Continuing its reign as one of the must-play online games this summer, the Password Game, created by Neal Agarwal (AKA Neal Fun), invites players to create an increasingly complex password that satisfies all of the game’s criteria. But one of the twists is that the game continuously updates its rules. One of the ways this manifests is in the emoji round, where you are required to add the current moon phase to your password.
What is the current moon phase?
As of Tuesday, July 18, the current moon phase is a new moon. This means that the moon is so close to the Sun in the sky that none of the face pointing toward Earth is illuminated. It means that the moon is positioned directly between the Earth and the Sun; all we can see is the shadowy outline of the moon.
This is often the first position in the moon phase cycle. What then follows is a waxing crescent before we reach the first quarter, the half-lit moon seen highest in the sky at sunset.
There are eight moon phases which the moon moves through each month. They are in order: new moon, waxing crescent, first quarter, waxing gibbous, full moon, waning gibbous, third quarter, and waning crescent.

This is not to be confused with the “New Moon Face” emoji, which sees a new moon with a smiling cartoon face illustrated across it. This was included in the same Unicode 6.0 batch and added to Emoji 1.0. There is also a “Full Moon Face” which was added concurrently.
