Android’s notification system is easily one of its most powerful features. But with great power comes great responsibility, and some apps choose to abuse this. If you’re sick of constant notifications from specific apps, here’s how to completely disable them.

Ideally, you’d turn off notifications through the offending app’s settings. Don’t want Facebook bombarding you with notifications? Head to the Facebook app, open its settings, and turn notifications off. That’s the best way to do things.

But some apps are big jerks, and don’t have options to turn off notifications. In those cases, you can go a more nuclear route and block that app from sending notifications altogether, thanks to a setting within Android. That’s what we’re going to talk about today.

Before we get started, it’s worth pointing out that disabling notifications can vary greatly depending on what device and Android build you’re currently using. We’re going to focus on Lollipop (Android 5.x) and Marshmallow (Android 6.x) in this post—if you’re already running Nougat, we also have directions on how to extensively control notifications here.

With that, let’s dig in, starting with Lollipop.

How to Disable Notifications in Android Lollipop

While Lollipop is a few years old at this point, it’s still the most popular Android build running in the wild—as of September 2016, it’s still active on roughly a quarter of all Android handsets. Given how many Android devices are out there, that’s quite a large number.

The good news is that disabling app notifications on Lollipop is incredibly simple—all it takes is a few taps.

The first thing you’ll need to do is head into the Settings menu. Give the notification shade a tug, then tap the cog icon. On devices running stock Android builds, you’ll need to pull the shade twice before the cog shows up.

In the Settings menu, head down to “Apps.” On some devices, the name may vary—it’s titled “Applications” on Samsung devices, for example. Either way, that’s what you’re looking for.

Now, here’s where things can get a bit tricky. On stock devices, this will open a menu with a full list of all installed applications, which is what you’re looking for. On Samsung devices, however, you’ll first need to tap the “Application Manager” option before seeing this list. If you’re using a different manufacturer’s handset, you may need to dig around a bit to find the correct option, but you’ll know you’re there when you see all of your install apps. From here, all devices should be the same.

In this list, scroll until you find the problem app, then tap on it. There will be a little checkbox titled “Show notifications,” that’s your setting—give it a tap to turn off all notifications from that particular app.

A warning dialog will then pop up, letting you know that you could “miss important alerts and updates” if you disable notifications. If you’re still not scared, go ahead and tap “OK.”

Boom, you’re done. Simple, right? Yep. You can also turn notifications back on but repeating this process—you know, in case you start missing the extra attention.

How to Disable Notifications in Android Marshmallow

Marshmallow has more notification options, but the first part of the process is still the exact same: pull down the shade, tap the cog, and jump into Apps. Again, other devices may have a different name here, like Applications.

Again, if you don’t see the full app list here, you may need to enter another menu—Samsung devices have a specific entry for “Application Manager.”

Once in the appropriate menu, find the problem app, then tap on it. This is where things differ from Lollipop.

Down this menu, there’s an entry that reads “Notifications.” Tap that.

You can also block notifications from the shade itself. If you see a notification from an app you want to block, just long-press the notification. On Samsung devices, this will take you straight to the app’s notification settings. On stock Android devices, the notification will change color and a little “info” button will show up on the right side. Just tap that to go straight to the app’s notifications settings.

Now you have options! To disable notifications completely, just toggle the “Block All” option. This options is actually called “Allow notifications” on Samsung devices and is toggled on by default (to allow notifications). To disallow notifications, just turn this option off.

Once you’ve toggled the appropriate entry, you’re done. Say goodbye to annoying notifications!

The settings for your Apps will be open up in the new window, where it will be displaying the memory used and a stop button too. Below the Stop button a setting will be there like “Show Notifications” which is ticked by default. To disable the unnecessary notifications, we need to uncheck this settings.

After unchecking the settings, close the App Manager and we can go to home menu. The App will not alert you in the notification panel further. You can also uninstall the App from the App Manager settings screen using the Stop and Uninstall buttons.

For some apps it is also possible to shutdown the app temporarily, if you do not want to use the app for some period. For such apps, you can see a Turn OFF button in the App Manager. Tap on the Turn-OFF button in the App Manager for corresponding apps, the app will be shut down until you are again Turning ON or till next reboot of your device.

It is very useful to get rid of the unwanted notifications from the Apps like Games. Remember that, Unchecking the notification settings will only disable the notifications coming from these apps in the notification panel, where as the apps will function as normal. The social Apps will function as normal even you are disabling this notification feature so that you will have open the App to see the new updates.

Some deep integrated apps like ChatON in Samsung devices may still be able to pop up the instant messages even you are disabling the notifications in notification panel. For such Apps, you need to shut down the App from the App Manager, to completely avoid the notifications from it.

Phone notifications are often useful, and occasionally an annoyance. They can interrupt us with information we hardly need, adding just a bit more clutter to our already harried lives.

Luckily, If you use an Android phone or tablet, you can turn off your notifications at any time and reclaim a bit of peace and quiet.

How to turn off notifications on an Android device

To turn off notifications on your Android device on a one-off basis, follow these steps:

1. Launch the Settings app, then tap “Notifications.”

2. You’ll be shown a list of apps. Toggle the switch beside any app for which you want notifications turned off, so it turns gray.

3. If you want to customize how a specific app shows notifications — in other words, whether it plays sound, shows a notification badge, and more — instead of turning it off, tap “Advanced” at the top of the notifications screen, then tap the app that you want to customize. You’ll be able to customize the app’s notifications on the screen that appears.

To turn off all notifications, you can either turn off every app’s notifications manually, or use Do Not Disturb mode.

Do Not Disturb mode will mute all notifications except for your own alarms and timers. Note, however, that this also means that no one will be able to call you.

To turn on Do Not Disturb, open the Settings app, then tap “Sounds and vibration,” and then toggle on “Do not disturb.”

How to disable weather notifications?

Open the Google app on your smartphone and tap on the ‘3-dot‘ icon in the bottom right corner of your screen.

Now tap on ‘Settings‘.

Select ‘Google Assistant‘ to access your Google Assistant settings.

Now tap on ‘Assistant‘ to access the assistant tab at the top of your screen.

Tap on ‘Routines‘ to access the routines set on your smartphone by default thanks to Google.

If you have not added extra routines to your assistant, then you should have 6 different routines by default. Tap on each one of them and uncheck the box for ‘Tell me about the weather‘.

Once done, tap on ‘Save‘ in the top right corner of your screen for each routine to save the recently made changes.

Once you are done, simply exit the Google app and you should now stop receiving notifications about weather from the Google app regularly.

Note: While this may stop regular notifications from your Google Assistant, it won’t stop any additional notifications being sent by a 3rd party weather app or the default weather application bundled with your smartphone by your manufacturer. If you wish to disable these notifications, follow the guide listed below.

Open the Settings app on your smartphone and tap on ‘Apps & Notifications‘.

Note: Depending on your smartphone manufacturer, this option could also be called ‘Manage Apps‘, ‘Installed apps‘, or ‘Third Party apps‘.

Tap on ‘See all “x” apps‘ where “X” is the number of total apps installed on your smartphone.

You will now be shown a list of all the apps on your phone. Scroll and find your weather app in the list and tap on it to view its settings.

Now tap on ‘Notifications‘ and you will be shown all the notifications that your weather app is allowed to send to you.

Tap and toggle off the notifications that you do not wish to receive.

Now close the settings app and the unwanted notifications from your 3rd party weather app should now stop showing up in your notification shade.

Open the Google News application on the Android device, tap on the profile icon in the top right corner, select Settings and tap on Notifications on the Settings page that opens.

The page displays a variety of options to customize the application’s notification capabilities. You can toggle “get notifications” to turn off all notifications or customize the following options instead:

• Change the notification frequency from standard to low or high.
• Enable or disable breaking news, headlines, featured content, daily briefing, your interests, sharing, promotions and offers, and new magazine notifications individually.

The second option that you have to deal with Google News notifications is to configure access to Android’s notifications system for the app.

Long-tap on the notification to get started. This should display an option to toggle notifications for the app right there.

You could also tap on “all categories” to open the configuration page in the Settings. There you can toggle notifications off completely or only different types of notifications.

If you use Google News but don’t want notifications, then you may want to disable or customize the notifications in the application’s settings instead of using Android’s options. You could configure both as well to make sure that nothing slips by.

Step-3

• After going into the Applications Manager. You will see app the apps that are on your phone. There are three columns. Swipe to the All apps column.

Step-4

• In the All apps column, scroll down and find the Google Play Games and open it.

Step-5

• You will find the small show notifications options under the Force Stop option box. Disable the show notifications option by tapping on the box present near to it. A dialogue box will appear thence, just tap on OK.
