In Japan, Food Can Be Almost Too Cute To Eat

From an early age, Japanese kids are taught to “eat with your eyes,” and this emphasis on the visual delights of food can be found in many aspects of Japan’s vaunted culture of cute.

Take children’s television, for example. Some of the most beloved cartoon characters in Japan are based on food items.

One favorite is Anpanman, or “Bread Man” — a superhero whose head is made out of a sweet roll filled with red bean paste (yeah, we’re a bit baffled, too). Anpanman spends most of his time running around, saving starving children by letting them take bites out of his oh-so-delicious head. His friends include Shokupanman, whose head is made from a piece of sliced white bread, and Currypanman, whose head is made from a piece of — you guessed it — curry-filled bread.

This obsession with cute food manifests itself in all sorts of ways. Take Hannari Tofu — the cutest chunk of soybean curd you’re likely to encounter. The character pops up on a range of plush merchandise, from stuffed animals to key holders.

Debra Samuels, a chef and author of My Japanese Table, used to live in Japan with her family. She says it didn’t take her long to realize how tightly everyday life revolved around visuals, especially when it came to food.

After her young son started complaining that the peanut-butter-and-jelly sandwiches she was packing for him weren’t “cute enough” for kindergarten, Samuels embraced the Japanese food aesthetic.

She began carving apple wedges into the shapes of bunnies. She added “baloney bangs” to sandwiches with faces.

“The first thing you do when you look at something is to see whether you want to eat it or not. It’s very important in Japanese culture,” she tells All Things Considered host Audie Cornish. “Kids learn this from a very early age.”

And from an early age, Japanese kids also get some pretty excellent school lunches, called kyushoku. Served to all first- through sixth-graders, these standardized meals serve a similar purpose as school uniforms. As Samuels explains, “Everybody gets the same lunch. There are kids that are traumatized because their lunches are not as cute as their neighbors.’ “

These school lunches are locally grown and usually made from scratch. They’re so yummy that, as The Washington Post reported earlier this week, some kids ask their parents to re-create the meals at home. And they’re healthful, too, which has encouraged some parents to ring up schools for the recipes. It’s hard to imagine the same thing happening in the U.S.

Spring is the perfect time of the year to learn drawing a bug or two… We already showed you how to draw a ladybug and a butterfly and now it’s time to show you how the steps for drawing one of the world’s most hard working bugs – the bees.

We created a tutorial that will show you all the steps to drawing a cute little buzzing creature and you will be done in no time.

How to Draw a Bee Step by Step Instructions

• our printable drawing guide (completely optional, but handy – you can grab it at the end of the tutorial)
• paper
• your favorite marker
• optional: coloring supplies

Step 1

Start by drawing a circle shape. This will be the head of your bee.

Step 2

Start by drawing an oval shape. This will be the body of the bee.

Step 3

Draw stripes (lines) in the oval, they can be either arched up or down. The number of stripes isn’t important. Also add two eyes and mouth in the circle shape.

Step 4

Now comes the first pair of wings.

Step 5

Draw the second pair of smaller wings under the first set of wings.

Step 6

Draw the sting and antennae. And you are all done! You have just learned how to draw a cute little buzzing bee.

You can even add a dashed line coming out of the sting, which will give the effect of the bee flying. Pretty simple and cool addition to your picture.

Step 7

Now that you have finished your bee, it’s time to color it. If you want to give your picture a bit of depth, color it darker around the edges, and lighter in the middle. This will give it a more 3D feel.

Earlier this week, Nintendo released Jump Rope Challenge for free on the Switch eShop. It’s a cute, simple game that was actually created by a few Nintendo devs while working from home, designed to keep them moving while in lockdown.

It might be a pretty basic experience, but it seems like Switch owners are really getting into it. Nintendo has revealed today that more than 200 million jumps have been recorded by players in the game’s first three days.

In just three days, more than 200 million jumps in #JumpRopeChallenge have been made by players around the world! Thanks to all for playing and getting active!

It’s hard to strike the right note when you’re texting a recent crush, and having some questions to ask your crush can help you get them to open. We all love the charm of an old-fashioned, epic love letter, but in today’s modern world, it can feel a little out of place. Like, if your boyfriend’s roommates caught him opening a handwritten letter in fancy calligraphy on scented paper, he’d probably never hear the end of it. And besides, how would you even know what to write? “Hey, babe, love ya” might be about as poetic as you get.

But still, in a sea of disposable text messages and Snapchats, it’s lovely to have the occasional written evidence of the romance in your relationship. The kind of thing you can save in a scrapbook or shoebox of memories and then look through them 20 years later with your future children. Awww.

You may not be Elizabeth Barrett Browning, but you can still do it in your own way. Here are a few tips to inspire you to send a modern, cute, non-sappy love letter that feels appropriate for even the most unsentimental guy to treasure forever.

Send it on a postcard with a special memory. Have you ever noticed that these days, a lot of restaurants give you a postcard with their logo with your check? Smart advertising move for them, genius free love letter idea for you. At the end of a date night with your guy, slip the postcard in your purse, and then later, write a sweet note about the evening you just spent together: How good the dessert you split was, how handsome he looked all dressed up in his suit, how much you always love just spending time with him. It’s short, it’s sweet, it’s an automatic keeper for the memory box. This would also be great to do at the end of a vacation and mail to him to relive the good times at home.

Slip a note for him to find when you’re not there. Don’t want the hassle of the post office? That’s fine. On a morning when you stayed at his place but won’t be there that night, slide a note under his pillow wishing him sweet dreams. Or hide a little card in his suitcase as he’s packing, so that when he’s on a trip, he’ll have a letter from you telling him that you miss him already.

Get a little sexy. An easy way to cut down on the sap factor? Make it so hot he’ll be flushed with excitement, not embarrassment. You don’t have to write the next Fifty Shades of Grey (nor should you), but take some inspiration from Georgia O’Keeffe, writer of one of the 10 best love letters linked below. Sample line: “My body is simply crazy with wanting you.” Helloooooo. Blush. (Hide this letter from the future kids, though.)

Make it an annual event. Start a sweet tradition by writing your guy a note every year on an anniversary of your choosing (e.g., your first date, your wedding anniversary, first time you said “I love you”). Besides marking every year of your relationship, it gives you a great jumping-off point for what to start writing. You can say your favorite memory of the past year, or where you hope the two of you will be next year, or five years down the road. Writer’s block, cured.

Embrace the cheese. Can’t figure out how to say how you’re feeling without sounding like an angsty teenager? Maybe just embrace it and go full-on, over-the-top cornball with a rhyming poem filled with silly cliches. After all, isn’t part of what makes your relationship great all the laughter and funny times you’ve shared? Maybe it’s not one for the history books, but it might be perfect for your history.

Just say what’s in your heart. Don’t overthink it. You love this guy, right? You think he’s the best man on the entire planet? Exactly. So tell him that. Everybody loves a compliment. Just tell him all the things you’d brag about to your friends if he wasn’t listening (but obviously, skip the other stuff you’d say behind his back, like how you’d complain about the way he leaves his wet towels on the bed). It can be easy to forget to tell the person you love how much you appreciate him, and it always makes more of an impact in writing.

The future of transportation, as imagined by the company, involves driverless car(toon)s.

When Ford introduced the Model T in 1908, the company transformed not just how cars were manufactured, but also how they were marketed. Automobiles, previously, had been luxury goods, often associated with sports—the toys, basically, of the wealthy and the daring. But Ford, in its desire to sell its products at scale, also needed to normalize its products at scale: to associate them in the public mind not with adventure, but with banality.

“I will build a car for the great multitude,” Ford put it.

It will be large enough for the family, but small enough for the individual to run and take care of. It will be constructed of the best materials, by the best men to be hired, after the simplest designs that modern engineering can devise. But it will be so low in price that no man making a good salary will be unable to own one—and enjoy with his family the blessings of hours of pleasure in God’s great open spaces.

With the prototype of the driverless car it announced last night, Google is doing something similar. It is taking the logic that has underscored so much of late-20th-century car marketing—cars as luxury, cars as freedom, cars as sex—and flipped it. There is nothing pretty or powerful about Google’s prototype. There is certainly, no offense to the little guy, nothing sexy about it. The car is instead—and there really is no other way to say it—adorable. It looks like a cross between a Volkswagen Beetle and a Disneyland ride. It has a face. With a button nose. And wide eyes . Look closely, and it seems to be grinning at you. Wheeee.

Which would be weird, especially in a market that prefers to associate cars with deeply held ideals of independence and, literally, self-direction. But, of course, this is intentional cartoonishness. Google’s prototypes aren’t meant to convey ideals so much as they’re meant to convey … familiarity. Friendliness. The reassurance that comes, implicitly, with being part of “the great multitude.”

They are, like the Model T before them, strategically banal.

And they sort of have to be. Because driverless cars could be revolutionary. They are, one non-driver at a time, attempting to transform transportation not just as an infrastructure, but as an activity and as an assumption. As Larry Burns, former head of R&D at GM and a consultant to Google, told Alexis, “I think this is not evolutionary but a major shift in how we think about personal mobility.”

But does the West’s unique concept of cuteness make Google’s cars seem, well, a little incompetent? Atlantic contributing editor Ian Bogost on the company’s mistake: Google Car for Sale: Slightly Underquipped.

And you know what consumers, in general, don’t tend to love in their technology? Major shifts—at least, major shifts that come suddenly, bringing transformation without the courtesy of lethargy. (Take neurasthenia, the 19th-century idea that “wireless telegraphy, science, steam power, newspapers and the education of women; in other words modern civilization” was to blame for “widespread anxiety, depression, headaches and fatigue.” The long-ago-discredited disorder was also known as “Americanitis.”) We consumers of technology, as unapologetic adopters of status quo bias, tend to like the changes foisted on us to be incremental. And when new devices—new approaches—violate the status quo, we tend to dismiss them in a way that recalls the 19th-century anxieties. We call them “creepy.”

As Google’s then-CEO, Eric Schmidt, put it to The Atlantic‘s James Bennet in 2010: “Google policy is to get right up to the creepy line and not cross it.”

For the driverless car prototype, that approach involves . adorability. The driverless car(toon) is evidence and symptom of what Buzzfeed‘s Charlie Warzel calls “Moonshot Google”—the rebranding of the company as “the Google that wants to use your information, along with everyone else’s, to teach machines how to drive cars, heat your home, and keep you alive longer.” Moonshot Google is the Google that, instead of grazing the creepy line, leaps over it. It’s the Google that, in the case of the driverless car, has bargained that the best response to paranoia is pareidolia. It’s the Google that recognizes that the root of “kawaii,” the Japanese concept of cuteness, is not just ai, or love, but also ka—acceptability. It’s the Google that hopes what we find “cute” and what we find “creepy” will be, on some level, mutually exclusive.

Many companies who have taken a stance against xenophobia have workplaces oozing with inequities and . [+] discrimination.

Within the past week, a number of global companies have pledged their support for the Black community and the Black Lives Matter movement, and are denouncing racial injustices. While it is important for your company to not remain silent during these tumultuous times, it’s hard to distinguish performative allyship from authentic and genuine intentions that will lead to actual change. With every senseless killing of a Black person, there seems to be public outcry, pledges for change, then the public forgets and the cycle repeats. Many companies who have taken a stance against xenophobia have workplaces oozing with inequities and discrimination. But what happened to George Floyd, Ahmaud Arbery, Breonna Taylor and so many others as of late is the straw that will break America’s proverbial back. Pressure is being applied to corporations and many have been called out for public statements that don’t align with organizational culture. Below are five ways that your organization can put words into action and create long-lasting change.

1. Talk about race. There is a lot of fear and uncertainty around racial dialogue. Race is one of the most difficult topics for people to discuss. It’s like the hot pink elephant in the room that everyone sees but no one wants to admit that they see it. Many people feel as though they were raised to be colorblind, and they “don’t see race” and have convinced themselves that they are not one of the people that has contributed to systems of inequity. This colorblind viewpoint is extremely problematic. In order to address workplace inequities, there must be an acknowledgement of how things like white privilege, implicit bias and microaggressions contribute to exclusionary environments. We have to talk about race, how racism manifests and what it looks like, if we are ever to address and mitigate it. Discussions about race during inclusion and equity workshops are imperative.

2. Monthly inclusion events. While we are on the subject of workshops, no change will ever occur or be long-lasting if there aren’t consistent interventions. If sexual harassment training is required in order to meet compliance regulations, then inclusion training, and particularly racial equity education, should also be a mandatory piece of the organization’s fabric. Monthly workshops, panel discussions and open forums featuring subject matter experts are a great way to keep the diversity, equity and inclusion momentum going and allow for an open line of communication between employees and management.

3. Address systemic issues. No amount of unconscious bias trainings will be impactful if organizational policies, procedures, and practices are not addressed. Assess organizational structures to ensure fairness and equity. Is there an explicit and objective process for employee promotion? Are projects and assignments being allocated equitably? Are all employees encouraged and given equal opportunities to contribute their ideas? How is pay determined? Conduct a pay audit to ensure employees are being paid fairly. There should be objective criteria to evaluate and assess employee performance. There should also be blind systems to ensure that qualified job candidates of different backgrounds have an equal chance of being selected for open roles.

4. Limit referral hiring. The similar-to-me effect postulates that people show preference for people who are similar to them. If a job candidate reminds you of your daughter, you may be more likely to hire them. If an employee reminds you of your younger self, you may be more lenient when evaluating their performance, which can lead to the halo effect. Recognizing how our unconscious biases can impact the hiring process can allow interventions to be implemented to lessen these biases. Many companies utilize a referral hiring system, but this can lead to an echo-chamber environment where groupthink becomes the norm. Make a concerted effort to limit referral hiring and ensure that there is a rubric with objective criteria when selecting job candidates.

Researchers say human brains can become overwhelmed by cute traits, such as large eyes and small noses, embodied by movie characters like Bambi.

The holiday season is all about cute. You’ve got those ads with adorable children and those movies about baby animals with big eyes.

But when people encounter too much cuteness, the result can be something scientists call “cute aggression.”

People “just have this flash of thinking: ‘I want to crush it’ or ‘I want to squeeze it until pops’ or ‘I want to punch it,’ ” says Katherine Stavropoulos, a psychologist in the Graduate School of Education at the University of California, Riverside.

About half of all adults have those thoughts sometimes, says Stavropoulos, who published a study about the phenomenon in early December in Frontiers in Behavioral Neuroscience. But those people wouldn’t really take a swipe at Bambi or Thumper, she says.

“When people feel this way, it’s with no desire to cause harm,” Stavropoulos says. The thoughts appear to be an involuntary response to being overwhelmed by a positive emotion.

Cute aggression is often baffling and embarrassing to the people who experience it. Stavropoulos says they think, “This is weird; I’m probably the only one who feels this way. I don’t want to hurt it. I just want to eat it.”

Cute aggression was first described by researchers at Yale University several years ago.

But Stavropoulos, a cute aggressor herself, wanted to know what it looked like in the brain.

So she and a colleague recorded the electrical activity in the brains of 54 young adults as they looked at images of animals and people.

The images included both grown-ups and babies. Some had been manipulated to look less appealing. Others were made extra adorable, meaning “big cheeks, big eyes, small noses — all these features we associate with cuteness,” Stavropoulos says.

The study found that for the entire group of participants, cuter creatures were associated with greater activity in brain areas involved in emotion. But the more cute aggression a person felt, the more activity the scientists saw in the brain’s reward system.

That suggests people who think about squishing puppies appear to be driven by two powerful forces in the brain. “It’s not just reward and it’s not just emotion,” Stavropoulos says. “Both systems in the brain are involved in this experience of cute aggression.”

The combination can be overwhelming. And scientists suspect that’s why the brain starts producing aggressive thoughts. The idea is that the appearance of these negative emotions helps people get control of the positive ones running amok.

“It could possibly be that somehow these expressions help us to just sort of get it out and come down off that baby high a little faster,” says Oriana Aragón, an assistant professor at Clemson University who was part of the Yale team that gave cute aggression its name.

Aggressive thoughts in response to adorable creatures are just one example of “dimorphous expressions of positive emotion,” Aragón says.

“So people who, you know, want to pinch the babies cheeks and growl at the baby are also people who are more likely to cry at the wedding or cry when the baby’s born or have nervous laughter,” she says.

Aragon says she’s one of these people: “For me, puppies are just amazing and adorable and cute and I cannot resist them.”

How to Draw a Cat Tutorial

Step by Step Cat Drawing Instructions

Step 1

Start by drawing an oval shape for the head. It can be boxy, more circle like or even a slightly triangular one.

Step 2

Time to start making a few triangles. Draw two triangle shapes for the ears and one triangle shape for the nose. You could also make the nose oval or round.

Step 3

Let’s make the cat face! Draw two smaller triangle shaped lines inside the eras. Make two spots for eyes. Next lets make the mouth. Start by drawing short straight line from the bottom of the nose downwards. Starting next to this line (on the left) draw the mouth curve, bring it down and up again to meet the line you made under the nose. Continue with another curve.

Draw one more curve in bellow the two curves (in the middle). Mouth complete.

Step 4

Also start drawing the body. Draw two curved lines, one on the left side and one one the right.

Step 5

Draw feet. Start with the front ones (long U shape). Hind legs are optional, but I do think they can complement the picture.

Step 6

Almost done! Just a few more details left. Like claws, the line that completes the belly and a tail.

Congratulations! You have just learned how to draw a cat.

How to Draw a Dog – Step by Step Directed Drawing

Dog Drawing Instructions

Step 1

Start by drawing an oval shape. You can make a perfect oval or make it to be a bit more “boxy”. Nothing wrong if it’s more round. This will be the snout.

Step 2

Continue by making a inverted U shape above the oval you have previously drawn. This will be the head. Also make the nose. You can make it round or more of a triangle shape.

Step 3

Draw the ears. We think droopy or folded ears are the best, but you could also draw pointy, button or any other shape you want.

Step 4

Lets finish up the dog face. Draw two spots for eyes and two arches above the eyes for the eyebrows. Draw a straight line from the snout and a wavy line for the mouth.

Also make the front pair of legs.

Time to make the body!

Step 6

Last but not lest, draw a pair of hind legs and a wiggly tail.

Show of Support: Mother’s acceptance of child’s sexuality goes viral

SHE may be only eight years old, but she’s already got a cult following and has been dubbed the next supermodel.

Kristina Pimenova, the Russian child modelling sensation, can count hundreds of fan sites dedicated to her: “She has millions of fans … and step by step, Kristina is approaching a great success,” declares one blog, while others — journalists and public admirers — cannot marvel enough at her silky dark blonde hair, “stunning azure blue eyes” and “angel face”.

Fans have been documenting her very short life with an almost scientific precision: she was born in Moscow on December 27th (“only two days after Christmas!” one blog helpfully points out), and spent the first few years of her life in Paris with her soccer-player father, Ruslan Pimenov, model mother Glikeriya Shirokova, and big sister, 14-year-old Natalia.

She has 294,000 followers on Instagram, nearly 900 followers on her English Twitter account, more than 2 million followers on Facebook, and a YouTube channel that has been viewed more than 3,500 times.

She’s walked down the catwalk, has graced the cover of Vogue Bambini, and wears Roberto Cavalli and Benetton.

“The most beautiful girl in the world,” screams Women Daily magazine, featuring more than 20 photographs of Kristina looking either vague or contemplative, her long hair teased and cascading, her little pink lips pursed and those blue, blue eyes staring somewhere beyond the viewer’s right shoulder.

On the site, one photo in particular has attracted comments: Kristina lying, chest down, on a bed, her expression sultry as she stares out of the photograph, bared-shouldered and messy-haired.

“That last picture, though. *Chris Hanson seat offering intensifies*”, writes reader Alexis.

Another reader, Pierre, cuts straight to the point: “She’s a pretty kid but the photos creep me out. This is not what a child’s life should look like. She’s 6 years old for goodness sake”.

Many others, while admitting that yes, she is a beauty, are also conflicted about the images: “Are these airbrushed? If yes, does it matter? Wow, she’s like a doll! I hope she learns that looks aren’t everything — she should be running around playing, not even giving it a thought to what she looks like. Pathetic.”

As the comments illustrate, the world of child modelling and beauty is rife with contradictions. How young is too young? How adult should they be made to look? What is that fine line where cute turns into creepy?

Dr Fiona Martin from the Sydney Child Psychology Centre says that “very clear boundaries are needed” regarding the treatment of young people, who are “vulnerable to persuasion and cannot make decisions themselves”.

“Media and advertising bodies which self-regulate can write and regulate codes … in the best interest of the children … and ensure that they’re applied across the industry,” she says.

“Parents need to be made more aware of what they can do in terms of advertising that portrays children in negative or indecent ways.”

While Dr Martin does not condemn all child modelling, she stresses that the sexualisation of a child may impact on his or her self-esteem and body image, as well as disrupt their life.

“Some images are OK, and others are coming to the fine line where an image of a young child becomes sexualised,” she says.

“There’s a fair bit of research to support the claim that children as young as six experience body image dissatisfaction.”

But National Recruitment Officer for Bettina Management — a child modelling and talent agency — Johanna Millward, says it’s all about perception.

When shown the image of Kristina, she says: “It’s just a kid on a bed. You can say she has a sultry look on her face, or you can say it’s grumpy or grouchy — it’s all determined by the person looking and the experiences they’ve had in life,” she tells News Corp Australia.

Ms Millward, who matches child models and actors with clients, says it is important to consider “what the image is for”.

“Is it for advertising? What are they advertising? Is it a family portrait? It all depends.”

She disagrees with children wearing makeup or jewellery — “you’re making a child look older when they don’t have to be” — but says that some children, such as Kristina, may be photographed with makeup and fake tan for a professional modelling shoot to add to her portfolio — “to make her look good”.

Parents often find themselves trying to determine if their little tomboy will end up loving the ladies, or if their Little Lord Fauntleroy will like boy-on-boy. They probably will, say scientists. What are some other signs your offspring is queer?

According to this rundown by (gay) psychologist Jesse Bering, recent studies indicate that “gender-variant behavior” (i.e. girls who play with trucks and boys who play with dolls) is a good predictor of whether or not a child will turn out to be a practicing homosexual. Bering, who works at Queen’s University (seriously) in Belfast, says that not all children who take up the stereotypical behavior of members of the opposite sex will end up wanting to go to bed with members of the same sex, but it is a good indicator.

All this talk of “pre-homosexuals” and “sexed-type behavior” is way too scientific and complicated, so we’re going to break it down for you. If your young one exhibits any of the following behaviors, he or she is going to grow up to wave the rainbow flag. But don’t worry! You can look forward to having someone to go shopping with you, or help you fix your leaky roof.

• When your son is done taking a bath, he drapes a yellow towel over his head, runs his hands through his beautiful blond hair, and informs you he’ll only answer to the name “Charisse.”
• Your daughter spends more time in ballet class trying to make sure the bar is properly affixed to the wall than learning first position.
• At your son’s first tee ball practice, he asked all his teammates if they are pitchers or catchers.
• The first thing on your daughter’s Christmas list is flannel shirts. The second is a bond for college tuition. (Smith is expensive!)
• No matter what your gay party planner friends tell you, a boy asking for Broadway legend Betty Buckley to perform at his ninth birthday party is not common at all.
• Your daughter insists on sleeping on top of her Dora the Explorer bed spread, not under it.
• When your daughter plays “House,” she pretends to be an annoying doctor with a pill-addiction and a limp.
• Even though it’s football, if your son has an obsession with either Tom Brady or Mark Sanchez, then he’s totally a ‘mo. Same goes for your daughter.
• Your son tells you he wants to dress up for Halloween like his idol, Entertainment Tonight‘s Mary Hart.
• If you buy your daughter the overalls she’s been asking for, you might as well just buy her the Meshell Ndegeocello CD to match.
• Finding your son wearing his mother’s high heels doesn’t mean he’s gay. Finding your son wearing his mother’s “fiercest” high heels does.
• Months ago, your daughter caught 5 minutes of Mad Men while you were watching it and she still asks about her “friend” Sally Draper.
• Your kid requests a Justin Bieber haircut. This is true for children of both sexes.
• Lacrosse is totally gay. Just sayin’.
• If you ever voted for a homophobic Republican political candidate, your child is gay. Karma is a bitch like that.
