How to factory reset the kwikset kevo

If you’re planning on selling your Kwikset Kevo, or just moving to another house and don’t plan to take it along with you, here’s how to factory reset it so your digital keys are completely erased from it.

Unfortunately, the process isn’t as obvious as Kwikset could have made it, since none of the buttons on the lock say “reset”, and there’s no way to reset the lock from the app. Luckily, we’re here to help (and it literally just takes 10 seconds).

Start by removing the black assembly cover by pushing it upward and sliding it out.

Locate the small button labeled “A”. It will be near the top-left corner of the lock.

Press and hold this button for about ten seconds until you hear the lock beep and the lights on the outside portion of the lock flash red.

Once this happens, release the button and you’ll be good to go! The Kevo is now ready for its new owner. Again, this will completely erase all of your current digital keys, as well as any fobs that you have connected to it. So make sure that you reset the lock after you’re positive that you won’t use it anymore.

Answers

You may reset the lock by pressing the Premis Button “A” on the back panel for 20 seconds. This method will bring the lock to factory default condition but not trigger the handing process.

A factory reset will delete all codes associated with the lock. 1. Make sure the door is open and unlocked. 2. Press and hold the program button for 30 seconds using the SmartKey tool or a paper clip. You will hear one long beep. 3. Press and release the program button. You will hear one short beep. 4. Test with an existing User code, the lock should not work.

Press enter arrow. The latch bolt will extend and retract to learn the orientation of the door. If successful, you will hear 2 beeps. If unsuccessful, you will hear 3 beeps (make sure the door is open and unlocked and that you are using a fresh set of batteries). 6. Test the lock: Activate the screen. With the door open and unlocked, press the Lock symbol. Make sure it locks the door. 7. Test the default User Code: Activate the screen. Touch the random digits that appear. Enter the default User Code (1-2-3-4), then press the Lock symbol. Make sure it unlocks the door. The default Programming Code is 0-0-0-0. It is recommended that you change it to a code of your own. The lock is pre-programmed with a default User Code of 1-2-3-4. It is recommended that you delete this code.

Having a smart lock on your home can offer a lot of benefits for ease (or denial) of access, but sometimes situations arise where you need to reset the lock. Maybe you bought a home with an existing Kwikset Halo Smart Lock and you want to remove all the registered uses of that lock, or you’ve lost your phone, or changed your internet provider. Maybe the lock mysteriously stopped functioning, or upon initial programming attempts something went wrong.

Whatever the reason, smart locks generally feature reset functions. I’m going to go through the three different reset options for the Kwikset Halo Smart Lock. These resets apply to the touch pad, keypad and fingerprint versions of the Halo smart lock.

Kwikset Halo 99380 and 99390 Reset Options

The Different Types of Kwikset Halo Resets:

Network Reset:

Kwikset’s Network reset deletes all Wi-Fi settings, Bluetooth pairings, user associations, and removes the lock from the associated account. This reset option keeps all existing access codes and lock settings. A network reset is most useful when:

• Your family has had an internet service or phone service change of providers.
• You’ve taken the smart lock to a new home and want to continue using the existing codes.

Halo System Reset:

This reset deletes all existing access codes and lock settings (including lock handing). This would be appropriate if your user codes have been compromised.

Factory Reset:

This combines the above two resets and brings the lock back to its initial factory settings. This is what you want to do if you’ve just moved into a home that has an existing lock.

How To Factory Reset a Kwikset Halo Lock

1. Open the door and extend the bolt.

1. Remove the interior side cover by sliding it up. There may be side screws holding it in place, if so remove.

The LED will flash green and red, and the mechanical process to determine handing will automatically begin. The LED will flash green if auto-handing is successful or red if it is not.

Repeat from step 1 if needed.

This reset mode also resets the handing of the lock, and it will enter an automated mechanical sequence to re-hand the lock for your door. If it’s unsuccessful, the lock will beep 5 times and the LED will be red.

Repeat from step 1 if unsuccessful.

Re-keying locks can sometimes be a pain, since you usually need to get a locksmith to do it for you. However, with Kwikset’s SmartKey technology, you can re-key a lock in under a minute. Here’s how to do it.

For this guide, we’ll be using a Kwikset Kevo smart lock, but many newer Kwikset locks come with this same SmartKey technology. If you’re not sure about your own lock, take a close look at it and see if there’s a tiny oval hole next to the keyhole. If so, then it’s a SmartKey lock.

Before you get started, though, you’ll need a few things:

• The current key that goes with the lock.
• A Kwikset SmartKey tool (One should’ve came with your lock, but if not, you can buy one on Amazon).
• The new (or rather, old) key that you want to use instead. This must be a Kwikset key, as Kwikset and Schlage keys are totally different from one another (and won’t work in each other’s locks). So if the rest of your house uses Schlage keys…you’ll need a separate key for the Kevo, unfortunately.

Start by inserting the original key into the lock and turning it clockwise 90 degrees.

With the key still in the lock, take the SmartKey tool and insert it into the small hole next to the keyhole. Push it in firmly and you might hear or feel a tiny click. After that, remove the SmartKey tool.

Next, without rotating the key lock, remove the key and then insert the new key. Make sure that it’s all the way in the lock.

From there, simply rotate the key 90 degrees counterclockwise. You’ll hear a definite click. At this point, the key and lock should be straight up and down.

Now, to make sure that the lock has successfully been re-keyed, keep the key in the lock and rotate it back 90 degrees clockwise. Then try to remove the key. If the key doesn’t come out, then the re-keying was successful.

After that you can rotate it back and remove the key. Make sure that the key can actually lock and unlock the door. Once you’ve confirmed that, you’re good to go!

I installed the modern “Tavaris” handle in combination with the Kevo for a deadbolt on top. Installing door handles is one of the simplest home improvements around. As simple as it is sometimes lining up the bolts is not always easy with paper templates and since you don’t want to drill more than one hole in your door, try this trick I invented. After you mark where you plan to drill, put in a small nail and hold up your door handle. See if the hole lines up with the nail and make sure the handle is level. If it all lines up, remove the nail, line up your drill and drill away!

Thieves are probably bummed out that for a year they missed scoring some sweet lego sets, school projects and massive family portraits from my house.
