Elias Ahuja was born on 8 January 1863 in Cadiz, southwestern Spain, he was 88 years old at the time of his death. Elias founded many sports, religious, military, and educational institutions because he was very interested in culture.
Elias studied commerce at the Technical Institute of Boston. In 1903 he proceeded to the Republic of Chile and set off as Vice-president and later Director of the “Dupont Nitrate Company”.
Ahuja built hospitals, dining halls, clinics, quarters, schools, and city council buildings, nourish the poor, orphans, and assisted widows, and worked to improve conditions in sanitoriums and jails.
Elias was unofficial president of the Red Cross in Cadiz and Seville and accepted state decorations for his philanthropy such as the Red Cross Gold Medal, the Military service cross, the Scouts Gold Medal, and the Cross of the Civilian Order among others.
However, later Ahuja was accused of misusing funds and was forced to run away from Spain via Gibraltar in 1937.
