DS Mario Kart DS
In this page, Mini-Turbo (or, power-slide turbo boost) is abbreviated as MT.
Memory Addresses
| Short Description | Offset | Size | Explanation |
|---|---|---|---|
| X, Y, Z pos | +0x80, 84, 88 | 4 bytes | Your kart’s location |
| Speed | +0x2A8 | 4 bytes | Your speedometer. Watch the difference in position too. |
| Maximum Speed | +0xD0 | 4 bytes | Your speed cannot exceed this value. PRB locks it; otherwise it increases when you jump off an uphill slope or angle your kart downwards in the air |
| Boost Timer | +0x238 | 4 bytes | How many frames remain for your current boost. |
| MT Time | +0x30C | 4 bytes | How many frames you must wait before the next MT charge level. |
| Angle Facing | +0x236 | 2 bytes | The direction you are facing. |
| Drift Angle | +0x388 | 2 bytes | Add this to Angle Facing to get the direction your kart is trying to go. |
| Vertical Angle | +0x234 | 2 bytes | The up/down angle of your kart in the air. |
| Turning Loss | +0x2D4 | 4 bytes | Tells you how much speed you are sacrificing by turning. Only takes effect on the ground and when not drifting. (Does not affect the Speed value.) |
| Grip | +0x240 | 4 bytes | Tells you how slippery the road is. A value of zero would mean that turning is impossible. (Regular road is always the same, other roads depend on your kart choice.) |
| Air | +0x3DD | 1 byte | 0 means you are on the ground. |
| Spawn Point | +0x3C4 | 4 bytes | Tells you where lakitu will drop you. Set when you fall off the course. |
| Direction Sine, Cosine | +0x60, 70 | 4 bytes | (20.12 Fixed Point value) The sine and cosine of the angle at which you are moving. The game uses these values to determine your movement. |
| Target Sine, Cosine | +0x50, 58 | 4 bytes | (20.12 Fixed Point value) Direction Sine/Cosine will approach these values by some percentage (dependent on Grip) each frame. These are the values changed by your angle. |
The pointer for the last Key Checkpoint you activated is at 0x21661B4 (either USA or EUR (?. Offset is +0x620. (1 byte) This is useful when doing shortcuts that require going forward a bit first, such as the shortcuts on Rainbow Road.
Here is a lua script for DeSmuME that displays all the values listed above.
Tricks
- Prolonged Rocket Boost (PRB): A well-known glitch: If you keep using MTs fast enough that your boost timer never reaches 0, you can drive offroad without losing any speed. This can also be done with a boost pad instead of the starting boost.
- Using a mushroom boost will set a different boost timer. When this timer hits 0 PRB will be lost.
- PRB prevents Maximum Speed from going above top boosting speed; therefore, it can be useful to lose PRB in order to gain speed from hopping up steep slopes.
- Fast fall: When making a large jump, it is usually beneficial to hold up. Not doing so could cause you to slow down when your boost wears out. This happens because pressing up increases your Maximum Speed, keeping it above current speed even after your boost wears out. (This can sometimes be combined with hopping uphill to get better speed boosts upon landing.)
- Starting Turn: Turning while not drifting slows you down. However, there is one frame before you start moving when pressing left/right will change Turning Loss without actually turning your kart. By pressing left/right on this frame, and then the other direction the next frame, you can turn a bit without losing any speed.
- Lap Timer Bug: Mario Kart DS allows you to have a lap time that is not an interval of 1/60th of a second (1 frame). However, this partial-frame time is NOT used as the starting time of your next lap’s timer. Thus, any “time” between the finish line and your position the frame after crossing it is not counted. See this video for a demonstration of this effect.
- Driving into the air: Normally, drifting into the air (e.g., going off a ramp) slows you down. To prevent this slow-down, drive off while your Drift Angle is 0, or as close to it as possible. This can’t always be done, but is very easy to do in places like GCN Luigi Circuit when driving off the boost pads.
- Tight/Wide Drifting: When using a kart that does not have good drifting abilities, pressing outside (left on a right drift or vice versa) near the start of a drift will cause you to turn more inside than pressing neutral (neither left or right). In the case of ROB’s BLS kart, this effect lasts 10 frames. Each frame reduces the strength of the effect.
- Note that this does not happen on the first frame after landing. In order to charge a MT as fast as possible while turning tight, do not press outside to start the charging on the first frame possible; wait 1 frame so that pressing outside will turn you inside.
- Left+Right: Pressing left and right at the same time turns you exactly as if you were only holding left. However, the right press can still be used to charge a MT. (This only works if you were already holding left the frame before you press left+right.)
- Exiting a drift: Turning Loss does not take effect when drifting, but is changed by pressing left/right. Press left/right just before exiting a drift to get it as low as possible. (When drifting tight, pressing 2 frames neutral, 2 frames outside, 1 frame inside to charge, 1 frame outside+release gets it very low. When drifting wide, 2 neutral, 1 inside to charge, 1 inside+release gets it very low.)
- Drift turning in air: When you are in the air during a drift, pressing either left or right will slow your turn, eventually stopping the turn. Not pressing either will result in turning inside.
- Slowing down: The best way to slow down from top speed is not to simply press B. Pressing A+B will decrease your speed by a percentage each frame. At high speeds, this percentage is a greater decrease than the fixed decrease from simply pressing B.
- Wall clip: When you hit a wall (or other wall-like obstacle), your Drift Angle is set to zero. If you hit the wall at the very end of the wall, your speed will not go down to zero and you can continue driving past the wall. This can be very useful for making sharp turns.
- Many walls are off-road, which doesn’t provide as much Grip as road does. When clipping these walls you will have to wait extra frames to get your speed back up. (The low grip will affect your movement speed, not your Speed value.)
- Boxes, pipes and mission gates can be clipped with no Speed loss. I (Suuper) have yet to see such a clip on a regular wall, though.
- Hopping on the same frame you hit the wall will allow you to go some extra distance with the direction you had before the clip.

Nintendo’s decade-old franchise gets the DS treatment. Is this sequel as Super as the original?
Mario Kart DS’s production value is almost staggering. The development team worked an unbelievable amount of focus in nearly every aspect of this racing design, pushing a huge amount of effort in both the single player experience as well as the multiplayer competition. The gameplay depth is absolutely stunning — Mario Kart DS is incredibly deep in features, so don’t be surprised if you forget about some options because some other mode grabbed you by the crotch and refuses to let go. And that’s a good thing.
The DS game admittedly has a lot to live up to, what with the game following only two years after the GameCube game that many people (myself included) believed that went too far away from the original game’s feel. But this portable game brings the series back to the basics of what made the original Super Mario Kart so awesome, with the development team balancing and tweaking the gameplay so intricately that it’s near impossible to find any hard fault with the design.
If you’ve missed any of the Mario Kart games in the series’ past, shame on you. The series has never been about realistic racing, but that’s its charm — players still have to employ some proper racing skill and strategy, but the power-up element can throw off even the best driver. These power-ups are the gameplay’s “equalizer;” there’s nothing more humbling than taking a turtle shell up the tailpipe, or being knocked down to second from a well-positioned banana peel. Many companies have tried to best the classic Mario Kart design with their own take, but none have had the gameplay succeed as well as Nintendo.
Mario Kart DS is, at its core, the “best of the Mario Kart best.” Nintendo’s designers clearly took a good, long, hard look at what made each game in the series the classic Kart design the franchise has been known for. It’s not just in the course designs, either; granted, half of the tracks in Mario Kart DS are “reprints” from the past Mario Kart games on the Super NES, N64, Game Boy Advance, and GameCube, but that’s only half the nostalgia. The kart mechanics, handling, and techniques are a mishmash of elements from all games in the series, from the kart hopping of the SNES original to the powersliding and boosting from the GameCube sequel. As a result of this focus, the racing design of Mario Kart DS is remarkably tight and responsive with tons of strategy that are both apparent and hidden, and even with weeks out on the courses you still may find one or two techniques that’ll take a few ticks off the clock.

No more hopping needed
The first mobile Mario Kart game is here. Well, unless you like your mobile games to be more of the handheld Game Boy/DS/3DS/Switch variety. But if you play your games on-the-go on a smartphone then this is your chance to find out what all the fuss is about. Mario Kart Tour has arrived for Android and iOS, though it’s currently in closed beta and not full release. To help you get started earning coins and winning races we wanted to break down some of the gameplay elements of the series and how they work in this new mobile world. Here’s how to drift in Mario Kart Tour on Android and iOS.
How to Drift in Mario Kart Tour
One of the things that smartphone games typically try to do is simplify the controls. There’s no smattering of buttons to choose from like there is on the Switch and other Nintendo handheld devices. Everything has to be managed on the touchscreen and with that usually comes much easier to manage elements like drifting. For Mario Kart Tour the answer to how to drift is much simpler than on its larger cousins, since the game sort of handles it for you.
To drift you simply need to make your turn as sharply as possible. There’s no jumping or button presses to initiate a drift, it happens automatically as you enter the turn. Your boost at the end will also trigger automatically as you straighten out. So drifting in Mario Kart Tour is more about maintaining and holding your turn until you achieve the desired boost level (blue for single, yellow for double), then straightening out to trigger it when it will most benefit you.
For example, if there’s a sharp turn coming up, you can try to get a double boost off of it by entering it at a decent angle, then making the turn sharply and straightening out at the end. For longer turns you can actually get a couple of boosts out of it. Simply initiate a drift by turning a bit sharper than you need to, then letting it build up. Once it’s ready, straighten out to get the boost then start turning again to get into another drift. This is similar to “Snaking” as seen in the other titles, where players try to always be drifting and boosting around the track.
Alternatively you can enable Manual Drift in the game’s settings. This unlocks a third boost (purple) and allows more direct control over your kart. Once enabled you will need to release and tap the screen to hop and initiate a boost then release the screen to boost out of it. Everything else remains the same.
And that’s pretty much all there is to know about how to drift in Mario Kart Tour. It’s a simpler mechanic overall, but that also makes for more complex choices from the player. Figuring out when to drift can be tough as you make your way around the many tracks found in the game.

I recently wrote a lengthy preview of Mario Kart DS where I said I’d let you know if it was the best game in the series so far. Well, this is the review, and here’s my answer: Yes! This is the best Mario Kart to date. These are bold words given my love of the SNES original, but the fine folks at Nintendo have outdone themselves once again. Mario Kart DS has the best kart racing, the finest multiplayer, and the most stuff to see and do of any game in the genre. And it’s all happening on the Nintendo DS.
What makes the whole package so attractive is its simplicity its depth. It also represents the first title to feature fully online WiFi gameplay, and while there are some irritating issues here, it’s a fantastic step in the right direction, trumping anything currently available on Sony’s PSP system in terms of online enjoyment.
The single-player game is utterly flawless. The same tried-and-tested precision gameplay from the SNES game carries over here, along with various tweaks and improvements from the other previous iterations of the game. Turbo-dash starts, turbo power slides, and the new turbo-gaining drafting all work as intended and help refine the game for those that want the most out their driving prowess.
The legendary grand prix mode offers the usual 50cc, 100cc, and 150cc cups, each comprised of eight cups. The new nitro grand prix cups offer 16 all-new courses, while the retro grand prix affords a trip down memory lane with some of the most classic tracks from the series. The aim is to get gold awards in all the races in order to unlock new more difficult cups and secret content.
With a time trials mode (complete with the great ghost racer feature, and those impossibly hardcore developer ghosts racers) and versus mode, there’s also the cool battle mode and missions mode to round out the single-player fun. Battle mode sees the welcome comeback of balloon battle (each kart gets a total of five balloons, which are inflated by blowing into the DS’s microphone!), and the new shine runners mode where collecting the most shines determines the winner.
The missions mode offers up six levels of hardcore challenges, such as collecting a set number of coins or pulling of certain number of power-slide turbos on a lap. Achieving the highest ranking throughout this mode will truly test your Mario Kart mettle to the absolute max. It’s a great addition to the game and adds a definite “Nintendo-y” feel.

EppceteraInternHertzShadowFox08Holy. Legit shocked DKR is winning, and by so much, given mk64’s popularity DKR on 64 is easily in my top 3 64 games along with OoT and Perfect Dark. It truly is amazing. MK64 I’ll give for the better multiplayer experience. But DKR wins in everything else imo. 3 different vehicles to choose from, an actual single player adventure mode, track design, no rubber banding, music, and magic codes! DKR on DS was an abomination. Touchscreen and blowing for boosting were awful gimmicks, removing conker and banjo were bad, as well as replacing the voicework for the cast and having dialogue with the bosses in adventure absent. Also no silver coin chaklenges in adventure. i really want this game to come back remade with all the content from the original like the original cast, adventure mode, magic codes, etc. Having the added content from DS like characters (Kong sisters, Taj, Wizpig) and extra tracks are fine. Going back to Mario kart now. I find it extremely dissapointing that Mario kart hasn’t changed its formula at all. It excels at multiplayer experience, but it’s single player experience is such a slog. I can’t buy another Mario kart game that only has its single replay value bound to Grand Prix modes. So fucking boring! They need to branch out and try a story mode or something! 7 AnswersPress the back button, cant remember which one either left or right and it just does it It works best when you go round a corner. You press and hold down on the jump button so you’re drifting or whatever, and then you keep pressing the left and right direction buttons. When red flame things are coming out the back of the kart, let go of the right key at the back (the jump key) and you powerslide. You also get a quick speed boost. Hope this helps When you start to turn, press and hold the R button, while your grinding press left right left (still holding R), then let go of all the buttons and you should have the boost Well on Mariokart 64 You had to throw the stick left, then right, in a corner. If it’s a right corner, You get into the corner and throw the stick left, then right. If it’s a left corner, the opposite applies. The exhaust smoke should change colour. EDIT: Great answer there ballonhead. u skid and then press on the D pad the way u are turning and hold that and the sparks behind u should go blue then u can do a power slide! 😛 hope helps . u do something like my description, just press the skid buttons and the D pad till the sparks go blue. x hit R then turn (i suggest doing it on curves)then move the tires in the direction you want them then do right left right left or left right left right either way works well you press break (which is R) and then right, left, right, left like crazy! Please help me! Thanks! If you post a good answer, I’ll play with you on wifi if I get mario kart! Or I’ll do something if I get mario party. 10 AnswersI like Mario Kart better, it is alot of fun on the DS with the little stylus pen. I like playing Mario Party on the Wii, or the Gamecube. It is more interactive and easier to play with a group of people. Kart is more pickup and play friendly. Mario Party isn’t as much, I think of Mario Party more of a board game type with mini games mixed in. Mario Kart DS, It’s a lot more fun because it’s really interactive and gets your competitive side going. I love it! Get mario kart because u could play with other people. It is a good racing game! well, mario party got a better rating, and i think mario party is way better. but, mario kart is very fun and addicting, i have that and to be honest, i would get both Well I choose both! Heres my opinion on both: 1.Mario Kart DS:Very fun race tracks, cool items, fun if you play with other people and the missions are fun! 2.Mario party DS:TONS of fun! Also cool minigames, cool bosses, cool boards. I don’t know which one is better I love them both! This one is tough question I prefer which game you want to play Home » Guides » Mario Kart Tour: How to Drift and Snake Drifting is key to being successful in any Mario Kart game. This is especially true in Mario Kart Tour. When you successfully perform a drift, you’ll get a little boost. Those little boosts add up to more first-place finishes. Here’s how you can perform drifts in Mario Kart Tour. Drifting and Snaking in Mario Kart TourHow to Perform a DriftDrifting wasn’t a massively difficult task in past Mario Kart games. Yet, it was a crucial part of having a successful race. Mario Kart Tour makes this maneuver incredibly easy. First, you need to know how to steer. As you accelerate automatically, you can swipe left or right to move in the corresponding direction. If you hold after swiping left or right, then you’ll continue to turn in that direction. This is the beginning of the drift. Once you start to see sparks flying from your kart’s rear tires, you’re drifting. It’s the easiest drift in any Mario Kart game because it’s just built into regular turning. The new drift can take a little getting used to, but Mario Kart Tour’s simple mobile controls make it easy to master. There’s also manual drifting, which is just as easy but enables more drifting options. Manual drifting can be enabled via the in-game settings menu. Advantages of DriftingSure, drifting looks cool, but there are plenty of advantages to this move besides just the simple aesthetics. Drifts can make turning feel super smooth. If you can become a master of this maneuver, it’ll make going around turns feel like you’re driving on butter. Even though you’re essentially just sliding on your tires, you still have plenty of control to avoid crashes. Even better, when you successfully finish a drift, you’ll get a nice little boost that will help push you closer to that first-place finish. There are two levels of boost that you can get from drifting in Mario Kart Tour. There’s the mini boost, the super mini boost, and the ultra mini boost if you turn on manual drifting. When you start to see blue sparks coming out of your wheels, you’ll get a mini boost. Orange sparks are a sign that you’ll get a super mini boost after you stop drifting. Purple sparks that let you know you’re about to get the top level ultra mini boost. Pseudo-SnakingSnaking is a little trick that was discovered back in Mario Kart DS. This maneuver consists of chaining mini boosts together specifically on straightaways. This was a great way to get the upper hand on your opponents. This trick doesn’t exist in the same capacity in Mario Kart Tour, but the touch controls make it possible to chain drifts on straightaways. It’s not as fast as it was in Mario Kart DS, but it still gives you a massive advantage over the pack, so pseudo-snaking is a more appropriate term. You can only do this with manual drifting turned on. With all this information on Drifting and Snaking in Mario Kart Tour you should be an expert on sliding around that track. If you want to find more tracks to master with your new skills check out our guide on unlocking tracks in Mario Kart Tour. Two options, both are confusing.New Mario Kart game releases only come around so often, and each typically leads to celebration among Nintendo fans. This is the case once again with Mario Kart Tour, but the added fact that it’s the series’ first foray onto mobile phones makes for a unique situation. The gameplay has been totally reworked which makes for a new scenario where players aren’t sure of some of the basics of how to play. To help here’s a quick guide on how to steer in Mario Kart Tour. How to SteerWhile previous Mario Kart games used pretty typical controls, Mario Kart Tour changes things the most here. Players don’t have a controller firmly placed in their hands, so the game needs to do something else. Motion controls are one of the answers Nintendo came up with, leading to some confusion as players wrestle with how to steer and other issues. There are options though, so let’s break down all of it. The default option isn’t motion though, but some may want to change that later. By default the only way to steer in Mario Kart Tour is to tap and drag your finger which way you want to go. Each time you tap you’ll hop and start to drift a bit. Slide your finger/thumb to the left or right and your kart will head that way. You can let off your angle a bit, but cannot change directions without releasing your finger and tapping to drag once again. However, if you prefer motion controls just head into the Settings menu and change them, then keep reading to see how to steer with motion controls. In short, to steer in Mario Kart Tour using motion controls you simply move your device as though it was a steering wheel of sorts. Not all the way, don’t go tilting it 180 degrees or more, just tilt it left or right to steer left or right, respectively. It’s that simple. And that’s all you need to know about how to steer in Mario Kart Tour. Mario Kart Tour Grand Stars are your number one resource in DeNA’s mobile phone spinoff title. You’ll need to amass these to unlock new cups and tour gifts in-game, but you might not be sure how to earn them. That’s where we come in. We’re here to provide you with the lowdown on Grand Stars, including what you have to do to win them and what you can spend them on. Before diving headfirst into your first race, you’ll do well to read our Mario Kart Tour Grand Stars guide. Hop to it, racer. Mario Kart Tour Grand Stars | Race reward The first thing you’ll want to know about Mario Kart Tour Grand Stars is how you earn them. In truth, it couldn’t be simpler. You are given Grand Stars as a reward once you complete races. The amount of Grand Stars you’ll get is dependent on how well you perform during these races, too. You’ll earn points for where you finish, what character, kart, and glider you use, and any bonuses that you pick up during the race. These bonus points can range from stunts you perform as you go over ramps to how many times you boost and more. At the end of a race, your points are totaled up to give you a final score. Your final score will determine how many Grand Stars you get. For example, earning 1,300 points might net you one star, while more than 2,300 will get you five. Mario Kart Tour Grand Stars | What can I unlock with Grand Stars? Grand Stars enable you to purchase new cups, characters, and other tour gifts from the in-game shop. Unlocking cups will let you progress through a specific tour, new characters will give you a bigger roster to choose from, and tour gifts such as Rubies can let you play mini-games to earn other prizes. Your best bet, then, is to win as many races and accrue as many points as possible. Doing so will get you more stars quicker and let you earn rewards faster. So why not end a few more by trying to rank these games from worst to best. As is often the case with Pecking Orders, the idea here isn’t really to rank these games from worst to best, because even the ones down the bottom of the list are still loads of fun. It’s to pit these classic against one another, to see not just which one comes out on top, but why. I’m glad the staff didn’t put original too high. The series is largely one that gets better over time, once you put aside nostalgia. Edit: Added a poll. I had to make a decision to combine two games as only 7 options are allowed and decided to put SMK and Super Circuit together. Edit 2: Given the fact that Mario Kart 8 is already crushing everything else, I changed it so you can pick two games. It’s probably more interesting to see what game OTHER than Mario Kart 8 is everyone’s favorite. If you already voted, you can change your vote to pick two. Hello everyone! YoshiKart here! I’m sure you all know about Wiimmfi by now, a custom server that revives almost all aspects of the long gone Nintendo WFC Connection. One thing you may not know though, is that it also affects DS games! Wiimmfi also revives the online capabilities of several DS games, and while this usually requires patching a ROM and running through a flashcard/similar stuff, a newer, way easier method has just been found, no hacking required! This way, you can play DS games online again! Let’s jump in straight to the guide! -Your console (Nintendo DS family, DSi family, Nintendo 3DS family) -An internet connection/mobile hotspot with either WEP key or no password at all (*THIS IS IMPORTANT, IT WILL NOT WORK OTHERWISE!) -Mario Kart DS game cartridge *This is due to the Nintendo DS only supporting these types of connections at the time. Most modern modems/routers won’t be able to bring a DS game online. For this reason, I suggest you use a mobile hotspot with no password or a guest network, which has no password required to access. With that out of the way, let’s go! Step 1: Setting up your network First things first, you need to set up your connection for the game. If your modem/router has a Guest Network of sorts or an option to make the password type open (no password) or WEP, make sure to change it to that in your router’s settings, which are usually on a website. In this case I use my phone’s mobile hotspot. Make sure your internet is good enough for this kind of stuff too! 😛 Step 2: Connecting on your console Alright, now here comes the fun part! Turn on your Nintendo 3DS, and enter Mario Kart DS (or the game you want to play online on), and go to the wifi menu. Here, you should have an option to access the Nintendo WFC Settings, which will take you to the connection settings menu for the DS. Here, tap on the big blue button, and on any of the available spots that say “none”. Then, tap on the first option (Search for an access point) and wait for the console to look for networks. If your network you set up in step 1 is listed, tap it, do a connection test, and make sure it works! After that, go to it’s settings (the “none” button you tapped earlier should be “Ready” now) and look for the “Auto-Obtain DNS” setting. Disable it, and you should get the option to type in a Primary and Secondary DNS. Type these 2 addresses there: 8.8.8.8 (Secondary DNS) Save settings, do a connection test again if you want, and exit the menu to hop on back to the game. It’s possible that during this process you may encounter several errors. These are the ones I know of and encountered, and their solution. The console finds the access point, but fails to connect – This could be because of invalid settings in your network. Change some of them (depends differently on network) and try again. The access point requests a WEP key, I put it and the console tells me it’s invalid – That means the network’s key is actually not WEP. Be sure it is that or no password. My game either freezes or gives me error codes 61010 or 20110 while in the “Connecting to Nintendo WFC Screen” – This is an error you’re very likely to encounter, even after the solution I listed. However, you can prevent the game from freezing and reduce a lot the appearance of these errors by deleting all your friends off the friend list in the Records menu. This includes online and local friends, as they are saved when you have a match with them. If you keep encountering the codes after that, just keep trying. It might be your network too. I get error 85020 or 94020 when looking for players in any category – Either the MASTER server is down, which means you’ll have to wait it out, or your network is having issues, most likely the second one. I get error code 86420 – This means you need to enable DMZ on your network. This can be done following this video right here , but be sure to be on the Nintendo DS Connections screen, and not on the 3DSs! If you get any other error codes tell me so I can find a solution and add them, or if you manage to solve them as well tell me that too! Any help is appreciated ^-^ And that’s that! With the open network you set up, you can now hop on online on several DS games and play again like it’s 2007! :stuck_out_tongue_closed_eyes: Be aware that finding players can take a while, as not many people are frequently on the servers. You can use this page on the Wiimmfi website to see the games with active players at the moment, and see if you can land a match! Or, post your friend code so you always have people to play with! I hope this guide helps you, and brings more people to play MKDS and other DS games online! My friend code for this game is in my bio if you want to race 😉 That’s all from me, thanks for reading and i’ll see you all in the race track! The Nintendo Wii was a landmark console in video games, becoming one of the best-selling systems of all-time and releasing several titles that would be amongst the best video games ever made. It also allowed Nintendo fans to finally play their favorite games online with other players around the globe. Being able to play Mario Kart Wii and Super Smash Bros. Brawl with players from every corner of the world was a surreal experience (even if the lag made the experience less than stellar.) But all good things must come to an end, and on May 20th, 2014, the Nintendo Wi-Fi Connection servers were shut down, meaning those long-loved titles could only be enjoyed in an offline setting…right? Fortunately for us, an ongoing project has prepared for this shut down, and you can still play those classic games online like the old days with just a few simple steps. Read on to learn about Wiimmfi, the fanmade, free-to-use online server for the Nintendo Wii. What Is Wiimmfi? The Wiimmfi Project (often just called “Wiimmfi” for short) is a fanmade server that launched on May 10th, 2014 by a Mario Kart Wii player called “Wiimm.” Even before Nintendo announced that the servers would be shut down, Wiimm had been putting in research to gather data on how these games worked on servers in case the official Nintendo servers were closed, as has happened with various Xbox and PS2 games in the past. Because of the work Wiimm had done in the years prior, he was able to get the Wiimmfi Project up and ready before the Nintendo servers shut off on May 20th, 2014. Wiimmfi was originally focused solely on Mario Kart Wii, which continues to be the most popular game played on Wiimmfi by far, featuring hundreds of players at any given time of the day. Over the years, Wiimmfi added more and more games to its servers, including classics such as Super Smash Bros. Brawl and Mario Strikers Charged. Today, there are over 100 games that are playable using Wiimmfi, including Nintendo DS games such as Mario Kart DS and Diddy Kong Racing DS. Are There Any Differences Between Nintendo Wi-Fi And Wiimmfi?Gameplay wise, there are no differences between how any particular game played on Nintendo Wi-Fi versus how it plays on Wiimmfi, for better or for worse. A game that struggled with intense lag like Super Smash Bros. Brawl won’t play any better on Wiimmfi. On one hand, it adds to the authenticity of the experience, being able to play the games as they were. On the other hand, it means those frustrations from back in the day will still be there. Some games will have certain modes that won’t work anymore or will behave differently, but all in all, things seem to have carried over well. A full list of available games as well as how the online works can be found here. How Can I Start Playing On Wiimmfi? To play on Wiimmfi, you’ll need to install Homebrew, the Wii Channel that allows you to heavily mod your Wii. There are many great tools you can use to customize your Wii experience using Homebrew, and since the online servers no longer work, you don’t have to worry about Nintendo catching on to your tricks. You’ll also need an SD card with the Wiimmfi Patcher, which replaces the out-of-service Nintendo servers with the Wiimmfi ones. Once you load the patcher onto your SD card, insert it into the Wii and load up the patcher via the Homebrew channel. Load up whatever game you’d like to play and wait for the patch to complete, and you’re all set! (Note: more details can be found here.) It’s worth mentioning that anyone who only wants to play Super Smash Bros. Brawl can do so without the Homebrew channel; simply load up an SD card with a hackless pack, load up the game, go to the Stage Builder, and the game will reset with functioning Wiimmfi. Again, this only works for Super Smash Bros. Brawl; you’ll need Homebrew to play any other games. Where Do I Find People To Play Wiimmfi With?Mario Kart Wii is very active, meaning it shouldn’t be hard to find a race at any given time. Other games are quite sparsely populated, and you’ll have to do some searching to find active communities. Discords for those particular games are a good start, as well as their respective Reddits, but your best bet is to try your luck with Mario Kart Wii, or get some friends to set up Wiimmfi so you can play any game of your choosing. Wiimmfi is a wonderful case of when fans go the extra mile to make something special. Give it a shot and relive some of those classic Wii games as they always were. StopdoorSo I made some previous threads showing off some crazy multiplayer setups and being bored in the pandemic, thought I may as well share this new setup. I actually usually host with randoms so even as some things start to open up here, it still seems ill-advised to be hosting any sort of video game thing any time soon, which is a massive drag, but of course, that’s just how it is nowadays. Anyway, like I explained before, I bought this wild splitscreener device that lets me plug four things into a single 4K TV, and was enthralled with the possibilities of doing crazy splitscreen things like 4-player GBA games and 16-player Halo. Also an extremely tantalizing and more party-ready idea was getting four Switches together and pulling off some legendary games. So uh yeah, I did that, put together the setup right before the pandemic blew up and only got a single shot at trying it out with a group, but I guess hey, some day the time will be right again eh? Anyway, not going to lie, while I won one of the Switches as a prize, this setup wasn’t cheap – but I mean, people spend piles of money on silly things like traveling the world and thousand dollar PCs or whatever, but I’m pretty sure literally nobody is doing this, so whatever. Totally not justifying it to myself or anything. Haha. Ha. But yeah, here’s some pics. Only got a single shot of people actually playing the setup with Luigi’s Mansion 3, but it’s pretty rad. The 2-per-Switch 8-player is super convenient for this setup and the game even offers a button that lets you zoom in on the minimap, as if it was made for this squashed setup. The controls are pretty tough to explain to a group of noobs but I just get a kick out of how it’s 8-player co-op and really lets everyone work together. I didn’t have Splatoon in mind when originally setting this up, but then realized that the 4-player co-op Salmon Run was perfect for this setup. Didn’t get a chance to try it out but it’s wild to see. I wish I had a more exciting pic, but 4-player versus mode Mario Maker on a single screen brings a tear to my eye. I’m a big fan of the online versus in general and while it’s nice the game has single-screen options, they’re pretty compromised and nothing’s as goofy as the racing madness. I made a level that only really works right in wireless versus, but it turns out it’s fairly hard for people, lol. Super hyped to try this out again eventually. Minecraft and Rocket League are pretty fiddly to get to work because they really want persistent online connections and I swear you can only add in a second splitscreen player in wireless LAN in Rocket League through a UI glitch, but hey, it works. The UI is also super tiny and unideal, but what can you do, nice to have more variety with this whole setup at least, lol. I don’t think there’s pretty much any other third-party games that support splitscreen + LAN except maybe an indie game or two I haven’t taken the plunge on. 8-player splitscreen Mario Kart is a dream, eh? It works pretty well, the squashed screens aren’t even that bad for a game like this. I picked up a few wired LAN adaptors to possibly link up with anyone else reliable enough to bring another Switch or two to a meetup and boost this to the max 12 players, but relying on other people is the real dream, lol. It’s weird it needs to be wired for that many people, but I’m not complaining I guess that it’s possible at all. Some of these setups are pretty restrictive with controller options or have wireless interference if you try to push it, but I mean, I’ll take it. I also of course had to setup that weird tabletop gimmick mode in Super Mario Party, and then Clubhouse Games suddenly came out and made this whole setup seem even more worth it, lol. Still have to give this a try some time. Oh, and I guess I don’t have any pics of it but Pac-Man Vs. is also at least economical in letting me use a single copy and a guest edition together, lol. The novelty isn’t as amusing as Game Boy to GameCube, though. Anyway, not totally sure if I’d suggest this setup to anyone else because it’s not exactly cheap and super fiddly, but YOLO right? I have the collecting bug but I think it’s pretty satisfying to get real use out of collecting games in a practical, useable way rather than collecting boxes and displaying them on shelves. That’s me being a bit edgy with my opinionated takes though, lol. A shame the pandemic has defeated me along with all the extroverts pining for bars and concerts, haha. When it comes to mods for the Mario Kart series, what’s the first game that comes to mind? Either way, it appears that every Mario Kart modder is focused on maybe two games, with the others getting ignored and left behind. However, this isn’t the case. Nope, while Mario Kart Wii and 8 take the spotlight, it turns out Mario Kart DS has been getting its fair share of mods too. Like Mario Kart DS Deluxe, a title that tries to take tracks from future Mario Kart games and reimagine them in the Mario Kart DS engine. Here’s a video showing it in action: As you can tell, it certainly brings a wide array of tracks over from later games. You’ve got Moo Moo Meadows and Mushroom Gorge from Mario Kart Wii. Alpine Pass and Neo Bowser City from Mario Kart 7. Hell, you’ve even got a bunch of Mario Kart 8 tracks all simplified and toned down for the 3DS, including Bowser’s Castle and Cheese Land! It’s a pretty crazy selection, and when you then add tracks inspired by other games (like Resident Evil) to the mix, you’ve got a crazy selection you’d never expect in any Mario Kart game, let alone one on handheld. And it doesn’t seem like that’s all the mod provides either. No, it seems it’s switching up the characters too, with Sonic the Hedgehog and Crash Bandicoot (among others) making an appearance as playable characters. It’s all pretty neat if we do say so ourselves. What isn’t so neat however is the trailer itself. Unfortunately, said video doesn’t advertise the mod well at all, and due to both a lack of driving skill and the game’s rough edges, it makes it appear somewhat lacking compared to how it could be. It’s a shame really, especially given all the hard work put into the mod so far. At least if it was cut differently, the video could have avoided showing off things like Mushroom/Flower physics not working yet or certain backgrounds not being animated. Ah well, it’s still a mod with a lot of promise and (assuming it gets finished) will likely be one of the better Mario Kart DS hacks we’ve seen in a while. So if you’re still interested in the game (or want to see how Mario Kart 8’s tracks could have worked on the DS), check it out. It’s definitely got some serious potential! If you play Mario Kart Wii a lot, and frequently add people, there’s a problem you’re inevitably going to come across: Running out of space in your friend list. Only 30 slots for friends in the list is annoying, especially when you have so many contacts, and you frequently meet new people. You’re forced to remove others in favor of anothers. Not only that, having to add people mutually for the smallest of things like hosting a friend room also gets tiring. Not to worry though, because Wiimm created a genius feature for Mario Kart Wii to make friend managing much more convenient! That, is OpenHost! What is OpenHost? OpenHost is a little feature found out by Wiimm and Leseratte (creators of Wiimmfi) when messing around with the friend codes/list parts of Mario Kart Wii. It makes managing friend lists and rooms a lot more easier! When you have OpenHost, for people to enter your rooms and matches, only the person who wants to join must add you, no need to add them back! That way, you can keep people you play with often in your list while allowing just about anyone else to join you! It also has other features, that I will explain below once it’s set up! Without further ado, let’s do just that, in 3 simple steps! Step 1: Create a Wii-Homebrew forum account This is required, since that’s the only way you can login to the Wiimmfi page and configure OpenHost. Go to the Wii-homebrew forums (link below) and create an account there. It’s as simple as that! Step 2: Logging in the Wiimmfi website Now that your account is created, go to the Wiimmfi website (link below) and look for the login option. Input your username and password from the forums, and you should be logged in! Easier said than done :p Step 3: Enabling and configuring OpenHost Now this part may be tricky, so bear with me. Once you log in Wiimmfi, you should see a page like this. Find the option “Assign a console” and read what it says. Below, there should be a spot to type your friend code. Type in your friend code from the game, and as quick as that, OpenHost is enabled for you! Make sure you are logged into Wiimmfi in the game as well before doing this. After that, you should have an option that says “Manage OPENHOST”, go to it and you’re ready to start configuring! So, you have several options here, for how do you want OpenHost to work: -Disabled: This one’s self-explanatory, basically, leaves your codes the same, without any OpenHost stuff. -Black List: This is the most common setting to use for OH. It enables your friend code to be registered by as many people without you having to add them back. With this option, you can also prevent specific people from joining your rooms, using the “deny” feature. -White List: This is the second setting, more similar to the normal in game function. People need to be on the White List you make for them to access your friend rooms and stuff. You can also block people like with the Black List feature. Now for the secondary features that affect people who add you: -Deny: Codes that you add here mean that the users can neither see whether you are online or hosting a room at all. Basically a block feature 😛 -Friend: Again, works much like the normal friend list features; people added here can see when you are online and hosting a room as well. -Ignore: I don’t have much info on this feature, but it seems pretty pointless from what I understand, so don’t mind it. And there we go! Now you have OpenHost enabled on your profile! Believe me, this makes things a whole lot easier! There’s quite the difference between having OpenHost and not having it! 😛 I hope this guide helped you! Be on the lookout for more content on the future! For now, see you all on the racetrack! Basically a Lua Script that turns drifting on it’s head entirely, changing it to the system from Mario Kart DS! To build up Miniturbo’s with this type of drifting is pretty simple, all you have to do is drift outwards, then drift inwards in quick succession to build up your Miniturbo! This can be done multiple times on a straight line too, so you can gain speed extremely quick with successful drifts. (Also known as Snaking) This also includes an alternate mode where it’s more akin to Mario Kart Double Dash, requiring 2 Left/Right inputs to get a blue Miniturbo. You can alternate between Drift modes using the command “kartsnaking”, 0 turns it off, 1 is Mario Kart DS mode and 2 is Mario Kart Double Dash mode. When you change it it’ll update on Map Change. v1.1

I. don’t even remember the last time we got a submission that was a .lua file instead of at least being in a .wad, but if the attachment system allows it, I suppose it’s OK. It’s actually a shame to me that this mod works, because it feels utterly disgusting playing this way. I never wanted to go back to the days of waggling the stick back and forth on every damn turn, and needing to do so because of how far more efficient it is than actually driving. Flying right into the face of stat balance too; did you know in SRB2 Kart, heavier characters charge their boosts faster? Well, its all rendered moot by this system. Now, I’ll still pass it to releases, but like with that hopping mod. Ugh. Karma: 5284 So you can’t seem to win in Mario Kart Tour? Whether it’s your first game in the Mario Kart series or not, Mario Kart Tour can be challenging, especially when you don’t know the tracks. Instead of struggling your way through the cups, try out these five tips to get a leg up. At the end of the day, Mario Kart Tour is just another game in the Mario Kart series. While Nintendo did make some questionable changes to help new players, they also gave us settings to change for a more authentic experience — as well as gaining an advantage. By changing a few options and knowing a few tricks of the trade, you can start crushing the competition. Trick #1: Collect CoinsCoins are really important in Mario Kart Tour. First, they act as currency to purchase items like new karts, gliders, and upgrades for different drivers. Besides the “Coin Rush” mode (which requires Emeralds, a different currency that is purchased through micro-transactions), the only way to collect coins is while racing. But there’s another purpose to coins: they boost your speed. That’s right, collecting coins will actually increase your top speed. The maximum amount of coins you can collect while still receiving this effect is ten, so making sure you have at least ten coins each race can be crucial. However, we recommend you collect at least 13 coins. You lose three coins each time an item hits you, so this gives you a chance to recollect another three-coin cushion so you never lose the speed boost.
Trick #2: Use SlipstreamSlipstream is what Mario Kart calls drafting, a technique where drivers get a speed boost by riding in another driver’s wake. Imagine you are on the last lap. You and the first place opponent are trading positions. Instead of going back and forth, you can ride behind him and you’ll get a boost that can slingshot you into first right at the finish line. Check out our guide below to learn more about slipstream. Trick #3: Manually Drift Through CornersMario Kart Tour makes drifting very easy compared to the console versions. By simply swiping left or right and holding your finger long enough, you will begin to drift. Sparks will appear around your wheels to indicate you’ve acquired a small speed boost from drifting, which you can then activate by releasing your finger. While the simplicity of this technique is helpful, there is a better way: Manual drift. This requires you to do a bit more work to drift, but gives you an added bonus: Ultra mini-turbo. Ultra mini-turbo is the highest speed boost you can get for drifting, and it’s a huge advantage when performed correctly. Check out our guide to how to turn on this feature on and to perform it.
Trick #4: Hold onto ItemsIn Mario Kart Tour, some items are triggered automatically. If you have any items when you hit an item box, if you have any items, the game automatically efires the old items off randomly. This might help new players, but it hurts experienced players. As anyone who’s played a Mario Kart game knows, the lower your track position, the better items you get. Some items, such as the Mega Mushroom, Lightning, and Spiny Shell, are only really possible to obtain while in last place or second to last. So if you’re running behind, automatically triggered items are usually detrimental. The same can be said if you’re in first place and holding a shell behind you to thwart attacks from other drivers — if you hit an item box and get nothing but coins, you’re now unprotected. To turn this off, head to the main page and select “Menu,” “then “Settings.” Scroll down and find the checkbox for triggering items automatically. Turn this feature off and you can keep your items and use those rarer items later in the race for the easy win.
Trick #5: Learn the Tracks & Shortcuts (Practice Makes Perfect)As the saying goes, “Practice makes perfect.” It is a pretty obvious tip; one that many seem to overlook. But how you practice matters. Don’t just practice on 50 cc and think you’ll get better. Play on the more difficult tracks to learn their layouts. Try out different characters, karts, and upgrades to see which combination allows you to minimize your loss of speed and maintain a top position. Get a sense of where the item boxes are, where coins are scattered, and look for shortcuts. Mario Kart is notorious for shortcuts that can dramatically change how the track is played, so look out for them! Keep Your Connection Secure Without a Monthly Bill.
