A highly popular illustrator and artist is Mackesy. When he first started out, he worked as a cartoonist for The Spectator. Later on, he became an illustrator for Oxford University Press. Mackesy even collaborated with Richard Curtis on the set of the holiday movie Love Actually, producing a number of drawings that were auctioned off to benefit Comic Relief.

Charlie was selected to work on the Unity Series project, which aimed to honor Nelson Mandela. Nelson Mandela and various international artists worked together on this project. Mackesy and the other artists were presented with six prints from the “Struggle Series,” which they used to express what Nelson Mandela meant to them.

Mackesy’s paintings have been exhibited all over the world. His first sketches were displayed at The Park Walk Gallery. Since then, his drawings have been discovered in London and New York. Charlie has lived and painted in South Africa, Southern Africa, and the United States.

Mackesy spent a significant amount of time researching gospel hands and jazz clubs because he was fascinated by the vibrant city of New Orleans. This musical compulsion continued even after he returned to London.

His best-known work is the award-winning children’s book titled The Boy, the Mole, the Fox, and the Horse. The book chronicles the boy’s journeys through the countryside, where he encounters some unusual companions. The four characters form a strong friendship as they get to know each other. This is not your typical picture book, as the story is not told in chronological order. Instead, it features a series of beautiful drawings and peaceful conversations.

This children’s book came into existence thanks to a straightforward illustration of a boy and a mole posted by Charlie Mackesy on Instagram. According to Mackesy’s comment, the drawing was inspired by his bravest action to date. Many individuals and organizations felt a connection to this image when it was shared.

The process that brought the book to life began when an editor discovered the illustration. It has since gained immense popularity, topping charts in both the US and the UK. It holds the record for being the longest-lasting Sunday Times Hardback Number One, spending over 1000 weeks on The Sunday Times Bestsellers List. Additionally, it was chosen as the 2019 Barnes & Noble Book of the Year and the Waterstones Book of the Year.
