- In 1978, Gautam Adani began his career when he moved to Mumbai to work as a diamond grader for Mahendra Brothers. Then, after accumulating some experience, he set up his own diamond brokerage at Zaveri Bazaar in Mumbai.
- In 1981, Gautam’s brother Mahasukhbhai Adani bought a plastic manufacturing facility in Ahmedabad and invited him to join and manage the operation. This plastic unit business turned out to be Adani’s gateway to global trading through imports of polyvinyl chloride (PVC).
- In 1985, Gautam began importing primary polymers for small-scale industries.
