tool with capabilities to block web-based attacks that silently abuse software vulnerabilities to infect PCs.

Until now, SmartScreen has been offering phishing attacks and socially engineered malware to also include warnings for deceptive advertisements and support scam sites. However, with attackers finding newer ways to intrude into the PC’s, Microsoft announced that the latest Windows 10 updates, includes a beefed up SmartScreen that provides protection from drive-by attacks in Microsoft Edge and Internet Explorer 11.

Why Drive-by attacks are so lethal

Drive-by-download attacks are more lethal in destruction and a modern mode of attack that most antivirus programs are not able to detect. These malicious web attacks are commonly routed through trusted websites, targeting security vulnerabilities in commonly used software. They usually don’t require any user interaction, foxing user to believe that he or she hasn’t clicked on anything malicious to download and the PC is safe. The infection, however has already happened in an invisible mode not discovered by users.

Talking about the Drive-by attack, Microsoft mentioned on the Windows blog,

“Drive-by attacks make use of services known as exploit kits (EKs) to scale effectively. These are tools that first check your PC for software vulnerabilities (tracked publicly as CVEs) and then try to exploit them. The vulnerabilities can be either newly discovered ones – also known as 0-days – or ones that have already been fixed in popular software”.

To counter these deadly Drive-by attacks, Microsoft analyzed a broad set of data from sources like Microsoft Edge, Internet Explorer, Bing, Windows Defender and the Enhanced Mitigation Experience Toolkit (EMET) to come up with an effective tracking solution that discovers these kind of attacks as they emerge.

SmartScreen in IE11 will stop Drive-By-Downloads

In the latest Windows 10 updates, SmartScreen contains an inbuilt small cache file created by the SmartScreen service. This cache file is periodically updated by the browser to keep users protected.

If a website is detected as malicious, the user sees a red warning while the content is automatically blocked in IE or Microsoft Edge. Another improvement in the latest SmartScreen is that it blocks only those portions of the page where it detects malicious activity. The rest of the page is available for the user to interact.

So check if you have enabled SmartScreen on your Windows 10 PC’s on not? Just remember that it won’t work on older IE version in case you have been using them.

Malaysia is one of those countries that implements Internet censorship by forcing all Malaysian Internet Service Providers to block access to certain websites containing pornographic, politics, file sharing and malicious content. Thousands of websites have been blocked since this practice started and surely the numbers will only continue to grow. Accessing any of the blocked websites will report that “This page can’t be displayed”.

There are a couple of ways for an ISP to block access to websites and Malaysian ISPs often block DNS resolution queries by null routing to localhost. If you ping or run a dig or nslookup on the blocked website, you will see that the domain name resolves to 127.0.0.1 and the website won’t load because that address points back to your own computer.

How to report a malicious website to the smartscreen filter in internet explorer 9

It doesn’t matter which country you are from or which ISP you are using, we’re confident that at least one of the seven methods we’ve shared below will help you access blocked websites.

    1. Change Your DNS

Normally your router is configured to use the DNS from your ISP to translate hostnames to IP addresses. If the ISP is using DNS based filtering it will effectively block all intended websites. Bypassing it is as easy as changing to a different public DNS offered by Google, OpenDNS, Cloudflare and etc.

    DNS Jumper

A free tool called DNS Jumper is able to change your DNS to something else in a few clicks. All you need to do is download the program, run it, choose a DNS server from the list and click the Apply DNS button. You might want to click on the Flush DNS button and also restart your web browser to clear any DNS caching.

How to report a malicious website to the smartscreen filter in internet explorer 9

Another advantage in using DNS Jumper is it automatically backs up the original DNS server address so you can easily roll back the DNS changes by selecting “Restore” from the DNS server list.

    NirSoft QuickSetDNS

If you want to use something else instead of DNS Jumper, there is another portable tool called QuickSetDNS by NirSoft where you can easily configure your network adapter to use another DNS service.

How to report a malicious website to the smartscreen filter in internet explorer 9

QuickSetDNS only has three custom DNS services in its list by default, but they are well known, reliable and will unblock restricted websites if your ISP uses DNS filtering. All you have to do is right click on the Cloudflare, Google or Quad9 DNS entry and select Set Active DNS.

    2. Browse Via Web Proxy

A web proxy is a convenient method to access blocked websites without installing software or changing system settings. A web proxy effectively behaves as if someone else on the internet fetches the requested webpage and you view what they have received in your browser. As long as the web proxy websites themselves are not blocked by your ISP, this method will work.

All you need to do is launch your web browser and visit a web proxy website, then enter the blocked URL that you would like to access. The web proxy sometimes has options to enable or disable cookies, scripts and encrypt the URL, make sure they are turned off if the page does not load correctly.

How to report a malicious website to the smartscreen filter in internet explorer 9

One of the better services is HidemyAss! Web Proxy which is reliable, easy to use and includes proxy locations for the USA, Germany, the Netherlands, the UK, and the Czech Republic. There were a few ad popups on the starting page but we didn’t get anything while browsing the proxied websites. An ad blocker is recommended while using any web proxy services as some might show a lot of ads or intrusive ads.

There are many web proxy services around, a few others we tried were ProxySite, a number of different proxies at Free Proxy List that can also help get around Youtube blocking, and UnblockVideos that can help you get to video streaming/hosting sites.

    3. Install a VPN

A VPN is similar to a proxy except it routes all system traffic through the VPN server. Nearly all fully featured VPNs are commercial services but you can find a few that offer free usage with some limitations such as reduced speed, bandwidth usage or restricted locations.

    Hotspot Shield

Hotspot Shield is a free and ad-supported VPN software that has been around for many years. There are some restrictions in place but if you only want to browse websites, then it may be all you need. In addition to the Windows desktop application, there are Hotspot Shield apps for iOS, Android, and the Windows Store.

How to report a malicious website to the smartscreen filter in internet explorer 9

Install, press the Start button and Hotspot Shield will connect to a US based VPN server. Other locations are disabled and premium only options. You get 500MB of free bandwidth per day which will reset after 24 hours. There will be a nag after various consumed amounts such as 50% used. Hotspot Shield has a useful feature called a kill switch which disconnects the internet if the VPN stops working.

    OkayFreedom VPN

If you want your VPN to connect to something other than US based servers, OkayFreedom is another service that offers some free bandwidth. There is some confusion over how much traffic allowance you actually get with the free version. The website says you get 2GB per month but after installation, the software told us we had 9.8GB per month for nearly 6 months.

How to report a malicious website to the smartscreen filter in internet explorer 9

OkayFreedom offers a connection to 23 countries, all of which are available in the free version. There is mention of OkayFreedom being ad supported but we didn’t notice anything during testing. That’s not to say ads won’t show up at some point though. There are often promotions on giveaway sites for OkayFreedom to increase the bandwidth limits, which is something to keep an eye out for.

    4. Tor Browser

Tor Browser is an open source project based around Mozilla Firefox and is considered one of the most secure ways to browse the internet without being tracked by online entities. It works by routing your Internet traffic through a number of random servers in the Tor network which means ISPs and other organizations don’t know where your traffic is going. Effectively, you should be able to browse any website unrestricted.

How to report a malicious website to the smartscreen filter in internet explorer 9

If you’re unlucky enough that your country or ISP blocks Tor, there is an option built in to help get around the problem. It does this by using unlisted relays (servers) that help obfuscate Tor traffic to make it harder to detect. Do not torrent over the Tor network as that is not what it’s designed for. It is also not recommended to install other Firefox browser extensions and you should just use Tor Browser as it is.

On page 2 we’ll show several more options to bypass internet filtering, whether it’s from Streamyx or any other ISP.

The Blocked List allows you to block specific websites based on URL, domain, or IP address

Category Filtering allows you to block millions of websites across over 100 content categories including pornography, social media, and virus-infected sites.

and finally, you can use the Allowed List to allow specific websites that would otherwise be blocked based on their category, or for the greatest security and control you can block all websites except for those that are on the Allowed List.

When your users try to visit a blocked website they can either be presented with a custom warning message or directed to another site, such as a page with a reminder of your organization’s internet use policy.

With BrowseControl’s App Blocker you can prevent your users from launching specific applications.

Simply select the group you would like to restrict, enter the Original Filename of the application to the Application List, and add it to the blocked applications list.

When the user tries to launch the blocked application they can be presented with a custom warning message that alerts them of the restriction.

A filtering incoming / outgoing data, blocking addresses, local ports, remote ports software

Personal Internet Filter is an application created to help you keep your personal data and privacy safe from Internet hackers while surfing the Internet.

Personal Internet Filter security software designed to monitor the traffic into and out of your system. Within the scanning window, you may see traffic through various ports such as 110 (pop3), 80 (web) and a few others. When such hazard happens, it reports the alert in a ‘Possible Attacks’ window and also allows you to save it to a log file.

Personal Internet Filter is a fast, easy to use program that offers to Stop Pop-up ads, Stop Animated Flash ads, Stop Floating ads, Stop Timer ads, Removes Web Bugs. How does a Personal Internet Filter Work? All internet communication is accomplished by the exchange of individual “packets” of data. Each packet is transmitted by its source machine toward its destination machine.

Packets are the fundamental unit of information flow across the Internet. Even though we refer to “connections” between computers, this “connection” is actually comprised of individual packets travelling between those two “connected” machines.

Essentially, they “agree” that they’re connected and each machine sends back “acknowledgement packets” to let the sending machine know that the data was received. In order to reach its destination whether it’s another computer two feet away or two continents distant every Internet packet must contain a destination address and port number.

And, so that the receiving computer knows who sent the packet, every packet must also contain the IP address and a port number of the originating machine. In other words, any packet travelling the net contains first and foremost its complete source and destination addresses. As we’ve seen earlier on this site, an IP address always identifies a single machine on the Internet and the port is associated with a particular service or conversation happening on the machine.

Do you have Kids and worry what they might come across on the Interwebs?

Like a lot of us, I have kids.. Kids that are starting to use the internet and whilst parental supervision is THE best option, its not always a reality that you will be looking over your kids shoulder 24/7 .

A lot of technical savvy people have known for many years that the names of places on the internet such as use something called Domain Name System (DNS) to basically convert the word place name to a number address much like a Phone Book.

Some crafty malware / virus makers also cottoned onto this, so by getting access to a DNS server and inserting a forged address could basically redirect a browser opening to a totally different/fake site. For years people had been told ‘dont click on links, type them in yourself to be safe’ and with this approach and a poisoned DNS server, you still end up on a fake site which can be used to trick people into giving away private information.

What you can do on your own computer is manipulate DNS lookups by editing the local hosts file which gets checked BEFORE DNS in normal practice but this means you have to be technically savvy, maintain it yourself or run a piece of software to do it.

It’s absolutely FREE and there’s no ongoing fiddling and tech knowledge required.

OpenDNS lets you change your Internet settings so that instead of using your ISP provided DNS servers (which happens automatically when you connect to the internet) and they maintain different lists of sites and categorize them into different levels!

You can set different filtering levels (customizable). For my Daughter’s ipad, I have it set to maximum and whilst she’s not even looking for anything questionable at her age it’s a nice thing to have anyway.

How to report a malicious website to the smartscreen filter in internet explorer 9

Note that you can add your own blocked domains, so when you find something that isn’t blocked you can add it yourself.

You can see overall statistics:How to report a malicious website to the smartscreen filter in internet explorer 9

How to report a malicious website to the smartscreen filter in internet explorer 9

You can also see a list of blocked domains (there’s some obvious adult content I was using here to test it was working):How to report a malicious website to the smartscreen filter in internet explorer 9

How do you set this up?

First of all, go to the website and signup an account, this costs nothing.

Next, once you have this setup you need to just use the OpenDNS DNS servers for your DNS lookups. Whooo wait.. that sounds technical.

Look I’m not going to explain how to do this for every platform but I can help you by telling you to use either google or YouTube to search for the correct question. What you want to type is ‘how to change DNS settings on X’ with X being your Operating System, such as Windows 7, Windows 8.1, Ipad etc).

On a windows machine by setting your Internet connected interface to the OpenDNS servers can look like this:

This forces ANY dns lookups to go through OpenDNS and you will get a result based on the filtering settings you have set.

As an example, I set my DNS to 208.67.222.222 and 208.67.220.220 and tried to open with Internet Explorer.

Behind the scenes what happens is that my request to open the web page needs to be converted into an address. My computer asks OpenDNS servers what is the address of As this point as I have High filtering set which covers adult sites, OpenDNS responds by giving my computer back the block domain website. Nice!

How to report a malicious website to the smartscreen filter in internet explorer 9

    Final

Again ADULT Supervision is by far the best way to protect your children from things you do not want them to experience on the internet.

Using OpenDNS servers is by no means fool proof, not every site is covered by this and it is not hard especially for anyone who might be keen to see anything they would like so don’t be lulled into thinking this is an ideal solution.

So why do this? It’s free, it does work and if anything its great so see the statistics generated very simply so at the very least you can review what your child HAS been looking at as every DNS lookup is listed.

I say why not? I have this configured on my Daughter’s Ipad and it works a treat as an addition to parental supervision.

Proxy Server? And whats to stop a user from bringing in a USB with an executable for chrome, safari, FF, etc. and going that way?

You can block this at a router level so no one can get out. You can do this via GPO. You can do it via your firewall/content filtering software. you can do this via proxy server.

What have you tried so far or looked at.

While GPO is an option, that only blocks it via browsers that inherit the GPO settings, this does not solve the problem of IM clients, skype, remote support tools/teamviewer, email clients, portable browsers on a USB stick, ping, nslookup, viruses, malware, etc.

Your router might do “whitelist only” which is what you’re after. Another option might be to remove the DNS server IPs (don’t do this if the machines are part of an AD domain) and then add just the one site you need to the Windows HOSTS file, but this could break in the future if/when the site changes IPs. Another option is a content filter like DNS Redirector (that’s how we accomplish whitelist only)

Remember that while today you may think you only need that one site, you probably really need a few others; like Microsoft’s NCSI, virus scan/malware DAT updates, Windows Updates, Adobe updates, NTP server, etc.

Strobe Technologies Ltd is an IT service provider.

Tjmarkus has some very good points, the best option would be to too at a content filtering system and block most if not all categories and add the required sites to your whitefish.

To get around USB browsers etc you need to make sure you either configure the filter in transparent mode or configure your firewall to only access external access via your filter.

I think the easiest way to go is by content filtering like OpenDNS.

Spur Systems, LLC is an IT service provider.

Yes – some kind of URL filtering is probably better.

Proxy Server? And whats to stop a user from bringing in a USB with an executable for chrome, safari, FF, etc. and going that way?

Thank you for thinking Outside Of The Box.

Thank You, I will be looking into that.

Thank you for sharing many options. I will explore all.

If you go internet options in Internet Explorer. Then go to connections>Lan Settings> Select use a proxy server for your LAN. Then Put 127.0.0.1 for the proxy address. Select the advanced button and add the sites that you want to bypass the proxy. * can be used as a wildcard. Only sites added to the exceptions list will work.

Control network traffic made by other PC users, installed programs or certain websites using this application that runs in the systray

Internet Security Filter is an application made to continuously run on the computer, monitor Internet traffic and allow or block certain connections based on a set of filters that you can control in detail. This is a security measure against malware attacks. It shouldn’t be confused with an anti-malware software solution, though, which acts in a different manner.

The tool has been designed to allow or deny Internet access to other PC users than the administrator, as well as to any software applications and websites. For instance, it can block advertisements, popups, banners and other marketing content when surfing the Internet, ensuring more comfort.

Control Internet connections made by other PC users, programs or websites

Before proceeding any further, you should know that Internet Security Filter hasn’t been updated for such a long time that it doesn’t work on the latest Windows version. It gets installed quickly and creates an icon in the system tray when it starts, keeping an eye on your Internet traffic. Also, it starts automatically every time you turn on your computer but this option can be changed from the settings menu.

Set the security level, create whitelists and blacklists

However, you can access Internet Security Filter’s control panel to configure settings. For example, you can select the security level from allowing all connections to allowing everything except those in the blacklist or blocking everything aside from those in the whitelist. In a different section of the configuration window, you can view details about the activity of each application that has established an Internet connection, including the total amount of sent and received data, as well as the time of the first and last connection. Any selected program can be added to the blacklist or whitelist.

Similarly, you can check out visited websites in your web browsers, along with the number of visits, as well as add any page to the whitelist or blacklist. These two lists can be managed anytime, in order to add new entries or remove existing ones if you change your mind.

    Doesn’t work on newer Windows

Internet Security Filter had little to no impact on the computer’s performance in our tests. Too bad that it’s not compatible with newer Windows. Otherwise, it comes packed with easy-to-use and powerful features for keeping your computer safe by filtering Internet connections made by other PC users, programs or websites.

Is your SmartScreen Filter turned off? Or do you get the message SmartScreen Filter cannot check this website? If that is so, this post will show you how to enable or disable SmartScreen Filter on Windows 11/10/8/7 using the UI, Group Policy or Registry Editor.

How to report a malicious website to the smartscreen filter in internet explorer 9

For those who don’t know what SmartScreen is, it is a feature that helps detect phishing websites, and can also help protect you from installing malicious software or malware. So whenever you encounter a suspicious site, a warning will be displayed on the browser window to notify the user about the site’s nature and whether the user trusts the site owner/publisher to continue further on the URL provided.

    Enable or Disable SmartScreen Filter

Now let us see how to enable or disable the SmartScreen Filter on Windows 11/10 using the UI, Group Policy or Registry Editor.

Turn on or Turn off SmartScreen Filter using UI

    Via Windows Security

You can open Windows Security > App & browser control. To turn it off for Apps, under Reputation-based protection, you will see the following 3 options:

    • Check apps and files
    • SmartScreen for Microsoft Edge
    • SmartScreen for Microsoft Store apps.

You can toggle the switch to the On or Off positions as required.

Do note that when you do this, you leave your computer vulnerable.

    Via Microsoft Edge

Open Microsoft Edge browser > Settings > Privacy & Services.

Here toggle the Microsoft Defender SmartScreen switch to the Off or On position as required.

    Via Internet Properties

You can also open Internet Options/Properties. Go to the Advanced tab and scroll down for Security Category. There if you want to enable/disable the feature, you can accordingly check the box captioned “Enable SmartScreen Filter” then press OK.

Now after you enable the feature, every time you encounter a suspicious URL it will display a message.

If you don’t want to use this feature, you can just uncheck the checkbox to disable the same, but it’s highly recommended since phishing attacks are increasing day by day, increasing the potential threat to confidential information of email accounts.

TIP: You can also quickly bypass SmartScreen filter and download files, without turning off SmartScreen Filter.

    SmartScreen Filter is turned off

If your SmartScreen is turned off or you receive the message that it is disabled by an administrator, then follow these steps.

Enable or Turn on SmartScreen Filter using Group Policy

Run gpedit.msc to open the Group Policy Editor and navigate to the following setting:

Computer Configuration > Administrative Templates > Windows Components > File Explorer

In the right pane, double-click on Configure Windows SmartScreen to change its settings. In recent Windows 10 versions, it is called Configure Windows Defender SmartScreen.

This policy setting allows you to manage the behavior of Windows SmartScreen. Windows SmartScreen helps keep PCs safer by warning users before running unrecognized programs downloaded from the Internet. Some information is sent to Microsoft about files and programs run on PCs with this feature enabled. If you enable this policy setting, Windows SmartScreen behavior may be controlled by setting one of the following options: Require approval from an administrator before running downloaded unknown software, Give user a warning before running downloaded unknown software or Turn off SmartScreen. If you disable or do not configure this policy setting, Windows SmartScreen behavior is managed by administrators on the PC by using Windows SmartScreen Settings in Action Center.

Enable SmartScreen Filter using Registry Editor

Run regedit to open the Registry Editor and navigate to the following key:

In the right pane, you may find DWORD value EnableSmartScreen. Delete this DWORD.

The values for this key are as follows:

    • 0 : To turn off SmartScreen
    • 1 : Give the user a warning before running downloaded unknown software
    • 2 : Require approval from an administrator before running downloaded unknown software.

Let them know that while you trust them, you will still verify that they are following the rules and that their online use can and will be monitored. Explain that internet access is a privilege that shouldn’t be abused and that it can and will be taken away if they don’t meet your expectations.

    Physically Lock up Your Router

One of the easiest ways for your child to circumvent your security settings is to reset your router to its factory default settings. This usually involves simply pressing and holding a reset button located on the back of the router. Once the router is reset, most routers will default to wide-open wireless with no encryption, revert to an easily googled factory-set password, and have most of their security features disabled. The kids have an easy alibi because they can plead ignorance and blame it on a power spike. Lock the router in a closet or somewhere way out of reach to prevent them from pressing the reset button.

Set Router-Enforced Time Limits for Internet Access

Most routers have a setting that gives you the ability to cut off access to the internet at a certain time of day. You lock your doors at night. Do the same for your internet connection. Go into your wireless router’s setup and turn off your internet connection from midnight to 5 in the morning. It’s like a child lock for the internet. Time limits also prevent hackers from being able to attack your network during the set time-frame. You have effectively isolated yourself from the rest of the internet during the hours when most hackers are just starting on their second can of Red Bull.

Disable Wireless Remote Administration of Your Router

If you turn off the Remote Administration via Wireless feature on your router, then someone trying to hack into its settings (such as your child or a hacker) would have to be on a computer that is physically connected (via an Ethernet cable) to the router. Disabling this feature doesn’t prevent you from changing your router’s settings; it just makes it a little more inconvenient for you, your child, and hackers.

Scan for Nearby Unsecured Wireless Access Points

All of your firewalls and filters go out the window if little Johnny attaches to your neighbor’s unsecured wireless access point and starts leeching off of their internet connection. This overrides your internet parental controls because your child is using a different network entirely.

Use the Wi-Fi search feature of your Wi-Fi enabled cell phone or laptop to see if there are any open Wi-Fi hotspots near your house that your child could connect to. It’s best if you do the search from inside their bedroom or wherever they normally get online from. You may be able to determine where the hot spot is originating from by looking at the signal strength meter as you walk around their room. Talk to your neighbor, explain your objective, and ask them to password-protect their wireless access point. It not only helps you enforce your parental controls, but it also helps keep people from getting a free ride courtesy of their unsecured Wi-Fi hotspot.

Enable the Parental Control Features on Your Child’s Game Systems and Mobile Devices

Parents often overlook the fact that kids can get to the internet via game consoles, iPods, and cell phones. It’s important to set internet parental controls on all personal devices. These gadgets have web browsers just like your home PC does. The filters you install on your computer will do nothing to stop your kids from visiting forbidden sites using their mobile device or game system. Thankfully, most devices kids would use, such as the iPad and PlayStation 4, have parental controls that you can set to restrict the content that your kids can access. Read up on these features and implement them. Periodically check the device to see if the password you set is still in effect. If not, your child may have reset it and disabled the controls.

Put Their PC in an Open Area of the House

It’s hard for your children to visit inappropriate websites if they have to use the PC in the kitchen. If the PC is in a well-frequented area where you can see it, your kids are less likely to attempt to go to unauthorized sites. Kids may love having a PC in their room, but consider moving it somewhere less private so you can keep an eye on what is going on.

Enable Activity Logging on Your Router and PCs

Your child will most likely figure out how to cover their tracks by deleting browser histories or by enabling private browsing mode where no history is kept. The best thing you can do is purchase monitoring software that your child will not easily defeat or detect. Periodically review the log files to make sure your kids are staying out of trouble. You can also configure parental controls in different browsers for another layer of protection.

Another option is to enable activity logging on your wireless router. Logging into the router will allow you to capture connection information even when your child uses their mobile devices or game consoles (unless they are using another wireless access point other than yours).
