Learning Wing Chun is very easy, yet hard to master. While it may take many years of discipline and focus to master, beginners can quickly and easily understand its principles and apply them in a practical and effective manner. The art favors close-quarter combat, low kicks, quick and economical movements, tight center-line defense, and simultaneous offensive and defensive expressions. You won’t see any fancy or flashy moves. If you do it is not Wing Chun.
History & Lineage
There are many different oral histories of how Wing Chun came to into existence. Here I share one popular version of the folklore. In the 17th century China was invaded by elements from Manchuria which formed the Qing Dynasty. The Southern Shaolin temple was located in Fujian and was well known for its military prowess against pirates. The Buddhist temple was also known to be a refuge for rebels, so the Qing Dynasty burned it down. Legend says, that the Five Elders of Shaolin survived and went into hiding.
The Five Elders of Shaolin:
- The abbot Jee Sin Sim See (Chi Sin)
- The abbess Ng Mui (Wu Mei), founder of Wing Chun
- Bak Mei, founder of White Eyebrow
- Fung Do-Duk
- Miu Hin
Ng Mui or Wu Mei is known for being a master and influencer of many styles:
- Wu Mei Pai
- Wing Chun
- Dragon style
- White Crane
- Five Pattern Hung Kuen
- Five Ancestors Fist
Legend says she was the daughter of a Ming general and started kung fu training at a very early age. She is known to have spent time in the Wudang Mountains, which if she did could have been influenced by Taoist kung fu. She eventually moved to the Southern Shaolin temple and rose to the status of abbess before it was burned down. According to Ip Man (Yip Man), the abbess fled to a village where she took on a student named Yim Wing Chun who was being forced into marriage by a local warlord. Wing Chun easily defeated him and later married Leung Bok-Chao who she taught him what she learned from the abbess. Leung Bok-Chao taught Leung Lan-kwai and named the art after his wife. In the 1850s Leung Lan-kwai spread the art to the Red Boat Opera Group to six men: Leung Yee Tai, Wong Wah-bo, Yik Kam, Hung Gan Biu, Dai Fa Min Kam, and Law Man Kung. Leung Yee-Tai and Wong Wa-bo taught Leung Jan who later taught his son, Leung Bik and Chan Wah-shun (the “Moneychanger Wah”).
Ip Man was the 16th and last student of Moneychanger Wah, and taught him for three years until he had a stroke. Chan Wah-shun’s second student Ng Chung-sok took Ip Man as his student. In 1909 Leung Bik (Leung Jan’s son) challenged young Ip Man to a friendly sparring match, which Leung Bik won. Later Ip Man became Leung Bik’s student for a couple years until he passed away.
Ip Man had a lot of notable students, one of them is Wong Shun Leung who was a fighter and had hundreds of street fights in Hong Kong. Wong Shun Leung is credited with training Bruce Lee. Ip Man had a closed door group of three students (Leung Sheung, Lok Yiu, & Chu Shong-tin). Leung Sheung was Ip Man’s first and most senior student. Leung Sheung taught Kenneth Chung. Kenneth Chung taught Greg Lee who later went to study Chen Style Tai Chi with Zheng Xue-Xin after Kenneth Chung told Greg that he had taught him everything that he could. Steve Fuller was a student of Greg for over 5 years until he moved up to Oregon, where he continued to study several hours a day for two years until he started taking his own students.
Sifu Ray McDonald first learned Wing Chun from Sifu Randy Lewis whose lineage comes from the Chan Wah-shun line. Ray McDonald is currently studying from Steve Fuller. It is from Greg that Ip Man’s Wing Chun lineage became infused with elements of Chen Style Tai Chi.
Benefits of Wing Chun
Community
Traditional kung fu generally teaches students to be good stewards of the community. Lightning Hand Academy is no exception to this rule as it promotes a fun, challenging, and safe environment for those eager to learn authentic Wing Chun. Please see the school’s code of conduct for more details.
Practical Self Defense
Wing Chun is well known for being a practical style of self defense. If you read the History & Lineage up above, you will learn that Wing Chun was created by a woman for a woman. This means that the art does not combat muscular force with muscular force. Instead it uses correct postural alignment together with relation, tendon & fascia strength, intention, leverage, and direct center-line theory to overcome bigger opponents.
Personal Development
There are plenty of layers of personal development that one can spend a lifetime peeling away at. Wing Chun also has many layers. In fact, many lifetime practitioners of Wing Chun have never seen a goal-post in sight. The practice of Wing Chun teaches you to be an efficient and very effective martial artist, but it also teaches you to be a better person. It becomes less of what to do and more of how to be.
Mental Well Being
There are many scientific studies on how mindfulness meditation, qigong, and moving meditations promote mental health and boost cognitive functioning. The forms in Lightning Hand Academy’s Wing Chun lineage are practiced slow like tai chi and are considered to be moving meditations.
Reduce Stress
Modern-day life can be very stressful. Stress can cause us to close up and be tense, and in some cases, an autonomic nervous system dysregulation can develop. Those with PTSD may know that there are a lot of studies linking this disorder with autonomic nervous system dysregulation. Lightning Hand Academy teaches students to relax. “Soft power” can not be generated when practitioners are tense and stressed. Wing Chun has many energy drills designed to open up our senses. When your senses are opened you can quickly feel physical force and be able to mitigate or redirect them. As a physiological result from being open and calm, it helps reset your sympathetic nervous system (fight or flight response) back into your parasympathetic nervous system (rest and digest response). To help with relaxation moving meditations are routinely practiced within class and are encouraged to be practiced outside of class as well. The school also practices many hip and shoulder stretches designed to open up the joints.
Wondering how to learn Wing Chun at home? Or even how to learn Wing Chun at home for free? You can sign up to the free video series on this website and access a daily free video covering the first Wing Chun hand pattern in detail.
Can you learn Wing Chun online? There are definitely some aspects of Wing Chun which you can learn at home. Of course, Wing Chun is a martial art and you can’t learn to be an effective martial artist without direct hand to hand experience with a time-served instructor.
But you can learn some of the more technical aspects of the system such as forms, turns, stepping and hand movements. Putting them into practice in a combat situation requires some actual hands on training. But if you’re unable to train in a school or with an instructor, you can get started with some simple hand patterns and home based drills.
How To Learn Wing Chun At Home
In the free video series offered on this site you will be able to learn, step by step the first hand pattern – Siu Lim Tao (or Siu Nim Tao). This is the very first hand pattern a student will learn when being taught Wing Chun. In it you will find the main principles of the Wing Chun system:
Siu Lim Tao – Inside pak sau
- Hand positioning
- Use of energy to generate inch power
- Use of relaxation to move more economically
- Basic stance and sinking your energy
- Block and counter moves
- Use of range and distancing
- limits of structure and positions
Learn Wing Chun At Home
The first form is not meant as a fighting system by itself. It’s more of a blueprint of the main elements and principles of the Wing Chun system. It also has a number of health benefits too:
- Wrist stretches to help blood flow, dexterity and suppleness
- Focusing the mind (during 1st section)
- Mind and body connection (quietening the mind)
- Exercising the whole body
- Learning to let go of tension in the body (and mind)
Siu Lim Tao Chain Punches
So at first glance it seems like nothing much. But if you delve into the finer elements of Siu Lim Tao it can be a great teacher. Regular practice can help you learn:
- Use of energy – when to use it and when to relax
- Sinking your energy and centre of gravity
- Calming your mind
- Focusing directly ahead
- Becoming more aware of your energy
Learning Wing Chun At Home For Free
You can start learning Wing Chun from home by accessing the free Wing Chun training videos on this website.
Siu Lim Tao should be practiced very slowly (first section). This is to allow you to digest the positions and get more comfortable with focusing your mind on your body. You’ll also be “teaching” your body to do what you tell it, rather than allowing it to do what it unconsciously wants to do!
At first this can be challenging. Similarly to meditation, Siu Lim Tao is a meditative exercise; particularly the first section. Without a focused mind, which is concentrating on what you are doing, you won’t be doing the form correctly.
As you begin practice, you may find your mind wandering. Focusing your mind is therefore one of the main hidden elements of the siu lim tao practice.
Initially, you’ll be simply learning a new hand pattern. One you have learned the basic moves, keep returning to the form to develop a deeper understanding of it.
For more information on learning first form see wing chun first form step by step and sign up to the free video series on this website.
In an ideal world you would join a class with a well qualified Sifu who has spent at least 10 years learning from a Master of the art.
You would be able to play chi sau with instructors and other students and learn from their skills which have been built up over decades. But if you have limited availability of a good Wing Chun class nearby, online resources can help supplement your training in the mean time.
Even if you have a class, you can also benefit from online resources which compliment your training. However, don’t expect to learn a martial art well just from watching videos. You need real experience with other people who know what they’re doing!
How Can You Learn Wing Chun Online?
There are certain aspects of Wing Chun which you can learn by watching and copying videos. Without a Sifu to give you feedback this can be considerably more difficult to learn properly of course, and learning the practical applications and practicing them is another matter too.
The Wing Chun forms lend themselves quite well to distance learning. Forms are like textbooks and offer a visual “blueprint” of the Wing Chun system. They are a great place to start.
I opened a class in 2010 in Bradford, UK, and later I offered an online training aid to my students. This was a weekly video which explained the basic positions and moves in the first hand pattern (form) Siu Lim Tao.
It helped my students learn and keep motivated in training when they couldn’t make a class.

How To Improve The Easy Way
Wayne Belonoha
TIME AND TIME again, I hear people say that Wing Chun is hard. It requires hard work. That it’s the most difficult thing you’ll do. I wanted to explore this a bit because I disagree. Wing Chun is not difficult. This terminology of what is difficult encompasses many different things, so let’s dig in a bit and understand what we’re really talking about.
To start, let’s look at something that’s typically considered to be difficult. Rocket Science! Everybody agrees that learning to be a rocket scientist is difficult. Let’s consider the situation where you had 200 years to become a rocket scientist. Would it be difficult? No! It would be fun. What about becoming rich? Difficult? What about if you had 200 years? No! It would be fun. You would just buy a stock or some land and be patient.
So, the thing that makes it difficult is not the complexity. The thing that makes it difficult is having a requirement for how long it will take. And that requirement is set by you. So in essence, you are the one making the task difficult.
To reframe Wing Chun and make it (and every task) more enjoyable, replace “it’s difficult” with “it takes time”. You see, everything is easy when given enough time. Now one may argue that they don’t have enough time, it must be done more quickly. We then bump up against a universal principle well known in business and project management circles—the Triple Constraint.
When doing any piece of defined work, such as the Wing Chun curriculum, it is bound by the scope, time and cost. If you wish to do it more quickly (reduce time), you can increase the cost (get private lessons) and reduce the quality. There is a natural and universal relationship between these three. The relationship is that you get to control two of them and the universe will choose the third. You can have it cheap, fast or good—you get to pick two of the three.

David Wong is one of the world’s rare influencers who has taken the personal journey of transformation of his body, mind and spirit.
He was stricken with a chronic illness for which conventional medicine had no cure – with the only answer being to take medication for the rest of his life… which unfortunately had undesirable side effects.
He refused to accept that as the only solution and sought out holistic methods to cure his disease. After trying almost every modality he could, some worked to an extent, some didn’t work at all, but none of them worked so well that he was able to say that he was completely cured. That was until he finally discovered a little known device developed by an underground inventor.
After much experimentation, he combined this new technology with taoist qi gong practice (translated literally as “energy work” from Chinese) with electromagnetic frequency technology and finally cured himself from the disease that he suffered from for many years.
Today, in order to help others achieve their highest potential, he is the developer of the Life Force Harmonizer™, a personal transformational device based on NASA-proven technology that integrates multi-disciplinary sciences together into one human performance enhancement system.
His Life Force Harmonizer™ system is ground breaking as it blends the ancient taoist principles with scientific research on body-electrics, genetic programming and technology assisted brainwave enhancement.
He continuously works with scientists, spiritual leaders, health practitioners and martial arts masters and has discovered that “life force” is the key to health for your mind and body, a balanced lifestyle, happiness and even your ability to manifest your ideas into reality and attract prosperity.
Having practiced meditation since 10 years old, he comes from a family with a deep martial arts heritage and has the ability to manipulate electro-magnetic energy through his qi gong training. In additional to being a 3rd generation Bruce Lee student and also 3rd Generation Ip Man Student, he has studied with many martial arts masters from around the world.
It is his passion and life goal to continually stretch his limits to attain super-human health, wisdom and prosperity while mentoring students in the process who are searching to change their own lives.

I’ve never even been to a kwoon, dojo, dojang, or any other kind of Martial Arts school in my life, but I love the martial art of Wing Chun and wish to learn it. But there is no school where I live, and I have been gathering information on it every day and practicing and putting to use that which I learn. I’m just wondering if it is possible to become a self-taught expert? Not ideal. Kind of like learning to swim by reading a book or watching a video.
The Martial Art Syllabus
Show less Wing Chun is a style of kung fu that emphasizes close quarter combat, quick punches and tight defense to overcome opponents. This traditional Chinese martial art destabilizes opponents with quick footwork, defense and offense happening simultaneously, and redirecting opponent’s energy to your advantage. This is a complex kung fu method that requires years of practice to master, but beginners can easily start learning Wing Chun by understanding its principles, theories and basic skills. If you want to learn Wing Chun, start by learning about the center line theory, which involves protecting an invisible line that stretches down the middle of your body from the top of your head to your feet. If you want to take a class, find a Wing Chun Academy near you by searching online, or purchase an online lesson based on your expertise level.
Wing Chun is a very unique and scientific form of martial arts. Wing Chun’s specialty is in close contact combat, using quick punches and kicks with a tight defence, coordinated through agile stances and footwork for a quick advance. The effectiveness of this fighting style is achieved by well coordinated attacks with simultaneous defence and vise versa. Due to its effectiveness this martial art makes for an effective form of self defence. The student must learn to deliver the correct amount of energy or force, whilst staying relaxed when possible. The style uses kicks, sweeps, elbows, palm strikes, punches, trapping and control techniques as part of its fighting arsenal. There are many different parts to the Wing Chun system.

Can anybody give me some hints on learning Wing Chun? Some tutorials, Youtube channels, etc.

You can learn some forms and some strikes from watching video. but you won’t learn the stuff that makes Wing Chun effective from video. A lot of Wing Chun’s strength is sensitivity to the opponent, adapting to trap their arms, and force generation at short range. The problem, too, is that you might see “I put my arm here” when you copy the form, but you won’t know “I focus the pressure of my arm HERE” which is the trickiness to Wing Chun.
What a class or instruction gives you, that a video doesn’t, is being able to feel movement, angles, and feeling someone skilled cut through your defense and pick up those tricks yourself. Likewise, very few videos go into the conditioning that the art does as well, which is the other half of what you need to generate power in your strikes.
If you can get someone who can at least teach you and a couple of folks the basic sticky-hands drills (for a few days or weeks), you can get something from your effort, because you’ll have a live drill you can do on your own to get sensitivity.
Find and enroll in a wing chun school, then in a year test your skills in a full-contact competition.
Tutorials are for learning how to set up your programming development environment. YouTube channels are for entertainment. Neither are training. Training is becoming an athlete by working out, learning skills, and entering competitions.
I agree with Dave Liepmann, that the only real way to learn a martial art is to have a teacher who can guide you. And you need to do it two or three times a week.
But, let me offer a small amount of hope for you to learn wing-chun if you have no teacher present and no school around. If I was in your situation, and I knew that wing-chun was the only martial art I wanted to learn, no exceptions, then I would contact others near me that also wanted to learn, and we would form a group.
Our group would contact a well respected wing-chun school (for example Leung Ting’s school), and would email the instructor or their representatives. We would ask if one or more of us could come and train for, maybe, 2 weeks at a time from 9AM to 5PM doing private lessons. It would be a kind of “accelerated learning” program / “crash course”. If they accepted, we would fly there and train for those 2 weeks and then fly back home. Then at home, we would continue to train with each other, doing as best we could, correcting each other and continuing to practice 2 to 3 times per week.
At some point, say, 6 months or a year later (the sooner the better), we could fly there again and train for another 2 weeks. Repeat.
It all depends on how willing you are to travel, how much time you have, and how much you’re willing to pay.
I don’t recommend doing this alone, by the way. Without a group to train with, you are stuck doing solo forms and wooden dummy stuff. That stuff is okay, but it’s not very useful. And you would be missing out on a lot of other things. If that’s all you want, then do it. Otherwise, form a group first. Then each of you can use each other to practice with and help each other.
Not all of you in your group needs to travel, by the way. The more the better. But those that do not travel will just need to be trained by those that did travel. That can work out pretty well. You could even take turns traveling, to keep costs low and to learn more quickly.
So if you have 4 members in your group, 2 of you could go now, and the other 2 could go 6 months from now. That way, you learn twice as much as you would if all 4 of you would go only once per year. This is something you can work out amongst yourselves.
As for online courses and DVD, yes that is possible. You can learn all of the forms and wooden dummy stuff that way. But the chi-sao (partnered exercises) are not something that you can learn that way. You need an instructor to teach it to you in person and correct you. And you need a partner. And you need to do it frequently.
Anyway, those are my thoughts on the subject. You mentioned having boxing gyms near you. I would try that first, if I were you. You might discover that you enjoy it a lot. Boxing is also something that seems to work in MMA competition and street fighting.
Oh, and by the way, you might also want to look for either Judo or Brazilian Jiujitsu schools near you. Judo is pretty popular. And BJJ is getting to be popular now (in some parts of the world, it’s much more popular than Judo is). Combine that with boxing, and you have a pretty good combination.

To learn Wing Chun doesn’t take long at all. To master it, though, takes a long time so you’re right on that aspect. Based on the training schedule – 6 hrs/day daily – you’ll more likely go through the material faster, provided that you really learn and apply the concepts to your forms, and that you have a good instructor and good partners to work on drills. The thing you’ll have to understand about Wing Chun is that it’s not like other systems. I’m sure you already know this, but you will be discouraged from taking the side stance that most other martial arts take. Also, there will be some things that may feel contradictory to what your body has gotten used to. An example is how you punch, and how you stand in your stances. These may slow down your progress as you somewhat have to “unlearn” the old tools.
Actually, Wing Chun can take up to a year to be decently proficient at for purely street defense. To master it would depend on your understanding and open-mind. If you practice and learn at 1 hour a day, you should do fine, but it really depends on the lesson, who’s teaching it, your understanding of it, and your ability to apply it. However, it can seem very counter-intuitive. Wing Chun is not a what-you-see-is-what-really-happens art. When you think of forms/katas, you usually think of how each movement is applied to real-life scenarios. Unfortunately when it comes to Wing Chun, non-practitioners make the mistake of doing the same thing when all that the first form tries to do is get you to understand the importance of structure and alignment, as well as teach you all the tools found in Wing Chun.
Form #2 is the form that teaches you to move w/ the structure and alignment.
Chi Sao teaches how to read opponent intentions once you’ve bridged the gap. Wooden Dummy trains you to correct your structure and posture (it’ll hurt if it’s not “correct”).
Unfortunately, you’ll need to be careful of school’s with teachers that don’t really know what they’re doing.
A good school will focus on the concepts. The principles they should emphasize are to be simple, effective, and efficient, and realize that Wing Chun is heavily based on concepts. You will find many Wing Chun schools with focus on different aspects of Wing Chun b/c of the principle to take what works for you.
I think the best way to learn Wing Chun quickly is to take the right perspective.
If you think of Wing Chun as a highly refined Women’s Self Defense course, I’m sure you’ll understand what you need to do to shorten the time it takes to make Wing Chun work for you.
Let’s put a quick scenario out: You’re talking to your sister/mother/girlfriend/female best friend by phone. She’s using a bluetooth headset. In the middle of the conversation you hear her getting confronted by someone either mugging her or trying to subdue her to rape. What would you tell her to do? Get into boxing stance and throw jabs/crosses? Go for a take-down? Or try to kick the guy’s balls? You don’t know if her enemy is bigger and stronger than her.
Wing Chun is all about survival by letting all hell break loose. In fact, Wing Chun principles say to do whatever it takes to end the threat. That means if you have a gun, use it!
So ultimately, Wing Chun will train you to use your structure and alignment to fight, minimizing the use of muscles as much as possible. That means if you get old and frail, you should be able to decently hold your own against a mugging on the street when you’re not in your prime.
HOWEVER, if you WANT to add muscle power to your attacks, nothing is stopping you from doing so.

Is It Possible To Learn Wing Chun Quickly?
Yes, it is, and not just by way of a short cut.
To start with let’s remind ourselves that Wing Chun is designed to work in harmony with your natural body reactions and a phrase I use to teach my students is:
“If it’s not comfortable, it’s not right”
In fact I would go as far as to say, when taught properly, “It takes effort to get Wing Chun wrong!”
Now I’m not saying that what I am about to suggest is the only way to learn but think of this, if there was a way of assisting you, both to learn at your own pace AND gain a deeper understanding, through cross checking details both online AND at class, why would you not take it?
It’s a very noble pursuit to want to study Wing Chun to the finest detail and really try to master the art, but it may also be noble to want to follow your dream of being in a rock band, perform stand up comedy or wanting to learn to fly, but what if you want to do all of these AND MORE.
Is that even possible?
Yes, why not?
Oh and I am not taking the p*ss here, I am being serious, life is too short to waste time, so again I say, why not take extra help to get where you want to be?
If you want to do something, do it, and if there is a way of learning what you want faster, then why not take it?
There was a time when the so called ‘master’ would take years to teach you and therefore take you years to learn, explaining that the finest detail needs to be understood before you can move on to the next step.
Now of course there is some truth in this, BUT, a lot of this I believe is complete bull-sh*t and the students development was only delayed because of the teacher trying to earn more money, OR because the instructor didn’t actually have the knowledge, skill or capacity to take them further if they wanted to.
As Ip Man said:
“There are no secrets in Wing Chun, just hard work and practice”
The bottom line is this, if you are good enough to move on, then you should be allowed to move on.
To rush people through willy-nilly is dangerous, BUT to hold someone back, especially because of your lack of knowledge as a teacher, or fear of their progression, is just a crime.
As a teacher, if you manage to get a student to improve to such a height that they surpass even you, do not be scared of such an achievement but be proud, because this is the sign of a good teacher, provided the teacher is still training themselves of course, and has not just thrown in the towel!
There are three types of teacher:
Those who are still progressing and pushing the boundaries
Those who are still trying to improve
Those who have just given up
I’ll let you decide which one you are.
Oh and for those of you who may think I am wrong and that there are no short cuts in the pursuit of understanding, ask yourself this,
Are you the kind of person to Google information rather than go to a library and read a stack of books.
So some short cuts are ok in the search of knowledge but not others?
Remember I am not saying that online tuition should be the only way, I am just saying, why deny yourself additional help?
Classes are great, but if you only attend one, two-hour class each week, that would mean that you have six days and twenty-two hours available to forget what you were initially taught!
And who knows, throughout the rest of that week you may be drilling incorrectly!
So take knowledge where you can find it,
As Bruce Lee said:
“Take onboard what is useful and discard that which is not”

WCO Member Testimonial… Hello Sifu, I would just like to extend my congrats on a job well done. The new members only site is very informative, and very organized. It is also very well constructed. I am learning so much from your lessons. You are a pioneer in what you are doing and I am very honored to be your student. K.P. New Jersey
This Program is for Everyone!
I often hear, “You’re a big guy…of course this works for you.” NO! NO! NO! It works for everyone! Wing Chun is not based on size and strength.
I always assume, and you should too, that your attacker is Bigger, Stronger, has Weapons and Friends. Therefore, techniques that use brute strength will NEVER WORK! Little, weak people just don’t go around attacking others by themselves.
Secret Service Agents, Navy Seals, Marines, Army Soldiers, Police Officers and Prison Guards… I have instructed them all. But, everyday at my school I teach the average Joe and Jane to be exceptional Wing Chun and self defense warriors, and that is what I am going to do for you.
What you will learn are concepts and principles that work for you:
Simplicity: Do the simplest move within the realm of your safety
Economy of Movement and Energy: Big, flashy moves are simply not the solution
Don’t Fight Force with Force: Use Principles of Deflection and Redirection
Male or female, young or old. If you want to learn Wing Chun this program is for you!
I will teach you in a way only very few will…or do. I do not want you to watch and memorize a bunch of techniques. I want to make sure you understand how and why it works so that it will always work for you.
When we say a “Lesson Series” each week that is four lessons! Although your first four lessons are comprised of over 30 VIDEOS!
If this was broken down like other online programs where you pay a membership fee and then pay per clip you would be paying well over $400 a month! Here at WCO you receiving the highest level of Wing Chun instruction at a tuition rate everyone can afford!

There are many different aspects to learning Wing Chun but the main areas are:
Forms
Forms are structured patterns of techniques set into flowing routines. They are the roots of Wing Chun Kung Fu and provide an encyclopedia of techniques for the practitioner. There are 3 ‘open hand’ forms in Wing Chun followed by the Wooden Man and then Weapons.
- Siu Lim Tao (little idea form) – The starting point for all training develops structure, energy and basic techniques.
- Chum Kiu (bridging form) – Progessing from Siu Lim Tao we learn to ‘seek or ‘bridge’ the gap with an opponent. This form incorporates movement, stepping and kicking.
- Biu Tze (thrusting fingers form) – Biu Tze is an advanced attacking form using energy in different directions in combination with finger, elbow and palm strikes amongst others to create a destructive force.
- Mook Yan Jong – The Wooden Dummy or Wooden Man form encompasses stances and techniques from Siu Lim Tao, Chum Kiu and Biu Jee. It teaches movement around an opponent and application of close range energy.
- Look Dim Boon Kwan – 6 1/2 Point Pole.
- Baat Cham Dao – 8 Cutting Broadswords (Butterfly Knives). The 6 1/2 Point Pole form along with the 8 Cutting Broadswords teach advanced footwork and weapon techniques that are applicable to open hand combat as well.
From Forms to Practical Application
Learning to understand and apply the movements in the forms in done in stages:
- Individual techniques, or combinations, are developed through controlled drills that emphasise timing and focus and aim to develop a subconscious reflex.
- When the student has practiced and understood the drill we can progress to applying the same actions to a more practical scenario.
- Chi Sau, or Sticking Hands, is a method of training unique to Wing Chun which teaches sensitivity, reflexes, position and correct use of energy at close quarters. It is a bridge between the Forms and free contact fighting.
- Regular students will also receive exclusive access to the Combined Arts Online Library to further enhance their training.
How Do I Access The Online Wing Chun Lessons?

Can You Learn Wing Chun Online?
Every teacher has a minimum of 10 years of teaching experience some over 20 years. While some aspects of Wing Chun do require a partner in this present situation you can focus on elements of Wing Chun that do not. Wing Chun has a lot of solo drills and exercises that will improve your skill without the need of anyone else. Classes will be reopening but for the well-being of everyone this is the best solution for now and you will gain a great deal from it.
What Will I Learn?
The Forms in detail, how to improve power, footwork, punching, ways to relax, fitness, flexibility and a lot more!
Is This Training Open To Non Members?
Currently, this has been set up for WCKUK members while we are fighting the spread of the Covid-19 virus. Once classes resume we are considering remote training for people that don’t live near one of our locations, however, if you’d like to start now choose a location near you and contact the Sifu directly and they will get you set up. Just head over to our Locations Page.
Can I Still Grade With Online Classes?
Yes, our grading system provides a structure for learning, if this situation continues we will be offering ways to grade from home however more on this if the situation we currently face continues.
Will You Offer Online Kids Classes?
Yes. We understand that children need positive goals and good role models outside of their family environment. Our kid’s online classes will also provide Wing Chun homework and tasks to keep them focused throughout the week.
Can I Have Private Lessons?
Yes. For private lessons please ask your Sifu directly.
What Should I Do Now?

Kung Fu Lineage
Wing Chun is a very unique and scientific form of martial arts. Wing Chun’s specialty is in close contact combat, using quick punches and kicks with a tight defence, coordinated through agile stances and footwork for a quick advance.
If you already have a Wing Chun background, then self-learning and self-study with quality instructional tools can help you accelerate, polish your rough edges, provide you with a tool to invest more training time. For instance, I taught myself many things like basic computer programming and guitar.

- Sensei says Kobe sought to learn Wing Chun for NBA purposes.
User Info: KaZooo
Late NBA Legend and esteemed Emmy-Award champion Kobe Bryant was known for his multi-disciplinary capabilities. Bryant has pitched his hand towards a few non-basketball segments, such as: hip-hop, fashion, sitcom acting, learning multiple languages, and playing the piano by ear. Added to that list is the title of “martial artist”, as a Santa Ana-based instructor has recently shed light on when Bryant originally reached out to him. This supposedly took place at the start of the 2008 post season
“After that loss to Boston, Kobe was frustrated and felt a lot of discreet foul play was going on. He could build all the strength he wanted, but that’s not stopping all the shoves and tugs that take place in tight basketball play. It’s dirty on the floor. Around that time he had this obsession with Bruce Lee, and was pretty philosophical about that — asking me about Bruce Lee vs. so-and-so NBA player. We mostly agreed Bruce Lee would win.
It came to the point where he was convinced he had to become Bruce Lee on the court. He had a Nike shoe inspired by Bruce. [Nike Zoom Kobe Byrant V “Bruce Lee”, released in 2010]
I steered him to being smart about it. I didn’t know actual Jeet Kune Do — well, nobody does except Bruce — but I figured the art of Wing Chun Kuen would be perfect. It’s all close range combat, quick, and could easily blend in with the typical NBA checks and shoving. Not many people know this, but that’s why he went to China. It wasn’t for the Olympic games, but to learn from the best in secret.”
The anonymous instructor noted that Bryant’s most apparent use of Wing Chun was during the 2009 playoffs vs. the Houston Rockets and Ron Artest. He was impressed by how fast Bryant developed in the art and adapted it into his NBA play.
“You can see how much he works his arms to get leverage and control of Artest’s positioning. Artest really didn’t know how to deal with that after all his years of his own cheating. I think after that though, Kobe knew people might catch on, especially with that throat strike, so he toned things down. Of course Artest joined the Lakers, too. But I’ve watched Kobe’s games to the end, Laker fan for life. He definitely used moves on the regular and surprisingly never took somebody’s life on the court.”
It is not certain as to what degree Bryant had achieved in his Wing Chun practice, but it is believed that he had attained some sort of expert level given his frequent employment.
Wing Chun Kung Fu is a style that is well-known across the world. Based on reflexive movements, this system allows a practitioner to defend themselves when caught unarmed or within a surprise situation. Made popular by actor Bruce Lee and Donnie Yen, Wing Chung is a very recognizable style of martial arts that is suitable for any person to learn and practice.
What is Wing Chun Kung Fu?
Wing Chun Kung Fu is a fighting style that focuses on eliminating opponents as fast and as efficiently as possible. To do this, the attacks are aimed at the centerline of the opponent, which is a vertical line from the crown of the head straight down to the crotch.
The centerline of the body contains every vital point to attack for maximum impact with minimum force. Areas within the centerline include the eyes, nose, chin, throat, solar plexus, navel, groin, and knees. Not only are these points very painful to endure, but they can also cover vital organs. Repeatedly attacking centerline areas will deliver pain and possible internal damage.
When you strike an opponent on the centerline, you ensure that the body of the opponent absorbs the full force of the attack. You can see this principle in motion when you punch a boxing bag. When you hit the bag off-center, some of that impact is redirected, spinning the bag. If you hit the bag in the center, the impact cannot go anywhere else, and the bag absorbs the full impact of the blow. The same is true for the human body. If you hit an opponent’s body off-center, that impact will make the torso turn or spin. When you hit your opponent in the middle of his body along the centerline, the body absorbs the full impact of the blow.
Who Can Learn Wing Chun Kung Fu?
The Wing Chun philosophy is all about technique and not brute force or strength. This means that a smaller practitioner of this martial art with superior technique can beat a larger or stronger opponent. This style of Kung Fu can be successfully taught to anyone interested to learn, regardless of physical appearance.
Aside from good health and physical fitness, there are no physical requirements to become a good Wing Chun Kung fu practitioner. However, that does not mean that learning this style of martial arts is easy. As with any martial arts skill, it will take time and dedication to learn, understand, and fully master these kung fu techniques.
Can I Use Wing Chun Kung Fu In A Street Fight?
Wing Chun is highly effective in street fights. In fact, it was designed for that sole purpose. All Wing Chung techniques have one goal: to take your opponent out. The extreme efficiency of the Wing Chung techniques is one of the reasons that this martial arts style does not exist as a competitive sport.
Of course, when practitioners train this style, it is of utmost importance to be considerate towards training partners. Beginners start a training schedule where they practice techniques without partners and skills on wooden dummies while they learn the importance of training etiquette and how to not hurt your sparring partner.
The Importance Of The Wing Chun Stance
This martial art has several recognizable characteristics: the centerline, the stance, and emphasis on balance. This stance is such that the feet are at shoulder width with the toes pointing inwards. Knees are bent, and the thighs are rotated inward as if you are trying to squeeze something between them. Fists are held to the sides with elbows tucked in close to the body. This stable stance forms the basis of every attack and counter-attack. View the correct stance in the image below.
With this stance, posture is very important. When your body is aligned and straight, it provides a connection to the ground, which will reinforce the strength of your punch or kick. It will also help you recover from an attack much faster.
Wing Chun practitioners are prone to use footwork to get closer to an opponent rather than a strike or kick that could compromise their balance. Attacks such as high kicks force a fighter to expose vulnerable areas, and that is the last you want during a street fight.
“The Wing Chun Kung Fu stance is like a piece of bamboo. Firm but flexible. Rooted but yielding.”
The Origins of Wing Chun Kung Fu
There are many overlapping or conflicting stories about the origin of Wing Chun Kung Fu. However, the most widespread story involves the nun Ng Mui teaching this art to a young woman named Wing Chun. Wing Chun was taught the art of Wing Chun to defeat a warlord who wanted to marry her. Wing Chun used the art of Wing Chung to defeat the warlord and then went on to marry her love, Leung Bok Chau. After their marriage, Wing Chun taught her husband the art. Leung Bok Chau then taught another student to who also passed this martial art on as well.
From this image, you can see the long list of students and masters that span the generations. As this martial art passed from master to student down the line, each generation added on and incorporated their own techniques and skills such as swords, wooden man keys, or six-and-a-half-point long pole technique. Today, this this graceful martial art is still popular through the mainstream and we continue to teach it at the Maling Shaolin Kungfu Academy.
Wing Chun Singapore: LIST a method to learn Wing Chun
Learning Wing Chun or any martial arts for that matter can be a daunting task. It is easy to hit the ceiling in your practice and get lost in the forest of details. When this occurs, students often lose confidence in their training, and many will give up.
In this article, I want to share with you my views on how you can keep your Wing Chun training alive and develop your critical thinking skills.
How to practice Wing Chun?
Learning is a process, and by understanding the various stages or hierarchy of that process, you have a better idea “where you are” and what is the next logical next steps in your training.
Martial arts or Wing Chun practice for that matter can be broken down into four (4) processes. I call them “LIST,” an acronym for LEARN, INTEGRATE, STRATEGY, and TESTING. It is a hierarchal and interactive model. Hereafter I will discuss the various stages of the learning process.
Learn
This stage is about learning the basics of a technique. For example, how to execute a straight punch. Beginning students often “do too much,” ask them to punch and they pull back the other hand or lose their balance by overcommitting.
I always tell them, go through the simple motion; don’t add variables like speed, power and do not daydream about applications.
Feel your body alignments, train slowly. Look at yourself in the mirror when you do the technique or ask feedback from your teacher or fellow student.
Integrate
Here you practice how to integrate or combine the techniques you have learned so far. Integration requires good mind/body coordination and proper technique (!).
For instance, you step and punch, how do you maintain your body unity and use your body mass. Make sure that after every combination technique, you return to your basic structure so that you can seamlessly transit into another position or technique. Lots of sweat and drilling, alone or with a partner.
Strategy
This is the application phase. Here you experiment, develop your game plan, or become an expert in specific attributes, for example:
- One punch KO power, an unstoppable combination
- Setups for entries: develop feints, break rhythm (full/ half beats, slow/fast, light/ heavy)
- Pressing, breaking structure or counter-punching game.
- Sparring games are great fun to develop specific skills or attributes.
- For example, Lead hand only sparring, kicker versus boxer, toe-to-toe sparring, body sparring, etc.
Testing
You did a lot of practice, drilling and experimenting now the “rubber meets the road.”The abstract becomes a reality! ! Now you learn from “live” training with a non-cooperative partner. Test and learn from your mistakes and shortcomings and “Invest in your losses”
At this stage, less is more. Here you want to carve out your game and focus on the techniques that work for you. Many Chinese martial arts (including Wing Chun) don’t include this training. They stop at the “strategy stage” It is a pity because live training is one of your best learning opportunities. To learn is to be inquisitive and get immediate feedback on your training. Ask questions (why, what, which, when, and how) find the answers and stimulate your critical thinking skills.
Why I was not able to counter/ perform that technique…?
Which stage (LIST) am I for this technique
What mistake did I make, when I …?
How can I improve my sparring game? Etc.
Go back and forward in the various stages and break your questions down to its smallest unite. The devil is in the detail.
Conclusion
In this post, I discussed the LIST method, a method for learning Wing Chun. It is a conceptual and hierarchical framework for learning Wing Chun. It can help both the beginner and advanced student to identify and understand how to improve their Wing Chun training. A method or tool that can help you take responsibility for your progress in Wing Chun!
I hope you find this useful! Looking forward to hearing from you if you have any questions or comments.

The problem is, I’m searching up places to learn Wing Chun and I don’t know if the instructors are good or not. If anybody could tell me places where I could learn Wing Chun with good instructors in Melbourne that would be fantastic 🙂
So far I have found these
– this one is one that my friend goes to, I heard someone say the good places to learn Wing Chun are hidden away and this is down a small alley near a coffee shop
Out of these which school do you guys think is the best?

All martial arts have their own advantages and disadvantages. It’s how much effort you put into it that matters. And you do need an instructor. It’s not the same without.
Wing Chun Melbourne
Don’t know whether you’ve found a good place for learning Wing chun or not but if you’re still interested in learning wing chun, I’ve something good to offer. I believe Wing chun (and most other types of martial arts) would be best learned and taught one on one.
I offer a type of Wing chun that is special and quite different from all the links you mentioned above (I’ve trained martial arts for 10 years and been training wing chun for 4 years now and I’ve been through all ththose schools in the links you mentioned). Reasonable negotiable rate approx. $35/one on one lesson. Can me for lessons at anywhere which is convenient for both of us.
If you’re interested shoot me an email [email protected]
I wouldn’t start off with wing chun. but It is a very efficient martial art if used correctly. I’ve heard wing chun is difficult to master. if you have no fighting experience any martial art is good. think about how you would like to fight an opponent and what your strengths are as a fighter. you may not know this now, but when and if you do, it could help you choose. I myself have puny arms, a potbelly and massive legs. I didn’t know what I wanted at the time, I guess i was lucky and i ended up doing tae-kwon-do which focuses on kicks.
all martial arts have limitations. they have to otherwise you would get hurt easily learning. some more than others. like Tae-kwon-do, which has no groundfighting, and half the stuff they teach in forms isn’t put into practice in sparring. wing chun is also limited in that there are no ground fighting techniques if you are taken to the ground.

Internal Wing Chun Kung Fu
Wing Chun Kung Fu is often taught as a “hard” or “external” style. There are few schools that teach the internal method of Wing Chun.
When learnt the internal way, it is an extremely powerful martial art.
When people first start learning Wing Chun they learn how to block with their tan sau, or their bong sau. They are taught what technique to use in the right situation. Given a list of techniques, and training them continuously. This is learning the external way.
To focus internally on your Wing Chun, you need to study the forms in depth. You need to feel your body, and know every part of it. You need to learn how to relax, relax enough so you can feel how your joints move. This is the internal way, to discover your own body, how it moves and how it can generate destructive power.В
You need to be able to feel your body, before you can connect it together to use as destructive force on others.
Wing Chun without any internal thought is a very weak martial art. Bong Sau is a very weak position. Chain punching is easily overcome, the hand positions are awkward. The punch is so close, that only big people can generate power.
If one study’s their own body internally, they can find out how to relax and connect their body parts together. Imagine who can punch harder, a big strong man with a 10kilo arm, or a 40kg female who has discovered that with relaxing she can emit her whole body weight in her strike. To me, the more interesting of the two is the one who can connect her body weight.
With an external way of learning, or a hard style of martial art, to get more power one has to do physical training to gain strength and fitness. For someone learning a good internal style of Wing Chun, this is not the case. Although fitness is good for your well-being and health, it is not the way to learn internal martial arts. One must learn how to relax, release the tension in your body. Tension stops the connection from taking place and isolates your muscles into individual parts rather than connecting the body as one unit. Fitness training is recommended for well-being and health, but not necessarily to be good at an internal art.
For an Internal Wing Chun practitioner, doing the forms, and chi sau (the things that are unique to wing chun) is the way to get stronger. And this is not stronger in the physical sense, but you feel stronger to others.
I would challenge people reading this article to look up Chu Shong Tin on the internet. This man is now about 80 years old, and if you can see what he can do, you would agree that he is extremely powerful. For me, he encompasses what Wing Chun is all about. He is old, small (60kgs), but still can generate more force than anyone I have seen. This is rather similar to the story that Wing Chun was invented by a female. Wing Chun in its purest form has to be learnt as an internal style, otherwise it’s origins and the kuen kuit (training tips that are handed down) do not make sense.
Once one can learn the internal power of the body, and use the mind to focus it’s force, it has devastating potential.
Learning the art of Wing Chun, a Chinese form of martial arts, can increase your ability to attack and defence considerably. Like any other martial arts, it is an art comprising of comprehensive skills, which require years of practice to master.
One of the basic principles of Wing Chun is movements, which adds to the importance of learning and master Siu Lim Tao. There are a few things that you need to do in order to become good at Siu Lim Tao, though it is not an easy task and will demand a lot from you.

It is really important to find a good Wing Chun instructor, someone who can guide you through the process of learning Siu Lim Tao. Even though it is one of the most basic lessons that a Wing Chun student learns, it is not the simplest. This is hardly surprising since Siu Lim Tao forms the bedrock of Wing Chun. Scout your area for a Wing Chun master, someone who has spent years mastering the Chinese martial arts form. Get registered in their academy and take the classes regularly. There is hardly any better way of learning Siu Lim Tao than by the master himself. He will be able to help you out by letting you know about the areas which need more practice.
You can also learn Siu Lim Tao by following the video guides online. Wing Chun instructors and schools are not easy to come by, especially if you are living in a country where this particular form of martial arts is not very popular. In situations like these, Internet can help you perfect your movements through online guides. Free video sharing website YouTube has various Siu Lim Tao guides, prepared by Wing Chun masters themselves. Follow these guides closely.
Reading about Siu Lim Tao is an important part of learning what is considered to be the basic principles of Wing Chun. By reading about it, you will be able to understand the motions and therefore have a sense of purpose attached to the movement. One thing to keep in mind, though, is that you will still have to rely on practical experience to perfect the Siu Lim Tao.
It is really important to keep in mind that in martial arts, the place where you are right now is indeed the perfect place to begin your training.
In order to perfect your motions, you will have to really commit to the training and make a genuine effort to get better at it, instead of hoping to learn the motions in a few days’ time. Keep trying hard and commit to the training session.
In the past i use to go to this school that taught wing chun kung fu,but the sifu(chinese for instructor)moved to a far far away city.Kung fu is more complex than most other martial arts, for the result that wing chun helps you fight opponents way stronger, taller, and faster than you.
For example,Bruce Lee was born in America, but him and his parents moved back to Hong Kong when bruce Lee was three months old.Bruce Lee learned wing chun when he was 14 and came back to America when he was 18,but never told anyone how long it took him to master wing chun, because wing chun was one of the last styles of kung fu,and wing chun was named after a woman who developed.
But no one has ever told me how long it takes to learn and master wing chun.I love wing chun and want to go back and continue to learn it,but I live up state New York where there aren’t many many wing chun schools, mostly Tae kwon do.

If you live in New York, do boxing. They’ve got legends coaching in your area. Just because a fighting style is asian or complex doesn’t mean it awesome. Trust me, when you fighting someone and they’re trying to cave your face it, your not going to be thinking about your ‘super duper technique’ or anything like that, you’ll either freak out or try to cave his face in back. Stick to simple, this is fighting, we’re not building tanks. Boxings the way to go in New York. Maybe even MMA, I think you’ve got some decent fighters in the area as well.
You have to take the different styles of martial arts for what they were meant for. Mantis was meant for fighting in thin air, crane techniques were developed to help people fight in cold climates with ice patches on the ground while wearing gloves that would prevent holds. Wing Chun was meant for fighting in tight, low light areas such as an alley. It’s really just a piece of the puzzle though. Wing Chun is just a single section of the Chinese Martial arts and shouldn’t be your main focus. That in mind, Kung Fu takes years to become effective at. You’ll see friends getting their black belts in Karate before you’ve even had a real sparring match and they will be able to beat the daylights out of you until you’ve been studying for five or six years. If you enjoy Wing Chun, then do it but don’t do it with an end-goal in mind and don’t let some milestone with it end your martial arts journey..
okay. assuming you found a good teacher, you are likely to learn at a much faster rate than the average person. It may take longer because Wing Chun will be totally different compared to other forms of fighting, and will require that you break out of habits that might have been formed from training in other fighting styles. However long it takes, I think I can help speed up that process by pointing out some things to understand about Wing Chun. If you already understand some of these, then you’re more prepared to be patient in learning what you need to learn. I’m just stating them since most people usually don’t understand Wing Chun unless they’ve done it. ————————————–. All the forms and drills have a specific purpose. Don’t try to apply them to fighting just yet. For example: the first form you will learn is Siu Nim Tao (or various spellings of it). This form teaches you the tools that exist in Wing Chun, stability, and that the power behind your attacks using Wing Chun comes from the ground, through your hips, through your elbows, and out forward to the opponent. In the second form Chum Kiu, the main idea/principle taught is that doing 2 motions in 1 will increase the power of your attack. i.e, try pulling an opponent with just your arm vs pulling an opponent using your arm and using your body for torque/power at the same time. Chi Sao trains sensitivity and how to feel your opponent’s next intended motion. Wooden dummy training is usually used to correct your structure, not condition your arms into steel. You should not be attacking it like you would a punching bag. ————————————–. I don’t know if mixing MMA into Wing Chun will work. In theory it would clash with many of the principles of Wing Chun, but give it a try and see how it goes. I think you’ll find that Wing Chun principles will work well with MMA.
I see some generalizations and some ignorance here. Someone can spend the rest of his life learning better ways to clean his fingernails, but that does not mean you cannot do it well the first day you try it. Saying it takes a lifetime to master any martial art is not a real answer to this question. Of course, an expert can constantly refine his techniques, but that is not what you are asking. Bruce Lee is not a good example to use here. He studied Wing Chun about five years, but he was a bad pupil who exasperated his sifu Yip man. he was too immature to learn properly and so egotistical that he tried to say he was much better than he actually was. I joined some Yahoo Groups recently, and they led me to Yahoo Answers. The group owner and I both got our sashes in Wing Chun in a year for me and less for him. Wing Chun is one of the simplest styles, very likely the simplest of all, so an excellent student who works hours every day can master it in a year or so. If someone is just average and does not work much, it can take years to learn, just like any other style. I, for one, am out early every morning and practice about 5:00 to 8:00 AM, and usually in the evening as well a couple of hours after classes. Someone who mentions black belts in connection with any Chinese style displays his ignorance. As someone said, Korean and Japanese experts hold black belts, but Chinese experts have sashes of gold.
