The fifth entry in the Predator movie series is titled “Prey.” The film acts as both a prologue to the previous four movies and is set in September 1919 on the Northern Great Plains. Furthermore, the entire franchise is meant to be rebooted with this film. The Raphael Adolini 1715 handgun that the French fur trapper known as Waxed Mustache gifts to the movie’s protagonist, Naru, is one of the easter eggs that connect the Hulu movie with the ones that came before it. How Important Is the Raphael Adolini 1715 Pistol?
In the movie “Prey,” a young Comanche woman warrior named Naru sets out on a long trek to track down a formidable Predator or Yautja prey. She discovers traps set throughout the movie in various locations, and she eventually runs across the culprits—a gang of French fur trappers. They capture her, and after speaking to her in her own language, Waxed Mustache instructs her to assist them in killing the thing. She decides to get revenge on them, though, after seeing how the other fur trappers treated her brother. Waxed Mustache lends her his flintlock pistol in exchange for her assistance in treating his wounds when she later visits the fur trappers’ camp to rescue her puppy. Before being defeated by Naru herself, the Predator murders the fur trappers, including Waxed Mustache and Naru’s brother. The main character then returns home and hands the Predator’s head and pistol to the leader of her clan. At this point, we see the writing, “Raphael Adolini 1715,” on it.
The Predator movie series contains at least two instances of this pistol. It is a flintlock gun produced in Spain that once belonged to pirate leader Raphael Adolini. The inscription indicates that it was created in 1715. In the comic book “Predator: 1718,” which debuted in the first issue of the special anniversary anthology series “A Decade of Dark Horse” published by Dark Horse Comics in July 1996. The plot follows Adolini as he battles crew mutiny and discovers an unlikely friend in the Predator that eventually takes the name Greyback. Together, Adolini and Greyback battle the mutinous pirates. Adolini eventually suffers a fatal injury. He hands Greyback the pistol before he passes away.
In “Predator 2,” Greyback and the gun reappear together. It was published in 1990, but it takes place in 1997. Greyback and other members of its kind appear after Mike Harrigan (Danny Glover) kills the Predator known as City Hunter, and they present Harrigan with the gun out of respect.
There are some plot holes introduced by the pistol’s introduction in “Prey.” In 1718, Adolini gave Greyback the handgun. It makes little sense for Waxed Mustache to obtain the pistol from Greyback during the interim period given that the events of “Prey” occur just a year later. The Predators are a strong species. It’s extremely doubtful that Waxed Mustache, as he’s portrayed in the movie, could do anything to gain the respect of the Predator race.
Furthermore, because the gun is already in human hands in 1997, can we infer that Harrigan didn’t obtain it from Greyback? Future developments in the series could see Greyback get his gun back, maintaining the canon. The lines of the war between humans and Predators might be redrawn as part of the reboot process, which is also a possibility in this case. It’s possible that the man introduced to us as Waxed Mustache is Adolini or a reimagined version of him.
