Does the episode 8 ending set up season 3?
Just like those risen from the grave themselves, there’s simply no keeping the zombie sub-genre down.
From George A. Romero to Zack Snyder, filmmakers have long explored the undead on screen and there has been a great deal of genre hybridity along the way, with some infusing the likes of comedy, drama, and beyond seamlessly into their work.
There was a significant boom with the release of The Walking Dead and a number of zombie shows followed, and indeed, continue to surface.
One of the more recent to demand attention is Black Summer.
Created by Karl Schaefer and John Hyams, season 1 arrived on Netflix in 2019, and season 2 followed on Thursday, June 17th 2021.
Audiences have made quick work of it, compelling them to contemplate the future. So, does the ending of episode 8 set up Black Summer season 3?
Black Summer: Is season 3 warranted?
WARNING: BLACK SUMMER SEASON 2 FINALE SPOILERS
Yes, there is arguably lots of potential to progress the story forward following the events of the final episode of season 2.
We departed on a scene with Sun, as she was the only one who managed to make it to the plane. Once on board she discovers that the pilot speaks some Korean.
It’s uncertain where they’re headed but the pilot establishes that it won’t be long before they’ll have to refuel. This raises a number of questions, as audiences will be eager to know how things turn out once they do return to land.
Given the ending, it’s likely that a third batch of episodes would focus its lens on Sun’s journey, allowing her to take centre-stage moving forward.
With Rose and Anna, on the other hand, they obviously didn’t make it onto the plane and it hasn’t been clarified whether they’re even still alive. Anna returned to get her mum who was wounded but subsequently hijacked a car.
Whether Rose is a passenger and escapes with her remains to be seen. She is severely injured, so only time will tell and it’s wise to predict that a potential third season would explore how the survivors attempt to find each other once again.

The fans want another round
It hasn’t taken long for some to flock through all 8 episodes and a number of viewers have voiced their hopes for another season on Twitter.

Is the series renewed at Netflix?
Taking all of these loose ends and ambiguities into consideration, there’s arguably every reason from a narrative standpoint to continue making Black Summer.
However, Netflix is yet to confirm whether they have renewed it.
Season 2 renewal wasn’t announced until November 2019. If a pattern emerges then perhaps we won’t hear of the series’ fate until late 2021.
