We have seen and used the Libraries feature of Windows 7. We also talked about a software to help you manage the Windows Libraries. Now, there is one thing I really love about it and that’s the customized icons that it shows for the special folders in it (Documents, Music, Pictures and Videos). It gives a glimpse of what is stored within.
I also have the habit of maintaining my computer drives in a similar fashion. Say for example, a dedicated drive for all my entertainment stuff, another one for all my software and so on and so forth. In such a scenario it would not be a bad idea to change the drive icons in representation to what it contains. That’s exactly what we are going to discuss today – a manual process and another one that involves the use of a portable tool.
Before we look at the process of changing drive icons let us take a look at two of my drive icons. Here’s a section of the image.
The Manual Way
Generally I avoid using tools to work around such things. That opens up opportunities to learn and also know what actually happens. So, this one should be interesting. Follow the steps to change any drive icon manually.
Step 1: Select an icon for your drive and paste a copy of the same at the root of the drive whose icon you desire to change. Take note of the file name. Say for example, it is TV.ico.
Step 2: Launch Notepad and insert the code shown below (as-is) with the difference that you should replace mydriveicon with the name of your icon file.
[autorun]
ICON=mydriveicon.ico
The file I created contains the code as shown in the image below. I replaced mydriveicon with TV as an example.
Step 3: Save this file in the same location i.e root of the concerned drive. You should save the file with the name autorun.inf. Ensure that All Files type is selected when you save the file, else it will end up saving it as a text file.
The above steps mean you should have two files in the root of the drive – the icon, and the autorun file.
Step 4: Restart your machine and you should be able to see the change. Check out the image to see my new drive icon.
Note: This process will not work with external drives. And if you ever wish to revert, just remove these two files and restart your computer.
By Using Seven Drive Icon Changer
This is an application-supported process and is much easier to configure. Just a click and your icon would be changed.
Step 1: Download the application and unzip the file. Run the executable file to see the following interface.
Step 2: Click on the Browse button and choose your icon file. You may search for the available ones by using the expression *.ico.
Step 3: Back on the tool, select the letter of the drive to change the icon for and click on Change icon! In case you want to revert, just execute the application again and click on Reset icon!
Conclusion
My computer has different icons for all my drives and it corresponds to the contents in them. That way it gives a decent look to my system and also impresses people who get a chance to use my machine. Do you plan to do a similar thing? If yes, which process you plan to use?

Windows lets you partition your hard drive into any number of partitions. Other than the Windows Installation drive. i.e, the C drive, all drive has the same drive icon. For better usability, it is good to have different drive icons. Follow these steps to change drive icons in Windows 10.
Now, most of you know that you can rename a drive by selecting the drive and pressing the F2 key on your keyboard. However, it is not that easy to change the drive icon. You have to go through a couple of hoops to do set a new icon to a drive or partition.
The good thing is, it is pretty easy. Let me show you how.
Preparation
The icon should be in the ICO format. Most icons or images you download from the internet are in PNG or JPG format. If that’s the case, use this website to convert them to ICO format. Also, make sure that the icon is at least 512×512 in dimensions so that they appear sharp and clear.
If you don’t already have an icon, you can either google it or use web services like or
Steps to Change Drive Icon (Set Custom Icon to Drive Partition)
To set a new drive icon, all we have to do is create a new file and add the icon path in it. For example, I have a dedicated drive for my downloads folder. So, I can set a new drive icon to that drive by creating the said file and pointing it to the icon file.
1. First, copy the icon to the root of the drive for which you want to change or set the new icon. For example, since I want to change the D drive icon, I copied the downloaded icon to the root of D drive.
Note: If the icon is in some other drive, the trick may not work and you will see a blank page like icon instead of the regular or the changed icon.
2. Now, create a new text file and name it “autorun”.
3. Open the text file and copy and paste the following code in it. Don’t forget to replace the IconName with the actual icon name.
4. Save the file and close it.
5. Next, rename the file from “autorun.txt” to “autorun.inf”. Essentially, you are changing the file format from TXT to INF.
6. To make things look nicer, right-click on both the autorun.inf file and icon.ico file, select properties and then select the “Hidden” checkbox. This will make sure the file won’t appear when you are normally using the drive.
7. Finally, restart the system and you should see the new drive icon in the file explorer.
That is all. It is that easy to change drive icon in Windows 10.
If you are stuck in the process or need some help, comment below. I will try to help as much as possible.

The Location Tracking service in Windows 10, will tell the apps where your location is and you may or may not want this happening. When any app uses the Location settings to identify your location, you will see a round icon in your taskbar. This would mean that your location is currently in use in Windows 10.
Your location is currently in use
If you do not want your Windows 10 device to reveal your location, you can disable this service. To do so open Settings > Privacy > Location.
Disable Location Tracking for each user
In the right side, you will have to toggle the Location slider from the On position to the Off position.
When you do this, the Location Tracking service for your account will be disabled and apps and services will not be able to request for, your location and location history.
Turn off Location Tracking for entire device
If you want to totally disable the Location setting, just above this setting, you will see a Change button. Click on it and set the Location for this device as Off.
When you do this, the location for your device is set to Off, and the Location services will be disabled for all the users.
Clear Location History
While there, you may also want to clear Location history on this device, by clicking on the Clear button.
Choose apps that can use your location
Below this you can choose apps that can use your location. Here you can control the location settings for each app individually. To do this, both the above settings have to set to On.
Geofencing
Scroll down further and you will see a Geofencing setting. A Geofence is a geographical boundary. Apps will use your location to see if you are crossing this boundary either way. If any of your apps use this feature, you will be offered a setting to turn it On or Off.

If you’ve ever wished you could change the icon Windows uses for a drive in File Explorer, then you’re in luck. We have two ways to show you how to do just that.
Changing your drive icons is just one of the many ways you can customize your icons in Windows. You can even make high-resolution icons out of your own images if you can’t find other icons you like. We’ve got two ways you can change drive icons in Windows. The first way uses a free third-party app to let you change the icon for an individual drive. The second way involves a couple of quick edits to the Windows Registry.
Option One: Change an Individual Drive Icon with Drive Icon Changer
The easiest way to change the icon for an individual drive is with a free tool named Drive Icon Changer. It was originally written for Windows Vista but it also works in Windows 7, 8, and 10 to let you quickly change the icon for any drive.
After you download and extract the program, you’ll need to run it with administrative privileges. Right-click the EXE file and choose “Run as administrator.” The first time you run the tool, it may ask you to install some .NET Framework files, so go ahead and let it do that. It’s also a portable app, so there’s no installation necessary.
After running it, you’ll see that Drive Icon Changer has only one screen where you select the drive for which you want to change the icon and then browse for the ICO file you want to use. There are no additional settings available. Select your drive, find your ICO file, and then click the “Save” button. In our example, we’re using a set of wooden drive icons from IconArchive.
You’ll get a notification that the icon has been changed successfully.
You’ll then need to restart your PC for the change to take effect if you selected an internal drive. If you selected a removable drive, you can also just disconnect and reconnect it. If you’re changing the icons for multiple drives, you can also wait and restart your PC when you’re done with all of them.
After restarting, you should see your new drive icon in File Explorer.
Drive Icon Changer works by creating two hidden files on the root directory of whatever drive you select. One is a copy of the ICO file that gets renamed to “Drive.ico” and the other is a simple autorun.inf file that contains only the following lines:
So, if you prefer, you could just create that autorun.inf file yourself using Notepad, copy the ICO file to your drive and rename it, restart your PC (or disconnect and reconnect the drive if it’s removable), and the drive icon would change. The tool just makes it a bit easier.
And if you want to reverse the changes you’ve made to a drive, all you have to do is delete those two files.
NOTE: Since this works by saving files to the drive, optical drives are tricky. You won’t be able edit the image used for an empty optical drive or the image used when a finalized disc is inserted. You can, however, change the image for a rewritable drive or a writeable drive you haven’t finalized yet. You can change optical drive icons using the instructions in the next section, though.
Change an Individual Drive Icon by Editing the Registry
While changing an individual drive icon is much easier using Drive Icon Changer, you can also make a similar change by editing the Registry. Why go through the extra effort? Well, you might have some autorun restrictions in place that don’t let you use the first method, or you might want to change the icon used for an optical drive. Maybe you don’t like the idea of letting an app do what you can do yourself. Or maybe you’re just curious to see where this stuff is in the Registry. At any rate, the changes are really pretty easy and they work in Windows 7, 8, and 10.
Standard warning: Registry Editor is a powerful tool and misusing it can render your system unstable or even inoperable. This is a pretty simple hack and as long as you stick to the instructions, you shouldn’t have any problems. That said, if you’ve never worked with it before, consider reading about how to use the Registry Editor before you get started. And definitely back up the Registry (and your computer!) before making changes.
Open the Registry Editor by hitting Start and typing “regedit.” Press Enter to open Registry Editor and give it permission to make changes to your PC.
In the Registry Editor, use the left sidebar to navigate to the following key:
Next, you’re going to create a new key inside the DriveIcons key. Right-click the DriveIcons key and choose New > Key. Name the new key using the drive letter you want to change. In our example, we’re changing drive H.
NOTE: As you probably noticed, this method differs from using Drive Icon Changer in that, instead of using the autorun feature, you’re actually assigning the icon to a drive letter. For that reason, you may not get the results you want with removable drives. This especially holds true if you use multiple reusable drives and the letters change often. To get around this, you can assign static drive letters to your removable drives.
Now, you’re going to create another new key, this time inside the drive letter key you just created. Right click the key you named after your drive letter and choose New > Key. Name the new key “DefaultIcon.”
Select the new DefaultIcon key in the left pane and then, in the right pane, double-click the (Default) value to open its properties window.
In the “Edit String” window, type the full path (surrounded by quotes) for the ICO file you want to use as your icon into the “Value data” box and then click “OK.”
The changes should take effect immediately, so you won’t need to restart your PC. Open File Explorer—or refresh the window if it was already open—and you should see the new drive icon.
If you want to reverse the changes, just head back to the DriveIcons key in Registry Editor and delete the drive letter key you created.
Favicons are a seemingly (and literally!) small, but significant way of promoting your brand on your website. We’re visual by nature, meaning we’re more likely to recognize that little blue bird icon for Twitter, or that red-lined envelope for Gmail, quicker than we are their names when browsing our bookmarks bar. You can create favicons yourself by making ICO files in Photoshop. A course like the QuickStart guide to Photoshop CC will teach you about favicons and lots of other things you didn’t even know Photoshop could do.
Having a unique favicon for your website will make it easier for consumers to locate your site on a busy bookmarks bar, or among a series of tabs, and also reassure them when they do make it to your page that they’re at the right place.
There’s no doubt the favicon is essential for anyone with a website. The only question is, how do you make one? Well, it starts with the Photoshop ICO file format.
What is a Favicon?
First of all, what is a favicon? Short for favorite icon, and also described as a shortcut icon, a tab icon, or a bookmark icon among other things, a favicon is a small, usually 16×16 mini logo you can use on your website. If a browser supports it, it will display the favicon in the places like the address bar, the bookmarks bar, tabs, page history, browsing data, etc.
Udemy.com’s favicon is the small, green square with a capital U, as displayed above in a tab.
Favicons are saved as ICO files, a file format that saves multiple images at different sizes for scaling purposes. All icons in Windows, from desktop executables to Start Menu applications, are saved as .ico file extensions.
Creating ICO Files in Photoshop
Photoshop is a great and flexible graphics editing program for creating custom favicons. However, in order to save files under the .ico file extension in Photoshop, you have to download a separate plug-in. Luckily, this is really easy to do.
Step 1 – Install the plug-in
You can find the plug-in at a website called Telegraphics. You’re looking for the download labeled ICO (Windows Icon) Format, which is available for both Mac and Windows.
To install the plug-in, first make sure Photoshop is closed. Extract the downloaded files and place them in the Plug-Ins > File Formats sub-folder in your designated Adobe Photoshop location.
Now when you open Photoshop, create a new document, click Save As, and expand the drop-down menu, the ICO file type should be an option.
Step 2 – Create your favicon in a 64×64 document
If you’re a total pro and able to work within the confines of 16×16 pixels, by all means, go for it! But if you need a little more space to work with, you can start out with a document that is 64×64 pixels, and then scale it down later.
If you know how all the graphic design and editing features in Photoshop work, you should have no problem designing a basic icon. If you don’t know how any of the palette tools work, you should consider reading up on it first! Try out this Photoshop Essentials course, then come back to this tutorial once you’re a graphic design master!
For our example favicon, we’ve created a simple gradient background and a single letter “A” to represent our “brand.”
Step 3 – Scale it down to 16×16
Now it’s time to resize the favicon so it’s compatible with web browsers. Go to Image > Image Size in the menu at the top, or press Alt+Ctrl+I, and change the size to 16×16. Make sure that’s pixels, and not inches.
It’s also good to open up the drop-down menu where it says Resample and select the Bicubic Sharper option. This ensures the image doesn’t blur too much when it’s resized, but if it still loses too much sharpness, you can always adjust those properties with the Filter options.
If done correctly, you should see your 64×64 icon transformed into a 16×16 favicon!
Rounding the corners of your favicon can give it a whole new look. Depending on what kind of style you’re going for, it might be worth learning how to do.
This QuickStart guide to Photoshop CC shows how you can do it easily with Photoshop CC’s new features. For older versions, consider this Photoshop training course on mastering the basics.
Step 4 – Save your favicon as an ICO, or .ico file type
This step is simple. If you installed the plug-in correctly, now it’s time to go up to File > Save As, open up the drop-down menu and select the ICO (Windows Icon) (*.ICO) option. Hit the Save button, and you should be prompted about the icon format.
It’s recommended you save your file as a Standard ICO, since the PNG (Vista) format is not very compatible.
After hitting OK, you might feel confused. Why does the Photoshop application still refer to our favicon as a .psd, when we just saved it as an ICO? That’s because an ICO file is not editable in Photoshop. Just try to open it up, and see. Once you save your favicon as an ICO, that ICO file is final. If you want to make changes to it, you’ll have to continue editing the .psd file until you’re satisfied with the final product, and save it as an ICO again.
Using Your ICO File on Your Website
So you have your beautiful new favicon saved as an ICO file, but how do you actually make it show up in bookmark bars and tabs for your website?
This first rule is important to know: your ICO file should be saved (or moved to) the directory where your home page is located, usually the root folder. If you save it in a separate image directory or elsewhere, the browser will not be able to find it.
Next, make sure you have the following inserted between the tag in the HTML document for your home page:
FaviconNameHere should be substituted with the name of your .ico favicon file. By default, browsers will search for “favicon.ico” so it’s best to save it as such.
And you’ve done it! You’ve created a unique favicon for your website, and learned how to use it too. For more tips on web and graphic design, consider some of the following courses through Udemy:
