How to Decorate a Diary. There are as many ways to decorate a diary. Your options are only limited to your imagination. Follow these tips or mix and match a few of them to create a diary that is completely your own.

Hi again! Today I’m going to show you how to make a diary (well, not make, just decorate!) If you want to keep a diary that looks really good, but hate the diaries and journals in stores, then this post is for you! You can either take ideas from my post, or you can look at “The Girls Book of Secrets: Shh, don’t tell. ” written by Gemma Reece, which you should be able to look at on Amazon, as they will have the preview. I used that idea to decorate my diary, but I thought that I probably shouldn’t post that same idea on my blog because of copyright issues 🙂

Idea #1: Cover it with denim

What you’ll need:

1. Denim (either from your old jeans/jacket or from a store.) If you’re using your old jeans/jacket, you might want to cut out the pocket as well.

2. A notebook/sketchbook (Non-spiral would be better, or you might have to leave a small part of your diary uncovered)

4. Glitter, sequins, anything you’d like to decorate

For non-spiral notebooks:

1. Find out how much denim you’ll need to cover the whole notebook, but make the rectangle about 5 inches bigger.

2. Cover your notebook with glue.

3. Stick the denim on, then using more glue, wrap the edges around the edges of the inside cover. It’s sort of like using wrapping paper and wrapping the notebook.

4. If you have the pocket, glue the pocket onto the front cover of your notebook. If there’s only one layer of fabric for the pocket, DO NOT glue the entire thing on. If you leave some space between the middle of the pocket and the notebook, you can use it to store your pens.

5. Use whatever you have to decorate the denim, like applying glitter glue in a pretty pattern to the pocket (if there’s one), writing “MY DIARY” on the cover, or just drawing a picture on the denim in metallic colors. WARNING: Writing “My Diary” or “Sweet Secrets” on the cover will attract more attention to the fact that it’s your DIARY. People may try to read it. If you would like tips on how to avoid people reading your diary, check my next post on how to make people not read your diary.

For spiral notebooks:

Do the same thing, but don’t cover the spiral rings (Doing so may make it harder to open/close your diary.

Idea #2: Collage the Cover

Sorry, I don’t have a photo for this one, as I lost the diary that I made with a collaged cover.

What you’ll need:

A notebook/sketchbook that DOES NOT have a spiral bind

At least 20 pictures

A sheet of paper

Markers/ colored pencils

1. Take your photos and cut them out. (For a really great look, cut them out with a little bit of a border, and then rip the edges so that they look old and slightly wonky)

2. Figure out how you want them to be collaged.

3. Glue the pictures into place on the sheet of paper. (It does not matter if there are several spots where the paper shows)

4. Take your markers/colored pencils and color the places where the paper shows.

5. Glue the piece of paper onto the notebook and trim the edges if they overlap.

TIP: If you would like your notebook to last even longer, cover your notebook with plastic wrap. No, not the kind you have in the kitchen, but the kind people wrap onto their textbooks to protect the covers.

Idea #3: Wrap it with wrapping paper or felt

What you’ll need:

A sheet of wrapping paper or felt

A notebook/sketchbook (Preferably not the spiral kind. If you do decide to use the spiral kind, don’t cover the rings, or it might be harder to open)

1. Cut your wrapping paper/ felt, but make the rectangle 5 inches bigger than the cover of your diary.

2. Cover the notebook with glue and then wrap the notebook/sketchbook.

What you’ll need:

A sheet of paper

Markers/ colored pencils

1. Doodle on the sheet of paper. Draw whatever you want!

2. Cover your notebook with glue, and then wrap the notebook with the sheet of paper.

Alternatively, you could doodle right on the notebook cover, if its in a light, plain color, just make sure to use permanent marker, or wrap it with plastic book wrap. You might want to wrap it with plastic book wrap even if you’re sticking the sheet of paper onto the notebook.

Option #5: Stickers

What you’ll need:

Lots and lots of stickers

A notebook/sketchbook (preferably non spiral but spiral works just as well)

Varnish/ Plastic book wrap (optional but recommended)

1. Cover your notebook with stickers!

2. Either varnish your notebook or cover it with plastic book wrap! Optional but recommended.)

Well that’s all! I have a tip for all of these except the denim/ felt ideas which is: Cover them with plastic book wrap or varnish- but plastic book wrap is better. I hope that you liked these ideas and that you might use those to decorate YOUR diary! CU later and part two’s coming up soon!

  How to Decorate Your Diary Cover

  STEP 1:- Making texture for the diary cover

  • Take a plain diary
  • Take the POP and Fevicol MR in a plastic bowl and mix them together
  • Take the diary and create bark like texture on it with POP using candy sticks. Let it dry

  STEP 2:- Painting the texture of the diary cover

  • Paint the textured diary with shades of brown using Acrylic Colours Burnt Sienna 01, Black 02, Chrome Yellow 03 and Dark Brown 05
  • Let it dry

  STEP 3:- Painting the message on the diary cover

  • Take an A4 card paper, paint the paper with water shading technique using Acrylic colour Yellow Ochre 26. Leave it to dry
  • Draw the word “another adventure begins” on the card paper individually in small sized rectangles. Then paint each letter with Acrylic Colours Burnt Sienna 01, Dark Green 06, Pink 18, Violet 25, Yellow Ochre 26 and Teal Blue 68
  • Cut along the outlines of the rectangles neatly
  • Take the textured diary and stick the cut letters on the right above corner of the diary with Fabric Glue.

  STEP 4:- Assembly and finishing

  • Similarly draw and cut small and big sized machine gears from painted papers
  • Take the nut bolts and paint it with Acrylic Colour Pearl Metallic Bronze 355. Let it dry
  • Arrange and stick the jute lace, the various buttons with prints like Clock, Butterfly Shaped, Floral Designs, Gramophone Shaped, painted nut bolts and the cut out of the machine gears aesthetically on the diary with Fabric Glue. Leave it to dry completely.

  I want to start writing in a diary but I don’t know what type of copy to use and how I could decorate it (I know it sounds stupid, but I want it to look really pretty)

  ok i’m not excatly sure what you are looking for but i can tell you some cute ways to decorate it

  1) cover it with a cute color paper or fabric, and decorate that with drawings or other things or use fabric pens/paint

  2) rip up a few sheets of different colored papers and glue the pieces to the cover to cover the whole thing, from there you can do even more to decorate it like draw on it

  3) stickers are always a fun option!

  4) you can sort of make your own stickers if you just cut out shapes you like from paper and glue them on

  5) and my personal favorite. make a collage! i have done this many times. you can take pictures you have of you/friends/family/pets and cut them and arrange them on the cover OR print pictures and cute them out of magazines of cute things you like or that seem like your personality

  if i think of any more i will edit. hope you have fun!

  You can simply keep it and stick / put inside your diary book. The TWG card I got it when I first visit their shop , then you know I didn’t really love fragrance but I love the one called chanel chances in pink or purple I forgot. Then I kept this tester card inside on my diary book on a special page too.This is what I usually do in my previous diary book because I REALLY VERY CACAT IN DRAWING one.

  As you probably know, I like to keep my diary colourful but functional and I have noticed that quite a few others seem to share this mindset. I know that others prefer to keep their diary simple without all the frills others would add, but I guess that’s down to personal taste and preference. For me, however, I would like to look back at a certain year’s worth of diary inserts and leaf through it as if it were a mini-journal too.

  Anyway, I thought I would do a post on how I decorate my diary sheets and also the inspiration behind some of the ways I use colour and stickers to maintain a functional planner, but also keep my inserts as a sort-of ‘mini-journal’.

  Firstly, sticky notes. I find these very useful for when a large chunk of information has to be highlighted. Often, I use them for lists (such as a shopping list) or for other bits of important information (such as train times).

  I find that using a sticky note enables this chunk of text to jump out easily but it also ensures that there is a way to ‘separate’ that information from other bits of my daily planning. Also, sticky notes can look pretty too!

  Next, colour! Colour is fantastic to ensure the continual use of my planner. This might not be the case for everyone, but it definitely is for me. I’ve always enjoyed being creative (I first used Photoshop when I was fourteen!) and I guess that never went away.

  There are various ways to use colour – by using different colours to write different things, highlighting, underlining, drawing shapes, etc.

  Now, onto stickers. I use a variety – from plain to animal faces to Rilakkuma ones. I use them to highlight something important, or just to decorate the pages – there are many reasons as to why I use them. They also add colour which is a big thing for me. In school, I was a very visual learner and colour helped, and I guess that transferred over to my day-to-day planning too.

  I like to try and use stickers in a creative way too – as you can see below.

  I used Martha Stewart x Avery teardrop stickers and cut each in half and made a pattern with them. I loved how the green and the blue complemented each other and I used this as a way to keep track of TV shows I was watching instead of the usual just-write-it-on-plainly method!

  Another thing I use is washi tape to highlight things. Although I mentioned the use of highlighters earlier, I personally prefer to use washi tape as I didn’t like how highlighters bled on the Filofax paper. However, now that I am in Smythson inserts, this is less of an issue but I’ve always found highlighters to be quite messy and I can’t say I am a big fan of them in my planner.

  I highlight various things – if a day is boring, I might highlight a TV show to watch, or if an important event was to occur, that might be highlighted too. I like using washi tape on washi tape too:

  Finally, I like to mix up the ‘font’ I use for things. This adds to the journalling aspect and I like using ‘bubble’ writing, or very thin writing to add that extra bit of ‘art’ to my pages.

  One last thing (I promise this is the last one!) is that sometimes, I add in some illustration of some kind to denote an event. An example of this is on a day when it snowed!

  I rarely illustrate properly though, and prefer to use my Rilakkuma stamp set instead (not only are they cuter, they are also a quick and easy way to decorate my pages). Alternatively, if I find something cute in a magazine, in a department store (such as a perfume card), I would stick that on to decorate a boring day. Sometimes, I even stick train tickets on a day that I travelled somewhere interesting too.

  I hope you’ve enjoyed a brief glimpse into how and why I decorate my diary pages. If you still hadn’t figured it out, it’s because:

  Organizing and decorating a planner can be one of my favorite things to do. Organizing by color, name, and event, can be really satisfying to do but also the relief you feel after is a godsend. Having an organized planner can leave you feeling like you have a much more organized and beautiful mind. From grocery lists to your daily goals we’re here to tell you how you can organize and decorate your planner to your heart’s content.

  1. Choose a planner that fits your needs

  Start with a blank page, or choose a planner that has sections clearly marked for you. There are hundreds of variations, from daily planners to weekly, monthly and yearly options. So it depends just how creative you want to get!

  2. Color code

  Use color coding to help you organize your daily and monthly schedules. But also the use of the color will help to decorate and make your planner look pretty. Try using softer highlighters in pastel tones to make your planner less offensive than the typical neon yellows. You can also use different color page flags which direct you to certain key points and emphasize the need of certain topics. Color coding can help to organize conflicting work and leisure activities, making your planner much more visually effective.

  Grab some stickers to help motivate you to stay on task. If you are having a bad day or you are suddenly hit with the urge to procrastinate. You can look down and stay motivated to stay on task.   To make sure you are on track in your planner, use helpful accessories such as clip on’s and bookmarks. You can get some really beautiful accessories for your planner. Beautiful bookmarks will help you to instantly flick to just the right page. Printed tapes to help border all your points.

  Go online and find some really cute small inserts to print off, or purchase some with the ring holes punched already. You can add them in per week, day or month in your planner, depending on what you want to write on them. I use my inserts to keep track of my weekly groceries. I write down everything I need, from hummus to carrots and have the list always at hand in my planner. However, you can use these inserts to make note of daily goals, calls to make, priority lists or simply to divide your planner up.

  Create a weekly to do list

  Pillows be it bed pillows or floor pillows play an important role in your comfort and the beauty of your home.

  They are useful for supporting the body when you are sleeping or sitting upright.

  There are different types of pillows in the market with the most common ones being those that form part of your bedding.

  The pillows that are used as a form of bedding is used in supporting the neck and head during sleep.

  There are other forms of decorative pillows like throw pillows, poufs among others.

  These can be used in supporting the back when one is sitting on couches or chairs.

  Pillows are usually made up of filling material that is hemmed in a cover made out of fabric.

  These covers that are made of cloth are usually known as a pillow cover or a pillow slip.

  Over time, the pillow covers or slips have evolved into decorative ones that are called pillow shams.

  What are pillow shams?

  A pillow sham loosely means a pillow with a false front, learn more.

  This was coined in the 1700s to refer to these decorative pillows that were made with removable pillowcases.

  Pillowcases and pillow shams have a similar look but pillowcases are normally used to cover the pillows that are used for actual sleeping while pillow shams are used more for their decorative purposes.

  A standard pillowcase usually has one side open all the time through which the pillow is inserted into the cover.

  A pillow sham, on the other hand, has both sides closed while having a slit at the back through which the pillow is inserted.

  Shams are made for decorative purposes.

  Because of this, they are not made for sleeping on and therefore have to be removed when one is sleeping.

  How do we decorate the bed?

  Since we spend about a third of our day in bed, we ought to invest not only in the functional aspect of the bedding but also on the beauty of the bedroom.

  Some people like to sit up in daybed while watching the television or reading a book.

  The bed, therefore, needs to be an inviting place.

  Many people use throw pillows and pillow shams to decorate the bed and make it an inviting place.

  These can be made in different colors and designs to match with the color themes of the room and the beddings.

  Most pillow shams are made to match the duvet, bed-covers or bed-sheets.

  Some pillow shams can have simple knife-edge, cording, fringes or a flange to make it decorative.

  The use of the pillow shams brings in not only different colors but also the texture.

  To achieve an interesting look at your bed, you may want to consider mixing up your pillow shams using different colors and designs that depict the seasons.

  These changes of colors and designs will keep your bedroom looking interesting all year round.

  In case you are using an odd number of shams in decorating your bed, like three shams, you can have the middle sham in a different color from the other two.

  As you continue with your decoration, it is important to understand that shams come in different shapes and sizes.

  While most shams come in the standard pillow sizes, there are three common sizes of shams which are the standard sham, the king sham, and the Euro sham.

  The king sham is the largest and is rectangular, the standard sham is also rectangular but smaller than the king sham while the Euro sham is square.

  There are other sizes of shams like the boudoir that is much smaller than the standard pillow.

  These different sizes have different ways of being arranged to achieve the desired look.

  As for the pillows used for sleeping, they are arranged behind the sham pillows.

  When decorating with the pillow shams, it is important to have a variety of colors, textures, sizes, and designs to have the desired decorative effect.

  You need to explore the different designs and colors that are available in the market to decorate the bed and keep changing.

  Also, for the desired change, you might need to invest in adding a few more pillows for a fuller effect in the bed.

  Most duvets and duvet covers come with their matching sham pillowcases that would make it easier in the matching.

  You may also explore investing in the bed sheets that come with matching pillowcases to set a theme for your bedroom.

  A general rule is to consider the style and size of the bed when choosing the sham pillows that you need to use for your bed.

  How do you arrange the sham pillows?

  A general method of arranging the sham pillows is, to begin with, the normal sleeping pillows resting against the headboard.

  These are followed by the king sham pillows then you can arrange the standard sham pillows.

  The Euro pillows are then added as a layer after the standard pillows.

  You can also use the boudoir sham pillows to create more variety.

  Since sham pillows are used for their decorative purposes, they need to be full and fluffy to be able to stand upright on the bed.

  You can add or reduce the number of pillows depending on your needs and the size of your bed.

  Can I sleep on a pillow sham?

  Well, yes you can technically sleep on your pillow sham although that is not its primary purpose.

  They are designed for their decorative purposes but can also take the functional purpose of a pillow cover.

  For most people, the sham pillows can be used to prop up while sitting on the bed reading or watching the television.

  As a fact, some of the fabrics that are used in the making of sham pillows may be too coarse and both thus making them rather uncomfortable to sleep in.

  For the sake of longevity, it would be good if you would save the pillows for their decorative purposes and not for sleeping.

  The covers can always be changed for variety.

  I have spent hours watching the various videos in YouTube that teaches on decorating one’s planner.

  If you plan to decorate your planner, it can really take up heaps of your time- but the end result would give you the inspiration to plan and then check on the planner each time. Checking on the planner and updating it determines whether you can successfully use and stick to a planner.

  She also adopt bullet journalling- I use a similar method when making notes of changes and implementation to my blogs (to keep track of changes, enhancements, experiments and strategies) even though I did not get round to indexing the pages.

  I love looking at the decoration in her planners. She is very practical such as saying that you don’t need to spend a lot of money to customize the covers.

  She also shared with what items that you do not need based on the mistakes she has made. Some are a lot of notepads and sticky notes (she learnt after having a drawerful of sticky notes and notepads- but her sticky notes are really beautiful). She also did not colour co-ordinating her posts- because honestly, I also bought a lot of pens thinking to colour coordinate but find it real troublesome.

  In the end, I am referring to useful notes that I jot down in my books.

  Seventeen Channel

  I just discovered this channel and like the detailed way she present her videos and the rich array of information and tips that she provides. The above video she addressed the challenges of bullet journalling by using the new products that has now consists of a hybrid between a planner and bullet journalling.

  Since moving to Austin and transitioning out of the college way of living I’ve lived the past many years, it is time to finally start investing in pieces that make my new home, home.

  By all means, I want every piece to be picked out perfectly and match my neutral aesthetics. I have always envisioned my next home or apartment to have an all-white theme with black accents everywhere. From the cupboard handles to the straws that I sip my coffee out of in the morning.

  I envision it to hopefully have large windows that I can enjoy my morning brew and sunshine in a clear cup before conquering my day. It’s the little things that count right?

  As I start to transition my home aesthetic to really feel like home, and not just a place to live for a short amount of time, there are a few things that have caught my eye — cue Amazon hype.

  My Amazon cart has been filled, filled more, and then topped off with even more. If you’re also looking for some staple (& inexpensive) pieces to add simple touches to your home during this time, oh do I have a couple of ideas for you!

  Water Holder — I can SO imagine having this on the table filled with ice-cold water for all my dinner guests (when we can have them again).

  Mason jar holders — I mainly thought of these to holder my powder creamer and inulin I like to put in my coffee in the mornings.

  Glasses — of course, you need these for every occasion.

  White dishes — I thought these were cute, simple, and perfect for the theme that I have planned out.

  Cocktail kit — oh my gosh, how I want to be a barista with a full liquor bar filled with gin and red wine.

  Coffee/cocktail bar — I thought this roll-out bar would be perfect for that ^^ occasion. Maybe even add a coffee machine on top of it?

  Black coffee straws — I absolutely love these because they are small for all my short coffee cups.

  Clear coffee cups — honestly, I have been seeing these everywhere and I am obsessed.

  Modern wine glasses — I have also been seeing these everywhere and loving them. Definitely a simple spin on a regular wine glass.

  Have you seen our Paper Book for Food Lovers yet? In this special edition of the Flow Book for Paper Lovers you will find patterned templates that you can use to decorate a cake, among others. Here’s how you do it.

  It actually speaks for itself. In the book you will find two different templates to tear or cut out: one with a pattern of stars and one with a pattern of tree leaves.

  1. Choose the pattern you want on your cake (or whatever other edible item you wish to decorate) and tear it out. We went for stars here.
  2. Pop the stars out of the template by hand. You won’t need these stars anymore for the cake, but you can always use them for another project, so keep them somewhere safe.
  3. Place the template over the cake.
  4. Sprinkle whatever ingredient you want your stars to be (e.g. icing sugar, rainbow sprinkles, etc.) over the template. With fine items like icing sugar, you can do it by hand or through a sieve.
  5. Now remove the template.
  6. Done!

  There is something about writing in a journal or sketch book everyday. Maybe it’s the fact that you document little tid bits of your day, a memory of something or sketches of things you love. I remember when I was a little girl I had a diary with a key. I loved that thing SO much until one day I went to write in it and could not find the key. I guess I was so paranoid that someone would read what I wrote that I hid the key in a spot that I couldn’t even remember! I think that was an early detection that I had ADD. I wish I still had that diary…

  Today I will show you how to decorate a Sketchbook to reflect who you are! It’s super fun and every time you look at it you will smile. I promise.

  I love Cosmo Cricket stickers! They are absolutely my FAVORITE.

  Find stickers or words that make you happy and would encourage you to write and place them on the cover. Have fun with it! I wanted my cover very simple but you can put any sticker that makes you happy inside.

  Once you place your stickers on the cover coat the entire cover with Mod Podge. You can use any finish that you would like.

  Don’t worry about the stickers coming off. The one thing I love about Cosmo Cricket stickers is how thick they are. They almost feel like card stock which I like!

  When you put the Mod Podge on it will look white like this picture. I promise when it tries it will be translucent.

  The next thing I did was put a little Mod Podge on my plate and sprinkled glitter in it. I used Martha Stewart’s coral pink.

  Mix it good together with the Mod Podge!

  Then coat your journal anywhere you would like. I did the side to add a little bit of color to it. Remember when it dries it will be clear the and glitter will shine bright like a diamond!

  This is the final product! Now my stickers are on for good and the glitter will never come off. Every time I look at this I smile.

  Hahaha such a cute idea! This is my second year of bullet journalling and I kinda validate me recking my precious Lettchuturn by saying “it was practice”. This year I bought a slightly less expensive journal called Lemome. It has thick pages 120gsm, which is ideal for people who use watercolor or Tombow brush pens (like me) to avoid ghosting/bleeding, but it only comes in black and brown cover…. LAME! so I think I might use your idea! Just…. skip the glitter (when it gets on your hands it never comes off haha!!) Thanks!

I literally have years of journals that I keep little keepsakes in and jot so much down and it’s always fun to go back and look at them years later, well some of them haha. If you have to glue your pictures in the album, be sure to let each pages dry before turning the page or closing the book, so the pages do not get glued together.

  Decorate your album. Use whatever items you choose to add flair to your album. You could outline your pictures with ribbon, or put the title of the pictures on the page. Use your imagination. You might decorate each page with a different theme to reflect that page’s pictures, like Christmas themed decorations for pictures involving Christmas or dance themed decorations for someone who is a dancer. If your decorations touch your pictures, use the photo safe glue, if they do not, you can use the glue gun.

  Cover the outside of the album with a fabric of your choice. You can pick a fabric that reflects what sort of pictures are in the album. Cut the fabric so that it covers the outside of the album, ensuring that there is enough fabric to fold over onto the inside the cover. Close your album so that you can make sure there is enough fabric to allow this. Once you have cut your fabric, you can use your glue gun to affix the fabric to the album. You can even sew things onto the fabric, or have it monogrammed to add a more personal touch.

  1. Please print pages 2-3 of the downloaded document onto a white A4 card stock.
  2. Cut out the various diary reminder notes using a craft knife and ruler or a pair of scissors.
  3. Store these notes in a glass jar with your favourite washi tape or stick of glue on your desk near to your diary.
  4. As you plan your days and the events ahead stick these reminders in your diary to make it pretty and to keep you reminded of your upcoming commitments.

  It’s time to take up the visual component of running your precious organizer. There a several options for designing a diary and some ideas on how to make your notebook even brighter and more original.

  Armed with stickers, markers, scotch tape, and most importantly – inspiration. It will come in handy for you during all 365 days, which you will beautifully decorate in your diary.

  Multicolored pens and text highlighters will not only make the turn more fun, but also help you first of all pay attention to the most important plans in your diary.

  To attach an important document, a favorite photo or a picture you like, use ordinary clips or beautiful wooden clothespins.

  Multicolored decorative scotch can be combined on one page. Use it to decorate the edges of the notebook, to highlight important information or to create headings in your diary.

  It is not necessary to write down only future plans in the diary: save on the page a recipe of your favorite donuts, a shopping list or the names of films that you want to see on the weekends.

  Use a variety of stickers to record important information on them. Such labels are convenient because they can be transferred from page to page, and then completely removed from the notebook when the information is no longer relevant.

  Combine scraps from magazines along with stickers. The turn will look much brighter if it has accents in the form of a photo of your favorite model or a picture with a fur coat about which you dream.

  Draw squares, circles or hearts before each point of your to-do list so that by execution you can put a check mark or a cross next to it. Then you will remember exactly what you managed to do in a day, and what not.

  If you are not afraid of brightness, mix large stickers, clippings from magazines, collages and stickers with reminders on one spread. Use the diary as a platform for scrap booking, and then even the most boring and ordinary plans and duties will look attractive and interesting on the pages of your notebook.

  Do not forget to make yourself important reminders in the organizer, but experiment with their form. For example, if you accustom yourself to a healthy diet, paste motivating pictures and make a list of products that you would like to eat this week.

  How To Easily Decorate A Tiny Bathroom

  Some people think of decorating as those extra flourishes you add to a room after all the functional stuff is done. This can make it intimidating or baffling to try to decorate a small bathroom because a lot of the functional stuff is built-in.

  But if you modify your thinking a little, a small bathroom can actually be a lot of fun to decorate. The fact that it’s so small means you can splurge on relatively expensive items because you don’t need much of it.

  Pick A Colour Scheme Or Theme

  Although things like the sink and toilet are built-in, there are still some functional bits that you will need to add. This may include a shower curtain, storage and soap.

  If you have a colour scheme or theme, those functional items can be bought to fit that theme. You can find soap in a colour to match or in the shape of seashells or to match other themes. You can get a plain shower curtain to match a colour scheme or a shower curtain with a design to match your theme.

  If you think of those functional elements as part of the decor, this will give you a lot more latitude to inject some personality into a small space.

  Decorate The Walls

  One of the nice things about a small bathroom is you go a little wild with the walls. What would be just too much craziness in a bigger space can be a wonderful dash of personality in a smaller space.

  If you own the place, you can splurge on high-end paint or tile. The fact that it’s small means that higher-end materials may be within budget when they wouldn’t be for a larger room.

  But if you rent or if you just like to change things up regularly, there are less permanent options for going all out with wall decor. One of those is making custom wall posters.

  They are surprisingly affordable and can be updated on a whim. If you like changing the colour scheme or theme, you can order new custom posters for a lot less time, money and hassle than repainting the room every three months.

  Storage As A Statement

  One of the big challenges with a small bathroom is storage. If you have adjusted your thinking to see functional elements as also being design elements, storage is a tremendous opportunity to add some personality to the space.

  This will work best if you spend some time to do some essential leg work. Start by cataloguing what kinds of things you need to store in the space and taking measurements.

  Then spend some time looking at your options. This might involve physically visiting a variety of local stores or you might keep the search to internet sources of inspiration. Additionally, use storage bins or makeup organizers to keep it clutter-free.

  Storage options like hooks, floating shelves and a variety of over-the-door or over-the-shower-head items can add some pizzazz while making the space more functional. Open storage will help you see what is on hand and will minimize awkward interactions like trying to dodge the cabinet door while having too little manoeuvring room.

  Don’t Sweat The Small Stuff

  As long as you aren’t getting anything crazy expensive, like gold-plated faucets, decorating a small bathroom is an opportunity to grow and refine your tastes. You can afford to take a few chances on things a little outside your comfort zone because if they don’t work out, you can just replace it in a few weeks.

  You should approach this as a chance to let your hair down a little and worry less about what other people. It’s a fairly private space and may never even be seen by most visitors.

  It’s a chance to try brighter colours or different styles. It’s a chance to play with the decor and not fret about messing it up.

  You should just embrace it as a learning opportunity and a chance at exploration. It’s a good way to get to stretch your decorating boundaries for relatively little time, money and effort.

  Afterwards, you will be better equipped to tackle other rooms with some solid experience under your belt. It’s a great confidence-building exercise.

  Ideas for Putting Together a Memory Book

  Photos can tell the story of your life, a favorite vacation or a special event. Use your camera to capture meaningful moments to share for years to come. You can create an autobiography using pictures instead of words. Photojournalists often have to tell a story with just one shot if their work is going to be used in newspapers. Even if you are an amateur photographer, you can tell stories with your photos.

  Decide on a clear message. In order to tell a story with a single photograph, you’ll need to focus on a single point or idea. This can be an individual, a scene or an emotion. Even if the viewer of your photograph doesn’t know you, the scene should still get your point across.

  Take the photos in sequence. If you are trying to tell a story of a wedding or marathon, keep shooting. Not all of your pictures will be usable. Take as many photos as you can. Later you can arrange the pictures to describe every part of the event.

  Add text tags. When displaying your photos include writing. This can be a song or poem that corresponds with the photo. You can also write about your own ideas and feelings about the picture. Include any names and dates of events so you can remember them later on. Text gives you the opportunity to tell the rest of the story that the picture left out. You can even write about how you took the shot.

  Fill in the gaps. Your story might be clear to you, but not to a casual observer. If your photo is missing something add embellishments. You can do this with scrap booking elements or photo editing software. Crop the photo to show the main focus for a more dramatic effect.

  Treat your photos like a book. You photos might be like a short story or a novel. To tell the stories of your life pick up a scrapbook or album. Create a few pages highlighting the most memorable points of your life. Keep the album short and use the best pictures so viewers will be able to relate to your story regardless of how well they know you.

  Share your story. Once you’ve created a story using photos, get the word out. Put the story on your blog or email it to your family and friends. Your acquaintances will get to know you better. Join a Flickr group that specializes in telling entire stories in five pictures or less (see References). You’ll be able to get constructive criticism about your work and be inspired by other photographers. Sharing your photos also helps you to stay motivated to keep taking pictures and telling stories.

  Many people find decorating a mantel a daunting task but once you learn how to decorate your mantel the easy way you’ll never be intimidated again.

  And once you get the look you want you can just exchange pieces for different holidays. I often do this if I don’t have alot of time. In fact, I did it last Fall. This is what my fireplace looks like on a typical day…

  So for Fall, all I did was change out some pieces for similar pieces, change out some colors and I was done. It literally took me about 10 minutes. Here is what it looked like for Fall.

  If you are having trouble pulling together the look you want, the best way to tackle it is to go back to basics. Here are some elements and principles of design to consider: Space, Scale, Line, Balance, Form, Light, Color, Texture, Pattern. These will serve you well in anything you’re trying to decorate, from a table to a whole room.

  But some of the words sound fussy, so let me break it down for you.

  • Space — this just means the space you have to work with, so in this case the space is the size of your mantel. You only have so much width and depth so your object choices will be dependent on the space you have available.
  • Scale — this is just how the size of one object relates to the rest of the objects. If you have one giant item and lots of little bitty items around it, the scale will look “off”. Keeping the scale a little more balanced helps tie the whole thing together.
  • Line — think of a line. It can be straight, curved, zig-zag, free-form, horizontal, vertical…you get what I mean. Now think of a line in regards to the height and shape of your objects. If you have a formal fireplace, you may want straight lines or 45 degree angles meaning everything’s height is relative to the next object and building a specific visual line. As you can see below, I like a free-form line.
  • Balance — This has to do with symmetry. A symmetrical design is typically more formal than an asymmetrical one. But even if you want asymetrical, you don’t want a large quantity of items on one side, and few on the other. I have found that if you like a simple, elegant fireplace then symmetrical is often the way to go. If you like a lot of “stuff” on the fireplace then it pretty much comes out asymmetrical without trying. I typically like an asymmetrical look, mostly because I like alot of items displayed. But sometimes I change it up and want a simpler, scaled back look like I did for Valentine’s Day. Yes, for me this is scaled back!
  • Form — these are the objects themselves. What form do they take? Are they round, square, rectangle… A mixture of shapes keep the fireplace interesting.
  • Light — this element isn’t as relevant for a fireplace as it is for the whole room. But you don’t want the mantel to be in a dark corner of the room. There should be some ambient light and maybe some accent light on the mantel like candles or maybe a string of mini lights during the holidays.
  • Color — colors on your mantel can reflect the color scheme of the home or the holiday you’re decorating for.
  • Texture — one of my favorites. A mixture of textures add interest to any space. Here you’ll see I have fabric, plastic, natural wood and chicken wire all in one area!
  • Pattern — another favorite. Just like texture, patterns add some fun to your overall design.

  So now that you have considered all the elements, how do you put it all together? For any holiday or your everyday look, gather some items from around the house. I’m constantly stealing decor from one room and putting it in another. If you want to buy a few new pieces, some great places to buy beautiful and inexpensive items are Michael’s , Hobby Lobby , At Home or Home Goods .

  To dress the mantel, I start by adding one big piece in the middle…or almost middle. I like it slightly off center to keep that asymmetrical theme. Then I add a piece on each end to anchor the display. These can be two of the same like bookends, or two different pieces of similar height and weight. Then the rest is just fill in. Keep in mind that you can stack items, like items on top of books above. Add as many or as few items as fits your taste, keeping in mind the elements above and using a mixture of textures, colors, shapes and sizes.

  You’ll find how-to’s throughout the web that say you can’t have too many things on your mantel… or that you can’t have too few items…or that you can’t hang a mirror because it reflects the ceiling…but here is the bottom line. There is no right or wrong. It’s your mantel. It’s your taste. Incorporate some simple elements of design and you’ll get exactly the look you’re going for. Then if you want to keep life simple, when you’re ready to decorate for a holiday keep your basic design and swap out some pieces for holiday decor.

  You Will Need

  Draw the shape of the diary on a piece of white felt and cut it out.

  Some people consider the dining room the most essential room in the house, as it is where the family comes together at the end of a long day and finally enjoys each other’s company. Most families want this room to be well thought-out and attractively styled, but sometimes the architecture of the house makes this problematic. You may actually have a tiny space to work around with, in which you must set your dining table, chairs, as well as any other things that go into your dining room.

  You may be able to fit in a dining table, but then you hardly have room left for any decorations. Here are a few tips on how to decorate your small dining room, while making sure its utility is also maximised!

  1. Extendable Tables

  One of the most convenient and creative solutions to this problem is the use of extendable tables. They save a lot of space and can look really good. They come in a variety of styles, makes, and colours to liven up your dining room.

  2. Round Tables and Tuck-in Chairs

  Another solution to avoid having a cramped up dining room is to have round tables – which are easier to fit anywhere – and armless chairs – which are easy to tuck-in when not being used. They leave you space to add other furniture and give you more opportunities to decorate. You can get a dull or white coloured table with chairs in a contrasting and brighter colour. You can place a large rug under the table and chairs to give the small area a personality of its own. You can even have chairs of a different colour each, depending on how you decorate the rest of the room.

  3. Shelves

  Cabinets and sideboards take up a lot of space. Go for mounted shelves instead. They are pleasant to look at, can be decorated in various ways, and take up no extra space.

  4. Dining Benches

  Dining benches save space, accommodate many people at a time, and can look very trendy. They can be pushed under the table when not being used. The style and colour of the bench can be experimented with, to add to the décor of the room.

  5. Mirror

  Adding a large mirror in your dining room can give off the illusion that space is actually much larger. It also looks very good with most themes.

  6. Walls and Ceiling
