• To speed up the migration process, it is recommended you have Evernote for Windows installed. Sign in to Evernote for Windows with your Evernote account and make sure your latest notes are synced before importing.

Evernote has long been the go-to application for taking notes, tracking documents, organizing projects, and generally being the place to put anything you might want to find later.

However, in the last few years, Evernote’s reputation has suffered due to an aging interface, increased fees, a series of layoffs, and a new CEO. While there are no indications that the application is going away any time soon, and it still boasts (according to most accounts) a couple hundred million users, it doesn’t hurt to have a plan B in place in case you decide it’s time to bail.

Luckily, there are a number of applications such as Microsoft OneNote, Zoho Notebook, Simplenote, and Google Keep that are looking to compete as the place for you to keep your thoughts, ideas, and other stuff. In this article, we are going to tell you how (or if) you can migrate your Evernote data to one of these applications.

However, whether or not you plan to switch, it’s a good idea to know how to export your data, if only to have an independent backup of that information, just in case.

How to export your Evernote data

Evernote lets you divide your notes into separate notebooks. When you export your data, each notebook must be exported into a separate file in Evernote’s .enex format (you can also export to an HTML file if you want).

You can only export data using the Evernote local application for PCs or Macs; you can’t do it from the online version. To try it out, I used a Mac on which I’d installed version 7.9 of Evernote. Here is how you proceed; the process for a PC is very similar.

• Click on Notebooks in Evernote’s left-hand menu or select View > Notebook from the top menu. This will give you a listing of all your Evernote notebooks in the main window.
• Select which notebook(s) you want to export. (If you want to export your entire Evernote file, then select them all.)
• Right click on the selected notebook(s) and choose “Export Notes from ‘NotebookName.’” You can also go to the top menu and select File > Export Notes.
• In the pop-up window, type in the name you want to give your export file and select the folder in which you want to save it. You can also decide whether you want to export the associated tags (assuming you used any). Click on Save.

Now you’ve got your data, where do you want to put it? I’ve look at four of the best-known Evernote alternatives — Microsoft OneNote, Zoho Notebook, Simplenote, and Google Keep — to find out the easiest way to move your data to each (assuming you can). Two of them, OneNote and Notebook, offer importers to make things as simple as possible for you. Simplenote offers a fairly simple way to import your .enex files once you’ve exported them from Evernote. And Keep. well. not gonna happen.

Microsoft OneNote

Microsoft OneNote is perhaps the application most compared to Evernote, and Microsoft has taken advantage of that by offering very explicit instructions, and by providing its users with an importer to make things as easy as possible.

There is one exception: If you are using the Evernote client on a Mac, and you downloaded your version of Evernote from the Mac App Store rather than from Evernote’s site, you won’t be able to use the importer to automatically import your data directly. Instead, you will have to use the link in the importer (see below) that helps you import your Evernote .enex files.

However, assuming you have the correct version:

• Go to the page “Making the move from Evernote to OneNote” and download the importer. (According to the page, it will work for PCs with Windows 7 or later, or Macs with OS X El Capitan 10.11 or later.)
• Make sure that your desktop copy of Evernote is closed. Otherwise, the importer will simply tell you that you’ve successfully installed it, but won’t go any further.
• The importer then goes to work, creating .enex files for each of your notebooks (but not downloading them to your OneNote account).
• The importer will then ask you to choose which notebooks you want to select. All of the notebooks are automatically selected, but you can choose specific ones as well. If there was a problem with the import, there is a link that will help you import your own .enex file.
• If you haven’t signed in to OneNote, you’ll be asked to do so. Otherwise, click on Import.
• Once it’s finished, you’ll be notified of any notes that failed to import. In the case of OneNote, it will not import reminders or encrypted content.

The following guide walks you through the process of migrating all of your Evernote notebooks to Microsoft’s OneNote service.

Evernote’s recent announcement that it would limit basic users to syncing two devices, and increase pricing of the service for all paying customers, will certainly lead to users leaving the service behind.

One Evernote alternative is Microsoft’s OneNote service. OneNote supports many features of Evernote, and tops the service in others. It features unlimited monthly uploads for instance, is free, and enables you to write anywhere on a page.

Migrate from Evernote to OneNote

As far as migration from Evernote to OneNote is concerned, the easiest option is to use Microsoft’s Evernote to OneNote importer. The program is only available for Windows 7 and later only however.

Good news is that it supports two ways of migrating your data from Evernote to OneNote. The easier one of the two picks up the data from the local Evernote program for Windows, the other manually exported Evernote data files with the .enex extension.

The easy method

1. Make sure Evernote for Windows is installed, and that you signed in recently so that all data including recent additions is available on the local computer.
2. Install Microsoft’s Evernote to OneNote Importer program on the same device.
3. Accept the license agreement when you start the importer, and click on the get started button.
4. The importer scans the device for Evernote notebooks, and displays all it finds in its interface.
5. Select one, some or all Evernote notebooks for the migration and click on the next button.
6. You need to sign in to a Microsoft Account, or a work or school account now. Select the appropriate option from the selection menu. If you don’t have a Microsoft account, there is also an option to sign up for one.
7. If you are using Windows 10, your Microsoft account may be picked up automatically. If not, you need to enter the username and password manually to complete the step.
8. OneNote creates new notebooks for every Evernote notebook automatically during the migration. You may check the “use Evernote tags to organize content in OneNote” option to use the tagging system on OneNote as well.
9. Click on the import button to complete the process.

The import may take a while depending on the content that is stored on Evernote.

The manual way

You may use Microsoft’s OneNote Importer to import Evernote .enex files instead. You may use the Evernote for Windows or Mac application to save notebooks as .enex files.

Instructions on how to do so are provided on the Evernote help website.

The process is nearly identical from that point on. The only change is that you need to select database files manually, and that you can import only one notebook at a time using the method.

Considering that the importer will pick up all notebooks by default if the Evernote application is installed on the same computer, it is without doubt easier to use it instead of the manual method.

If you are using a Mac or Linux, you may want to consider using a virtual machine installation of Windows for the importing if you want to switch to OneNote.

Now You: Which note taking service are you using, if any?

Microsoft has released a tool which makes it easy to migrate notes from Evernote to OneNote. Here’s how to use the OneNote Importer tool and import your Evernote notes to OneNote.

Two best note-taking services with best of everything. Both Evernote and OneNote are most widely used note-taking apps and they both have set of features and capabilities to keep them on top from other similar apps. Import Notes from Evernote to OneNote

Previously, this was a hectic task for anybody to move notes from one Evernote account to another. But, now, this has been very easy as Microsoft has launched an official tool that will let you import notes from Evernote to OneNote. This is called Importer or Evernote to OneNote Importer, which is available for free. But, you need to have Windows PC since this is not available for Mac.

Before getting started with this importer, you should know that you must have Windows 7 or later version. Apart from that, you need official Evernote app installed on your computer. If you have them, just go ahead and download the importer from the here.

After opening it on your PC, you will get a welcome screen, at first. Go to Select Evernote content tab and select your notebooks. You can either import all of them or import only one or two – as you wish.

Go to the next screen and sign in to your OneNote account. Following that, you will be switched to Import tab. Here, you just have to hit the Import button. There is yet another option that is completely optional. You can also import Evernote tags to OneNote by checking the box that says Use Evernote tags to organize content on OneNote.

Following that, it will take a couple of moments to complete the migration. After migrating, you can find all the Evernote content on your OneNote account.

Yesterday, popular cross-platform note-taking app Evernote announced some changes to its pricing plans which may have been bad news for its loyal users. While the app has always had a freemium business model, the company announced both increased prices for its Plus and Premium tiers for new subscribers and that free accounts would only be able to sync the app on two devices simultaneously going forward.

This latest restriction seems pretty inconvenient for those who currently rely on the app on their PCs, tablets and phones, to say the least. While Evernote is still a high-quality service, now seems to be a great time for Evernote users to reevaluate their technology choices.

Indeed, Microsoft’s OneNote is a solid competitor to Evernote, and it’s also ubiquitous and completely free. Actually, if you own an Android phone, there is a good chance that OneNote is be already preinstalled on your handset as Microsoft has partnered with 74 OEMs to preload the app on their Android devices. Furthermore, we should add that OneNote is still one of the best tablet apps you can use on Windows 10 devices as it supports digital inking, and if you own a Surface device you can even launch the app by clicking on the tip of a paired Surface Pen.

A few months ago, Microsoft did a pretty forward-thinking move as it launched a tool to import your notes from Evernote to OneNote for users on PCs on Windows 7 or later. If you’re an Evernote user who is currently looking for greener pastures, here is how it works:

• To speed up the migration process, it is recommended you have Evernote for Windows installed. Sign in to Evernote for Windows with your Evernote account and make sure your latest notes are synced before importing.
• Download the OneNote Import tool over here.
• Once the app is launched, it will connect to your Evernote app and allow you to select the Notebooks you want to import into OneNote.
• The app will then ask you to log in to your own Microsoft account, so choose the one you would like to use with OneNote.
• The importer tool will warn you that it will create a new OneNote notebook for each of your own Evernote notebooks (you can also choose to use your Evernote tags to organize content into OneNote). Click “Import” and then wait for the magic to happen.

Once your Evernote notes are imported into OneNote, they will sync across all your devices — Mac, iOS and Android included. Ridiculous suggestion. How about Microsoft providing a converter? I’ll not move from Evernote until something like this is available and – based on my casual search for such a solution I am not alone.

That like saying I’d like to switch from a MAC to WINDOWS and you tell me to ask MAC!

I hope you realize how ridiculous your reply is to your potential customers.

Like others in this thread, I will be re-thinking switching from Evernote to OneNote.

Want to switch to OneNote as your default notetaking app without losing your Evernote notes? OneNote doesn’t include a way to import notes from Evernote, but with the new free Ever2One Converter, you can move your notes to OneNote in seconds.

Many of us have tried many notetaking tools over the years, but once you’ve decided to stick to one you’ll want to move all of your notes into your main app. We tried to find ways to import your notes from Evernote into OneNote, but only came up with some workarounds and no good solutions. This week however, the developers of MobileNoter, an iOS OneNote app, released a new tool that makes it quick and simple import your Evernote notes into OneNote. Let’s see how you can use this tool to consolidate all your notes in OneNote.

Moving Your Evernote Notes Into OneNote

First, download the Ever2One Converter from the link below; you’ll need to enter your email address, and then will receive a download code. Download the app once you get the link, and setup as normal.

Once it’s installed, you’ll be ready to import your notes. Enter your Evernote user name and password first to get started.

Now select the notebooks you wish to import, and choose the OneNote notebook to save them to. This way, you can import all of your notes at once, or just your most important ones if you wish.

Select the attributes you want to import with your notes; we recommend importing all the attributes so you’ll keep all your info in the transfer.

The Ever2One Converter will now begin importing and converting your Evernote notes. This may take a few minutes, depending on the number of notes you selected to import. If your notebooks included encrypted notes, you may be prompted to enter your encryption password during the import process.

Once it’s finished, open OneNote and check out the new Evernote Notes notebook. This will contain a section for each of the Evernote Notebooks you imported, and then will show each note in those notebooks as page in Evernote. The notes imported very nicely in our test, including the same images and layout as they did in Evernote. PDF documents and other files attached to notes were also imported, so you won’t lose anything.

Update: Actually, tags are imported too … they’ll be located on the top left of your note’s title. Just hover over the star beside a note’s title to see it’s tags; if there’s no star, then the note didn’t have tags in Evernote. Thanks to Anton from MobileNoter for the heads-up!

Moving from OneNote to Evernote Instead

If instead you want to move your notes from OneNote into Evernote, it’s easy to do this too. Just follow the steps on our guide to Import OneNote Notebooks into Evernote, and note that with the latest Evernote 4 for Windows you can now import both OneNote 2007 and OneNote 2010 notes into Evernote. Now the circle’s complete; you can move your notes from Evernote to OneNote and back with only a couple clicks, so there’s no reason not to use the note taking app you prefer.

Speaking of such, which notetaking app do you prefer? Both Evernote and OneNote have their advantages, and we’d be interested to see which one you find best for your needs.

OneNote is one of the best note-taking apps that is not only free to use but also enables you to sync your notes among all your devices such as mobiles, computers, tablets, etc. More importantly, OneNote doesn’t have any bandwidth limitations on its free version, which is a big thing if you are taking notes extensively on all your devices. While both OneNote and Evernote are note-taking apps at their core, they are very different from one another.

Thus, migrating or moving all the content from Evernote to OneNote can be a big deal for many users. If you’ve heard some good things about OneNote and want to give it a try or just want to move from Evernote to OneNote completely, here is how you can do it the easy way.

Migrate from Evernote to OneNote

Note: before you can import Evernote notes to OneNote, make sure that you have already installed Evernote and the desktop version of OneNote on your system. The tool we are going to use requires you to have both of these installed to work properly.

To migrate from Evernote to OneNote, we are going to use a free and official tool from Microsoft called OneNote Importer. Head over to the official page and download the software.

One you are done downloading the software, navigate to your Downloads folder and execute the downloaded file. On the home screen, read and agree to the terms and click on the “Get Started” button.

As soon as you’ve clicked on the button, OneNote Importer will scan Evernote and display all the notebooks. Select the notebooks you want to import and click on the “Next” button to continue. You can also import from a file by clicking on the “Import a file instead” link appearing at the bottom of the window.

To use OneNote you need to sign in to your Microsoft account. To do that click on the option “Sign in with a Microsoft account.”

If you are using tags in Evernote to organize your content, then select the checkbox “Use Evernote tags to organize content in OneNote” and click on the “Import” button.

The above action will start the importing process. Depending on the number of notes and their size, it can take some time to import, so sit back and wait until it finishes.

Once the importing process has been finished, the app will let you know that. To view your imported notes, simply click on the “View notes in OneNote” button.

This action opens the “Open with” prompt. Select the OneNote desktop app and click on the “Ok” button.

You’ve successfully imported all your notes from Evernote to OneNote.

By default, OneNote uses the same notebook name that is used in Evernote. If you want to change the notebook name, then click on the drop-down icon next to your current notebook name, right-click on the notebook and then select the option “Properties.”

In the notebook properties window, change the notebook name under the “Display Name” field and click on the “Ok” button.
