Farooq Qaiser was born on October 31, 1945. His birthplace was Sialkot, Punjab, British India but after partition, his parents moved to Islamabad, Pakistan.
Safdar Hussain, popularly known as Farooq Qaiser, had a diverse and accomplished career.
He spent his early childhood in Peshawar and Kohat, Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa, and later pursued education in various fields.
Here are some highlights of his life and career:
Education: In 1970, he graduated with a Bachelor of Arts degree in Fine Arts from the National College of Arts (NCA) in Lahore, Pakistan.
He continued his education and earned a master’s degree in Graphic Arts from Bucharest, Romania, in 1976.
During his time in Romania, he also received training in puppetry. Later, in 1999, he obtained a master’s degree in Mass Communication from the University of Southern California, School for Communication and Journalism in the United States.
Career Beginnings: Farooq Qaiser started his career in the early 1970s, initially creating a short documentary in the English language after graduating from the National College of Arts.
His involvement in children’s television began when his teacher, Salima Hashmi, got him involved in her puppet show called “Akkar Bakkar.”
He worked on the scripts and puppets for the show, which was intended to be Pakistan’s version of the American educational show “Sesame Street.”
Kaliyan and Uncle Sargam: In 1976, Farooq Qaiser directed and wrote his puppet show called “Kaliyan,” which was broadcast on Pakistan Television (PTV).
In this show, he introduced the iconic fictional puppet character, “Uncle Sargam,” which went on to become a beloved household name in Pakistan.
He also created other puppet characters for the show, including Haiga and Maasi Museebte.

Farooq Qaiser voiced Uncle Sargam, and the character was known for reflecting the insecurities and fears of the average middle-class Pakistani.
Other Contributions: Farooq Qaiser’s contributions extended beyond puppetry. He worked as a cartoonist and newspaper columnist for the Urdu daily newspaper “Daily Nai Baat” in Lahore, often using the pen name “Meethay Karelay.” He taught at the Fatima Jinnah Women’s University in Rawalpindi.
Recognitions and Service: Farooq Qaiser received the Presidential Pride of Performance award in 1993 for his outstanding contributions.
He also served on the board of governors at the National Institute of Folk and Traditional Heritage (Lok Virsa) in Islamabad, Pakistan, in 2015.
In addition to his work in Pakistan, he served in India as a member of UNESCO, providing educational services for two years.
